Do not buy parts first. Identify whether the vibration follows road speed or engine rpm, inspect every component moved during the swap, measure the operating angles at normal ride height, and then verify driveshaft runout, balance, phasing and U-joints. Miata alignment guidance targets working angles of roughly 0° to +3° that are closely matched, but the correct repair depends on the chassis generation, transmission, engine, mount geometry and shaft length.
Why did my Miata start vibrating after an engine swap?
An engine swap changes more than the engine. The replacement may sit at a different height or angle, use custom engine and transmission mounts, require a different PPF position, or place the transmission output and differential pinion on different centerlines. A driveshaft that was acceptable before the swap can then operate at an unfavorable angle, contact the transmission tunnel or exhaust, lose a balance weight, or become preloaded by altered mount hardware.

The swap can also expose a pre-existing fault. Worn U-joints, a bent tube, a damaged slip yoke, differential wear, wheel imbalance and transmission problems can all feel similar. Miata service and driveline material specifically treats loose attaching bolts, worn mounts, U-joints, bent or imbalanced shafts, and transmission or differential faults as competing causes. Changing angles without checking those items is therefore not a reliable universal fix.

The exact correction cannot be prescribed from the engine name alone. Record the Miata generation, engine and transmission, manual or automatic configuration, mount design, PPF arrangement, driveshaft specification and measured angles before ordering a shaft or modifying a mount.

First classify the vibration: road speed or engine rpm?
Make a short, controlled observation before lifting the car. Note the speed, gear and engine rpm at which the vibration starts; whether it is strongest under acceleration, steady throttle or coast; and whether it remains when you depress the clutch. This pattern narrows the search but is not conclusive by itself.
| Observed pattern | Most useful first suspects | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration rises with road speed and stays similar when you change gear at the same speed | Wheels, tires, wheel bearings, driveshaft, differential or driveline geometry | Inspect wheels and tires, then measure shaft runout and operating angles |
| Vibration follows engine rpm and changes when you select another gear at the same road speed | Engine, flywheel, clutch, engine mounts, transmission input components or an engine accessory | Repeat the observation with the clutch depressed and inspect the swap mounts and flywheel installation |
| Vibration is strongest only during acceleration | Loaded driveline angle, mount movement, differential bushings, U-joints or contact under torque | Look for movement, shiny contact marks and loose fasteners; then measure angles at rest and after a road test |
| Vibration is strongest on coast or deceleration | Opposing or excessive working angles, differential backlash, pinion support or a worn U-joint | Check signed angles, U-joint play and differential mounting |
| Vibration remains with the clutch depressed at the same road speed | Downstream driveline, wheels, tires, shaft or differential | Prioritize the rotating components between the transmission output and the tires |
Do not treat a single road test as proof. A damaged shaft can produce an rpm-like sensation, and a powertrain vibration can be transmitted through a shaft at a speed that makes the two symptoms overlap. Use the pattern to choose the next inspection rather than to condemn a part.
Make the car safe and gather the right measurements
Use a level surface for initial observations and a properly rated lift or axle stands on solid points for inspection. Chock the wheels, leave the transmission in neutral when rotating the shaft by hand, and never run the car in gear while it is supported insecurely. Keep hands, clothing and cables away from rotating parts. If you must inspect a running vehicle, use professional equipment and procedures rather than working beneath a spinning car on ordinary stands.
Useful equipment includes a flashlight, inspection mirror, torque wrench, paint marker, vernier caliper or tape measure, magnetic protractor or digital angle finder, dial indicator with a rigid mount, and the service information for the exact chassis and transmission. A driveline shop is better equipped for dynamic balancing, precision runout checks and U-joint replacement when the shaft is suspect.
Inspect everything the swap changed
Engine and transmission mounts
Check each mount, adapter plate and bracket for looseness, cracked welds, distorted holes, torn rubber and signs of metal-to-metal contact. Look for compressed or cocked isolators that indicate preload. Mazda troubleshooting guidance calls for checking loose attaching bolts and worn mounts, then readjusting or retightening the mount installation position when indicated. Follow the mount maker’s torque sequence and the chassis service information; do not simply tighten a mount while the powertrain is held in an unnatural position.

