For most buyers, no: don’t delay an EV purchase solely for solid-state batteries. Automakers have announced targets, but those are not guaranteed showroom dates or promises of broad availability. If a current EV meets your needs for range, charging, price and timing, it is reasonable to compare the cars available now. Waiting makes more sense if today’s options fall short and you can defer the purchase while launch and production plans remain uncertain.
When might solid-state battery EVs arrive?
Roadmaps describe company goals, not a market-wide delivery date. The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports Toyota’s plan for its first all-solid-state-battery EV by 2028. It reports BYD’s plan to sell its first EV using all-solid-state batteries from 2027, with mass production from 2030. These are different milestones and company plans; neither establishes when a suitable model will be available in your market.

Toyota and Idemitsu said in 2023 that they aimed for commercialization in 2027–28, followed by full-scale mass production. That corporate target is not a guarantee of broad availability across vehicle types or regions. Check for updated announcements before making a decision around any projected date.
Meanwhile, EV development is not standing still while solid-state batteries scale up. Toyota’s 2023 roadmap also set out plans for improvements to liquid lithium-ion and other next-generation batteries. A future EV may improve without using an all-solid-state pack.

What could solid-state batteries change—and what is still unknown?
“Solid-state” covers different battery designs and chemistries. These approaches use a solid electrolyte for some or all of the functions served by a liquid electrolyte in conventional lithium-ion cells. Companies and researchers pursue potential gains in energy density, safety, charging performance and packaging, but the label alone does not specify what a production car will deliver.
The IEA describes solid-state batteries as a next-generation technology being advanced by several companies; the U.S. Department of Energy also discusses ongoing battery research in its battery research overview. The sources do not establish that a future retail model will achieve every proposed advantage at once, cost less than current EVs, or be made in enough volume for your market.
A cell result, prototype, partnership or production goal is not the same as a finished car you can buy. The steps from cell development to vehicle integration and large-scale manufacturing leave important questions about timing and real-world specifications. There is not a like-for-like retail comparison here between a solid-state production car and a current lithium-ion EV for price, range, charging and durability.

Today’s lithium-ion EVs are not merely a stopgap
Most current all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids use lithium-ion batteries, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Its EV battery explainer describes lithium-ion batteries as energy efficient and long lived. That does not mean every EV has the same range, charging curve or durability: performance depends on the specific vehicle and its battery system.
Battery-pack costs have also fallen substantially. The DOE estimated in 2024 that a light-duty EV lithium-ion pack cost $139 per usable kWh for 2023 production at a scale of at least 100,000 units a year, in 2023 constant dollars. The estimate was 90% below the comparable 2008 figure of $1,415 per usable kWh. These are modeled manufacturing costs for battery packs—not vehicle sticker prices or a guarantee that consumers receive an equivalent price reduction.

Start with the vehicles you can actually obtain, rather than a future chemistry’s potential. Compare specific models against your driving, charging access and budget.

- Range: Check whether the usable range suits ordinary driving and occasional longest trips, including your local weather and driving conditions.
- Charging: Consider access to home, workplace and public charging, and the time charging takes under realistic conditions—not only a best-case claim.
- Price and ownership costs: Compare current local offers, rules and ongoing costs for the specific vehicles you are considering.
- Practical availability: Check delivery timing, service support and warranty for the model in your region.
- Cost of waiting: Consider whether deferring the purchase creates a meaningful inconvenience or expense, and whether you can accept a launch schedule that may shift.
Buying now may make sense when an available EV fits your needs. Waiting may make sense when current models do not meet a specific requirement, you can defer without significant cost, and you are comfortable with uncertainty. Waiting gives you a chance to consider future models; it does not secure a particular range, charge time or price.

Do you need a home charger to buy an EV?
No. A Level 2 home charger can be useful if you have suitable parking and electrical service, but it is not necessary for every EV owner. Charging at home depends on your property and setup; equipment, permitting, utility work and installation conditions can affect total cost and timing. The U.S. Department of Energy’s EV charging guidance covers charging equipment and infrastructure. Check the requirements and costs for your home before treating a charger as part of the purchase decision.
