Most long-ride discomfort on a Harley-Davidson Street Bob or Yamaha FZ-FI V3 can be reduced without immediately replacing the seat or changing the handlebars. First match the motorcycle to your actual rider, passenger and luggage load: set rear-shock preload, rotate the controls so your wrists stay neutral, and check your reach while seated naturally. Only then try a reversible seat pad or order model-specific parts.
The two motorcycles create different fit challenges. The Street Bob has a low 25.8-inch laden seat, mini-ape handlebars, mid-mounted controls and an adjustable rear shock. The Yamaha FZ-FI V3 has a 790 mm seat, telescopic fork and seven-step adjustable Monocross rear suspension. Your height, inseam, hip and knee angle, riding posture, road surface and load determine whether either bike feels comfortable for hours.

What is making the ride uncomfortable?
Identify the sensation before changing hardware. “Uncomfortable” can mean concentrated pressure under the sit bones, numbness, wrists that ache from supporting your upper body, shoulders held too high, lower-back fatigue, harsh impacts, heat buildup or a passenger sliding into you under braking. Each symptom points toward a different adjustment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSeat pressure or numbness
Pressure usually comes from the seat shape, foam density, riding position or a combination of those factors. A low seat does not automatically distribute weight well; its contour may still load one small area. Numbness that appears quickly is a reason to stop and change position rather than simply ride through it.

Wrist and shoulder strain
Wrist pain often means the bars or levers are rotated so your hands bend upward or outward. Shoulder fatigue can result when the bars are too far away, too low or too wide for your torso. On the Street Bob, the mini-ape arrangement makes reach especially personal. On the FZ-FI V3, an upright design can still feel stretched if your torso and arm length differ from the intended fit.
Lower-back, hip or knee fatigue
Back and hip symptoms are affected by the distance between the seat, handlebar and foot controls. The Street Bob’s mid-mounted controls create a different hip and knee angle from the more forward-feeling posture many riders expect from a cruiser. The FZ-FI V3’s conventional foot position may suit some riders but leave others wanting a different bend. Do not change several contact points at once; otherwise you will not know which change helped.
Harshness over bumps
A shock setting that is too soft can allow excess movement and bottoming, while a setting that is too firm can transmit sharp impacts. Passenger and luggage weight alter the required setting. A correct preload setting cannot compensate for a damaged component, incorrect tire pressure or a worn seat, so inspect those basics if adjustment produces no improvement.

A rider and passenger create a different load and seating relationship from a solo ride. A passenger may need a separate seat surface, a stable grab point and enough room not to press the rider forward. Treat tandem comfort as its own setup rather than assuming a solo adjustment will work for both people.
Geometry and equipment that shape comfort
| Factor | Harley-Davidson Street Bob | Yamaha FZ-FI V3 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat height | 25.8 inches laden (2026 specification) | 790 mm (current Yamaha Motor India listing) | Seat height affects leg reach, hip angle and how easily you can move your feet at stops. Laden height includes the motorcycle under its stated loaded condition. |
| Suspension adjustment | Rear monoshock with under-seat cam-style preload adjustment; dual-bending-valve fork | Telescopic fork and seven-step adjustable Monocross rear suspension | Preload changes the spring’s operating position for rider, passenger and luggage load; it is not a universal stiffness dial. |
| Handlebar and controls | Mini-ape handlebar with mid-mounted controls | Body design intended to support a relaxed riding position | Bar reach, rise and foot position determine wrist angle, shoulder load and hip/knee bend. |
| Published size and mass context | 646 lb running order; 3.5-gallon fuel capacity (2026 specification) | 149 cc engine (current listing) | Mass, fuel and intended use affect how the motorcycle responds when loaded and how much effort low-speed maneuvers require. |
| Passenger provisions | Solo-oriented bobber layout; passenger equipment depends on exact trim and installed parts | Double/two-level seat and grab bar are described by Yamaha as supporting tandem comfort | Confirm that a passenger seat, pegs and grab point are actually fitted to your year and trim. |
These published dimensions are starting points, not a promise that one motorcycle will fit every rider. A 25.8-inch seat may be easy to reach while the mini-ape bars still create shoulder tension. A 790 mm seat may feel manageable while its stock seat concentrates pressure after an hour.

