To identify a 1971 muscle car, decode the VIN and the factory body tag as two separate records, then check whether their model year, body style, assembly plant, trim, paint, and date information agree with the car. Start with the make, model, body style, and likely plant; there is no universal 1971 muscle-car codebook. Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, and Chrysler products used different VIN formats, tag names, field positions, and plant practices.
Why the VIN and factory tag are different records
The VIN identifies the vehicle as it was registered and completed at final assembly. Depending on the make and year, it can encode the division or make, series, body style, model year, final-assembly plant, and production sequence. The exact character positions are manufacturer-specific.

The factory body tag was used for production information. Depending on the make, it can show a body style, body-unit number, trim, paint, body date, order information, or selected equipment codes. It is not necessarily a complete option list and is not, by itself, a guarantee that every component on the car is original.

A body-unit number is not expected to match the VIN sequence. On a Chevelle, for example, Fisher Body assigned its own body number, while the final assembly operation assigned the VIN sequence. A numerical match would be coincidence, not proof that the records belong together.

These distinctions matter when a seller claims that a car is a genuine high-performance model. A consistent VIN and tag are useful evidence, but a disputed or incomplete code calls for more documentation rather than an instant conclusion.
Start with the car’s identity, not a generic decoder
Establish the vehicle family
Write down the claimed make, model, body style, engine family if known, and any clue to the assembly plant. “1971 muscle car” can describe cars with entirely different numbering systems. A 1971 Chevelle, Pontiac GTO, Ford Mustang, and Dodge Charger do not share a common tag layout or code dictionary.
Use a reference written for the exact model year, model, and plant. Even within one manufacturer, a field can move, change meaning, or be omitted at a different plant.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Locate and photograph the VIN
On the cited 1971 Chevelle and Pontiac GTO examples, the VIN plate is at the upper or forward area of the dashboard and can be read through the windshield. Confirm the location for the particular make and model before assuming a plate is missing. Photograph the entire plate, its fasteners, and the surrounding surface without removing or disturbing it.
Record every character exactly as it appears. Do not silently “correct” a questionable digit, replace a worn character with what you expect, or rely on a partial transcription from a listing.
Find the correct factory tag
GM cars may have a Fisher Body or cowl tag. A 1971 Mustang uses a door-mounted data plate and also has a VIN marking on the driver-side inner fender. A 1971 Mopar may have a fender tag and a broadcast sheet. These are different records, not interchangeable names for the same plate.
Photograph the tag in place before cleaning, repainting, or removing anything. If a marking is hard to view, an inspection mirror can help you read it without dismantling the car; it is an aid, not an authentication method.

Transcribe before you interpret
- Make a literal copy. Preserve letters, numbers, spaces, line breaks, punctuation, and the order of each line. Record uncertain characters separately rather than guessing.
- Keep the image with the transcription. Include a straight-on photograph and wider photographs showing where the tag is mounted. Fasteners, rivets, paint layers, and surrounding metal can be relevant when authenticity is disputed.
- Identify the plant. Use the VIN and the model-specific reference to determine which plant table applies. A tag diagram for one plant may not fit another plant from the same year.
- Decode each record independently. First explain what the VIN says, then what the tag says. Compare only fields that both records were intended to identify.
- Check the story against the car. Compare the decoded body style, trim, paint, date, and plant with the vehicle’s physical configuration and the seller’s documentation.
A tag date should be treated with the precision the code supports. In a 1971 Chevelle example, 06C indicates June, third week. The week letter does not establish a precise calendar day, so do not convert it into an exact build date.
How to decode a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle VIN
The cited Chevelle example is 136671R173972. In that Chevrolet system, the characters are read as follows:
| Position | Example | Meaning in the cited 1971 Chevelle system |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 |
Chevrolet division |
| 2–3 | 36 |
Series; the listed Chevrolet series use odd/even series digits to distinguish six-cylinder and V8 families |
| 4–5 | 67 |
Body style |
| 6 | 1 |
1971 model year |
| 7 | R |
Final assembly plant |
| 8–13 | 173972 |
Assembly sequence number |
This interpretation belongs to the cited Chevrolet format. Do not transfer the positions or meanings to a Pontiac, Ford, or Chrysler vehicle. The VIN plate is described as being on the forward dash, visible through the windshield.
The VIN can establish the claimed Chevrolet division, series family, body style, year, plant, and sequence. It does not by itself reproduce every option installed on the car. Engine and package claims need additional vehicle-specific evidence.

