How to Get Around Without a Self-Driving Taxi

Self-driving taxis are only one way to travel. Learn how to compare transit, human-driven taxis, paratransit, on-demand services, and other local options for your trip.

You can make a trip without a self-driving taxi by combining fixed-route transit, a human-driven taxi or ride-hailing service, paratransit, local on-demand transit, shared rides, walking, or cycling. The right choice depends on whether a service reaches both ends of your trip, when it runs, what it costs, how you book it, and whether it meets your accessibility needs. Start by checking transit, then compare an on-demand car or an eligible accessible service; consider walking, cycling, or a shared ride when they suit the route.

What can you use instead of a self-driving taxi?

A self-driving taxi is one way to arrange a car trip, not a requirement for getting around. Depending on your location and journey, you may be able to travel by bus or rail, hail or book a human-driven taxi, use paratransit or demand-responsive transit, share a ride, or walk or cycle for some or all of the route.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There is no single nationwide list of available services or one mode that works for every journey. A transit system’s route map, operating hours, fares, accessible features, booking rules, and service area are local. The same is true of taxi and ride-hailing availability. Treat each option below as a possibility to check in your area, not a promise that it operates where you are.

How should you choose a way to travel?

Compare the complete trip, not just the vehicle or service name. A bus that reaches your destination but not your starting point may still be useful as one leg of a journey. A car service that appears in an app may not serve your area at the time you need it, and a listing alone does not confirm that an accessible vehicle will be available for a particular pickup.

What to check Question to answer before you rely on the option
Coverage Does the service reach both ends of the trip, or can you connect it to another mode?
Schedule or response time Is there a fixed departure time, or do you need to request a vehicle and wait?
Fare What is the fare for this trip, and do transfers, subsidies, or other rules affect what you pay?
Operating area and hours Does the service cover your origin and destination at the time you plan to travel?
Booking Can you board or request service directly, or do you need to reserve in advance? What information or method is required?
Accessibility Can you use the vehicle, stops, stations, and booking process with your mobility device or other access needs?
Sharing Is the trip private, or may it include other passengers and additional stops?

These checks are especially important when comparing demand-responsive services. The Federal Transit Administration identifies response time, fares, geographic area, hours and days, trip restrictions, information and reservations, and capacity as characteristics relevant to equivalent service. The agency’s guidance also says, “The ADA applies regardless of whether there is federal funding involved.” That statement concerns ADA obligations; it does not establish that every local provider offers the same service or booking options.

Use those characteristics as practical questions, not just policy terms. For example, a service that covers your neighborhood but stops running before your return trip may not solve the whole journey. A service with a reservation requirement may work for a planned appointment but not an unplanned trip. If you are comparing a transit agency’s service with a private-provider partnership, check the same essentials—where and when it runs, how you request it, what it costs, and whether it can accommodate your needs.

Should you check public transit first?

Start with local buses, rail, and other fixed-route services if they serve your trip. A fixed route and published schedule can give you a useful baseline for what is available, but you still need to check the particular route, departure time, fare, transfers, and stop or station access. Transit networks often combine more than one mode, so a trip may require a bus-to-rail connection or another local link rather than a single ride.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Look up both ends of the journey. Check the route map or trip-planning information for your starting point and destination, including any connection between modes.
  2. Check when the service runs. Confirm the day and time, not just the route name. A route may not operate at every hour you need.
  3. Review transfers, fares, and access. Find the applicable fare and transfer rules, and check whether the stops, stations, and vehicles work for your needs.
  4. Plan the first and last parts. If transit does not reach one endpoint directly, see whether a local shuttle, on-demand service, taxi, or another suitable option can cover that part.

Service details differ even between cities. For example, Houston METRO describes local bus and light-rail service and says shuttle buses may provide accessible connections when rail is not operating. That is a Houston-specific arrangement, not a general guarantee that another transit agency offers replacement shuttles. In New York City, the city’s AccessibleNYC 2025 report describes a network that includes subway, bus, commuter rail, paratransit, and ferry-related transportation. Those examples illustrate why it is worth checking the local network rather than assuming that “transit” means only one mode.

For a trip that starts or ends outside a station’s immediate area, ask whether the agency has a first- or last-mile option, such as an eligible shuttle or demand-responsive service. Some agencies work with private providers, but a partnership is not automatically available everywhere or for every trip. Confirm that the particular service covers your location and time, and check whether its rules allow the connection you have in mind.

When does a human-driven taxi or ride-hailing trip make sense?

