There is no single Tesla door-release procedure: the controls vary by model, model year and configuration, and front and rear doors may use different mechanisms. If there has been a crash, contact local emergency services when the situation is an emergency. If the vehicle has lost power, use the instructions for your exact Tesla rather than assuming another model’s release will work.
The main practical distinction is between a powered door control and a manual release intended for a no-power situation. A familiar-looking release may be in a different place—or may not exist—on another Tesla or generation. The window may also behave differently when power is unavailable. Learn the procedure for your own vehicle before you need it, and follow emergency responders’ instructions after a crash.

If there has been a crash
Prioritize personal safety and emergency help. Tesla’s accident guidance says to put Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck in Park, contact Tesla Roadside Assistance after an accident, and contact local emergency services if it is an emergency. A Tesla can be silent even while its powertrain is energized, so do not treat silence as proof that the vehicle is powered down.

The accident guidance applies across the named models, but the exit hardware does not work the same way across them. If you can safely use the matching manual release, follow the instructions for the exact vehicle and door. If the procedure does not match what you see, or a release is inaccessible or damaged, do not experiment. The rescue procedures in Tesla’s first-responder materials are for trained responders, not a set of high-voltage isolation steps for occupants.
Find the release for your exact vehicle
In the cited manuals, the front-door manual release for Model 3, Model Y, newer Model S and Model X is near the window switches. That broad similarity does not make the procedures interchangeable: rear-door releases differ, and some are not fitted to every vehicle. Check the current owner manual for your model and production generation before relying on a location or action.
| Vehicle and manual coverage | Front door with no power | Rear door with no power | Window or configuration caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3, 2017–2023 manual | Pull up the manual door release in front of the window switches. | The cited manual says only the front doors have a manual release. | The window does not automatically lower when the door opens. The 2017–2023 rear-door limitation should not be assumed for another year or build. |
| Model Y, 2020–2024 manual | Pull up the front-door manual release in front of the window switches. | Some configurations have an optional release: remove the mat at the bottom of the rear-door pocket, press the red tab to remove the access door, and pull the mechanical cable forward. | Not all Model Y vehicles have a rear manual release. The window does not automatically lower when the door opens this way. |
| Newer Model S manual cited | Pull up the front-door release in front of the window switches. | Fold back the carpet edge below the rear seat to expose the cable, then pull it toward the center of the vehicle. | The window does not automatically lower. Check the manual matching the vehicle’s generation. |
| Model S, 2012–2020 manual | The cited manual says front doors open as usual using the interior handles when there is no electrical power. | Access the mechanical cable beneath the rear-seat carpet and pull it as described in that manual. | Its front-door behavior differs from the newer Model S instructions; do not assume one generation’s method applies to all Model S vehicles. |
| Model X manual cited | Use the front-door manual release in front of the window switches. | For a Falcon Wing rear door, carefully remove the speaker grille, pull the cable down and toward the front of the vehicle, then manually lift the door after the latch releases. | The cited manual warns that the window may not lower automatically. The rear procedure is specific to this door and trim access. |
The cited procedures come from Tesla owner manuals; the year ranges shown are the coverage identified for those manuals, not a guarantee that every vehicle in that range has identical trim or equipment. Tesla’s owner-manual index and first-responder resource index organize material by model and, in some cases, year group. Use the manual matching your actual vehicle rather than relying on a general model name.
Model-year labels alone may not settle the question. Tesla’s first-responder index separates 2017–2023 Model 3 materials from 2024-and-newer materials, and lists separate current and 2020–2024 Model Y resource groups. Those divisions are a reminder to check the material for the vehicle’s production generation and configuration, not to carry an older manual’s limitation forward to every later build.
Opening a front door when power is lost
Model 3 and Model Y
For the cited Model 3 (2017–2023) and Model Y (2020–2024) manuals, the front-door manual release is in front of the window switches. Pull it up to open the door when the vehicle has no power. Do not use this release while the vehicle is moving; Tesla explicitly warns against doing so.
The front-door instruction is relatively similar for these two cited manuals, but that should not be mistaken for a universal Tesla rule. Confirm that the control and wording match your vehicle’s owner manual. If you are reviewing instructions in advance, read the no-power section for both the front and rear doors: knowing the front release does not establish that a rear release is present.

