Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Most Subaru Outback Apple CarPlay and Android Auto failures are caused by a charging-only or damaged USB cable, the wrong USB port, disabled phone settings, or a pairing record that needs to be cleared. A display that is completely frozen is a different fault: Subaru does not publish one reset sequence that applies to every Outback year and multimedia unit. Start by identifying whether only phone projection has failed or the entire head unit has stopped responding, then use the model-year-specific manual and software guidance.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
The fix depends on what has actually failed. A phone-projection problem can leave the vehicle radio and menus usable, while a head-unit freeze affects the display itself. Use this distinction to choose the right path.

| What you see | Most useful first check | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| CarPlay or Android Auto will not start, but vehicle menus work | Confirm phone compatibility, projection settings, the correct USB port or wireless pairing, and the cable. | It does not prove the screen or head unit has failed. |
| The phone charges but projection never appears | Try a data-capable cable in the designated data port, connected directly without a hub. | Charging alone does not show that the cable can carry projection data. |
| Screen flickers or audio becomes noisy during a connection | Inspect and replace the USB cable, then check whether the phone is recognized by another system. | These symptoms alone do not establish a failed head unit. |
| The entire display is frozen and does not respond to menus | Identify the model year and multimedia unit, then use its owner manual or Subaru support path. | A phone-side reset or a procedure from another Outback year may be inappropriate. |
Checks to make before troubleshooting
- Note the Outback model year, trim, and whether the vehicle has a mid-level or navigation multimedia unit. Subaru instructions are not interchangeable across all years and head units.
- Determine whether the connection is wired or wireless. A wired failure calls for a port and cable inspection; a wireless failure also depends on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- Make sure the phone supports the projection system and that its operating system, relevant apps, and permissions are current enough for the feature.
- Park safely before changing settings. Do not handle the phone while driving.
- If the display is completely unresponsive, do not start by applying an Internet button combination unless it is documented for that exact vehicle and unit.
Fix a wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connection
1. Confirm the phone and vehicle are enabled for projection
On the phone, verify that Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is enabled and that the phone is allowed to connect to the Outback. The vehicle must also have that phone enabled for the intended projection feature. If either side is disabled, changing the cable will not create a connection.
2. Use the correct USB port
Connect directly to the Outback USB port intended for smartphone integration. Do not use a USB hub, splitter, or an outlet intended only for charging. A charging-only cable or charging-only port can supply power while carrying no data; Subaru’s multimedia manual states that the smartphone-linking function cannot be used with a charging-only USB cable.

3. Reseat the connection and inspect for damage
- Unplug the cable from both the phone and the vehicle.
- Check the connectors for bent contacts, looseness, dirt, or visible damage. Do not force a plug into the port.
- Reconnect firmly to the designated data port and wait for the phone prompt and vehicle projection option.
- If the connection previously worked and has stopped, test a known-good compatible data cable. Subaru specifically identifies cable replacement as a possible remedy.
4. Match the cable to the phone
| Phone | Subaru guidance | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Use an official Apple cable or an MFi-certified cable. | Try a cable known to support both charging and data, not one marketed only for charging. |
| Android | Use a high-quality data cable no longer than 1.8 metres (about 6 feet) and do not add an extension. | Replace long, thin, damaged, or extension-based cables before changing vehicle settings. |
Not every cable is supported, even when it fits the phone and supplies power. A cable that works with a computer or another vehicle is a useful comparison, but it still must meet the Outback’s connector and length requirements.
5. Recheck the phone prompt
Unlock the phone and accept any permission, trust, or projection prompt. If the vehicle offers more than one source, select Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on the vehicle screen rather than assuming it will launch automatically.
Fix a wireless CarPlay or Android Auto connection
Wireless projection needs more than a charged phone. The phone must be able to pair over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi must be available and enabled, and the Outback must have that phone enabled for the intended projection feature.

- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Confirm that the phone is visible to the vehicle’s Bluetooth pairing process and complete the pairing prompts.
- Check the Outback’s connected-device or smartphone settings and enable the phone for CarPlay or Android Auto.
- If several old phones are listed, remove obsolete entries and pair the intended phone again.
- Keep the phone unlocked during the first connection so that permission prompts are visible.
Subaru’s Wi-Fi capability information describes a vehicle Wi-Fi feature, but a Wi-Fi subscription is not a remedy for a failed Apple CarPlay or Android Auto projection connection. Wireless phone projection and an in-vehicle Wi-Fi service are separate functions.
Model-specific steps for 2020–2022 Outback and Legacy
The following procedures come from Subaru support instructions scoped to 2020–2022 Outback and Legacy vehicles. Do not assume that the same menu names or behavior apply to a different model year or multimedia unit.
Android Auto will not launch
- Open Android Auto settings on the phone.
- Go to Connected cars.
- Choose the option to forget all connected cars.
- Reconnect the phone to the Outback and complete the pairing and permission prompts.
- If Android Auto still will not launch, reinstall the Android Auto app, then retry the connection.
For a 2020–2022 vehicle, this phone-side cleanup is a more appropriate first step than applying a reset sequence intended for another Subaru head unit.

Apple CarPlay will not launch

- Connect with an Apple or MFi-certified data cable if using a wired connection.
- Accept the CarPlay permission prompt on the iPhone.
- Select CarPlay on the Outback screen if it does not open automatically.
- Install available updates for the iPhone and relevant apps, then test again.
These instructions address projection startup. They do not establish a fix for a screen that remains frozen even when no phone is connected.

