Start with the original chassis and market—S13 Silvia/180SX, S14 Silvia/200SX, S15 Silvia or another SR20 application—then verify the complete package. Treat “redtop,” “blacktop” and “notchtop” as enthusiast shorthand, not Nissan model codes.
The SR20DET is a 1,998 cc turbocharged four-cylinder family used in multiple Nissan applications. S13, S14 and S15 versions differ in valve-cover design, variable cam timing, ignition hardware, wiring and related components, so a painted cover or a compression number cannot establish identity by itself.

What “genuine SR20DET” should mean
In a sale listing, “genuine” can describe several different things. The engine may be an original Nissan SR20DET block, a complete engine from a particular chassis, or a mixed build assembled from parts of several generations. Decide which claim you are evaluating before inspecting it.

- Engine family: the block and head must be consistent with the SR20DET turbocharged four-cylinder family.
- Donor generation: an S13, S14 or S15 claim should agree with the cover, cam-timing, ignition, intake, sensors, turbo, injectors, ECU and harness.
- Provenance: the stamped engine identification and donor VIN or import paperwork should support the seller’s story.
- Condition: compression, leak-down, oil-pressure, cooling and turbo checks describe mechanical health, not where the engine came from.
A motor can be mechanically strong yet misidentified, or correctly identified yet worn out. Keep identity and condition as separate purchase decisions.

Begin with the seller’s donor claim
Ask the seller to write down the claimed original chassis and market before you look at the parts. Record whether it is an S13 Silvia or 180SX, an S14 Silvia or 200SX, an S15 Silvia, or another SR20 application. Also record the claimed year, transmission, ECU, harness, turbo, injectors and whether the engine is complete.
This statement becomes your comparison baseline. If the seller cannot identify a donor, you can still inspect the engine, but you should treat it as an SR20DET assembly of uncertain specification rather than paying a premium for a particular generation.
Why the donor matters
S13, S14 and S15 hardware is not interchangeable as a set. A listing that calls an engine an S14 should not be judged by an S13 checklist, and an S15 claim requires its own wiring, ignition and sensor comparison. Market variations and swapped components are possible, so use the donor claim as a hypothesis to test rather than as proof.

“Redtop,” “blacktop” and “notchtop” are enthusiast nicknames based mainly on cover color or shape. They are not official Nissan engine designations. A rocker cover can be repainted, replaced, or installed on a different head, and the same nickname may be used for more than one application.
Use the cover as one clue in a package of checks. A color-only identification is especially weak when the engine is sold without its original intake, ignition parts, ECU or harness.
Use the rocker cover, VTC and ignition as a visual cross-check
The following combinations are useful starting points from specialist SR20 references. They do not replace stamping and paperwork, but a mismatch should stop you from accepting the advertised generation without further evidence.

| Claimed donor | Rocker-cover appearance | Cam-timing indication | Ignition arrangement |
|---|---|---|---|
| S13 Silvia/180SX turbo | Red, flat rocker cover | Non-VTC layout | Direct-fire ignition |
| S14 Silvia/200SX | Humped rocker cover | Variable cam timing (VTC) | External igniter |
| S15 Silvia | Humped rocker cover | Variable cam timing (VTC) | Smaller coils with internal igniters |
Look at the shape of the cover and the intake-side VTC hardware together. An S14 or S15 claim should be consistent with an intake-side VTC arrangement and a sloped or humped cover. An S13 claim should be consistent with the flatter, non-VTC arrangement. If the cover says one thing while the cam-timing or ignition hardware says another, possible explanations include a swapped head, a mixed build, or an incorrect listing.
Ignition details that expose mixed assemblies
Inspect the coils, igniter location and plugs rather than assuming that a cover identifies the electronics. S13 direct-fire hardware, S14 external-igniter hardware and S15 coils with internal igniters require different comparisons. Photograph the connectors and trace the harness back to the ECU so that a seller cannot establish the generation from a loose coil pack alone.
Corroborate intake, turbo, injectors, sensors and electronics
Once the cover and VTC arrangement appear plausible, inspect the parts that are commonly changed or omitted from swap packages:
- Intake manifold: compare its casting, runners, throttle-body arrangement and mounting details with the manual for the claimed chassis.
- Turbocharger: record the identification marks and compare the unit and its oil and coolant plumbing with the claimed generation.
- Injectors: photograph markings and confirm that the set is complete; do not assume that an engine with aftermarket injectors remains a factory-spec example.
- Crank-angle sensor and other sensors: compare connector shapes, locations and wiring to the correct manual.
- ECU and harness: verify that the ECU identification, plugs and harness routing belong with the claimed generation. A bare long block cannot prove which ECU originally operated it.
These components can be replaced during a swap, so a mismatch does not automatically mean the block is counterfeit. It does mean the seller should describe the engine as mixed or modified and price it accordingly unless documentation establishes the original specification.
Photograph the identification marks before paying
Request close, well-lit photographs before the engine is shipped or hidden in a crate. Ask for the complete part and an additional image showing its location on the engine so that a photo cannot be taken from an unrelated motor.

