Google built-in runs apps on the vehicle’s infotainment system, so it needs the vehicle data plan, Wi‑Fi, or a supported phone hotspot. Android Auto is a separate phone-to-screen system and has different fixes.
Park before changing settings. Confirm which system you are using, check the car’s network status and service coverage, then follow the symptom-specific steps below. Menu names and available connections differ by automaker, model, region, and data plan.

What “Google built-in” means—and why the distinction matters
Google built-in (also called Android Automotive OS with Google apps in some vehicle documentation) places Google Maps, the Play Store, and Assistant or Gemini in the car itself. The vehicle’s infotainment computer connects directly to the internet. Your phone may be paired for calls or media, but the built-in apps do not normally depend on Android Auto being active.
Android Auto is different: it projects compatible phone apps onto a compatible car display. If the problem is Android Auto, USB-cable quality, Bluetooth pairing, phone permissions, and receiver compatibility may be relevant. Those checks will not restore an offline Google built-in system. Identify the system before replacing a cable, resetting your phone, or buying an adapter.

- Built-in symptom: Maps, Play Store, or Assistant/Gemini on the car’s home screen reports “offline,” cannot refresh, or cannot download an app even when no phone projection is running.
- Android Auto symptom: the phone will not connect to the car display, the Android Auto icon does not appear, or phone apps disappear when projection fails.
Google notes that “Settings and functionality may vary by car manufacturer, region, and data plan.” Treat the labels in this guide as functional descriptions; use your owner’s manual when your vehicle uses different names.
Before troubleshooting: park and establish the exact failure
Setup, account, and network changes should be made while the vehicle is safely parked and in Park. Do not operate the infotainment controls while driving. Record what you see before changing anything: an “offline” banner, a spinning map, an app-download error, or an Assistant/Gemini message that a feature is unavailable.
- Turn the vehicle on and wait for the infotainment system to finish starting.
- Confirm whether the failing app is installed in the car or being projected from a phone.
- Test more than one built-in function, such as opening Maps and the Play Store. If all online functions fail, troubleshoot connectivity first; do not treat each app as a separate fault.
- Note your location. A dead cellular area can make a healthy vehicle appear broken.
Check the car’s internet connection first
Online Maps search, live traffic, Play Store downloads, and many Assistant/Gemini features require an internet path. Depending on the vehicle, that path can be a built-in mobile-data plan, Wi‑Fi, or a supported phone hotspot. No single option works on every model, and a connection icon alone does not prove that the car can reach Google’s services.
| Connection source | What to verify | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle mobile-data plan | The plan is active, the vehicle is signed in or provisioned as required, and the car has cellular coverage. | Plan availability, included services, and renewal rules vary by automaker and region. |
| Wi‑Fi | Wi‑Fi is enabled, the car is connected to the intended network, and that network has working internet access. | The car may lose service when it leaves the network’s range or when the network requires a sign-in page it cannot display. |
| Supported phone hotspot | Hotspot is enabled on the phone, the password is correct, and the vehicle supports that hotspot method. | Hotspot support is vehicle-specific; phone battery, carrier limits, and mobile coverage still apply. |
Use the vehicle’s network settings
- While parked, open the infotainment Settings menu.
- Open the section labeled Network, Connectivity, Internet, or a similar term.
- Check both Wi‑Fi and Mobile data. If your vehicle provides a data-plan status page, confirm that service is active rather than merely enabled.
- If a Wi‑Fi network is listed as connected, open a built-in online service to test it. A saved network can still be offline.
- Turn the active network option off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on. Reconnect to Wi‑Fi or re-enter the hotspot password if prompted.
If the car has no service in the current area, drive only when safe and try again in a location with known coverage. Google’s guidance specifically allows trying again elsewhere when service is unavailable. Do not assume an app update or account reset can overcome a missing data signal.
Follow the path for the symptom you actually have
Google Maps will not load or shows no live information
First confirm the network steps above. Online Maps needs connectivity for address searches, newly requested routes, business details, and live traffic. If the car is offline, Maps may still navigate with a map area that was downloaded earlier, but it cannot supply real-time traffic while offline.