Power Plant Frame and differential supports
The Miata PPF ties the transmission and differential together, so a swap that changes transmission height or rear support position can alter both driveline angles. Inspect PPF fasteners, spacers, brackets and mounting faces for looseness, distortion, cracks or evidence that the frame is being forced into alignment. Check the differential bushings and front and rear supports for tearing, excessive movement and signs of the housing shifting under throttle. A loose differential can change the working angle while the car is accelerating even if a static measurement looks acceptable.
Exhaust, heat shields and tunnel clearance
Search the transmission tunnel, PPF, exhaust, heat shields and driveshaft for bright, freshly polished witness marks. Contact often appears only when the engine twists on its mounts, so inspect both sides of the shaft and the full exhaust route. Correct a displaced hanger or shield and repair the mount problem that allowed the movement. Do not create clearance by grinding structural parts or by forcing a shaft to run against a tunnel wall.

Compare the installed brackets with their intended orientation. A reversed spacer, an elongated hole, an incorrectly seated washer or a mount tightened before the powertrain was centered can introduce a permanent offset. Check that the PPF and differential fasteners are seated squarely and that no bolt is being used to pull a misaligned component into place. Recheck clearances after tightening because the powertrain can move as preload is released.
Is the driveshaft bent or out of balance?
Inspect the shaft before changing geometry. With the shaft safely removed, or with a dial indicator and secure access, check the tube for dents, kinks and corrosion damage. Look for missing balance weights and marks showing that a weight has recently detached. Measure runout at the tube and yokes with the indicator fixed to a rigid point; use the exact service limits for your shaft because a generic limit can be inappropriate. Excessive runout, a visibly bent tube or a missing weight calls for professional driveline service rather than improvised straightening.
Check U-joints for play and binding
Move each yoke through its complete range. A healthy joint should articulate smoothly without a notch at the normal operating position, tight spots, rust-colored dust, looseness or visible cap movement. Rotate the shaft back and forth while observing the joint and flange for lost motion. A joint can be worn without obvious looseness when unloaded, so a driveline shop should inspect suspicious joints under proper fixtures.

Verify phasing and slip-yoke seating
If the shaft has been separated, confirm that the yokes are phased correctly: the yoke ears at opposite ends must be in the orientation intended for that shaft. Incorrect phasing creates cyclic speed variation even when the tube is straight and balanced. Confirm that the slip yoke is fully and correctly seated in the transmission, that the flange or companion hardware matches the transmission and differential, and that fasteners are the specified type and torque. Do not rely on paint marks if the shaft was previously rebuilt or modified; verify the actual yoke relationship.
Separate shaft faults from wheel and differential faults
If runout, phasing and U-joints are acceptable, inspect tire uniformity, wheel balance, wheel bearings, differential mounts and differential condition. A road-speed vibration that remains after swap-specific checks is not evidence that the engine mounts are wrong. Diagnose the wheel, bearing, differential and transmission systems independently rather than repeatedly changing the shaft angle.
How do I set Miata driveline angles?
Measure the operating angles with the car at its normal ride height, not with the suspension hanging. Fuel load, exhaust position and ride-height changes can affect the result. Record the direction and sign of every reference, not just the absolute number.
Choose measurement surfaces
Use a magnetic protractor or digital angle finder on a reliable transmission-output reference, the driveshaft tube or yoke, and a differential pinion reference such as the flange or machined housing surface. Clean the surfaces and take repeated readings after zeroing the tool on a known level reference. If a surface is curved or inaccessible, use a straight, rigid adapter that does not flex and document how it was attached.
Calculate each working angle
Write the signed transmission angle, driveshaft angle and pinion angle in the same coordinate system. Calculate the transmission-to-driveshaft working angle as the difference between those two signed centerline angles. Calculate the driveshaft-to-pinion working angle the same way. The important values are the two joint working angles, not a single angle quoted from one component. Keep the sign because two angles that have the same numerical size but opposite directions can create a vibration.

