The most dependable ways to improve fuel economy in a GMC Sierra 1500 with the 6.2L V8 are to drive smoothly, avoid extended idling, keep the tires at the pressure on the truck’s tire-and-loading label, use the fuel grade specified for your model year, and follow the scheduled maintenance plan. These steps can reduce avoidable fuel use, but there is no verified MPG increase that applies to every Sierra 6.2L.

Your result depends on body style, bed length, four-wheel-drive system, transmission, tires, payload, trailer, route, weather, traffic, and driving style. The fuel guidance below is specifically identified as 2020 guidance where noted; check your own owner’s manual and fuel-door information before applying a model-year-specific instruction.

Set realistic expectations for a Sierra 6.2L

A 6.2L V8 Sierra can be efficient for its size when it is operated and maintained as GMC specifies, but it is still a full-size truck. Fuel consumption changes substantially with aerodynamic drag, payload, tire design, temperature, road grade, stop-and-go traffic, and trailer weight. A highway trip with an empty bed cannot be compared fairly with a short urban trip carrying tools or towing.

GMC’s 2025 product information lists the 6.2L V8 at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque in the Sierra 1500 applications that offer it. Those output figures describe engine capability; they are not an EPA fuel-economy rating and do not establish the MPG of an unspecified Sierra configuration. No current MPG figure or guaranteed improvement is established for every Sierra 1500 6.2L.

Measure your own baseline

Before changing several things at once, create a simple record so you can tell whether a change helped. At a normal fuel stop, fill the tank, note the odometer or trip reading, and record the gallons added. At the next comparable fill-up, divide miles driven by gallons added. Keep highway, city, trailer, weather, and payload notes with the result. Comparing similar routes and loads is more useful than comparing a winter commute with a lightly loaded summer highway trip.

Use the same calculation method after changing one variable, such as correcting tire pressure or reducing idle time. Treat the result as your truck’s observation, not a promise that another owner will see the same number.

Choose the fuel grade required for your model year

For the 2020 Sierra 1500 with the 6.2L V8, GMC’s owner manual highly recommends premium unleaded rated at 93 AKI for best performance and fuel economy. The same manual says fuel as low as 87 AKI may be used, but warns that acceleration and fuel economy will be reduced. AKI is the Anti-Knock Index number shown on the pump in the United States and Canada.

That wording is year-specific. Do not assume every Sierra 6.2L from every model year has identical fuel instructions. Read the fuel section of your manual and the label inside the fuel door for your year, engine calibration, and market.

Fuel choice What the 2020 6.2L manual says Practical implication
Premium unleaded, 93 AKI Highly recommended for best performance and fuel economy. This is the manufacturer’s preferred grade for the 2020 6.2L. It is not a guarantee that the higher pump price will be recovered through fuel savings.
Unleaded, 87 AKI Permitted, with reduced acceleration and fuel economy. Usable on the 2020 engine according to that manual, but not the stated optimum for performance or economy.
E85 or FlexFuel Do not use in the 6.2L V8. Choose only a fuel type approved for your truck; do not treat an E85 pump as an alternative octane choice.

Does premium gas automatically save money?

No. GMC’s 2020 guidance connects 93 AKI with best performance and fuel economy, but it does not promise a dollar saving after the higher price of premium is considered. Whether the extra cost makes sense depends on local prices, your driving, and your model year’s instructions. Use the grade GMC specifies rather than choosing premium as an aftermarket MPG treatment.

Change the way you accelerate, brake, and idle

GMC’s 2020 owner manual has a “Driving for Better Fuel Economy” section. Its central instruction is: “Avoid fast starts and accelerate smoothly.” The following habits translate that guidance into repeatable actions.

Start smoothly

Apply the accelerator progressively instead of making a hard launch from a stop. A smooth start lets the drivetrain build speed without an unnecessary burst of engine load. This matters most in traffic, where repeated aggressive launches can occur dozens of times in one trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anticipate traffic and brake gradually

Look farther ahead for red lights, stopped traffic, merging vehicles, and turn lanes. Lifting off the accelerator early and allowing the truck to slow progressively reduces the need for abrupt braking followed by another hard acceleration. Continue to brake normally when safety requires it; economy never takes priority over stopping distance or control.