- Clean the cylinder-block area gently enough to reveal the engine-type and serial stamping without grinding or altering it.
- Photograph the stamping straight-on, then take an angled image showing surrounding casting features.
- Capture the cylinder-head casting, rocker cover, intake manifold, turbocharger, injectors, ignition components, ECU and harness plugs.
- Ask for a photo of any donor VIN plate, auction sheet, import document or dismantler record.
- Have the seller write the stamped characters in the invoice or sales agreement exactly as shown in the photographs.
Nissan’s own guidance confirms that engine-type numbers are stamped on the block, but the exact position is model-dependent. There is no single universal SR20DET stamping-location diagram that applies to every chassis and market. Use the factory manual for the claimed donor to locate and interpret the mark; do not reject an engine merely because its stamping is not where an internet image shows one.

Check the donor VIN and paperwork
Paperwork is strongest when it connects a specific engine to a specific vehicle. An auction sheet that only says “SR20” is weaker than a document showing the donor VIN, engine number and chassis details together.
S14 VIN evidence
The S14 service-manual identification section includes a vehicle serial-number field and decodes VIN engine-type character B as SR20DET. For an alleged S14 donor, ask for a VIN or auction document that is consistent with that coding, then compare the documented vehicle with the physical engine and its electronics.
Limits of paperwork
A VIN can establish what an engine was listed with, but it cannot prove that the same engine is in the crate unless the stamped number, photographs and chain of custody agree. Import and auction conventions also vary by market. If a document omits the engine number, state that limitation in the purchase agreement rather than treating the paper as complete provenance.

Use a model-specific factory service manual
Nissan TechInfo describes its factory-authorized manuals as containing detailed service and repair information and as the same manuals used by Nissan dealership professionals. Obtain the manual for the claimed chassis and market, not a generic SR20 guide.
Use it to verify:
- the engine-type and serial-stamping location;
- VIN and vehicle-identification fields;
- wiring diagrams, ECU plugs and sensor connectors;
- ignition and crank-angle-sensor arrangements;
- turbo, injector and intake references;
- service specifications needed for condition tests.
A manual is a tie-breaker when enthusiast nicknames or seller photos conflict. It cannot authenticate a missing number, but it gives you the correct reference for the chassis you are actually considering.
Test mechanical condition separately from identity
Only after the variant and provenance look credible should you spend time interpreting condition tests. A compression test evaluates how evenly the cylinders seal; it does not prove that the engine is an S13, S14 or S15, nor that its parts are original.

