Contact the airline operating the diverted flight immediately. Ask it to protect or rebook every remaining segment to the final destination printed on your ticket, explain what meals or overnight care it will provide, and tell you where your checked baggage will go. Keep the original itinerary, all replacement confirmations, receipts, and a dated record of what happened. A diversion across the Pacific does not automatically create a right to compensation, a hotel, or a particular replacement flight; those outcomes depend on your reservation, route, operating carrier, diversion reason, arrival delay, and the passenger-protection rules that apply.
Your first priorities at the diversion airport
Do these tasks in order. If you are still airborne or have not yet reached the terminal, use the airline app or airport Wi-Fi as soon as it is safe to do so. The operating carrier is normally the party that can confirm the disruption and arrange the next segment, even when you bought the ticket through a different airline or travel agency.

1. Contact the operating airline
Use the airline app, a transfer desk, a gate agent, a customer-service counter, or the carrier’s telephone channel. State that the diversion has caused, or is likely to cause, a missed connection. Ask the representative to record the disruption and to confirm your onward plan in writing.

- Ask whether the original onward flight is still being held, whether you have been rebooked, and when the new itinerary will be issued.
- Request protection through to the final destination shown on the ticket, not merely a seat to the diversion airport.
- Ask what assistance is available while you wait and whether you must obtain approval before paying for anything yourself.
If the first representative cannot help, ask for a supervisor or the carrier’s disruption desk. Keep screenshots of app messages and write down the time, location, employee name or desk number, and the instructions you received.

2. Confirm the entire replacement itinerary
Do not leave the desk with only a verbal promise. Check every segment, connection time, airport code, terminal, operating carrier, and final arrival time. A reroute that ends at the diversion airport, a nearby city, or a different airport in the same metropolitan area may not complete the ticketed journey.
Request a new confirmation or an itinerary receipt. Keep the original booking as well; it helps show what the airline was originally required to transport and how the disruption changed the plan.
3. Ask about care during the wait
If the new departure is delayed or an overnight stay is possible, ask specifically about meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation, transport between the airport and hotel, and communication support such as a phone call. Ask whether the airline will issue vouchers, arrange the booking directly, or authorize you to pay and claim reasonable costs later. The answer can depend on the applicable law, the reason for the diversion, and the carrier’s policy.

Ask whether checked bags remain at the diversion airport, will be delivered to you, or will be transferred to the revised flight. Confirm the baggage tag numbers and obtain written instructions for collection, customs, re-checking, and delivery. Keep receipts for necessary baggage-related expenses and report missing or damaged bags through the carrier’s baggage channel before leaving the airport when possible.
5. Start a dated timeline
Record the scheduled and actual times, the diversion airport, the stated reason, when you learned that the connection was missed, every contact with the airline, assistance requested, assistance received, and the time you finally reach the ticketed destination. Save boarding passes, diversion notices, text messages, emails, replacement itineraries, baggage documents, and itemized receipts.
Why the word “transpacific” is not enough to determine your rights
A Pacific crossing can involve several legal systems. The decisive facts are the place where the journey began and ends, the airports used, the carrier operating each flight, whether all flights were on one reservation, the diversion reason, and your final arrival delay. A flight that crosses the Pacific is not automatically covered by one worldwide compensation rule.

One reservation or separate tickets
When all segments are on one reservation, the airline can generally see the complete itinerary and a missed connection is easier to evaluate as one disrupted journey. Some passenger-rights regimes expressly condition missed-connection protections on a single reservation. If you bought separate tickets, the second airline may treat you as a no-show even when the first carrier caused the delay. Ask the first carrier for help, but do not assume it must replace a separately purchased ticket.

The airline whose code appears on the ticket may not be the airline that flew the diverted aircraft. Identify the operating carrier on the boarding pass and contact it at the airport. Also notify the ticketing or marketing carrier if the booking channel directs you there. Keep the names of both carriers in your records because responsibility and claim procedures can differ.
Origin, destination, and diversion airport
Write down the exact airports and countries, including any airport change in a metropolitan area. The same delay can produce different rights depending on whether the trip started in the European Union, ended there, touched Canada, or was an international journey governed by the Montreal Convention. A diversion to an airport that does not serve the booked city, town, or region receives special treatment under EU rules, but that does not mean every Pacific route is covered by EU law.
Reason for the diversion
Ask the airline to state the reason in writing if possible. Weather, air-traffic restrictions, a medical event, a security issue, or an aircraft problem may be treated differently under a particular rule. Do not argue about the classification at the counter; obtain the carrier’s explanation and preserve evidence for a later claim.
Choosing among rebooking options
Airlines may offer more than one route. Compare the options against the ticketed final destination rather than choosing solely by the first available departure.

When European Union passenger rights may apply
EU guidance describes a conditional framework for missed connections. It can apply when the flights were part of a single reservation, the route falls within EU passenger-rights coverage, the final destination is reached more than three hours late, and extraordinary circumstances did not cause the delay. The three-hour measure is based on arrival at the final destination, not merely the time you reach the diversion airport or the first missed connection.
How a diversion is treated
EU guidance says a diversion to an airport that does not serve the booked city, town, or region is treated as a cancellation under EU rules. Whether the rule covers your itinerary still depends on the route and operating-carrier facts. Do not infer coverage solely from the fact that the aircraft crossed the Pacific.
What to request in a covered cancellation situation
Official guidance describes a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, plus care while you wait. Care can include meals and refreshments in proportion to the waiting time and hotel accommodation with transport when an overnight stay is necessary. Ask the airline to provide or authorize these services before paying yourself.

