1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe quickest way to enjoy a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS at a track day is not to disable every aid or chase a qualifying lap. Prepare the exact car against its owner’s manual and the circuit’s rules, begin at a measured pace, learn the track and traffic system, and change only one driving or setup variable at a time. Porsche provides track-specific aerodynamic positions, staged stability and traction-control settings, circuit-aware tire-pressure monitoring and the Track Precision app; each is most useful when introduced progressively and with instruction.
Know what the GT4 RS can—and cannot—do for you
The launch-specification 718 Cayman GT4 RS is a mid-engine sports car with a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six producing 500 PS (368 kW). Porsche’s launch material lists a 1,415 kg kerb weight, while the GT4 RS brochure describes 20-inch forged-aluminium wheels; forged-magnesium wheels are available with the Weissach package. Those figures describe a highly capable car, not a substitute for track experience, coaching or judgment.

Porsche says the front diffuser and rear wing can be placed in racetrack Performance positions. In that configuration, Porsche reports approximately 25% more downforce than the 718 Cayman GT4. That is a manufacturer comparison for the specified configuration, not an independently measured lap-time or safety guarantee. Use the positions only as your car’s instructions and event rules allow.
Prepare the car and yourself before leaving home
Confirm the event’s operating rules
Track-day requirements vary by organizer and venue. Before loading the car, obtain the current supplementary regulations and driver briefing information. Confirm:
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
- Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
- 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
- Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
- Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.
- Sound limits and any required exhaust or drive-by testing.
- Helmet standards, clothing rules, passenger restrictions and whether an instructor is supplied.
- Passing zones, hand signals, flags, pit-lane speed, pit-entry and pit-exit procedures.
- Weather cancellation policy, wet-session rules, noise curfews and session timetable.
- Whether the circuit requires a specific tow hook, number panels, fire extinguisher or other equipment.
Arrive early enough to attend the mandatory briefing. A fast car cannot compensate for missing a flag, entering the track incorrectly or misunderstanding passing rules.
Use the correct manual for your car
Check the owner’s manual for the exact model year, market and specification before changing any control, aerodynamic component or tire setting. Porsche’s manual portal notes that illustrations and vehicle equipment can differ by specification; a generic 718 Cayman procedure should not automatically be applied to a GT4 RS. The manual for your vehicle identification number takes precedence over advice from a forum or a video.
Inspect tires, wheels and brakes
Check tire condition, age, sidewalls, tread, valve stems and wheel fasteners before the event. Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords or uneven wear. Inspect brake discs and pads for damage or unexpectedly low material, and resolve warning lights before driving on circuit. Arrange maintenance through qualified Porsche service guidance when a condition is outside your knowledge or the manual’s limits.
No universal GT4 RS track-day checklist, brake-fluid interval or fixed circuit tire pressure can responsibly be applied to every market and setup from the available Porsche material. Use the applicable manual, tire maker’s instructions, service advice and event guidance instead of adopting a number copied from another car.
Pack a paddock kit
- A reliable tire-pressure gauge and a way to record readings.
- Helmet and required personal safety equipment.
- Water, food, weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen and hearing protection.
- Basic cleaning supplies, wheel-nut tools specified for your car and a phone charger.
- Any organizer-required documents, timing transponder or number panels.
A gauge is useful for checking changes between sessions, but it does not create a correct target pressure. The target must come from the applicable Porsche and tire guidance and from conditions at your circuit.
Set the car deliberately, not for appearance
Aerodynamic Performance positions
Porsche describes the front-diffuser and rear-wing Performance positions as racetrack-only settings. Confirm the procedure and permitted configuration in your manual before the first session, and make sure the event permits the adjustment. Do not alter the aero because an online post says a particular setting is faster; ride height, tires, weather, traffic and circuit layout all affect the result.

Porsche identifies staged reductions in electronic assistance. The described choices include factory assistance, ESC OFF and ESC plus traction control OFF; ABS remains the exception in Porsche’s description. Reducing assistance transfers more responsibility for throttle, steering and correcting slides to the driver.
For a first day, keep the documented factory setting unless an experienced instructor who understands the GT4 RS recommends a change for your ability, conditions and the event’s rules. A warning light or flashing intervention is information about grip and inputs, not proof that the system is slowing you unfairly. Learn what each mode does in a controlled progression rather than treating “everything off” as the goal.
Understand tire pressure and temperature without guessing
The GT4 RS tire-pressure monitoring system includes a race-track mode that considers tire pressure and temperature for circuit use. That feature helps the car interpret track conditions; it does not provide one universal pressure target for every tire, ambient temperature, circuit or driving style.
A practical session-to-session routine
- Before leaving the paddock, record cold pressures, ambient temperature, tire type and the wheel position of each tire.
- Enter the documented circuit or race-track TPM mode using the exact manual procedure for your car.
- Drive the opening laps at a measured pace. Avoid trying to create a pressure reading by weaving aggressively or braking unusually hard.
- Return through the pit lane, allow the car to settle safely and record the system’s warnings, displayed values and your observations.
- Use the applicable Porsche and tire guidance, plus an instructor or qualified technician, to decide whether a change is appropriate. Change one variable only.
- Inspect for overheating signs, abnormal wear, damage or a pressure warning before going out again.
Do not publish or follow a “GT4 RS track pressure” number as though it were factory law. Tire construction, road approval, circuit temperature, wet or dry conditions and the car’s equipment all change the answer. If a warning appears, reduce pace safely, return to the pits when permitted and investigate rather than continuing to chase a lap.

