Use a nationwide charger map to find candidate stops, then verify each one in the relevant network app before you leave. The practical checks are connector type, AC or DC charging, live availability, access method and a realistic backup. In South Africa, Type 2 is the standard public AC connector and CCS2 is the standard public DC connector, but a map pin does not guarantee that a charger is working or available.
Start with a map, but do not treat the pin as a promise
GridCars says its public map displays publicly available chargers regardless of network and that its stations are integrated with Google Maps. Its ChargePocket app is intended for nearby-station discovery, real-time availability, trip planning and charging-session control. Those are useful starting points, not a guarantee that every public charger is listed, operational or accessible when you arrive.

For a long-distance journey, search the complete route and destination first. Shortlist more stops than you strictly need, then inspect each candidate in the operator’s current listing shortly before departure. A charger that appears on a static map may be occupied, offline, temporarily closed, restricted to customers or affected by a fault. Keep at least one feasible alternative for any leg where another stop exists.

Charger totals are not directly comparable because they come from different dates, platforms and definitions. GridCars currently describes its own network as having more than 350 AC and DC fast-charging stations and says it represents more than 70% of publicly operated charging infrastructure. That is a company statement, not an independent national census.

A 2023 Western Cape Government report recorded approximately 286 publicly accessible stations, including dealerships, and attributed that estimate to GridCars. The same report cited a 2022 PlugShare count of 277 public stations: 214 associated with GridCars, 60 with Rubicon and three with Zimicharge. These figures should not be combined into a growth trend or treated as a definitive 2026 total.
Match the charger to your vehicle
Connector compatibility is the first hard filter. The Western Cape Government’s 2023 report says Type 2 is South Africa’s standard plug for AC charging and supports single- or three-phase AC. CCS2 extends the Type 2 design with DC pins and is the standard connector used at public DC fast-charging stations in South Africa. The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s December 2023 Electric Vehicle White Paper says South Africa adopted SANS 62196-2 for AC charging and SANS 62196-3 for DC charging.
| Charging option | South African connector standard | What to check before choosing a stop |
|---|---|---|
| Public AC | Type 2 | Whether your car has a compatible Type 2 inlet, the station’s socket or tethered lead, and whether you must bring a cable |
| Public DC fast charging | CCS2 | Whether your vehicle has a CCS2 inlet and whether the station’s live status and access method are suitable |
Do not select a station solely because its map listing shows a high power figure. Your vehicle may accept less power, battery temperature may limit the rate, and a dual-connector unit may divide available power between two cars. As GridCars CEO Winstone Jordaan put it, “A charging network is not defined only by the power rating printed on a charger.”

How to search and verify a route
- Enter the full journey. Use GridCars’ map or another current charger map to search your departure point, destination and the roads you intend to use. Check nearby towns as well as motorway or major-route stops.
- Open every candidate station. Record the connector (Type 2 or CCS2), charging type (AC or DC), address, operating hours or site restrictions, and any notes about parking or access.
- Check live status close to departure. ChargePocket advertises real-time availability. The relevant network’s app or live listing is more useful than an old screenshot or an unverified map pin. Recheck after a major delay or detour.
- Confirm that your car can use it. Compare the station connector with the inlet fitted to your vehicle. Check whether your car’s navigation or charging settings impose a battery-state or temperature limitation before a fast-charge stop.
- Confirm authorization. Determine whether the site requires an app account, RFID card, QR code, a PIN or another method. Do not assume that an account for one network starts a session on another.
- Plan a reserve stop. Choose a second practical charger on the same corridor where possible. A reserve is most valuable on a remote leg, where the next option may be many kilometres away.
- Save the details offline. Keep the address, phone number if displayed, connector information and backup location available if mobile coverage is poor.
Compare stops using the same checklist
| Decision factor | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Connector | Is it Type 2 AC or CCS2 DC, and does my car have that inlet? | An incompatible plug cannot be solved by an app or payment method. |
| Charging type | Will AC suit the time available, or is DC needed for this leg? | AC and DC serve different stop lengths; the sources do not establish a universal charging-time estimate. |
| Live availability | Does the current listing show available, occupied, offline or unknown? | Status changes as drivers arrive, sessions end and equipment faults occur. |
| Access | Can I start the session with my app, RFID, QR process or another approved method? | A technically compatible charger may still be unusable without authorization. |
| Route position | Is the station reachable with a margin, and is there another stop beyond it? | Arriving with no reserve leaves little protection against a queue or fault. |
| Site conditions | Is it at a dealership, shopping centre, hotel or other location with relevant hours or rules? | Publicly listed does not always mean 24-hour access. |
AC charging: carry the right cable
GridCars says drivers will likely need the Mode 3 cable supplied with the vehicle for an AC public-charging session. The report’s Type 2 standard explains why a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable is commonly relevant, but cable arrangements differ by station and vehicle. Some AC units provide a socket; others may have a permanently attached lead.
- Check the vehicle handbook and the equipment supplied with your car before buying anything.
- Verify that the cable’s vehicle-side connector and station-side connector are Type 2 and rated for the car’s permitted AC current.
- Keep the cable dry, inspect it for damage and route it so pedestrians cannot trip over it.
- Do not assume that owning a cable makes every Type 2 listing usable; confirm the station’s socket arrangement and access rules.
There is no evidence here that every EV owner needs to purchase an additional cable. Start by identifying what came with the vehicle and what the selected station requires.