A measured setup sequence before buying parts
1. Record the rider, route and load
- Write down where discomfort starts and how it feels: pressure, numbness, wrist pain, shoulder tension, back fatigue, bump harshness, heat or passenger movement.
- Measure or note your height and inseam, and record whether you ride in thin or heavily padded clothing. Clothing changes reach and seat pressure enough to confuse a comparison.
- List the normal load: fuel, luggage, top box or saddlebags, and passenger weight. Use the same load for every test ride.
- Choose a repeatable route containing the surfaces that expose the problem. A short loop can reveal reach and lever angle; a longer ride is needed to assess pressure and heat.
- Change one variable at a time and record the result. If you rotate the bars, add a pad and alter preload in one session, you cannot identify the useful change.
2. Set rear suspension for the actual load
Begin with the rear suspension because load changes the motorcycle’s attitude and your relationship to the bars and seat.
Street Bob preload
The Street Bob uses an under-seat, cam-style rear-shock preload adjustment. Set it for the combination you are carrying: rider alone, rider plus luggage, or rider and passenger. Make the adjustment according to the motorcycle’s owner information and keep both sides of the setup, where applicable, consistent. The objective is to keep the rear suspension operating in its intended range rather than forcing a soft solo setting to carry a tandem load.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →After each change, ride the same test loop. If the rear feels wallowy, bottoms on ordinary bumps or changes the steering attitude when loaded, increase support incrementally. If sharp edges are transmitted directly to your seat and hands, test a less aggressive setting. Preload does not replace inspection of a leaking shock, damaged mount or incorrectly inflated tire.
FZ-FI V3 Monocross adjustment
The FZ-FI V3 has seven rear-shock positions. Start from the current position, note it, and move only one position at a time. Test solo, then repeat with your normal luggage or passenger load rather than guessing that the highest or lowest position is best.
A setting that feels comfortable solo may allow excessive rear movement with a passenger. Conversely, the stiffest position can make a light solo rider feel every sharp bump. Keep a simple log of position, load, route and symptoms so you can return to the best result.

3. Neutralize bar and lever angles
- Sit in your normal riding position with your shoulders relaxed and your elbows slightly bent. Do not reach forward deliberately to touch the grips.
- Look at your wrists. Rotate the handlebar and levers so your hands continue the line of your forearms rather than bending sharply upward or downward.
- Check that you can cover the controls without lifting your shoulders or sliding forward on the seat.
- Turn the handlebar fully left and right with the engine off. Confirm that cables, hoses and wiring do not become tight, snag, or alter the steering.
- Verify full steering lock and unobstructed access to every switch and lever before riding.
On the Street Bob, the mini-ape bar can feel relaxed for one rider and excessive for another. A small rotation may solve a wrist angle without changing parts. On the FZ-FI V3, preserve the relaxed posture intended by its body design rather than pulling the bar toward you until cables or controls are compromised.
4. Recheck your contact points
With the bars neutral, notice whether you are supporting your torso through your palms. If so, move your pelvis into a stable position and relax your grip. A seat that slopes you toward the tank can create constant wrist loading even when the bar angle is correct.
Check hip and knee bend at the same time. If your knees feel cramped, a seat that changes height or a model-specific foot-control solution may help; if your legs feel stretched, a different seat contour may be safer than moving the controls. Any change must preserve the ability to operate the brake and gear controls naturally.
Use a reversible seat solution first
If the main symptom is pressure, heat or vibration through the seat, try a correctly fitted gel or 3-D mesh motorcycle gel seat pad before replacing the seat. Harley-Davidson’s HOG fit guidance describes breathable 3-D mesh construction that promotes airflow, reduces heat and perspiration, and adds shock-absorbing behavior. A removable pad lets you evaluate those effects without committing to a permanent change.
How to test a pad
- Choose a pad that covers the areas actually supporting you and is secured so it cannot slide during braking.
- Install it with the same suspension and control settings you recorded earlier.
- Ride the repeatable route long enough for the original pressure to appear.
- Check whether the pad relieves pressure without making you slide forward, raising you so far that your knees or wrists change, or interfering with passenger seating.
- Remove it for a control ride. If the difference is small, the problem may be seat shape, reach or suspension rather than cushioning alone.
Extra thickness changes your effective seat height. Recheck foot reach at stops and the distance to the bars. A pad that solves numbness but makes your arms too straight is not a complete solution; revisit the control position instead of stacking more padding.