Use the Miata target range
The Miata alignment guide attributed to Chris92 on the MX-5 Miata Forum in 2003 states that both the transmission-driveshaft and driveshaft-pinion angles should be between about 0° and +3°, and that they should be the same. Treat this as a practical setup range, not a substitute for the service information for your specific conversion. Aim for small, positive, closely matched working angles; avoid an arrangement in which one angle is positive and the other is negative.
| Measurement result | Interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Both working angles are approximately 0° to +3° and closely matched | Basic geometry is within the commonly cited Miata setup guidance | Continue checking balance, runout, phasing, U-joints and contact; acceptable angles do not prove the shaft is good |
| One angle is substantially larger than the other | Unequal joint articulation can produce cyclic speed variation and vibration | Reconsider mount height, PPF position or differential support, then retorque and remeasure |
| Angles are opposite in sign | The joint motions oppose the intended arrangement and can generate vibration | Correct the geometry without forcing components into contact or unsafe preload |
| One or both angles exceed roughly 3° | Operating angle is outside the practical range cited by the Miata guide | Review swap mount design, ride height, PPF alignment and differential position; verify clearance throughout suspension and torque movement |
Correcting a geometry mismatch without creating another problem
If the measurements confirm a geometry fault, revise the conversion hardware rather than bending or stressing the PPF. The appropriate correction may be a different engine or transmission mount, a controlled shim or support-position change, or a revised differential support. Make only changes that preserve mount contact area, fastener engagement, exhaust and tunnel clearance, suspension travel and the intended load path.
Support the powertrain before loosening a mount. Change one variable at a time, tighten the hardware in the specified sequence, and repeat the angle measurements at ride height. Rotate the shaft by hand through a full revolution and inspect for binding. Check clearance with the suspension loaded and unloaded where practical, then perform a short road test and measure again. A static setup can change when a soft mount deflects under acceleration; stiffer bushings can reduce movement but may transmit more normal powertrain vibration into the cabin, which is a trade-off for street and track use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to replace or rebuild the driveshaft
A bent, imbalanced or binding shaft should be repaired by a qualified driveline shop or replaced with a correctly dimensioned, dynamically balanced unit. A shop can check runout, press in serviceable U-joints, restore phasing, weld or replace damaged components and dynamically balance the completed assembly. Do not assume that replacing only a U-joint fixes a tube that has lost a balance weight or was damaged during removal.

Catalog coverage does not establish fitment for an engine-swapped car. Before ordering, confirm chassis generation, transmission model, manual versus automatic configuration, flange and slip-yoke details, installed mount geometry and the required shaft length. Measure the shaft that is actually in the car and compare the measurement method with the supplier’s specification. Inventory, current pricing and seller fitment can change, so verify the current catalog information at the time of purchase.
What if the vibration remains after the angle is corrected?
Vibration still follows road speed
Recheck shaft runout and balance, then inspect wheels, tires, wheel bearings, differential mounts and the differential itself. Confirm that the shaft is seated correctly and that no exhaust or tunnel contact appears only under load. If the shaft was rebuilt, request the balance report and ask the shop to verify phasing and flange runout.
Vibration still follows engine rpm
Inspect engine and transmission mounts, flywheel and clutch installation, pilot and release components, and engine accessories. Confirm that the replacement engine is not misfiring or running roughly. A mount that is too rigid, preloaded or damaged can transfer a normal engine pulse into the body even when the downstream angles are correct.
Vibration changes when you accelerate or coast
Look for differential movement, PPF fastener looseness, worn bushings and an angle that changes excessively as the powertrain torques over. Inspect for witness marks after both conditions. Measure again after the short road test rather than assuming the static readings represent the loaded arrangement.
Noise or vibration began immediately after shaft removal
Recheck flange hardware, cap seating, phasing, slip-yoke engagement and any marks used to preserve orientation. A joint cap that is not fully seated or a flange assembled with mismatched hardware can create immediate vibration and damage.
A practical decision sequence
- Record the speed, gear, rpm, throttle condition and clutch position when the vibration appears.
- Identify the exact chassis generation, engine, transmission, mount design and driveshaft currently installed.
- Secure the car and inspect mounts, PPF fasteners, differential bushings, swap brackets, exhaust routing and tunnel clearance.
- Inspect the shaft for dents, missing weights, runout, U-joint wear, binding, phasing errors and slip-yoke or flange problems.
- Measure the transmission, shaft and pinion references at normal ride height; calculate both signed working angles.
- Correct only the confirmed fault, preserving clearance, fastener loading and mount integrity.
- Retorque, remeasure, rotate the shaft by hand, perform a controlled road test and inspect again.
- Use a professional rebuild or a correctly dimensioned balanced replacement when the shaft itself is bent, imbalanced or worn.
This sequence prevents the most expensive mistake: changing the driveline angle to cure a vibration that is actually caused by a bent shaft, a loose mount, incorrect phasing or a wheel and tire fault.