Newer Model S and Model X
The cited newer Model S and Model X manuals also place the front-door manual release in front of the window switches. Pull up the release to open the front door without power. Tesla’s manual cautions against using the manual release while moving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEven where the front-release location is similar, the rear-door process is markedly different. The cited Model S rear procedure involves a cable beneath the rear-seat carpet; the Model X Falcon Wing procedure involves the speaker grille and lifting the door after the latch releases. Do not use one as a substitute for the other.
Model S, 2012–2020
The older Model S manual describes different front-door behavior: use the interior handle as usual when there is no electrical power. This is an important generation-specific distinction. Do not search for or use a newer Model S release based only on instructions for a 2012–2020 vehicle, or vice versa; verify the vehicle’s own manual.
Rear-door releases are model- and configuration-specific
Model 3
The cited 2017–2023 Model 3 manual says only the front doors have a manual release. Do not interpret that statement as proof that every later Model 3 build has the same rear-door arrangement. Check the exact vehicle’s current manual, particularly because Tesla’s first-responder materials separate 2017–2023 Model 3 resources from 2024-and-newer materials.
If you are travelling with passengers, do not assume the front-door method can be repeated at the rear. The cited manual describes no manual rear release for its coverage. For a different year or build, consult that vehicle’s manual instead of relying on this older coverage or on an online description for another Model 3.

If that access panel or cable is absent, do not force trim or assume the vehicle has the same optional setup.

This is a configuration-dependent procedure: the access door and cable are part of the described release, not evidence that every Model Y has the same arrangement. The current Model Y manual and newer builds may have different details. Confirm the specific vehicle before relying on a rear-door instruction.
Model S
In the cited newer Model S manual, fold back the carpet edge below the rear seat to expose the mechanical release cable, then pull the cable toward the center of the vehicle. The 2012–2020 manual also describes a rear cable beneath the rear-seat carpet, but its instructions belong to that generation. Consult the matching manual for the exact access and action rather than treating the two procedures as identical.
Model X
For the Falcon Wing rear door in the cited Model X manual, carefully remove the speaker grille, pull the mechanical release cable down and toward the front of the vehicle, and manually lift the door after the latch releases. This is a specific procedure involving a particular door and trim access; it is not a general method for other Tesla rear doors. Do not force the door if it does not release.

Expect the window to behave differently without power
Tesla cautions in the cited manuals that the window may not automatically lower when a door is opened using a manual release without power. The normal powered door-opening sequence may rely on window movement, so an unpowered opening can risk contact with the glass or trim. Follow the vehicle-specific instructions, move deliberately, and do not assume the glass will drop out of the way. This caution applies to the cited Model 3, Model Y, newer Model S and Model X procedures; the cited Model S generations and configurations should still be checked individually.
The caution is particularly important because using a mechanical release does not restore electrical power or make the window operate normally. Tesla warns of possible window or trim damage in the cited Model 3 manual, and the other cited procedures likewise warn that the glass may not lower automatically. Do not treat that warning as a reason to force the glass, door or trim; use the prescribed release and seek help if the exit is obstructed.
What occupants should not try to do
- Do not use a manual door release while the vehicle is moving; Tesla expressly warns against it in the cited manuals.
- Do not use a rear-door procedure copied from a different model or generation. Rear mechanisms may be absent, optional, or accessed through different trim.
- Do not force a stuck or damaged door, pull at unrelated cables, or remove trim beyond the procedure in the matching owner manual.
- Do not attempt high-voltage shutdown or battery isolation as an occupant egress step. Tesla’s first-responder materials discuss those actions for trained responders during extraction.
- Do not infer that an energized vehicle is safe because it is quiet. Tesla warns that the powertrain can be energized without making noise.
- Do not assume that a release described for a particular model-year manual is present on every vehicle sold under the same model name. Verify both the generation and any configuration-specific note.
When a release is blocked or does not work
If the vehicle is involved in a serious accident, you are trapped, or the listed release is damaged or inaccessible, call local emergency services and follow their directions. The available Tesla accident and owner guidance does not provide a universal occupant technique for a jammed mechanism. First responders have model-specific Emergency Response Guides, Rescue Sheets and other materials, including guidance for safely de-energizing a vehicle when extraction requires it.

