Enter your destination on the Tesla touchscreen and let Trip Planner add Supercharger stops when the journey requires charging. For a nearby station, tap the lightning-bolt charging icon on the map, select a pin, and review its live details. Tesla navigation can display third-party chargers, but it does not automatically route through them; you must add one to the trip yourself. You can also build a trip in the Tesla app and send it to the car.

The exact menus and available features depend on your Tesla model, software version, connectivity package, and region. The procedures below follow Tesla’s current support documentation and the Maps and Navigation owner’s manual, while identifying where those variables matter.

How do I find a Supercharger?

The quickest way to locate a Tesla Supercharger from the car is the charging control on the map. You do not need to enter a destination first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the touchscreen map, tap the lightning-bolt charging icon.
  2. Choose a red Supercharger pin near your current location or along the visible map.
  3. Read the station card for details such as open-stall count, status updates, and maximum charge rate when Tesla provides them.
  4. Tap Navigate if you want turn-by-turn directions.

Tesla navigation generally guides you to the entrance of the property rather than directly to an individual stall. Once you arrive at a hotel, shopping center, parking garage, or other large site, zoom in on the map to see the charger position. Some locations include additional instructions, such as a gate code, a particular parking level, or an entrance to use. Tesla documents this behavior in its Supercharging guidance and travel tips.

Use the station card as a current check, not as a permanent promise. Stall occupancy, operating status, and the maximum rate shown can change before you arrive. If the site is busy or a charger is offline, select another pin and compare the route impact before committing.

What does the charging pin tell me?

The pin is more than a map marker. Open it before starting navigation to see the station’s current information, then compare that information with your battery estimate and arrival time. A pin may identify open stalls, a current status message, and a maximum charge rate where Tesla supplies that data. It can also include practical directions for a gate, floor, or entrance. Those details matter when a station is inside a managed property rather than directly beside a road.

Zooming in is especially useful at destinations with several buildings or parking areas. The route may end at the property entrance even though the stalls are behind a hotel, on an upper garage level, or in a separate lot. Follow the property instructions and the map position rather than assuming the first driveway is the charging entrance.

How do I plan a road trip with Tesla navigation?

Trip Planner is Tesla’s automatic charging-route feature. Entering a destination is the essential action; when the trip needs energy and Trip Planner is available in your region, the car inserts Supercharger stops and suggests how long to charge at each one.

Set a destination and confirm the charging plan

  1. Tap the search field on the vehicle touchscreen.
  2. Enter an address, place name, or saved location and select the correct result.
  3. Review the proposed route and the battery estimate at arrival.
  4. If the route requires charging, inspect the inserted Supercharger stops and their suggested charge times.
  5. Start navigation only after checking that the stops suit your schedule, vehicle, and destination.

Tesla says Trip Planner uses driving style, elevation, outside temperature, traffic, stall availability, and other inputs when it calculates stops and charge-time recommendations. Its Supercharger page describes the feature as providing a “convenient door-to-door experience” by considering those conditions. Estimates therefore change as weather, traffic, speed, and site occupancy change; they are not a fixed timetable. See Tesla’s explanations of charging and trip planning and the Supercharger network.

When stops do not appear

Open the vehicle’s Navigation settings and verify that Trip Planner is enabled. Automatic Supercharger routing is qualified by Tesla as available only where the feature is supported in your region. A model, software release, or market can therefore show different controls from another Tesla. If Trip Planner is enabled but the route still has no stop, check the arrival-energy estimate, destination, and current connectivity before assuming that the car can complete the trip without charging.

A short route may not need an automatic stop, while a longer route may show one only after the destination is entered correctly. Check that you selected the intended address rather than a similarly named place. If you make a substantial detour, change the destination or add a stop, allow the vehicle to recalculate before relying on the earlier estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the route before leaving

Look at every proposed stop rather than accepting the first plan blindly. Confirm the station’s location on the property, the available-stall information, and any site notes. A route that arrives with a very low battery margin may be technically possible but less resilient to a detour, cold weather, congestion, or a queue. Tesla’s estimates are useful for planning, but the driver remains responsible for choosing a safe charging margin.

Review the order and timing as well as the number of stops. A slightly different Supercharger may reduce a detour or offer more reported open stalls. If your schedule requires a meal or overnight stay, a Destination Charging location may make more sense for that portion of the trip than a brief en-route stop.