Choose permanent parts by the symptom
| Persistent symptom after setup | Part category to investigate | Checks before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Localized seat pressure or a contour that forces you forward | Model- and year-specific replacement seat | Confirm exact Street Bob or FZ-FI V3 year, trim, mounting points, seat height and passenger provision. A different foam shape can alter reach. |
| Wrists too bent or shoulders reaching forward | Handlebar or riser change | Check cable, hose and wiring slack through the complete steering range; verify full lock and switch access. |
| Hip or knee angle remains tiring | Foot-control or peg solution | Confirm brake and gear linkage travel, ground clearance, passenger interference and the ability to stand or move your feet safely. |
| Harshness or excessive movement after correct load setting | Suspension inspection or model-specific component | Rule out tire-pressure errors, damage and wear before replacing parts. Match any component to the exact model year and load use. |
Permanent changes should be made one category at a time. Keep the original parts so you can reverse the change if the new reach, seat height or control angle creates a different problem.

FZ-FI V3 tandem use
Yamaha describes the FZ-FI as developed under the “Urban Fighter” concept and says its body design supports “a more relaxed riding position.” Its double or two-level seat and grab bar are intended to help tandem comfort. Those features provide a useful starting point, but a passenger still needs adequate foot support and a seat surface that does not pitch forward.
Set the rear shock for the combined load, then ask the passenger where pressure, vibration or sliding occurs. A passenger who braces against the rider can make the rider’s shoulders and wrists tense, so address the grab point and seating position rather than only adding softer foam.
Street Bob tandem use
The Street Bob’s bobber-style layout is commonly oriented around solo riding, and passenger equipment depends on the exact trim and installed accessories. Do not assume that a passenger pad, pegs or grab point shown on another year will fit yours. Verify the model-specific seat and foot-control solution, then check that the added load is within the motorcycle’s published limits.

Which motorcycle is easier to make comfortable?
There is no universal winner because the main variables are rider proportions and use case.
- Choose the Street Bob’s starting geometry when: a low laden seat helps your leg reach, you like a cruiser-style posture, and you are prepared to fine-tune mini-ape bar reach, mid-control hip angle and seat contour.
- Value the FZ-FI V3’s adjustability when: you want a 790 mm seat, a lighter-displacement motorcycle and seven rear-shock positions to tune around changing solo or luggage loads.
- Prioritize passenger use: the FZ-FI V3 has a published double/two-level seat and grab bar concept, while Street Bob passenger suitability must be confirmed for the exact trim and installed equipment.
- Prioritize reversibility: both bikes can be evaluated through preload, control-angle and removable-pad changes before you commit to a seat, bar, riser or foot-control replacement.
Use your own reach and load as the deciding evidence. A specification table can identify likely pressure points, but only a controlled setup sequence reveals whether the issue is the seat, suspension or controls.
Troubleshooting after the first adjustments
The seat pad helps for 20 minutes, then pressure returns
Check whether the pad has shifted, compressed or changed your pelvis angle. If it remains correctly positioned, the seat contour or riding position may be concentrating load. Try a different pad shape or a model-specific seat rather than adding layers that raise you farther from the controls.
Preload changes do not affect comfort
Confirm that you changed the rear setting intended for your motorcycle and that the load was identical between tests. Inspect tire pressure and look for signs of shock damage. If the motorcycle still bottoms, feels uncontrolled or transmits abnormal noise, stop experimenting with settings and arrange a qualified inspection.
Bars feel better but cables pull at full lock
Do not ride with tension in cables, hoses or wiring. Return to the previous safe position or use a model-specific bar or riser designed with the required control length. Full steering lock and free movement are non-negotiable checks after every change.
A passenger is comfortable but the rider is not
Rebalance the setup rather than sacrificing the rider’s control. Check whether the passenger’s position pushes you forward, then reassess seat shape, grab-point use and rear preload. A tandem configuration may require a different seat and control arrangement from your solo configuration.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you named the exact symptom and the time or distance at which it begins?
- Did you test with your normal clothing, luggage, fuel level and passenger load?
- Did you record the original Street Bob preload position or FZ-FI V3 shock position?
- Are your wrists close to straight and your shoulders relaxed while seated naturally?
- Does the handlebar retain full steering lock without cable, hose or wiring tension?
- Did you test a correctly fitted motorcycle gel seat pad before buying a replacement seat?
- Will the proposed seat, bar, riser or foot-control part fit the exact model year and trim?
- After installation, can you operate every control, reach the ground as expected and keep the passenger equipment secure?
Work through the checklist in order. Suspension and controls establish the motorcycle’s basic fit; a reversible pad then tests whether pressure and heat are the remaining problem. Permanent parts make sense only when the symptom is clear and the replacement addresses that specific contact point.
