Enter your destination, add a charging stop, confirm the connector and network work with your vehicle, check availability shortly before departure, and keep a second station available if the route has few alternatives.
No single map is complete for every country, vehicle or network. Charging access, live-status data and route-planning features vary by region and software, so treat map results as planning information and verify the chosen station with its operator.

Start with your EV’s route planner
Begin in the car’s built-in navigation if it supports EV routing. Enter the destination and let the system account for the vehicle’s charging needs. Where the software offers charging-stop planning, review the proposed station rather than accepting it blindly: confirm that the stop is reachable, that the site is open to your vehicle and that the suggested charging time fits your trip.
A route-aware planner is different from a simple charger map. It places a stop on your actual journey and may estimate how long to charge. This is particularly useful on unfamiliar roads, where the nearest station on a map may be in the wrong direction or require a detour. Vehicle software and regional coverage differ, so the same model may expose different functions in different markets.

What to confirm before accepting a suggested stop
- The station is on, or reasonably close to, your route.
- The connector shown matches your vehicle’s charging port.
- The network permits your vehicle to use that location.
- The station’s access hours and operating conditions suit your arrival time.
- You have a second viable location if the route has limited alternatives.
Use Google Maps or Waze to add context to the route

Google documents a feature that lets compatible vehicles add a charging station as a stop and display a recommended minimum charging time. The exact functions depend on the vehicle and region. In a supported vehicle, enter the destination, choose the option to add a charging station, inspect the proposed stop and review the minimum charging recommendation before continuing. Details are described in Google Maps’ electric-vehicle help page.
The recommendation is a planning aid, not a promise that the car will reach a particular battery percentage. Your actual charging time can depend on the vehicle, the station and conditions at the site. If your vehicle does not expose the feature, use another route planner and then check the station in a charger map and the operator’s app.
Waze along a planned journey
Waze can show charging stations along a route where the feature is available. Plan the journey, look for charging stations on or near the route, and open a candidate location to decide whether it is practical. Availability of this feature varies, so a station list in one country or vehicle setup may not appear in another. Waze explains the feature in its EV charging help documentation.

Inspect candidate stations in a charger map
After a route planner suggests a stop, open a dedicated charger map to compare nearby locations. PlugShare says its map can filter by charging network and live availability. Those filters help narrow a long list to stations that are relevant to your vehicle and more likely to be usable when you arrive.
PlugShare also explicitly describes itself as a mapping tool rather than a navigation platform: “PlugShare is a mapping tool to help locate EV charging locations; PlugShare is not a navigation platform.” Use your normal navigation app or the car’s navigation to drive to the selected station. Filters worth applying
- Connector: select the plug type your vehicle accepts. If more than one connector is physically possible, verify the vehicle manual and operator listing before relying on it.
- Network: narrow results to networks your vehicle can access and that you are prepared to pay through.
- Availability: use live-status information when offered, while remembering that status can change before arrival.
- Location: inspect the site’s position and whether it is actually convenient for your route, rather than choosing only by distance.
Filters reduce unsuitable results; they do not guarantee a working connector, an open site or an available stall. Use the operator’s current listing as the final check.
Verify network access in the operator’s app
A station appearing on a public map does not automatically mean your vehicle may charge there. Open the charging network’s own app or official map for the candidate site. Check eligibility, current status, payment setup and any instructions that apply to your vehicle or market.
Operator information is especially important when a network has opened only some locations to vehicles from other manufacturers. Tesla states that non-Tesla drivers can view available Superchargers by opening the Tesla app, tapping “Find a Charger,” or using its interactive Find Us map. It also cautions that not every Supercharger location is necessarily open to non-Tesla EVs. Start at Tesla’s Supercharging support page and verify the individual site in the app or map.
Why the network app is the final authority
- It can identify locations that are eligible for your vehicle, rather than merely displaying a pin.
- It may show the operator’s current status and instructions more directly than a third-party map.
- It can reveal how the session is started and what payment setup is required.
- It may distinguish locations with different access rules in the same country or region.
Keep the app installed and signed in before leaving if the network requires it to start a session. Do not assume that an account or payment method accepted by one network will work on another.
Check the connector and adapter before you leave
Connector compatibility is a vehicle-and-network question, not just a matter of finding a public charger. Identify your vehicle’s charging port, the connector offered at the station and any adapter approved for that combination. Then check the vehicle manufacturer’s and network’s compatibility guidance.
Tesla’s North American example
Tesla’s guidance for North American Supercharging says vehicles equipped with NACS can connect without an adapter. CCS1 vehicles need an NACS DC adapter supplied by Tesla or by the vehicle manufacturer, and only supported sites can be used. Tesla prohibits third-party adapters for Supercharging. These rules are specific to the network and market; they are not a universal rule for every EV or country. Read Tesla’s guidance for charging other EVs for the current eligibility details.