Can Tesla navigation show other charging stations?

Yes. Tesla navigation can display third-party charging locations on the map, but those stations have a different route-planning role from Tesla Superchargers.

Turn on third-party station display

  1. Open the vehicle’s map or Navigation settings.
  2. Enable the option to show third-party charging stations.
  3. Return to the map and select a displayed station to inspect its information.
  4. Choose the station as a destination or add it as a stop manually.

Trip Planner does not automatically insert these outside stations. Seeing a third-party charger on the map is therefore not evidence that the car will route through it when you enter a distant destination. Tesla’s Maps and Navigation owner’s manual describes the setting and the manual-add requirement. Menu names can change with software updates, and some models or regions may not expose every option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check compatibility before selecting an outside charger

A map listing does not establish that every vehicle can use that site. Check the connector, access rules, payment method, operating hours, and any vehicle restrictions in the station’s current information. Also consider whether the charger is actually on your route or requires a substantial detour. Treat the displayed data as a planning aid and verify the station’s live status before relying on it.

Adding the station manually also means you should inspect the revised arrival-energy estimate. The vehicle may choose a different Supercharger before or after the outside station, or indicate that charging is needed if the edited route leaves too little energy. Recheck the complete route rather than looking only at the third-party pin.

Which Tesla charging locations fit a trip?

The type of charging site affects how you should use it in a route. Superchargers are intended primarily for en-route, longer-distance charging. Destination Charging locations are commonly at places where you will spend more time, such as hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers. A third-party charger can fill either role, but it must be selected and added manually.

Charging option Typical route role How Tesla navigation treats it What to verify
Supercharger Fast charging during a road journey Trip Planner can recommend and insert stops when charging is needed and the feature is available in your region Current stall availability, status, charge rate where shown, property entrance, and site instructions
Destination Charging Charging while staying at a destination Displayed as a charging location; it is not the normal automatic long-distance stop type Whether the host permits use, access hours, parking rules, and the amount of time you will remain there
Third-party station Any en-route or destination stop outside Tesla’s network Can be displayed when enabled, but must be added to the route manually Connector compatibility, payment, operating status, access restrictions, and detour distance

Tesla describes Superchargers, Destination Charging, and navigation behavior in its Supercharging support article, travel guidance, and owner’s manual. Do not assume that every station is compatible with every Tesla, or that every site is open to every driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Superchargers are generally the practical choice when you need a shorter stop between cities. Destination Charging is better matched to time already spent at a hotel, restaurant, shopping center, or similar destination. The distinction is about route role, not a guarantee of a particular charging speed or access policy, so inspect the individual station listing.

How do I plan a trip in the Tesla app?

The app lets you prepare a route before you get into the vehicle. Tesla’s documented workflow is version-specific, so your labels may differ slightly after an app or vehicle update.

  1. Open the Tesla app and go to Locations.
  2. Choose Navigate and enter the destination.
  3. Open Edit Trip to add an intermediate stop.
  4. Arrange the stops in the desired order and review the resulting route.
  5. Send the trip to the vehicle.

The car receives the route when it has the required connectivity and is able to communicate with the app. After the route opens on the touchscreen, check the battery estimate, charging stops, and station details again; the vehicle may recalculate using its current state, traffic, temperature, and live site information. Tesla documents app pre-planning and route transfer on its Navigation features page and in the owner’s manual.

Planning in the app is useful for checking a route before departure, but it is not a substitute for the final in-car review. The vehicle knows its current battery state and can update the plan using current navigation data. Confirm that the route actually arrived, that the stops are in the intended order, and that the arrival estimate still leaves an appropriate margin.

  • Compact & Portable -for Tesla charger adapter is designed with lightweight, compact, and easy to carry. You can put it anywhere in the electric vehicle, so you can fully charge it quickly and easily on the go
  • How many stalls are reported open.
  • Current operating or status information.
  • Maximum charge rate, when Tesla displays it.
  • Additional instructions for gates, levels, or entrances.
  • The station’s position within the property after you zoom in.

Compare those details with your arrival time and energy margin. A station with a convenient highway exit may be preferable to one that appears closer on the map but requires a long drive through local streets. If the charger is inside a controlled property, confirm that you can enter, park, and leave during the hours you expect to arrive.