Use the first sessions to learn the circuit
Session one: orientation and margin
Use the event’s novice or instructed session if available. Learn the flag system, pit entry and exit, passing rules and track limits before increasing speed. On the first green laps, identify braking boards, turn-in points, apexes, corner exits, surface changes and marshal posts. Keep a margin from the edge of the track so an error does not become a spin or an excursion.

Drive smoothly enough that your line and references are repeatable. The objective is not a headline lap; it is to finish with a clear mental map and no surprises.
Session two: establish repeatability
Choose one goal, such as using the same braking reference for a particular corner or looking farther through the exit. Keep the car’s mode, tire state and aero configuration unchanged. Compare several laps rather than one best lap. If traffic, yellow flags or cooling laps interrupt the sequence, treat the laps as different conditions instead of forcing a time comparison.
Later sessions: add one variable
Only after you can repeat a line should you examine a new variable: a slightly different braking release, a revised visual reference or a documented assistance setting. Tell your instructor exactly what changed. If the car becomes less predictable, return to the previous setting and continue learning; a slower but repeatable lap is more useful than a fast lap you cannot reproduce.

Brake, turn and accelerate with the GT4 RS
Build braking references
Begin braking earlier than your road instincts suggest and move the reference later only when you can stop consistently. Keep your eyes up, release the brake smoothly toward turn-in and avoid adding a second correction because the first reference was optimistic. Track surface, temperature, traffic and tire condition can move the effective braking point from lap to lap.
Make the corner one connected task
Use a stable entry, a deliberate turn-in and a progressive exit rather than abrupt steering and throttle changes. The mid-engine layout can feel balanced while still responding quickly to an aggressive input. If the car understeers or oversteers, note speed, gear, steering, throttle and surface condition before changing a setting. Do not diagnose a chassis problem from one compromised lap.
Prioritize exits and traffic awareness
Look through the corner and plan where a safe pass or merge can occur under the organizer’s rules. Give a slower car room, obey passing signals and never use a blind corner to prove a point. A clean exit and awareness of other cars improve both safety and learning more than forcing an entry speed.

Use driver aids as teaching tools
With factory assistance enabled, notice when ESC or traction control intervenes and what input preceded it. Was the throttle abrupt, was the tire loaded over a bump, or did you ask for too much speed on entry? This feedback can expose a technique issue without turning the session into a test of bravery.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review data with the Track Precision app
Porsche says the Track Precision app records, displays and analyzes driving data on a phone or other mobile device. It is a review aid, not a replacement for instruction or situational awareness.
Set it up before the session
- Install and configure the app before arriving at pit exit, following the current Porsche instructions for your vehicle and phone.
- Secure the phone so it cannot move, obstruct the driver or become a projectile. Confirm battery charge, storage and any required permissions.
- Choose the correct circuit or recording mode and verify that the device is capturing a test recording before going on track.
- Tell an instructor that you are recording, but keep your attention on flags, traffic and the road.
Review only useful comparisons
After a cool-down, examine a small number of repeatable observations: where speed was lost before a corner, whether braking release was consistent, or whether one line produced a better exit. Compare laps only when traffic, flags, weather and tire condition make the comparison meaningful. A displayed trace is not proof that the app or driver was error-free; use it to form a question for an instructor.
When a specialist setup makes sense
Porsche describes the Manthey Kit for the GT4 RS as optimized for track performance and including adjustable, track-adaptable suspension. That makes it an optional specialist path, not required equipment for a first track day.
| Choice | Best fit | Questions to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| Standard GT4 RS | Learning the car, mixed road use and building consistent technique. | Can you repeat your line and braking points? Are tires and brakes healthy? Do you understand the manual’s settings? |
| Specialist track setup | Experienced drivers with a defined circuit objective and regular track use. | What circuit problem will it solve? Who will install and support it? How will road comfort, tire wear, service and legality be affected? |
Do not infer that a kit automatically makes a driver faster or safer. A setup change can alter balance, tire temperatures and the way the car communicates. Establish a baseline in the standard car, record the conditions and change one component or adjustment at a time.

Common problems and safe responses
A tire-pressure warning appears
Ease the pace, avoid abrupt inputs and return to the pits when safe. Check the displayed information and the tire physically for damage. Do not simply clear the warning and continue; identify whether pressure, temperature, a puncture or an incorrect mode caused it.
The car feels inconsistent
Stop adding variables. Record fuel level, tire condition, weather, traffic and the exact assistance and aero settings. Ask an instructor or qualified technician to inspect the car before the next session.
You are chasing a single fast lap
Reset the goal to three repeatable laps with clean references. A lap affected by traffic, a yellow flag or a tire at a different temperature is not a fair baseline.
You are unsure about a control or adjustment
Leave it unchanged and consult the exact owner’s manual or Porsche-qualified support. Guessing at a performance setting is not a learning method.
A repeatable end-of-day review
- Save app recordings and note which laps were affected by traffic, flags or weather.
- Record tire observations, warnings and any pressure checks without treating them as universal targets.
- Write down one technique that improved and one question for your next instructor session.
- Restore any track-only configuration as required by the manual and event rules before driving on public roads.
- Inspect tires, wheels, brakes and bodywork, and arrange qualified service if anything is damaged or outside specification.
The GT4 RS gives you substantial performance in standard form. You get the most from it by preserving margin, learning the circuit, using Porsche’s documented systems deliberately and building speed only after your inputs are repeatable.
