The “Active Air Dam System Fault See Manual” warning does not identify one failed part or one universal repair. The right fix depends on your F-150’s model year, whether it is a Lightning, stored diagnostic trouble codes, and whether the air dam is visibly damaged or failing to retract. Ford service guidance points to three possible paths: PCM software, actuator diagnosis, or replacement of broken fasteners.
What to do when the warning appears
Record the model year and whether the truck is an F-150 Lightning. Note whether the air dam is hanging, visibly damaged, or not retracting. Do not reach around components that may be powered or move unexpectedly.
Arrange for a qualified service provider to retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes, including whether C0604:00 is stored, and check current Ford service information for the truck’s VIN. Ask the technician to identify whether the evidence points to software, actuators, or damaged fasteners before authorizing parts replacement. Ford cautions in TSB 25-2155 that “The procedures should not be performed by ‘do-it-yourselfers’”; it says the procedures are intended for trained professional technicians with the appropriate knowledge, tools, and equipment.
Which repair path may apply?
Ford documents different remedies for different vehicles and symptoms. These communications are conditional guidance, not a diagnosis for every truck with the warning.

How to discuss the repair with a shop
- Provide the VIN, model year, and whether the truck is a Lightning.
- Describe when the warning appears and whether the air dam hangs, is damaged, or fails to retract.
- Ask for the stored codes and the diagnostic findings, especially whether C0604:00 is present.
- Ask which current Ford service communication applies and why it matches the truck’s year, code, and symptoms.
- Before approving a repair, ask whether the finding supports PCM programming, actuator replacement, or fastener repair.