- Open Maps and check whether the map area is already visible rather than an empty grid.
- Try a simple destination that was not recently searched. A successful search indicates that the car has regained online access.
- If only traffic is missing while roads and saved map data appear, treat it as an offline limitation, not proof that the entire navigation system is broken.
- After restoring a connection, update saved map areas so they do not become stale.
Google says downloaded offline maps expire one year after download unless they are updated. Expiration is a product rule, not a guarantee that every vehicle displays the same warning. Reconnect the car and update the map before relying on it for a trip.
Play Store will not download or update a car app
App downloads require internet access. Once the network test succeeds, use Google’s documented order of operations. Complete each step while parked and test the Play Store before moving to the next.
- Confirm connectivity: verify Wi‑Fi or mobile data in the car’s network settings and open another online built-in service.
- Clear Play Store cache and data: open the car’s Settings, find Apps or Applications, select Google Play Store, open Storage (the label may differ), and choose the controls to clear its cache and data. Clearing data can remove local Play Store state, so sign-in or download preferences may need to be restored.
- Sign out and back in: in the vehicle’s Google account controls, sign out of the account used by the built-in system and sign in again. Google warns that signing out removes downloaded apps; plan to reinstall them afterward.
- Check for a vehicle system update: open the vehicle’s system or software-update menu and install an offered update according to the maker’s instructions. Keep the car parked and powered as required by the vehicle.
- Restart the vehicle: if the preceding steps do not work, turn the engine or vehicle system off and on, then retry the download.
A download that remains stuck after a confirmed connection, Play Store reset, account sign-in, and system-update check is a vehicle-specific support case. Save the exact error text, app name, vehicle model and model year, and the software version for the automaker or authorized service channel.
Assistant or Gemini does not respond
Voice features have more prerequisites than a map display. Verify that the assistant is set up in the car and that the intended Google account is signed in. Many requests require internet access, and an app can respond to voice only when it supports Assistant or Gemini integration.

- Account: open the built-in assistant settings and confirm that the expected Google account is active.
- Connection: test the car’s network again. A voice request that needs cloud processing will fail when the car is offline.
- Supported integration: a third-party app must expose Assistant/Gemini support. Installing an app does not automatically make every function voice-controllable.
- Calls and texts: these can additionally require Bluetooth pairing between the car and phone.
- Message notifications: notification access may be required before the assistant can read or announce messages.
If the assistant hears the wake phrase but says a feature is unavailable, the problem may be the feature’s account, Bluetooth, notification permission, app integration, or network requirement rather than the microphone itself. Test a basic built-in request after reconnecting the car, then investigate the extra prerequisite named by the failed feature.
Every built-in Google app appears offline
When Maps, Play Store, and Assistant/Gemini fail together, start at the vehicle level. Check the network source, coverage, and data-plan status before clearing individual app data. Toggle Wi‑Fi or mobile data, reconnect the network, and try again in an area with service.

If the car still reports offline despite an active supported connection and good local coverage, check for a vehicle system update and consult the owner’s manual. The automaker controls model-specific connectivity hardware, menu labels, and data-plan behavior. Google’s general instructions cannot substitute for a procedure written for your exact make, model, year, and region.
Offline Maps: what still works and what does not
Offline navigation is a fallback, not a replacement for a live connection. It works only for map areas downloaded while the car was online and only while those downloads remain valid.