Limit extended idling

Turn the engine off during avoidable, extended waits when doing so is safe and consistent with your truck’s operating instructions. Warming the truck for long periods while parked consumes fuel without moving the vehicle. In cold or severe conditions, follow GMC’s instructions for starting, visibility, defrosting, and engine protection rather than applying a blanket no-idle rule.

Respect posted speed limits

GMC lists observing speed limits among its fuel-economy recommendations. Higher road speed generally increases the work required to overcome air resistance, but the useful action is simply to drive at a legal, safe speed appropriate for traffic and weather. Do not attempt to save fuel by driving below a safe flow of traffic.

Use cruise control only when conditions permit

The 2020 manual recommends cruise control when road and weather conditions allow it. It can help maintain a steady speed on an open, relatively level road. Do not use it on slippery surfaces, in heavy traffic, on winding roads, or anywhere that constant driver control is needed. Cancel it early when approaching congestion, a steep grade, or a changing road condition.

Combine errands

GMC also recommends combining trips. Plan errands into fewer outings when practical, rather than making several separate cold starts and short drives. Grouping stops can reduce repeated travel and unnecessary idling, although the actual effect depends on distance, traffic, and how the combined route is planned.

Keep tire pressure at the truck’s specified value

Use the pressure printed on the Sierra’s tire-and-loading information label, normally located on the driver-side door or door pillar. That value is the vehicle manufacturer’s reference for the installed tire size and loading conditions. Check pressure with a reliable gauge when the tires are cold, and recheck after substantial temperature changes or before a long trip.

GMC explains that underinflated tires create resistance, forcing the engine to work harder, consuming more fuel, and increasing tire temperature. Underinflation can also affect handling and tire wear. A digital tire pressure gauge is a practical way to check all four tires and the spare where applicable; use it to match the label, not to chase an invented MPG target.

Do not overinflate to seek economy

Adding air above the pressure specified on the vehicle label is not a manufacturer-approved shortcut. Excess pressure can change the tire’s contact patch, ride, handling, and wear pattern. Set pressure to the label value and account for any special loading instructions in your manual.

Check all tires, including after repairs

Inspect pressure routinely, after a puncture repair, and before towing. A slow leak can leave one tire underinflated even when the other three appear normal. If pressure repeatedly falls, have the tire, valve, and wheel checked instead of compensating with frequent refills.

Use the correct replacement specification

For 2020 Sierra models, the owner manual says replacement tires should retain the same TPC Spec number molded on the tire sidewall near the size. The TPC Spec identifies a tire specification tested for the vehicle. Do not assume that a different tire, a more aggressive tread, a larger wheel, or an aftermarket part will improve fuel economy; changes can alter rolling resistance, weight, gearing, clearance, and handling.

Follow the scheduled maintenance plan

GMC’s fuel-economy advice includes following the scheduled maintenance for the particular vehicle. Use the maintenance schedule in your model-year manual or the vehicle’s maintenance system rather than a generic interval copied from another Sierra.

  • Review the maintenance reminder and complete the listed service at the required interval.
  • Tell the service provider the exact model year, engine, drivetrain, mileage, and severe-use conditions.
  • Keep records of completed work, warning messages, and any change in fuel consumption.
  • Investigate a sudden economy change instead of masking it with a fuel additive or tuning product that GMC has not specified.

Maintenance is not a promise of a particular MPG result. Its purpose is to keep the truck operating within the condition assumed by the manufacturer’s instructions and to identify problems that may increase fuel use or compromise safety.

Account for payload and towing separately

Towing changes the fuel-economy question because the truck must move both itself and the trailer, while aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance increase. GMC states that trailering capacity varies by body style, bed length, drivetrain, and installed equipment. The limit for one Sierra 6.2L cannot be applied to another simply because both have the same engine.

Verify the exact ratings

Use the trailering information for your specific truck and account for passengers, cargo, hitch equipment, and trailer tongue weight. Check the vehicle and trailer labels and the owner’s manual before selecting a trailer. Do not rely on a general engine-based towing number.

