For a current, official automobile result, begin with the FIA World Land Speed Records page. It links to the absolute world-record list, separate Category A, B, C and D lists, the regulations and the record-attempt procedure. Use the FIA Land Speed Record Archives for older material. For motorcycles, use American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) resources and check whether the entry is an AMA national or Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) world record. The key is to match the governing body, record status, category, class, distance, start format and course before comparing speeds.
Choose the right official source first
Current FIA automobile records
The FIA World Land Speed Records page is the starting point for records it currently recognizes for automobiles and other FIA-governed wheeled vehicles. Its lists are divided into an absolute record section and four main categories: A, B, C and D. Open the page, then select the absolute list or the category list that matches the vehicle. The linked files are the authority for the current entry, not a headline, social-media post or an unofficial leaderboard.

The FIA describes a land speed record as an officially recognized speed for a wheeled vehicle on land, calculated from distance and elapsed time. A class result can be perfectly official without being the outright fastest vehicle ever recorded, because the class may limit the vehicle by engine type or capacity, weight, body shape or other classification rules.

For earlier attempts, consult the FIA Land Speed Record Archives. The archive contains historical lists and regulations, but the FIA says the underlying collection is a paper archive and that additional material is being added as time and funding allow. An absent file therefore means that the online archive may not yet be complete; it does not prove that no historical record existed.

Motorcycle records
The FIA archive explicitly excludes motorcycles. Motorcycle results should be checked through the AMA Land Speed Records resource and the applicable FIM record information. The AMA says its championship supports both AMA national records and FIM world records, so identify which of those two statuses an entry carries before calling it a world record. The AMA describes the Bonneville Salt Flats venue used for its event as covering 40 square miles; that is useful context about the course, not a substitute for the record listing.
Understand what kind of record you are looking at
“Land speed record” is not one universal row of numbers. The FIA recognizes different record formats, and a valid comparison keeps like with like.

For straight-line attempts, the FIA describes averaging two runs in opposing directions. This reduces the effect of wind or a gradient. The FIA also recognizes distance and time endurance records on closed racetracks, so a high speed from an endurance event is not automatically comparable with a one-mile flying-start speed.

Find a current FIA class result step by step
- Open the current records page. Go to the FIA World Land Speed Records page. Treat the page and its linked lists as the current reference, and note the date on which you accessed them because entries can change.
- Select the correct list. Choose Absolute World Records if you want the outright result, or Category A, B, C or D when the question concerns a vehicle class. Do not use the absolute list to answer a class-specific question.
- Locate the complete classification. Read the category, group and class together. A class label without its parent category or group can describe a different technical rule set from the one you intended.
- Read the distance and start type. Record whether the entry is a flying start, standing start, a specified distance, or a timed endurance result. A “mile” result and a “kilometre” result are not interchangeable unless the record format says they are.
- Capture the official result fields. Copy the listed speed and units, vehicle, driver or drivers, date, venue and country. FIA Category A rows, for example, present these fields in the record entry.
- Check the vehicle definition. Note the propulsion and engine description, capacity where stated, weight or body-shape restrictions and any other class descriptor. Those details explain why a slower-looking entry can still be the record for a narrowly defined class.
- Check whether the entry is confirmed. A news release can describe an attempt before it appears in the official list. Look for the final FIA entry or confirmation in the FIA Bulletin.
- Save the source and access date. Record the exact list name, URL and date checked. This is important for volatile records and for any result announced near the date you are writing.
How to read every field in an official result

| Date, venue and country | Anchors the result to a specific attempt and course. | Is this the same course and date range as the result you are comparing? |
Keep the entire row together when quoting a result. A speed copied without its distance, start type and class can turn a valid statement into a misleading one.
Know when a result is provisional and when it is official
The FIA’s Appendix D process explains why an announcement is not always the final record. The complete attempt documentation is reviewed by the FIA Land Speed Records Commission. Under Article D14.2.5 of the Appendix D document published 12 March 2019, a new record is confirmed by publication in the FIA Bulletin after that review. The FIA records page links to the current regulations; anyone reporting on a live attempt should use the latest version there rather than assuming the 2019 document is unchanged.
A homologated certificate contains the type and classification where applicable, attempt date and venue, competitor and drivers, vehicle and engine, and the record’s distance or duration, time and average speed. These details are more authoritative than a rounded figure in a press report.