When the screen flickers or audio becomes noisy
Subaru’s multimedia troubleshooting table directs owners to treat flicker and noisy audio during a connection as a possible USB or phone-recognition issue.
- Disconnect the USB cable and inspect it for cuts, crushed sections, loose ends, or bent connectors.
- Reconnect with a different known-good data cable that matches the phone guidance above.
- Check whether the phone is recognized by another compatible system. If it is not recognized elsewhere, investigate the phone or cable before blaming the Outback.
- Remove hubs, extensions, and other intermediate adapters.
- Test the vehicle with the phone disconnected. If the display and audio are normal without the phone, the projection path remains the leading area to investigate.
A cable test can isolate the connection path, but it cannot prove that the head unit is healthy or defective by itself. Persistent symptoms with multiple compatible cables and phones warrant model-specific vehicle support.

What to do when the entire infotainment display is frozen
Do not use an unverified universal reset
The available Subaru manuals and support pages do not specify one screen-freeze button sequence for every Outback year and head-unit generation. A long press or key combination copied from another year may do nothing or may invoke a different function. Do not present a phone reconnection step as a cure for a display that is frozen independently of phone projection.
Identify the exact vehicle and unit
- Record the model year and trim.
- Determine whether the vehicle has the mid-level or navigation multimedia unit, if that information is available in the owner materials.
- Note whether the freeze occurs at startup, after connecting a phone, during audio playback, or even with every USB device disconnected.
- Use Subaru’s vehicle resource page to select the owner manual and technology information for that year and unit.
This information determines whether a documented software update or a unit-specific recovery procedure exists. It also prevents applying an otherwise valid instruction to incompatible hardware.

Software updates: use only the guide for your Outback
Subaru’s 2019–2021 support material covers over-the-air updates for applicable mid-level and navigation head units. It instructs owners to choose the guide matching their vehicle. That scope does not make the procedure universal, and an update is not a guarantee that every freeze or connection problem will be corrected.
Safety requirements in the V7 February 2021 guide
The Subaru STARLINK software update guide identified as V7 (February 2021) applies only to specified 2019–2021 models. Where that guide applies, Subaru says to:
- Perform the update outdoors or in another place where the engine can run safely.
- Never let the engine idle in a closed garage or other enclosed space.
- Secure the vehicle in Park or Neutral as applicable and engage the parking brake.
- Unplug USB devices before starting the update.
- Follow the guide’s vehicle and head-unit selection rather than substituting instructions from another year.
Do not begin an update merely because the screen froze once, and do not use the 2019–2021 procedure on a different year unless that vehicle’s own Subaru guide says it applies. If the update menu is inaccessible because the display is frozen, obtain model-specific support rather than improvising.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Wired versus wireless: choose the right troubleshooting path
| Connection type | Advantages | Additional failure points | Best first test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired | Direct connection and phone charging through the cable. | Wrong port, charging-only cable, damaged cable, hub, extension, or excessive cable length. | Use the designated data port and a short, compatible data cable. |
| Wireless | No cable to wear or misplace after pairing. | Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi availability, phone permissions, and vehicle device authorization. | Recheck Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, then remove and re-pair the intended phone. |
Neither method is a substitute for diagnosing a display that is frozen with no phone connected. Projection troubleshooting and head-unit troubleshooting overlap only when the symptom appears exclusively during phone use.
A practical decision sequence
- Is the whole display unresponsive? If yes, stop treating it as a simple CarPlay or Android Auto problem. Identify the year and head unit, consult the matching manual, and use Subaru service support if it persists.
- Do vehicle menus work but projection does not? Check phone compatibility and authorization, then follow the wired or wireless branch.
- Is the connection wired? Use the correct data port, remove hubs and extensions, inspect the cable, and test a compatible replacement.
- Is the connection wireless? Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, verify pairing, and ensure the Outback has the phone enabled for the intended projection system.
- Is the vehicle a 2020–2022 Outback or Legacy? For Android Auto, forget all connected cars and reinstall the app if necessary. For Apple CarPlay, enable Siri, use an MFi-certified cable for wired use, accept the prompt, select CarPlay, and update the phone and relevant apps.
- Does flicker or noisy audio remain? Repeat the cable and phone-recognition checks with a known-good setup. If the symptom follows the vehicle across compatible phones and cables, seek model-specific service.
- Is an update being considered? Select the guide for the exact year and head unit and follow its safety requirements; never substitute a procedure from another model.
How to choose a replacement cable
A replacement cable is a reasonable accessory purchase when a wired connection fails, but match it to all three parts of the system: the phone connector, the Outback’s data-port connector, and Subaru’s cable guidance.
- Confirm whether the phone uses Lightning, USB-C, or another connector and buy the matching data-capable cable.
- For iPhone, follow Apple’s official or MFi-certified cable guidance.
- For Android, stay at or below 1.8 metres and avoid an extension.
- Check that the cable supports data transfer, not only charging.
- Do not assume a particular cable brand is Subaru-approved; compatibility depends on the phone, cable construction, port, and head unit.
Preventing repeat connection failures
- Route the cable so it is not sharply bent or pulled when the phone is placed in a holder.
- Keep debris out of the phone and vehicle connectors and avoid forcing a plug.
- Remove unused paired phones when wireless discovery becomes confusing.
- Keep the phone operating system and relevant projection apps updated, especially when Subaru’s model-specific instructions call for it.
- Before a vehicle software update, disconnect USB devices and follow the exact safety instructions for the applicable guide.
- Save the Outback’s model year, trim, and head-unit information with the owner’s manual so the correct support page can be found quickly.
When professional service is the sensible next step
Arrange model-specific Subaru service when the display freezes without a connected phone, the problem survives multiple compatible cables and phones, the backup-camera or other vehicle functions are affected, or the applicable update cannot be completed. Provide the technician with the model year, multimedia-unit type, whether the symptom is wired or wireless, the exact point at which it occurs, and which documented steps have already been tried. This avoids replacing a cable when the symptom is a system-level freeze and avoids treating a head-unit fault as a phone-pairing problem.
