How to Find the Cheapest Public EV Charging Near You

The lowest advertised kWh rate is not always the cheapest charge. Use live availability and compatibility filters, compare operator and roaming tariffs, calculate every fee, and verify the final price immediately before charging.

By CarCody Team

The cheapest public EV charger is the one with the lowest complete cost for your car, payment method and stop—not necessarily the lowest advertised price per kilowatt-hour. Use a price-aware station map to find nearby options, filter for a compatible connector and live availability, then verify the tariff in the operator or payment app immediately before you start. Add every applicable energy, time, connection, idle, subscription and parking charge before choosing.

There is no permanent cheapest network. Public tariffs change by country, station owner, roaming provider, time of day and payment route, so a local, current comparison is more reliable than any nationwide ranking.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Why public EV charging prices are difficult to compare

A charger can quote a price by kilowatt-hour, minute, session, or a combination of these. Some sites add a connection fee, minimum charge, maximum-session charge, subscription requirement or an idle fee after the vehicle finishes. Parking may be billed separately by the site owner. The amount shown by the charger can also differ from the amount charged through a roaming app or RFID card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ChargePoint’s driver information says station owners or roaming partners set prices. It also warns that a third-party app can show a different tariff from the station’s own payment channel; in the ChargePoint app, the displayed app price is the amount billed for that session. Treat any map listing as a way to discover candidates, not as a guarantee of the final amount.

Availability and compatibility matter as much as price. A cheap connector that does not fit your vehicle, is occupied, is offline or requires a route detour can cost more in time and electricity than a slightly dearer usable charger.

The five-minute routine for finding the lowest usable price

  1. Open a station map or tariff-comparison service. Search around your destination and along the route, not just around your current location. Route planners are useful when a small detour avoids an expensive site.
  2. Filter for your vehicle and connector. Select the connector standard your car accepts, and check whether the listed power is suitable. A vehicle may connect physically but still charge slowly or not at all if the station’s configuration is incompatible.
  3. Filter for live availability and status. Remove stations shown as occupied, out of service or unavailable. ChargePoint’s app, for example, offers filters for available stations, fast charging, vehicle fit, connector, network and station status, along with real-time status information.
  4. Compare payment routes at the same station. Check the operator’s app or card, a roaming app or card, and ad-hoc or contactless payment where offered. The cheapest route at one site may be the operator’s app; at another it may be a roaming tariff.
  5. Calculate the complete session cost. Multiply the applicable energy or time rate by the amount and duration you expect, then add connection, session, idle, subscription and parking charges.
  6. Recheck immediately before starting. Confirm the final tariff, connector, availability and any overstay rule in the exact payment channel you will use. Do this before plugging in or authorising the session because both price and status can change.

Compare the whole tariff, not the headline rate

Use this checklist for every candidate. If a charge is not clearly stated, ask the operator or choose a station with transparent pricing rather than assuming it is zero.

Cost element How it is charged What to check
Energy Per kilowatt-hour (kWh) Is the rate the same for your payment route, connector and vehicle type?
Time Per minute or other time unit Does the clock start at plug-in, authorisation or delivery of energy? Does it continue after the battery stops accepting power?
Flat or session fee One charge per start, sometimes with a minimum or maximum Will a short top-up trigger the same fee as a large charge?
Connection fee Added when a session begins Is it charged once per session or per connector?
Idle or overstay fee Begins after charging ends or after a grace period How long is the grace period, and how quickly does the fee accumulate?
Membership Monthly or recurring payment What discounted rate or waived fee does it provide, and how many sessions will you actually use?
Parking Separate site or municipal charge Is parking paid through the charging app, a meter, an entrance barrier or a separate account?
Taxes and currency Included or added at checkout Is the displayed figure a consumer total for your country, and are roaming-conversion fees possible?

A low kWh rate can lose to a higher one when you buy little energy and the cheaper site has a large session fee. Conversely, a time-based tariff may be expensive for a vehicle that charges slowly, but competitive for a car that reaches its target quickly. Compare the tariff against your expected energy purchase and dwell time.