Do not buy or pack a generic adapter on the assumption that it will unlock every station. Before recommending or using one, match all four items: vehicle model, charging port, station network and the manufacturer’s approved adapter guidance.
How to choose the most practical charging stop
Once you have compatible candidates, compare the stop as a travel decision rather than choosing the closest pin. Use the following checklist for each location.
1. Confirm route position
Open the station in your navigation app and check the approach from your direction of travel. A station across a divided road, inside a restricted facility or beyond a difficult detour may be less practical than one slightly farther away.

2. Check access and timing
Review opening information and any operator instructions. A station that is useful during the day may not be accessible at the time you plan to arrive. If a listing does not state access details, treat that as an unresolved risk and verify it through the operator.
3. Match the connector
Confirm the exact connector and whether your vehicle needs an approved adapter. Do not infer compatibility from the network name alone.
4. Review current availability
Use live availability where the map or operator provides it, then recheck close to departure. Live data is a snapshot, not a reservation or guarantee that a stall will remain free until you arrive.

5. Check how you will start and pay
Open the network’s app or official listing to see the required account, payment method or activation process. Set this up before you are low on charge, when mobile coverage or time pressure could make troubleshooting harder.
6. Select a backup
Identify another compatible station on the route or near the destination. A backup is most valuable where there are few alternatives, where status data is limited or where the first site has uncertain access. A backup plan improves resilience but does not guarantee that the second site will be available.
A repeatable charging-stop planning procedure
- Record the essentials: note your vehicle model, charging port, any approved adapter and the networks you can use.
- Plan the journey: enter the destination in the vehicle’s EV route planner, Google Maps where supported, or another route-aware navigation tool.
- Add a charging stop: use the planner’s charging-stop function when available. Review the proposed stop and any recommended minimum charging time.
- Search independently: open a charger map and inspect stations near the route, not just the planner’s first suggestion.
- Apply filters: filter by connector, network and live availability where those controls exist.
- Open the operator listing: verify that your vehicle is eligible, the site is accessible, the status is current and the payment or activation method is ready.
- Compare the candidates: consider route position, access, connector, status and practical backup options.
- Save the primary and backup stops: add both to your navigation or record them where you can reach the details without searching again.
- Recheck before departure: refresh the operator’s app or map and confirm that the primary stop still meets your requirements.
- Navigate to the confirmed site: use the vehicle’s navigation or a navigation app for driving directions; use the charger map for reference rather than turn-by-turn guidance.

These tools are complementary, not ranked winners. The best combination depends on your vehicle, country, connector and the networks on your route. The available sources do not establish one universally complete app for every driver.

The station is missing from the vehicle’s route planner
Search the location in a charger map, then verify it in the operator’s app. If the station is compatible and accessible, add it as a normal navigation destination or stop. The absence of a pin in the vehicle system may reflect regional data or software coverage rather than proof that the station does not exist.
The map shows a charger but the operator does not show access
Do not rely on the third-party listing alone. Treat eligibility and access as unconfirmed until the operator’s current listing or support information resolves them. Choose a different verified station if you cannot confirm the details before departure.

Use the backup you identified during planning. Status can change between the map update and your arrival, so live availability should influence your choice but should not be treated as a reservation.

Your vehicle has a different connector
Stop and verify the manufacturer-approved adapter and the network’s policy. The Tesla North American example illustrates why: supported CCS1 vehicles require an approved NACS DC adapter, while third-party adapters are prohibited for Tesla Supercharging. If the combination is not explicitly supported, select a station with the correct connector instead.
The app or payment setup fails at the station
Use the operator’s instructions and any supported activation method shown in its current listing. If you cannot start a session, move to the backup rather than spending your remaining range troubleshooting an unverified method.
Why you should recheck immediately before departure
Availability, access conditions and software support are changeable. Refresh the target station in the operator’s app or official map shortly before leaving, even if you planned the trip earlier. Confirm the same connector, eligibility and access information you checked during planning.

How much public charging coverage is available?
There is no single independent total for all public chargers worldwide in the cited material, and counts vary as networks expand. Tesla’s current support page states that its network has over 80,000 global Superchargers. Tesla’s figure is dynamic, attributed to Tesla and accessed in 2026; it is not a count of every public charger or a guarantee that all sites accept every EV. Use the operator’s live map to determine which locations matter for your vehicle and trip.
Regional and vehicle differences to keep in mind
- Vehicle support: built-in EV routing and charging-stop suggestions depend on the vehicle and its software.
- Country or region: Google Maps, Waze and network access features can vary by market.
- Network participation: a network may open some locations to other manufacturers while restricting others.
- Connector standards: the same physical-looking station category can require different plugs or approved adapters in different markets.
- Status quality: live availability is useful where provided, but every system can become outdated before arrival.
Plan with the information available for your specific car, route and country. When a detail is not stated by the operator or vehicle manufacturer, treat it as unknown rather than assuming universal compatibility.
