Confirm who can authorize its release, which documents and payments are required, whether it can be driven away, and whether an evidence, court, or other hold blocks pickup. Rules, fees, and deadlines vary by location and by the reason for the tow, so get the instructions for your specific vehicle before you go.
1. Find the vehicle and confirm who can release it
Check the tow notice for the impounding agency and lot, then call to verify the car is there and ask whether police authorization is still required. The lot can explain its pickup process, but a police agency or court may need to approve release separately.

2. Get the local document checklist
Before traveling to the lot, ask what it accepts to establish your identity and your right to the vehicle. Possible ownership records include a title, current registration, bill of sale, or lease agreement, but these are examples—not a universal checklist. Columbus requires identity and proof of ownership, while Saint Paul lists identity and title, bill of sale, or lease evidence: Columbus Police impounded vehicles and Saint Paul impounded vehicles.

If the vehicle is rented, leased, or owned by a business, ask whether the registered owner or a representative must collect it and what authority the lot accepts.
3. Arrange pickup by someone other than the owner, if needed
Do not assume a phone call or informal note is enough to let another person collect the car. Local rules may require a signed statement naming the representative, a notarized letter accompanied by the owner’s identification, or a power of attorney. Saint Paul and Cincinnati specify notarized authorization in some representative situations; Utah DMV describes a signed statement naming the representative. Confirm the exact form with the agency or lot before sending anyone.

4. Decide whether the car can be driven out
Ask whether the vehicle may be driven from the lot or must be towed. Requirements can include a valid driver’s license, current insurance, current registration, or a licensed driver who can take the car away. Columbus says an owner presenting government photo ID must have a licensed driver drive the vehicle away or have it towed. Saint Paul requires proof of current insurance and a valid license to drive from the lot. Sacramento describes additional requirements for certain impounds.
- If you are not licensed, ask whether a licensed driver can collect and drive the vehicle or whether a tow is required.
- If insurance or registration has lapsed, ask the lot what it will accept and whether towing is the only option.
- Do not drive the car until the lot confirms that it is legally eligible to leave and the person driving meets its requirements.
5. Confirm the amount due and how to pay
Request the current total and a breakdown before you go. Ask about towing, storage, release or administrative charges, whether storage continues to accrue, and which payment methods the lot accepts. Published charges in another city are not a reliable estimate for your lot; amounts and payment rules are local and can change.

6. If you want to challenge the tow, check the notice immediately
Ask whether a hearing or other review is available, who must receive the request, what deadline applies, and whether payment is required before or after review. Follow the notice for your vehicle rather than relying on a deadline from another city. As local examples, LAPD says its hearing request must be made within ten days of the notice date, while Saint Paul says an unclaimed vehicle may be sold at auction after 15 days of notice.
A tow hearing is not necessarily a way to contest a traffic citation or criminal case. LAPD says, “This hearing does not affect any related traffic citation or other criminal proceedings,” and directs people challenging those matters to the appropriate court: LAPD impounded vehicles.

7. Treat a hold as a separate release step
Paying the tow and storage bill may not be enough if police, a court, or another authority has placed a hold on the vehicle. Ask who imposed the hold, what approval is needed to remove it, and how the lot will be notified once release is authorized. Get the approval process and any required paperwork from the responsible agency; the lot cannot necessarily override a hold.

- Confirm the vehicle’s location, release status, and any separate police or court authorization.
- Bring the identity and ownership documents the local agency specifically accepts.
- If someone else is collecting the car, obtain the required written authority in advance.
- Arrange a licensed driver or tow, and confirm insurance or registration requirements.
- Verify the current charges, payment method, opening hours, and any hearing deadline directly with the agency or lot.