VIN example
The cited Pontiac example is 242671A100001. It represents a Pontiac division vehicle in the GTO series, with a convertible body style, 1971 model year, Atlanta assembly plant, and a serial sequence. The VIN plate is described at the left top of the instrument panel, visible through the windshield.
The example demonstrates why a generic decoder is unsafe: Pontiac’s sequence and labels are not the same as Chevrolet’s, even though both are GM products from 1971.
Sample body tag
A sample GTO tag is shown as ST 71-24237 PON 123456 BDY, with separate trim, date, paint, and accessory-code fields. Treat this as an example of a Pontiac tag layout, not a universal GM template. A tag can help establish the body configuration, finishing information, and production timing, but it is not a complete substitute for factory build documentation.

If a GTO’s identity depends on a specific performance package, seek a build sheet or other period documentation that records the relevant option code. A VIN and a visually plausible tag are stronger when they are supported by independent records.
What a 1971 Chevelle Fisher Body or cowl tag can tell you
The 1971 Chevelle tag reference describes fields that can include a Fisher Body style number, plant designation, body number, trim code, paint code, and body assembly date. The line arrangement and details varied between assembly plants, so first identify the plant version.
Body style and series are not the same field
Do not confuse the series depiction on a Fisher Body plate with the series meaning in the VIN. The VIN and body tag were created for different production purposes and can use different representations. Decode each field using the correct Chevrolet table before comparing it with the car’s advertised model.
Body number and VIN sequence
The Fisher Body unit number tracks the body operation; the VIN’s final digits represent the assembly sequence assigned at final assembly. They are independent numbering systems. A mismatch between those numbers is normal, while an apparent match proves nothing by itself.
Date, trim, and paint
Trim and paint codes can test whether the interior and exterior colors fit the tag. The body date can help place the car in a production window. Neither field proves that every present-day component is original, and an approximate week code should not be presented as a precise day.
Ford Mustang: use the data plate and inner-fender VIN separately
The cited 1971 Mustang reference distinguishes the VIN from the door-mounted data plate. The data plate can contain body, paint, trim, date, district or order, axle, and transmission codes. The car also has a VIN marking on the driver-side inner fender.
Use a 1971 Mustang-specific guide to interpret those codes. GM Fisher Body terminology does not apply to the Ford plate, and a Mustang data plate should not be decoded with a Chevelle diagram. Compare the body, paint, trim, date, axle, and transmission information with the actual car and with any surviving documentation.