Claiming necessary expenses
The European Commission’s interpretative guidance states that, when required care was not offered, necessary, reasonable, and appropriate expenses for meals, accommodation, airport transport, and communication may be claimed from the carrier. Keep itemized receipts and evidence that the amounts were reasonable in the circumstances. A premium room, alcohol, sightseeing, or an unrelated purchase is harder to connect to the required care.
International delay claims under the Montreal Convention
For an international itinerary, the U.S. Department of Transportation explains that passengers may be able to recover expenses resulting from delay under Article 19 of the Montreal Convention by filing a claim with the airline. This is a possible claim for delay-related damages, not a guaranteed flat compensation payment. Show how each expense resulted from the delay and attach receipts and the relevant itinerary records.
The Department of Transportation separately advises asking airline staff whether the carrier will pay for meals or a phone call during a delay. Ask before spending where possible, and follow the carrier’s instructions about approved vendors, limits, and claim submission. The Convention claim and any voluntary meal or hotel policy are separate questions; receiving a voucher does not by itself establish a fixed cash entitlement.

When Canadian protections may be relevant
Canadian rules can matter when the itinerary qualifies under Canadian passenger-protection regulations. The Canadian Transportation Agency describes refund or rebooking provisions for certain lengthy delays and cancellations outside the airline’s control when the carrier cannot complete the itinerary within a reasonable time.

Use every official channel
Try the airline app, airport service desk, telephone line, social-support channel, and the operating carrier’s transfer desk. Take a screenshot showing an outage or unavailable service. If another airline or airport contractor is handling the desk, ask for the operating carrier’s disruption contact and note the time you asked.
Pay only for necessary, reasonable needs
If the carrier does not provide assistance that appears to apply, choose modest, necessary expenses that directly address the wait: basic meals, suitable accommodation, transport between the airport and that accommodation, and essential communication. Keep itemized receipts and avoid upgrades or unrelated purchases. If you have no practical choice but to buy a replacement ticket, first document that the airline refused or could not provide a reasonable reroute and ask whether reimbursement will be considered. A self-purchased ticket is not automatically reimbursable.
Consider a power bank as a practical aid
A charged phone lets you receive rebooking messages, save documents, and contact the carrier during a long airport wait. A portable power bank is a general convenience, not a required item and not evidence of any legal entitlement. Keep spare batteries in carry-on baggage according to the applicable airport and airline safety rules.
How to submit a written request or expense claim
- Wait until the itinerary is stable. Obtain the final replacement confirmation and the actual arrival time at the ticketed destination.
- Use the carrier’s official claim channel. Follow the link or instructions in the airline’s disruption email, app, or customer-relations page. If the ticketing agency handled the booking, send a copy there as well when instructed.
- Identify the journey precisely. Include passenger names, booking reference, ticket number if available, every flight number, scheduled and actual times, origin, diversion airport, final destination, and operating carrier.
- Describe the disruption. State when the aircraft diverted, the reason given, how the connection was missed, and when you reached the final destination. Distinguish facts you observed from the airline’s stated reason.
- List assistance requested and received. Note whether meals, hotel, transport, communication, or rerouting were offered, refused, unavailable, or paid directly by you.
- Itemize each amount. Give the date, vendor, currency, purpose, and amount. Attach legible receipts and proof of payment, while keeping the originals.
- Ask for a written decision. Request the rule or policy used, the amount approved or denied, and the next appeal or regulator route if the answer is unsatisfactory.
Common situations and the safest response
The airline offers a route that arrives earlier but changes airports
Ask whether the replacement completes the ticketed destination and who pays for ground transport between airports. Confirm baggage and immigration requirements before accepting. Get the airport change and cost responsibility in writing.

You are told to collect your bag during the diversion
Ask whether customs clearance is required, whether the bag will be re-tagged, and whether you must return it to the airline. Keep the baggage receipt and any transport or storage receipts that the carrier authorizes.
The next flight is the following day
Ask about a hotel, airport transport, meals, and communication. Confirm check-in time for the replacement flight and whether your bag will be held or delivered. If no assistance is offered, make only necessary and reasonable arrangements and preserve proof that you sought help first.
You booked the onward flight separately
Tell both carriers what happened, but expect the second carrier to apply its own missed-flight rules. Ask the first airline whether it will make a goodwill or operational arrangement; do not represent that a legal right exists unless the applicable rule and ticket terms support it.
The airline says the diversion was extraordinary
Ask for the reason in writing and keep the response. Under EU guidance, extraordinary circumstances can affect conditional compensation, but they do not automatically answer every question about rerouting, care, baggage, or expense reimbursement.
Documents to keep before leaving the airport
- Original booking confirmation and e-ticket receipt
- Boarding passes for every flown segment
- Diversion notice, delay message, and the airline’s stated reason
- Replacement itinerary and any rerouting authorization
- Baggage tags, claim reports, and delivery instructions
- Names or identifiers of staff contacted and a dated contact log
- Itemized receipts and proof of payment for meals, lodging, transport, and communication
- Evidence of the actual arrival time at the ticketed final destination
Rules and airline policies can change. The official EU, U.S. Department of Transportation, Canadian Transportation Agency, and carrier guidance current to your travel date should control the final claim assessment.
The Bottom Line
Secure a confirmed itinerary to the ticketed final destination first; then document the diversion, ask for care, track baggage, and claim only the assistance or delay-related expenses supported by the route, ticket, carrier, and applicable law.
