Start with the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, verify the exact engine, transmission, body style and trim, then trace the original equipment part number before comparing aftermarket, remanufactured and salvage alternatives. For service, use a shop that knows the marque, has the required diagnostic equipment and gives you a written estimate before work begins.
1. Identify the exact vehicle before searching
“Same model” is not precise enough for parts work. A discontinued nameplate may have several engines, transmissions, wiring revisions, body configurations and trim packages. A component that fits one production year can be electrically or physically incompatible with another.

Record the 17-character VIN
Photograph the VIN rather than copying it from memory. The primary VIN is usually visible through the windshield on the driver’s side and on the vehicle title or registration. Also photograph the door-jamb certification label and any engine or emissions labels.
NHTSA’s vPIC platform is a centralized VIN-decoding and manufacturer-information service intended for model years 1981 and forward. Use the decoded result as a verification step, not as a substitute for checking the physical vehicle. Compare the decoded year, make, model, engine and body information with the labels and your title.

Write down the specifications a parts counter needs
- Model year and production date, if available
- Make, model and body style
- Trim level and drivetrain
- Engine size, engine family or engine code
- Transmission type and, when listed, transmission code
- Two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configuration
- Left- or right-hand position for location-specific parts
- Any factory options that affect electronics, brakes, suspension or climate control
Keep the failed part. Photograph every label, barcode, connector, casting mark and number stamped or molded into it. If the part has a control module, save its calibration or identification label. These details often distinguish two parts that look identical in an online photograph.
Get the correct manual
After confirming the VIN, obtain a repair or service manual that explicitly matches the year, engine and trim. A manual for the same model name but a different engine or generation can show incorrect torque values, wiring diagrams or procedures. Also retain the owner’s manual; Federal Trade Commission guidance directs owners to follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule in it.
2. Check safety information before buying anything
Run the VIN through the recall search
NHTSA’s recall tool accepts a VIN or a vehicle year, make and model. Search by VIN first, then check by year, make and model so you do not miss information associated with a broader campaign. An unrepaired safety recall should be taken to a dealership for the free remedy. The fact that a model is discontinued does not by itself cancel a recall remedy.
Do not buy a replacement for a recalled safety component until you know whether the manufacturer or dealer will perform the repair. Spending money on a part that should be supplied and installed under a recall can leave you with the wrong component and no reimbursement.
Search investigations, complaints and manufacturer communications
Search the vehicle’s year, make and model for complaints, investigations and manufacturer communications. NHTSA also publishes technical service bulletins and other manufacturer communications that can be searched by year, make and model. A bulletin is not automatically a free repair, but it can identify a known diagnostic path, revised part number or required programming procedure.

Save the campaign number, bulletin title, date and the symptoms it addresses. Give those details to the shop. They can prevent unnecessary parts replacement when the actual fix is a wiring repair, software update or revised installation procedure.
3. Ask the original-equipment channel to trace the part
Contact an automaker customer-care line or a dealer parts department with the VIN and the number from the old part. Ask for a complete part-number trace, not merely whether the part is “available.”

Questions to ask the parts desk
- What was the original equipment number for this VIN?
- Has that number been superseded? If so, what are every current and previous replacement number?
- Is the current number stocked locally, at a regional warehouse or only on a made-to-order basis?
- Is inventory available elsewhere in the dealer network?
- Is the part shared with another model, year, engine or body style?
- Does installation require programming, calibration, a software update or one-time-use hardware?
- What is the return policy if the part is ordered incorrectly?
Record the answer, the employee’s name or reference number and the date. Dealer and warehouse inventory changes, so an answer that is accurate today may not be accurate when you are ready to order.
Understand what “discontinued” means
A vehicle model can be discontinued while individual parts remain in production. Conversely, a part can be obsolete even when the vehicle is common. NHTSA’s legal interpretation states: “There is no provision in the Safety Act or in any of our safety standards or other regulations that requires a manufacturer to make replacement parts available for any particular period of time, or, for that matter, at all.”
That means the manufacturer is not generally required to keep every replacement component available for a set number of years. It does not mean that no parts exist; it means you must verify availability and then use other channels when the original-equipment route ends.

4. Expand the search in controlled steps
Use the most reliable identifier first and broaden only when necessary. This sequence reduces the chance of buying a visually similar but incompatible component.

- Search the exact original equipment number. Include punctuation and suffixes, then repeat the search without spaces or hyphens if the catalog uses a different format.
- Search the superseded number. A current replacement may have a different suffix or an entirely new number.
- Search the full vehicle description plus the component. Include engine code, transmission, body style and side or position, such as left, right, front or rear.
- Check documented interchange numbers. Treat an interchange listing as a lead to verify, not as proof that the part will work in your vehicle.
- Compare the condition and terms. Evaluate new aftermarket, remanufactured or rebuilt, and salvage parts using the same compatibility and warranty questions.
5. Compare new, remanufactured and salvage parts
The least expensive part is not necessarily the least expensive repair. A lower-priced component can become costly if it requires additional diagnosis, repeated shipping or a second installation.