Because the data plate records selected production information rather than every possible component, it should be treated as one part of an originality review. A claimed engine or performance package may require additional factory paperwork or physical identifiers.
Mopar: fender tags, broadcast sheets, and plant differences
A 1971 Mopar can have a fender tag and, when preserved, a broadcast sheet. For a 1971 Charger Super Bee built at Lynch Road, the cited reference describes tag information for paint, engine and transmission, axle and brakes, interior trim, and vehicle order number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlant-specific fields
The Lynch Road plant added information not used by St. Louis and Los Angeles in the cited example. Therefore, a Lynch Road diagram cannot be treated as a universal decoder for every 1971 Charger or every Mopar assembly plant.
Why the broadcast sheet matters
The fender tag may omit options because the broadcast sheet was used by the plant to build the car. If a high-value claim depends on a particular package or equipment combination, a surviving broadcast sheet can provide evidence that the tag alone does not contain.
Do not use a modern VIN lookup
Modern VIN services generally expect a 17-character VIN. The cited 1971 Charger material describes a 13-digit VIN, illustrating why a contemporary lookup cannot replace a period-correct decoding reference. Count the characters and identify the original manufacturer system before entering anything into a modern database.
How to compare the VIN and tag without overclaiming
| Comparison | What agreement can support | What it cannot prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| Model year | That the decoded VIN and date information fit a 1971 vehicle | That every component is original |
| Body style | That the claimed coupe, convertible, or other body configuration is plausible | That a performance package was installed |
| Assembly plant | That the correct plant-specific tag reference was used | That the car has never been repaired or re-bodied |
| Trim and paint | That the interior and exterior specification fits the recorded codes | That the current colors have never been changed |
| Body date | That the production timing is broadly consistent | An exact build day or delivery date |
| Option evidence | That a listed code or surviving record supports an equipment claim | A complete option list when the tag omits equipment |
Use the comparison as a consistency test. A car can have matching records and still contain replaced parts; a discrepancy can arise from a transcription error, the wrong plant chart, or a record that was never intended to list the disputed option.
What to do when the numbers or codes do not match
- Recheck the photograph. Worn stamps, shadows, and similar characters can turn one digit into another. Compare the transcription with the original image.
- Confirm the reference. Verify the year, make, model, body style, and assembly plant. A correct code read against the wrong plant table is still a wrong decoding.
- Separate numbering systems. Confirm whether the disputed number is a VIN sequence, body-unit number, order number, or another production identifier.
- Mark omitted information. Determine whether the tag was designed to carry the option being claimed. Mopar plant examples show that some options were left to the broadcast sheet.
- Inspect the physical vehicle. Check whether the decoded body style, trim, paint, and drivetrain are consistent with the car, while remembering that parts can be replaced.
- Collect independent records. Look for a build sheet, period paperwork, or other vehicle-specific documentation when the value of the claim depends on an option or rare configuration.
- Ask a marque specialist. For a valuable car or a suspected altered identification plate, have the evidence reviewed by someone familiar with that exact make, model, and plant.
A mismatch is a reason to pause and investigate, not automatic proof of fraud. Conversely, a clean-looking tag is not conclusive proof of authenticity if the claim rests on equipment that the tag does not record.

Answers to common identification questions
How do I decode a 1971 car VIN?
First identify the make and model, then use a 1971 reference for that manufacturer and assembly plant. Read the VIN by its original character positions; do not apply a modern 17-character decoder or another make’s chart. The 1971 Chevelle and Pontiac GTO examples show different formats and meanings.
Where is the VIN on a 1971 car?
The cited Chevelle and GTO examples place the VIN plate on the upper or forward dashboard, visible through the windshield. A 1971 Mustang also has a VIN marking on the driver-side inner fender. Locations vary by make and model, so verify the specific vehicle rather than assuming every 1971 car uses one location.
What does the cowl tag tell me?
On a 1971 Chevelle, the Fisher Body or cowl tag can identify body style, plant, body number, trim, paint, and an approximate body assembly date, with layout differences between plants. It is a production record, not necessarily a complete list of options.
Does the tag prove this is a genuine performance model?
No. The tag can support a claim when its fields fit the VIN and the car, but high-performance or package claims should be corroborated with a build sheet, period documentation, or other vehicle-specific identifiers. A Mopar fender tag, for example, may omit options recorded on the broadcast sheet.
Should the body number match the VIN?
No. The Chevelle Fisher Body unit number and the final-assembly VIN sequence were assigned by separate processes. Expecting them to match can create a false discrepancy.
Bottom line for buyers and restorers
Decode the VIN and factory tag independently, using the exact 1971 make-, model-, and plant-specific system. Use agreement on year, body style, plant, trim, paint, and approximate date as a consistency check, not as a complete originality certificate. When an expensive claim depends on an engine, package, or rare model designation, require supporting factory records and a specialist review before treating the identity as established.