Load within the limits

Remove unnecessary cargo when you are not using it. When towing, distribute cargo according to the trailer manufacturer’s instructions and remain within the truck’s payload, axle, hitch, and combined-weight limits. An overloaded or improperly balanced combination is a safety problem first and a fuel-economy problem second.

Prepare tires and driving controls

Set the truck and trailer tires to their specified pressures for the load, inspect them before departure, and use cruise control only if the road, traffic, grade, and weather make it appropriate. GMC’s trailering guidance supports correct inflation and safe loading; it does not establish a specific towing technique or MPG improvement.

A practical routine for reducing avoidable fuel use

Use this routine to turn the manufacturer’s advice into a repeatable check without changing the truck’s design.

  1. Before leaving: Check the door-label tire pressures, look for visible tire damage, remove unnecessary bed cargo, and confirm that a trailer or roof load is within the truck’s documented limits.
  2. At the pump: Select the fuel grade required by your model-year manual. For a 2020 6.2L, 93 AKI is GMC’s highly recommended grade; never use E85/FlexFuel in that engine.
  3. On the first miles: Accelerate smoothly, avoid a fast launch, and allow the truck to reach traffic speed without repeated throttle surges.
  4. During the trip: Anticipate stops, brake progressively, obey speed limits, and use cruise control only in suitable conditions.
  5. At planned stops: Avoid unnecessary extended idling and combine errands where doing so does not create extra travel.
  6. After refueling: Record miles, gallons, route type, payload, weather, and trailer use so you can compare like with like.
  7. At the maintenance interval: Follow the schedule for your exact truck and address warning messages or a persistent change in fuel consumption.

Diagnose a sudden drop in fuel economy

A gradual difference between two trips may be normal when the route, weather, traffic, or load changes. A persistent or sudden change deserves a structured check.

  1. Confirm the measurement: Recalculate from fuel added and miles driven, and compare with a similar route rather than a single short trip.
  2. Check tire pressure: Match every tire to the vehicle label and look for a slow leak or recent puncture repair.
  3. Review the load: Note passengers, tools, bed cargo, trailer weight, roof accessories, and any recent equipment change.
  4. Review fuel and use: Confirm that the fuel grade and fuel type match your manual, and identify extra idling, stop-and-go traffic, or unusually high speeds.
  5. Check maintenance status: Follow the scheduled service and have persistent changes, warning lights, rough operation, or visible leaks evaluated by a qualified technician.

Do not infer that a single tank proves a mechanical fault, and do not promise that an additive, performance tune, or replacement part will restore a particular MPG number without vehicle-specific evidence.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying 2020 fuel wording to every year: The 93-AKI recommendation, 87-AKI caveat, and E85 prohibition cited here come from the 2020 manual. Verify your own year.
  • Using an EPA rating from another configuration: Cab, bed, drivetrain, equipment, tires, and model year can differ. An output figure or rating for one truck is not a result for all Sierra 6.2L models.
  • Overinflating tires: More pressure than the label specifies is not an established fuel-saving method.
  • Expecting premium to guarantee lower costs: Premium is recommended for the 2020 engine’s best performance and fuel economy, but the manual does not guarantee that it will offset its higher price.
  • Ignoring towing limits: The 6.2L badge alone does not establish trailer capacity. Verify the complete truck and trailer combination.
  • Idling for convenience: Long parked warm-ups and waiting periods consume fuel; follow safety and defrosting requirements, then shut down when conditions permit.

What the manufacturer guidance can—and cannot—tell you

GMC’s recommendations identify controllable practices: smooth acceleration, gradual braking, less unnecessary idling, suitable cruise-control use, legal speeds, correct tire inflation, combined trips, correct tire specifications, and scheduled maintenance. They do not assign a universal MPG gain to any one action.

For a Sierra 1500 6.2L with an unspecified year and configuration, the most defensible goal is to eliminate avoidable fuel use while preserving safety and the truck’s approved operating limits. Use your own comparable fuel records to judge whether a change helps, and use the current owner’s manual and door-label instructions as the final authority.