A human-driven taxi or ride-hailing service can be a direct alternative when you need an on-demand car trip and a service operates in your area. It may also cover a first- or last-mile gap between transit and an endpoint. Before you depend on it, verify that you can request a trip for the places and time you need, whether the booking method works for you, and what fare or other trip rules apply.

Check accessibility separately from general availability. If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle or another accommodation, confirm that the provider can supply it for your specific trip and learn whether you must request it through a particular channel or ahead of time. Do not assume an ordinary vehicle listing or a general service area means the right vehicle is available when you need it.

New York City offers a local example of accessible taxi options. The NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities reported in its 2025 AccessibleNYC report that Accessible Dispatch provides on-demand wheelchair-accessible taxi service, with booking described by phone, 311, online, and app. The report recorded more than 66,000 completed Accessible Dispatch trips in 2024. It also reported an 11-minute accessible-taxi wait, down from 13 minutes in 2022. Those are figures for that NYC program and report, not a typical or guaranteed wait for taxis in other places.

The same 2025 report says that, as of June 5, 2025, more than half of New York City’s active yellow taxi fleet was wheelchair accessible—over 5,100 taxis. This gives a sense of the scale of one city’s accessible taxi supply; it is not a national figure or a promise that a particular taxi is immediately available. In New York City, the Taxi and Limousine Commission also lists accessible choices through licensed taxi, rideshare, and car services, but these local options and rules should not be assumed to exist elsewhere.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission says on its accessibility page that for-hire services must provide an accessible vehicle when requested and that the same service charges the same fare as a comparable non-accessible trip. Those statements are specific to NYC’s rules and services. Check the municipal taxi regulator and provider in your own area for applicable requirements, vehicle availability, and charges.

What if you need paratransit or another accessible service?

If you have a disability or access need that affects how you can travel, contact the local transit agency and its paratransit provider. Ask about eligibility, service area, fares, operating days and hours, how to reserve, how far ahead to book, trip restrictions, and whether the service can accommodate your mobility device or other requirements. These details determine whether a service is usable for a particular trip; the name “paratransit” alone does not tell you its local terms.

Demand-responsive transit may work differently from a fixed bus or rail route. It can require a reservation or a request for a vehicle, and its availability may depend on where you are travelling and when. The Federal Transit Administration’s ADA guidance lists response time, fares, area, hours and days, trip restrictions, information and reservations, and capacity among the factors for considering equivalent service. If a public transit system partners with a ridesourcing provider for demand-responsive transportation, the guidance says the public entity partnering with the provider is generally responsible for ensuring equivalent service to passengers with disabilities.

Confirm the practical details with the agency before making the trip depend on a service. Ask whether your requested pickup and drop-off are within its service area, what reservation lead time applies, and how to request an accessible vehicle or communicate an accommodation. If you are considering an on-demand provider rather than a transit agency, check directly with the provider and the local transit agency or municipal regulator as appropriate. Rules and arrangements in one city do not establish what applies elsewhere.

When judging whether an accessible option is workable, look beyond whether a vehicle type is mentioned on a website. Check that the vehicle can serve your particular pickup and destination, whether the request method is usable for you, and whether the service can meet your travel time. Capacity matters too: a program can exist locally while having limited availability at the time you need it. If any key detail is unclear, ask the agency or dispatcher before relying on the option, and consider a backup mode for the trip.

Local example: Houston METRO

Houston METRO says all its services are ADA accessible. Its information describes bus ramps or lifts, priority seating, wheelchair securement areas, accessible rail features, curb2curb vans, METROLift shared rides, and arrangements for accessible vanpool vehicles. The specific combination of features and service terms varies by mode, so check the route or service you plan to use rather than treating the agency-wide statement as a guarantee about every vehicle or trip detail.

Could local on-demand transit or a vanpool fill a gap?

Some transit agencies offer more than scheduled buses and trains. Depending on the community, you may find an on-demand van, a curb-to-curb service, a shuttle, a vanpool, or a partnership with a private provider. These options can help with a local connection, but their names, coverage, eligibility, booking rules, and hours are set locally.

Houston METRO, for example, describes curb2curb service in specific communities and vanpool options, including an accommodation process. That does not mean curb-to-curb transit or an accessible vanpool is available throughout Houston or in other cities. Check whether the particular program reaches your origin and destination, whether you can use it for your trip, how booking works, and what accommodation arrangements are offered.

The National Council on Disability has recommended continued support for transit and private-provider partnerships and microtransit. That recommendation does not establish that a local agency currently operates a particular service. Treat these as service types to investigate with your local transit agency, not as options you can assume are available.

