NHRA’s 2026 Northwest Nationals plan illustrates a conventional pattern: two qualifying sessions on Friday, two more on Saturday, and eliminations on Sunday. That is an example, not a rule. A major event can use a different format. The U.S. Nationals preview, for example, schedules qualifying over multiple days before Monday eliminations.
When reading a qualifying result, separate three ideas:
- Field position: the driver’s place in the qualified elimination field.
- Session performance: the elapsed-time result that can make one run the session’s low time.
- Championship value: qualifying position and session performance can contribute points under the 2026 NHRA event guide.
A driver therefore has two reasons to watch qualifying. It determines whether the car races on elimination day, and it can affect the championship standings before the first head-to-head round begins.

Elimination rounds

- Open the official NHRA event schedule. Locate the race and record every listed qualifying session and elimination round. Treat the posted local time as the starting point for your planning.
- Identify the event’s time zone. Convert the local start time to your own zone and account for daylight-saving differences. Keep the original local time beside your conversion so you can cross-check later updates.

The championship picture requires more context: qualifying points, session-performance points and elimination points all contribute under the season’s guide. A driver who exits early can still have earned qualifying points, while a race winner’s championship gain depends on the complete points structure.

Check the final standings after the event
Once the final is complete, compare the official event result with the updated NHRA standings. This is especially important near the end of the season, when the separate Pomona points structure applies.
Why qualifying affects the championship
It is easy to treat qualifying as a preliminary show before the real race. Under the 2026 NHRA event guide, that is incomplete. The guide awards points for qualifying position and for low elapsed time in a session, in addition to points earned through elimination-round results.
This creates three separate championship questions for each event:
- Did the driver qualify for the elimination field?

They demonstrate why a repeated weekly assumption fails. Session count, day of the week and broadcast window can all change. Use the named event’s current schedule even if the previous race followed a familiar pattern.

Motorsport schedules can move because of weather, track operations or other event conditions. The safest routine is to keep the official schedule and event preview open until the session begins, then refresh the event listing if the advertised start passes without a run.
- If a television window is missing: check the event preview for a different FOX or FS1 slot or an app listing.
- If a qualifying session is not visible on a broadcast: check NHRA.TV, which NHRA event coverage identifies as carrying every professional qualifying round live.
- If the session time conflicts with your local conversion: return to the event’s stated local time and recalculate rather than relying on an old calendar reminder.
- If results appear inconsistent: wait for the official session or round result, since provisional graphics can change before the result is finalized.

Using an old reminder after a schedule change
Event-specific times can change. Keep the official schedule and preview as your final reference, particularly on qualifying days.
How to follow the championship beyond one race
A single weekend produces three useful records: the qualifying order, the elimination result and the points movement. Keep them together rather than judging the championship from the final-round result alone.
- After the last qualifying session, record each driver’s position and any session-performance point noted in the official results.
- After each elimination round, mark the advancing driver and the round reached by every competitor.
- After the final, compare the event result with the updated standings.