Example: a result announced before ratification
In an FIA release dated 11 August 2026, JCB Hydromax was described as having reached 406.320 mph (653.909 km/h) in a hydrogen internal-combustion result. That announcement called the figure provisional and subject to Commission ratification. Treat it as an announced provisional result unless the current FIA list or Bulletin now shows confirmation. The status can change, so check the live list at the time you publish or cite it.
Use the archive without mistaking gaps for nonexistence
The historical archive is useful when a record predates the current web lists, when a class has been renamed, or when you need the rules that governed an older attempt. Search the historical lists for the vehicle, driver, venue and year, then compare the classification used at that time with the modern category labels.
- If a historical file is present, copy its title, date and record fields exactly.
- If the relevant year or class is missing, remember that the FIA says digitization is ongoing.
- Do not infer that no record existed solely because it is absent online.
- Seek confirmation from the FIA when a historical claim matters and the online file does not settle it.
Older records may also use different units, terminology or class boundaries. Preserve the original wording, then explain any modern equivalent separately rather than silently converting the entry into a current class.

Find and label motorcycle records correctly
Start with the AMA Land Speed Records resource for motorcycle events and then determine whether the result is an AMA national record or an FIM world record. The FIA automobile lists and archive are not the right authority for a motorcycle claim, even when the attempt took place at a famous land-speed venue.
When recording a motorcycle result, capture the same core information used for an FIA entry—class, distance, start type, speed, motorcycle, rider, date and venue—plus the governing status (AMA national or FIM world). If a report says only “world record” without naming the sanctioning body, do not assume it means an FIM world record.
Compare two records without creating a false ranking
Use the following sequence whenever you compare results in an article, spreadsheet or database:

- Authority and status: Confirm that both entries come from the appropriate governing body and that each is confirmed rather than provisional.
- Record scope: Separate an absolute record from a category, group or class record.
- Vehicle type and propulsion: Identify automobile versus motorcycle and note the engine or propulsion definition.
- Distance or elapsed time: Match the measured distance or duration.
- Start and course: Match flying or standing start, straight-line versus closed-circuit format, and the venue where relevant.
- Units and precision: Keep the published mph or km/h value, then convert only if you label the conversion and retain the original.
- Date: Use the attempt date, not the date a story was published.

Two figures that illustrate the distinction
Outright FIA one-mile flying-start record
The FIA records page, accessed in 2026, states that the outright one-mile flying-start record is 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h), set by ThrustSSC with Andy Green in October 1997. This is an absolute result, not a record limited to a hydrogen engine, a piston-engine class or another narrower technical category.
Hydrogen internal-combustion result announced in 2026
The FIA’s 11 August 2026 announcement gave JCB Hydromax a speed of 406.320 mph (653.909 km/h) and described it as provisional pending ratification. It is a different record type and should not be presented as an attempt to replace the 763.035-mph outright record. Before publication, check whether the FIA has since placed the result in a confirmed category or class list.
Troubleshoot a missing or conflicting result
- The result appears in news but not in the FIA list: Treat it as provisional until the Commission review and FIA Bulletin confirmation are complete.
- You cannot find an old record: Check the FIA archive, then account for its stated digitization gaps. Absence from the website is not proof that the attempt never happened.
- The speed differs between sources: Check whether one source gives mph and the other km/h, whether one rounded the number, and whether they describe different distances, starts or classes.
- The entry seems slower than a famous record: Recheck category, group and class. A restricted class record is not intended to beat the absolute record.
- The source is about a motorcycle: Leave the FIA automobile lists and verify the AMA national or FIM world status instead.
- The record type is unclear: Look for the distance or duration, start type and course. Do not rank the speed until those fields are known.
- The rules are old: Use the latest regulations linked from the current FIA records page for a live attempt; the Appendix D document dated 12 March 2019 is historical guidance, not a guarantee that every procedure remains unchanged.
A citation checklist for your own record list
Before publishing a result, make sure your note contains:
- The governing authority (FIA, AMA or FIM) and the exact record status.
- Absolute, category, group and class labels, where applicable.
- Distance or duration, start type and course format.
- Speed in the published units, with any conversion clearly identified.
- Vehicle, engine or propulsion description, driver or rider, date, venue and country.
- A direct link to the relevant official page or list and the date you checked it.
- A “provisional” label for an announced attempt that has not yet been confirmed.
This method answers searches such as “official land speed record results,” “are there official speed records per engine size?” and “list of land speed records” without mixing authorities or record classes. The reliable result is the one whose authority, classification, measurement format and confirmation status all line up.