Do not attempt to carry out responder actions such as high-voltage isolation yourself. Tesla’s first-responder material is organized around trained rescue personnel and model-specific guides; it does not turn those procedures into a universal occupant escape method. After an accident, give responders the vehicle model if you know it and follow their instructions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the manual before an emergency
- Identify the vehicle’s exact model and model year or production generation; do not rely only on the badge or a generic search result.
- Open Tesla’s owner-manual index and select the manual matching that vehicle. The manual section is commonly titled “Opening Doors with No Power.”
- Read both front- and rear-door instructions. Confirm whether a rear manual release exists on that particular configuration and whether it requires an access panel or trim step.
- Note the window warning and keep the manual’s power-loss procedure separate from the ordinary powered door controls.
- For crash response or rescue context, use Tesla’s first-responder resource index as a reference for trained responders, not as an occupant guide to high-voltage isolation.
It is useful to do this while the vehicle is functioning normally, rather than trying to identify an unfamiliar control under stress. The manuals and release details can change by model and generation, so recheck them if you replace the vehicle or if the vehicle’s configuration differs from the instructions you previously learned. This is preparation, not a substitute for emergency services when a crash or blocked exit puts anyone in danger.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the emergency door release in my Tesla?
In the cited manuals for Model 3, Model Y, newer Model S and Model X, the front-door manual release is in front of the window switches. The cited 2012–2020 Model S manual instead says to use the interior handle as usual when there is no electrical power. Rear-door releases vary substantially, so check the owner manual for your exact model and generation.
Can I use the manual door release while the Tesla is moving?
No. Tesla explicitly warns in the cited manuals not to use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving.
Do all Tesla Model Y vehicles have a rear manual release?
No. The cited 2020–2024 Model Y manual describes an optional rear manual release and says not all vehicles have one. Where fitted, its procedure uses an access door at the bottom of the rear-door pocket and a mechanical cable. Check the exact vehicle’s manual; do not force trim if the access panel or cable is absent.

Will the window lower when I use a manual release without power?
It may not. Tesla cautions in the cited manuals that the window may not automatically lower when a door is opened using the no-power release. Follow the vehicle-specific instructions and do not assume the glass will move out of the way.
What should I do if a Tesla door is jammed after a crash?
Call local emergency services if it is an emergency and follow responders’ instructions. Tesla’s official guidance does not provide one universal occupant workaround for a blocked or damaged release. Do not force a door or attempt high-voltage isolation.
Does a quiet Tesla mean it is powered down after a crash?
No. Tesla notes that a vehicle can make no noise even when its powertrain is energized. Do not treat silence as proof that it is powered down.
Should occupants shut down the high-voltage battery to escape?
No. High-voltage shutdown and battery isolation are responder-facing procedures in Tesla’s first-responder materials, not occupant egress steps. In an emergency, contact local emergency services and follow their directions.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal Tesla escape procedure. Use the no-power instructions for the exact vehicle, remember that rear releases and window behavior differ, and never use a manual release while moving. After a crash, contact emergency services when needed, put the vehicle in Park as Tesla directs, and follow responders’ instructions rather than improvising with another model’s procedure.