The FTC distinguishes new, remanufactured, rebuilt, reconditioned and salvage parts. It notes that salvage parts may be the only source for some items, while their reliability is not guaranteed. FTC rules also prohibit misleading claims that used parts are new, rebuilt, remanufactured or repaired, and restrict “factory rebuilt” wording.
Safety-critical and calibrated components need extra scrutiny
Apply the highest verification standard to brakes, steering, suspension, airbags, seat-belt components, electronic stability systems, engine-control modules and emissions equipment. Confirm not only physical fit but also the required calibration, software, connector pinout and legal specification. Ask the shop whether the replacement must be programmed or calibrated after installation.
6. Buy from a recycler without guessing
When a dealer or new-parts supplier cannot provide the component, a professional automotive recycler can be useful. “Fits” in a listing is a claim to verify, not proof of interchangeability.

Information to request before payment
- The donor vehicle’s VIN, model year, engine, transmission and trim
- Mileage at removal
- Whether the vehicle was running or damaged when dismantled
- Tests performed on the component and the test conditions
- Clear photographs of labels, connectors, mounting points and damage
- Warranty duration and what labor, shipping or diagnostic costs it excludes
- Return period, restocking fee and any required test documentation
For electronic modules, ask whether the unit is locked to the donor vehicle or requires vehicle-specific programming. For body panels and interior pieces, confirm color code, side, fastener locations and whether clips or brackets are included. For engines and transmissions, verify the exact code and included accessories instead of relying on displacement alone.
7. Choose a shop that can still support the car
Parts availability and repair expertise are separate questions. A shop may be willing to install a part but lack the diagnostic equipment, wiring information or software needed to identify the failure correctly.
Screen shops before scheduling
- Ask how often the shop works on your marque and generation.
- Confirm that it has the scan tools, manufacturer-level information or adapters required for the vehicle.
- Ask whether technicians can obtain wiring diagrams, service procedures and calibration data.
- Find out whether the shop will install customer-supplied parts and what warranty it gives on that labor.
- Ask about diagnostic fees, labor rate, parts markup, storage charges and disposal fees.
- Confirm how long the vehicle may remain at the shop while a rare part is sourced.
A specialist familiar with the marque can often identify shared components, common failure points and repairable subcomponents that a general listing will not show. That expertise is especially valuable when the original part number has been replaced or the fault could be in wiring rather than the component itself.

Before authorizing work, ask for a written estimate that identifies the diagnosed condition, proposed parts, labor and any additional charges. FTC advice recommends finding out whether a diagnostic charge applies, obtaining a written estimate, approving overruns and keeping the completed repair order.
Make the estimate specific
- Describe the symptom and the test result supporting the diagnosis.
- List the part number, condition and source for each proposed component.
- Separate parts, labor, diagnostic time, programming, shipping and taxes.
- State whether the estimate includes removal and disposal of the old part.
- Set an approval limit for additional work.
- Record the warranty term and whether it covers labor as well as the part.
Do not authorize an open-ended search for parts. If the first source fails, require the shop to call you with the proposed substitute, price, lead time, compatibility evidence and return terms.

Know what happens when the diagnosis changes
A diagnostic estimate can change after access is gained or a circuit is tested. The shop should explain the new finding and obtain approval before exceeding the agreed limit. If a replacement part does not solve the problem, ask what test established that the original component was faulty and whether the supplier’s return policy requires a documented test.
9. Keep a repair record that helps the next search
Save the estimate, final invoice, completed repair order, diagnostic reports, photographs and every part number used. Record whether a number was original, superseded, aftermarket, remanufactured or salvage. Keep warranty terms and the date the part was installed.
Ask for replaced parts where local law permits. They can help identify the actual failure, provide a casting or label number and support a warranty claim. The record also gives the next parts counter or mechanic reliable information instead of forcing them to repeat the entire identification process.

Ask whether the failed part can be repaired
Some components are serviceable at the subcomponent level. A specialist may be able to rebuild a starter, alternator, steering rack or electronic module, depending on the design and availability of internal parts. Get the repair scope, testing method and warranty in writing.
Check whether the system has an approved substitute
A revised part may require a bracket, connector, software update or different installation procedure. Do not modify wiring, mounting points or safety systems merely to force a near-match. Ask the manufacturer channel or a marque specialist for documentation showing the approved conversion.
Consider a donor vehicle strategically
If the vehicle has high sentimental or practical value, a complete donor vehicle can supply multiple trim-specific, interior or electronic parts. Calculate storage, dismantling, transport and testing costs before buying. A donor’s VIN and mileage should still be recorded for every component removed.

12. Common mistakes that cause failed repairs
- Searching by model name alone: this ignores engine, trim and production changes.
- Assuming a visual match is functional: connectors, calibration and internal programming may differ.
- Ignoring superseded numbers: the original number may be obsolete while a revised replacement remains available.
- Buying before checking a recall: the remedy may be handled by a dealer at no charge.
- Accepting “fits” without evidence: request the part number, donor VIN or documented interchange.
- Forgetting labor and programming: the installed cost can exceed the listed part price.
- Using a shop without the right equipment: an installation cannot compensate for missing diagnostic or calibration capability.
- Failing to document the repair: without the part number and warranty, the next failure starts from zero.