| Function | When the car is offline |
|---|---|
| Navigation within a saved map area | May continue to work if the map was downloaded earlier and has not expired. |
| Live traffic | Unavailable offline. |
| Searching for newly requested places or downloading a new area | Requires an internet connection. |
| Map validity | Google states that downloaded maps expire one year after download unless updated. |
Before a trip through weak coverage, connect the car, download the areas you need, and update older downloads. Do not wait for an offline error at the roadside: the car cannot download a missing map without a connection.
Account, Bluetooth, and notification checks
Connectivity and identity are separate layers. A car can be online while a Google account is signed out, or an account can be correct while Bluetooth permissions block calls and messages.
- Use the account-management screen in the built-in system to verify the signed-in account.
- For calls or messaging, open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and confirm that the car is paired and permitted for the relevant services.
- For message announcements, verify notification access on the phone and any corresponding vehicle permission.
- If only one third-party app fails, check that app’s own sign-in and whether it supports Assistant/Gemini commands; do not reset all built-in apps immediately.
Signing out of the vehicle account can remove downloaded apps, so use it as a deliberate Play Store recovery step rather than a first response to a single voice-command failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a restart or update is appropriate
A restart is useful after network changes, Play Store data clearing, account sign-in, or a completed software update. It is not a substitute for coverage or an active data plan. Follow the vehicle maker’s power-down instructions; some systems need the car locked and fully off before the infotainment computer resets.

Install a vehicle system update when the car offers one or when Google’s app-download troubleshooting directs you to check for it. Keep the vehicle stationary, maintain the required power state, and do not interrupt an update. If menus differ from the instructions, use the owner’s manual rather than guessing at a factory reset.
What not to buy or change first
- Do not start with a USB cable: a cable can matter for Android Auto, but it is not a general fix for Google built-in’s own internet connection.
- Do not assume an adapter is required: Google built-in connectivity may use the vehicle plan, Wi‑Fi, or a supported hotspot already available to you.
- Do not factory-reset the infotainment system as an early step: account data, downloaded apps, and personal settings may be lost, and a reset cannot create cellular coverage.
- Do not keep retrying downloads in a dead zone: move to a location with service or connect the car to working Wi‑Fi.
A compact decision tree
- Is the app built into the car? If no, troubleshoot Android Auto and the phone-to-car connection. If yes, continue.
- Does more than one built-in Google feature fail? If yes, inspect the car’s network, plan, Wi‑Fi or hotspot, and local coverage. If no, use the symptom-specific section.
- Is the car online now? Toggle the network, reconnect, and test again. If coverage is absent, retry elsewhere.
- Is the symptom a Play Store download? Clear Play Store cache/data, sign in again if needed, check the vehicle update, and restart.
- Is the symptom Maps? Use a previously downloaded map offline, but expect no live traffic; reconnect to search or update maps.
- Is the symptom Assistant/Gemini? Verify account setup, internet, Bluetooth for calls or texts, notification access for messages, and app integration.
- Does the vehicle remain offline after these checks? Gather the model, year, region, software version, connection type, coverage location, and exact error, then contact the automaker or its authorized service channel.
Information to give vehicle support
Model-specific support is faster when the report distinguishes a connectivity problem from an app problem. Provide:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Vehicle make, model, model year, and sales region.
- Whether the system is using a vehicle data plan, Wi‑Fi, or a phone hotspot.
- Whether the network screen says connected and whether other built-in online services work.
- The exact app, request, and on-screen error.
- Whether the failure occurs everywhere or only in one location.
- The infotainment software version and whether a system update is pending.
- For calls or messages, the phone model, Bluetooth pairing status, and notification-access status.
Google directs drivers to the vehicle maker for data-plan details and model-specific settings. That is especially important when the car shows a connection icon but online services remain unavailable, because the maker controls the embedded modem, plan provisioning, and vehicle menus.
Bottom line
Fix Google built-in in layers: identify the built-in system, restore the car’s own internet path, then address the individual app. Maps can fall back to valid downloaded areas but loses live traffic offline; Play Store downloads need a working connection and may require cache/data clearing, account sign-in, an update, and a restart; Assistant/Gemini also depends on account setup, supported app integration, and— for calls, messages, or notifications—Bluetooth and permissions. If the vehicle remains offline with coverage and a supported connection, the next step is model-specific manufacturer support, not a new cable.