Starting and ending a GridCars session
The following authorization paths are specific to GridCars and should not be generalized to other South African networks:
- RFID: Swipe a registered RFID card at the charger where supported.
- App remote start: Start from the app when the charging unit is online.
- QR authorization: Scan the charger’s QR code. An online unit may start remotely; an offline path may request a PIN.
- AutoCharge: GridCars describes this for registered vehicles on supported new GridCars DC equipment when the unit is online.
After authorization, check the charger display or the vehicle dashboard to confirm that energy is flowing. To finish, use the charger controls or app, allow the session to end automatically where applicable, and reserve the emergency stop for a genuine safety need. If the app shows a session active after unplugging, follow the network’s stop procedure rather than driving away and assuming it has ended.

Choose a departure buffer
Begin with the vehicle’s available battery and the actual road distance, then allow for weather, elevation, traffic, payload, towing and detours. The charger map tells you where equipment is located; it does not calculate a guaranteed remaining range. Set the first stop early enough that you can reach it if consumption is higher than expected.
Use a primary and reserve stop for each difficult leg
For a leg with several stations, select a primary stop that fits your connector and current status, then identify a reserve farther along or on a nearby route. Recheck both immediately before leaving. If the primary becomes occupied or offline, divert while you still have enough charge to reach the reserve rather than waiting until the battery is critically low.
Allow time for the site, not only the plug
Include time to enter a complex, find the bay, authenticate, position the car and handle a failed start. A charger at a dealership or retail site may follow the host’s opening hours or parking rules. Save the exact address and any access note shown in the listing.

Re-plan after an interruption
If a stop is unavailable, do not repeatedly retry a failed session until the battery margin disappears. Check the app for another live station, reduce speed if safe, limit high-consumption accessories and head for the reserve. If no reachable alternative exists, use the network’s support channel or roadside assistance before the vehicle is immobilized.
What to expect from the evolving network
Public infrastructure is expanding, but coverage and reliability vary by corridor. The Western Cape Government report expected continued expansion to support long-distance travel between cities and provinces. The dtic’s December 2023 White Paper called for coordinated analysis and planning of national short- and long-term charging-infrastructure needs.
GridCars announced a phased upgrade in August 2026. The announcement describes a 120 kW dual-connector DC charger with two CCS2 connectors. Its available power is allocated between the two charging positions, it supports vehicle architectures from 150 V to 1,000 V, and additional sites are planned to improve route coverage. The announcement does not establish that every site has already been upgraded or that a particular installation will be available on your travel date; verify each location in current GridCars channels.
Troubleshooting a charger that does not work
The station is listed but offline
Refresh the network listing and check the time stamp if shown. Do not rely on the station until the status changes to a usable state. Switch to your preselected backup while you have sufficient range.
The plug does not fit
Stop before forcing anything. Confirm whether the listing is Type 2 AC or CCS2 DC and compare it with the inlet on your car. A Type 2 AC cable cannot substitute for a CCS2 DC connection.

The app will not start the session
Check mobile data, account status and whether the unit is online. If the station offers an RFID or QR route, use the documented alternative. For an offline QR process, follow the displayed PIN instructions. Avoid repeated payment attempts until you know whether the first request succeeded.
The charger starts but the car is not charging
Check the vehicle dashboard for a charging warning, confirm that the connector is fully latched and verify that the car is in the required parked state. Look at the charger display for an error code and contact the network operator if the session remains unresolved. Do not disconnect another driver’s vehicle.
The station is occupied
Use the live listing to look for another compatible site. If waiting is unavoidable, check whether the host has a queue or time limit and keep the reserve route available. Never block a charging bay after your session has finished.

Do I need to buy a Type 2 cable?
Not automatically. GridCars says an AC session will likely require the Mode 3 cable supplied with the vehicle. Check your car’s included equipment and the station’s socket arrangement before purchasing an additional cable.
Can I use a GridCars authorization method at every network?
No. RFID, app remote start, QR authorization and AutoCharge are methods GridCars describes for its own equipment and registered users. Other operators may require different accounts, cards or payment steps.
Does a 120 kW charger always deliver 120 kW to my car?
No. The announced GridCars unit has two CCS2 connectors and allocates available power between them. Actual charging is also constrained by the vehicle, battery conditions and the station’s operating state.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far apart are public EV chargers on South African routes?
No single current spacing figure is established. Distances vary by corridor and network, so select stops from the actual route and retain a reserve rather than relying on a national average.
Should I choose AC or DC for a road trip?
Choose a connector your vehicle supports, then match the charging type to the time available and the route’s backup options. The available sources establish the Type 2 and CCS2 standards but do not provide a universal charging-time comparison.
What should I do if a charger becomes unavailable while I am travelling?
Check the network’s live listing, switch to the preselected compatible backup and contact the operator if authorization or equipment support is needed. Re-plan while you still have enough battery to reach the alternative.