Shared services can be useful, but ask what “shared” means for the specific program. It may involve other passengers or additional stops, so allow for the service’s schedule or response time rather than assuming it will operate like a private taxi. Check any trip restrictions and whether the service runs on the day and at the time you need. If an accommodation is required, ask how it is arranged and whether it applies to the trip you plan to take.

When are walking or cycling practical options?

Walking or cycling may work for a whole trip or a short connection to transit, a taxi, or another service. Whether either suits you depends on your route, circumstances, and access needs. Check the actual path and any local facilities or services that matter to you; there is no universal distance or safety rule that determines whether walking or cycling is suitable for everyone.

If a trip has more than one leg, evaluate each leg on its own. A short walk may connect a stop to your destination, while another traveler may need a different accessible connection. Do not choose a route solely because a map shows a nearby stop or a short distance: confirm that the relevant stops, paths, and connections work for the person making the trip.

How do you make a workable trip plan?

  1. Write down the trip you actually need. Include both endpoints, the day and time, and any constraints that matter, such as an appointment time or a mobility device.
  2. Check fixed-route transit. Look for buses, rail, or other local modes that serve the route and confirm schedules, transfers, fares, and access at the stops or stations.
  3. Identify any missing leg. If transit does not cover an endpoint or the time you need, check for a suitable taxi, ride-hailing trip, shuttle, on-demand transit service, or other local connection.
  4. Check the booking and wait requirements. Find out whether the option is scheduled, request-based, or advance-reservation only, and whether its response time fits your plans.
  5. Confirm access and vehicle details. If you need an accessible vehicle or accommodation, ask the service directly about availability for that specific trip and how to request it.
  6. Compare the full cost and sharing rules. Check fares and any transfer or subsidy terms that apply, and learn whether a ride is private or shared.
  7. Reconfirm changeable details before travelling. Routes, service hours, availability, booking rules, and fares are local operating details; use the agency or provider’s current information for your journey.

What should you verify locally?

No national or cross-mode price comparison is established here, so compare current fares and subsidy terms in your own area. The same caution applies to service coverage, hours, booking lead times, accessible vehicle availability, and travel-time or safety comparisons. A city’s program figures or service policies are useful only within their stated local context.

  • Transit agency: routes, schedules, fares, transfers, station and stop access, paratransit eligibility, service area, and reservations.
  • Municipal taxi regulator: local taxi and for-hire rules, including any accessibility requirements.
  • Provider or dispatch service: operating area, booking channels, expected response, vehicle availability, trip cost, and whether rides are shared.
  • On-demand program: participating neighborhoods, hours, eligibility, reservation method, accessibility process, and any links to fixed-route transit.

Using more than one mode is often a reasonable way to think about a trip: transit can handle a longer leg while a local car or on-demand option covers a gap. But which combination is possible depends on the particular route and services. A local check is the difference between a plausible itinerary and one you can rely on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for demand-responsive service?

The Federal Transit Administration identifies response time, fares, geographic area, hours and days, trip restrictions, information and reservations, and capacity as factors to consider for equivalent service. Check the local provider’s terms for each of these, along with vehicle access and the booking process, before relying on a trip.

If a transit system partners with a ride-sourcing entity for first-mile or last-mile service, what ADA rules apply?

The Federal Transit Administration says that when a public transit system partners with a ridesourcing provider for demand-responsive transportation, service to passengers with disabilities must be equivalent. The public entity partnering with the provider is generally responsible for ensuring that equivalent service. Ask the local agency how the partnership works and how to request the service.

How can I tell whether an accessible taxi or ride-hailing vehicle will be available for my trip?

Check with the local taxi regulator, dispatch service, or provider—not only an app listing. Ask whether an accessible vehicle can serve your pickup and destination, whether you must use a particular booking channel or reserve ahead, and what the fare and expected response time are. Availability and requirements vary by location.

Is paratransit available to anyone who needs a ride?

Eligibility, service area, fares, hours, reservation windows, and trip restrictions are set locally. Contact your transit agency or paratransit provider to learn whether you qualify and whether the service can cover the specific trip you have planned.

The Bottom Line

You do not need a self-driving taxi to make a trip. Check fixed-route transit first, then look for a human-driven taxi, ride-hailing service, paratransit, or local on-demand option to fill any gaps. Compare both endpoints, hours, response time, fare, booking rules, sharing, and accessibility—and confirm local details directly before depending on a service.