Compression test
- Confirm that the engine can be safely cranked and that the battery and starter are adequate for a repeatable test.
- Use a compression tester suitable for a four-cylinder engine.
- Test each cylinder under the same procedure and record every reading, along with the engine temperature and test conditions.
- Give the seller the complete sheet rather than accepting a verbal claim that compression is “good.”
The useful evidence is the pattern and the documented procedure. The supplied technical references do not establish one universal pass/fail number for every SR20DET configuration, so do not invent a threshold or compare readings taken under different conditions.
Leak-down, oil pressure and cooling checks
Where access allows, add a leak-down test, oil-pressure measurement and a cooling-system check. Record the equipment, test conditions and results. These checks help identify sealing, lubrication and cooling problems that a compression test may not reveal, but they remain condition evidence rather than provenance evidence.
Turbocharger and external inspection
Inspect the turbocharger for shaft play, contact marks, oil contamination and damaged plumbing. Look for smoke evidence, oil leaks, damaged connectors and signs of overheating. A clean exterior does not prove a healthy engine, and a dirty exterior does not establish that it is the wrong generation; use observations to negotiate testing or price, not to substitute for identification.
A practical pre-purchase workflow
Follow this sequence so that a promising test result does not distract you from a missing identity record.
- Write down the claim. Record donor chassis and market, year, transmission, ECU, harness, turbo, injectors and completeness.
- Reject color-only proof. Treat redtop, blacktop and notchtop as clues, then inspect cover shape, VTC and ignition.
- Compare the hardware package. Check intake, crank-angle sensor, connectors, turbo, injectors, ECU and harness against the correct manual.
- Secure identification photos. Obtain the block stamping, head casting and every major component before payment.
- Match documents. Compare the stamped number and donor VIN or import records; for S14 paperwork, check the engine-type character B coding.
- Run condition tests. Obtain compression and, when possible, leak-down, oil-pressure, cooling and turbo results under recorded conditions.
- Put the description in writing. List what is included, what is swapped, the test results, return terms and the exact stamped characters.
- Reassess mismatches. Pause the purchase if the seller will not explain conflicting hardware or refuses identification photos.
How to interpret common mismatches
Flat cover on an S14 or S15 listing
A flat cover conflicts with the humped-cover pattern associated with S14 and S15 hardware. Ask whether the cover or head was changed and request VTC, ignition and stamping photographs. Without a documented explanation, do not pay an S14 or S15 premium.
Humped cover on an S13 listing
A humped cover conflicts with the usual S13 flat-cover, non-VTC pattern. The engine may have a later head or a mixed assembly. Treat it as such until the stamping, wiring and donor documents establish otherwise.

Correct-looking engine, missing ECU and harness
Visual hardware may support a generation, but missing electronics prevent a complete specification check. Value the engine as an incomplete package and require the seller to identify exactly what is absent.
Compression numbers without provenance
Even, documented compression readings support condition only. They cannot authenticate the donor, so continue the stamping and paperwork checks.
Unreadable or altered stamping
An unreadable, ground, restamped or deliberately obscured number removes a key provenance check. Ask for independent inspection and documentation; if the seller cannot provide it, treat the engine’s origin as unverified.
Compare genuine engines on the factors that affect value
| Decision axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Generation and specification | S13, S14 or S15 hardware; VTC and ignition configuration | Determines compatibility with the intended chassis and wiring strategy |
| Provenance | Readable block stamping, donor VIN, auction or import papers | Supports the claimed origin and reduces the risk of an incorrectly labeled engine |
| Completeness | Turbo, intake, injectors, ignition, sensors, ECU and harness included and matched | Shows whether the quoted price covers a usable package or a bare assembly |
| Mechanical condition | Compression, leak-down, oil pressure, smoke, end play and cooling evidence | Indicates rebuilding or repair risk independently of identity |
| Seller protection | Written description, photographs taken before shipment, test evidence and return terms | Gives you recourse if the delivered engine differs from the listing |
When two engines are both genuinely identified, choose on compatibility, completeness, condition and seller protection rather than on the nickname painted on the cover.
Questions to send a seller before purchase
- What original chassis and market did this engine come from?
- What year, transmission, ECU, harness, turbo and injectors were associated with the donor?
- Is the engine complete, and which parts have been replaced or modified?
- Can you provide straight-on and angled photographs of the block engine-type and serial stamping?
- Can you provide the donor VIN, auction sheet, import record or dismantler documentation?
- Which rocker-cover, VTC and ignition arrangement does the engine have?
- Are compression, leak-down, oil-pressure, cooling and turbo checks documented with their test conditions?
- Will the invoice list the stamped number, included components, test results and return terms?
Written answers make contradictions visible before money changes hands. A seller who supplies only a color nickname or a single compression figure has not established the engine’s identity.
Final buying standard
Buy an SR20DET as a documented specification, not as a label. The strongest package combines a model-consistent cover, VTC and ignition layout; matching intake, turbo, injectors, sensors, ECU and harness; readable block identification; donor VIN or import paperwork; and condition tests recorded separately. If any one element conflicts, ask for a documented explanation and price the engine as a mixed or unverified assembly until the evidence is resolved.