How to calculate your expected cost

Estimate the energy you need rather than using the battery’s full capacity. A simple calculation is:

energy cost = kWh purchased × applicable kWh rate

Then add every non-energy item:

total session cost = energy cost + time charges + connection/session fees + idle fees + membership allocation + parking

For a time tariff, replace the kWh calculation with the billable minutes. If a station uses both time and energy rates, include both. Use the car’s expected delivered energy, not only the percentage shown on the dashboard; charging losses mean the electricity drawn from the station can exceed the energy stored in the battery.

Include the cost of a detour

A station that is cheaper at the plug can be more expensive overall if it adds a long diversion, tolls or paid parking. Compare the extra driving energy and time with the charging-price difference. For a planned stop, a slightly dearer charger on your route may have the lowest trip cost.

Account for charging speed

Power ratings are not the same as the energy your vehicle will receive. Battery temperature, state of charge, the car’s maximum acceptance rate and a shared power cabinet can reduce the actual rate. A slower charger with a low time fee may be preferable for a long stop; a high-power site can be better when a time-based tariff or idle fee makes a short visit important.

Payment route can change the price

At the same physical charger, compare these options:

  • Operator app or account: Often provides the station owner’s tariff and live status. It may require account creation or a payment method.
  • Roaming app or card: Convenient across networks, but the roaming provider can add its own tariff or fee. Do not assume it matches the operator’s price.
  • Ad-hoc or contactless payment: Useful for a one-off session where available. Check whether the displayed amount is a maximum, a temporary authorisation or the final rate.
  • RFID card: A network-issued card can start a session without opening an app, but it is account-specific and does not compare nearby prices by itself.

Before authorising, make sure the app identifies the exact station and connector. A nearby pin can represent several chargers with different tariffs, power levels or parking arrangements.

Useful tools and what each one can—and cannot—tell you

ChargePoint app

ChargePoint says its app works across North America and Europe for finding stations, viewing real-time status, filtering by availability, speed, vehicle, connector, network and station status, and starting sessions through the app, supported tap-to-pay methods or an RFID card. Route planning is available to selected users. Its pricing warning is important: the owner or roaming partner sets the station price, and a third-party app may charge differently. These are provider-described features, not an independent finding that its network is cheapest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allego app

Allego describes an app for Europe that shows the price per kWh before you plug in and supports route stops. The company states that its service provides access to more than one million charge points across 15 countries; that is a company coverage claim, not an independently verified count of all public charge points. Allego describes a free-to-activate Smart offer and a monthly paid Plus option. A virtual card is available in the app after adding a payment method, and a physical card can be requested through the app. Check the current local offer, because coverage, rates and membership terms can change.

Chargeprice

Chargeprice describes a service for comparing ad-hoc and roaming tariffs and planning routes. Its comparison can help expose payment-route differences, but the service does not establish that every station or tariff is listed, current or universally cheapest. Verify the chosen price with the provider before charging.

Greece’s Charging Cost service

The Greek government provides a country-specific public-charging comparison tool that presents costs on a euro-per-kWh basis and allows provider filtering. It is a useful example of local public infrastructure data; it should not be treated as a global service or as evidence that the same prices apply outside Greece.

Memberships: when a monthly plan pays off

A subscription can reduce the rate or remove a fee, but it is worthwhile only when your expected savings exceed the recurring charge. Calculate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

monthly saving = (standard cost per session − member cost per session) × expected sessions − monthly fee

Use the number of sessions you realistically make at the participating network, not your total home and workplace charging. Include taxes, connection fees, idle charges and any minimum term. A plan that is cheap for frequent motorway charging may lose money for an occasional traveller. Compare the same station and payment route before and after membership; a roaming tariff may not receive the member discount.

UK rules: why the displayed maximum matters

The UK is a useful example of regulation, but these requirements should not be generalized to other countries. Guidance from the Department for Transport and the Office for Product Safety and Standards says public charge-point operators must display the maximum charging-session price in pounds or pence per kWh, and it addresses fixed charging fees, subscription prices, dynamic pricing and contactless payment.

The guidance states: “The price charged to the consumer must not exceed the maximum price that is displayed to the consumer prior to the start of their charging session.” Separate parking charges are not part of the charging-price disclosure when they are billed independently, so check the parking terms as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same UK guidance includes a 99% annual network-reliability requirement for rapid public charge points. This is an operator-level average across its rapid network over a calendar year, not a promise that any individual station will work 99% of the time.