Tesla’s network page states that it has more than 80,000 Superchargers globally. That is Tesla’s current page claim, not a dated independent count, and the number can change as sites open or close. The same page explains that Trip Planner considers driving style, elevation, outside temperature, traffic, stall availability, and more; consult the page itself for the current network information.

How do I change or remove a charging stop?

You can edit the route after Tesla has inserted Supercharger stops. Tesla’s travel guidance describes selecting remove charging stops at the bottom of the directions. Removing a stop does not make the energy requirement disappear: the owner’s manual warns that the route may then display an alert saying charging is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the active directions on the touchscreen.
  2. Choose the control to remove charging stops.
  3. Read the revised arrival-energy estimate and any charging-needed alert.
  4. If the margin is unsuitable, restore the stop or add a different charger manually.

Use the same review process after adding or deleting any stop. A shorter route is not automatically the safer route if it leaves too little energy for weather, traffic, elevation, or an unexpected diversion. The relevant controls are described in Tesla’s Travel Tips and Maps and Navigation manual.

Why can the route or charging estimate change?

Trip Planner is recalculating a moving trip, not reading a fixed schedule. Tesla identifies several variables that can alter the recommendation:

  • Driving style and speed: energy use changes with acceleration and cruising speed.
  • Elevation: climbs consume more energy, while descents can recover some energy through regenerative braking.
  • Outside temperature: cold or very hot conditions affect consumption and charging.
  • Traffic: congestion changes travel time and energy use.
  • Stall availability: a busy site can alter the practical stop choice or expected wait.

Because these inputs change, check the station pin again before leaving and during a long journey when conditions shift. A route estimate is not a guarantee of an available stall or a particular charging duration.

If the estimate changes while you are driving, treat the new arrival percentage and stop recommendation as the current plan. Avoid deleting a stop merely to shorten the displayed route unless you have checked the revised energy requirement. If traffic or weather creates a larger change, select a station with suitable current availability and allow the car to recalculate.

Connectivity and regional limits to know

Tesla identifies navigation, maps, and voice commands as high-data-use features that require at least Standard Connectivity. Connectivity terms, included features, and third-party data licenses can change, so confirm what is active for your vehicle and market in Tesla’s charging support information.

Trip Planner and third-party station display are not necessarily identical across countries, models, or software versions. If a control is missing, look for an updated Navigation setting or consult the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle. Do not treat instructions shown for one market’s Model Y manual as a promise that the same label or option exists on every Tesla.

Non-Tesla drivers should check access separately. Tesla says availability for non-Tesla vehicles depends on whether a particular site has opened that access, and directs those drivers to the Tesla app’s Find a Charger feature or Tesla’s Find Us map. A Supercharger visible to a Tesla driver is therefore not automatically available to every electric vehicle.

A practical pre-departure checklist

  • Enter the final destination and confirm Trip Planner is active if your region supports it.
  • Check every automatically suggested Supercharger on the map.
  • Zoom in on each property to identify the entrance and stall location.
  • Read current stall, status, rate, and site-instruction information.
  • Confirm your vehicle can use any manually added third-party station.
  • Keep a reasonable arrival-energy margin for weather, traffic, elevation, and detours.
  • If you planned in the app, verify that the route reached the car and was recalculated with the vehicle’s current battery level.
  • Recheck the next station if conditions or your route change during the drive.

Following these checks uses Tesla navigation for what it does best—energy-aware routing to supported Superchargers—while preserving control when you need a Destination Charging site or an outside network.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a Supercharger near me?

On the Tesla touchscreen map, tap the lightning-bolt charging icon, select a red Supercharger pin, review its station card, and tap Navigate. Zoom in after arrival because navigation may end at the property entrance rather than at the stalls.

Does Tesla navigation automatically add charging stops?

When Trip Planner is enabled, supported in your region, and the trip needs energy, Tesla can insert Supercharger stops and recommend charge times. Review the proposed stops and arrival estimate before leaving.

Can Tesla navigation show other charging networks?

Yes. Enable third-party charging stations in the map or Navigation settings. You must select and add an outside station manually; Trip Planner does not automatically route through it.

Why is a charger visible but not selected for my route?

A displayed third-party station is only a map listing. Tesla’s Trip Planner automatically handles supported Supercharger stops, while outside stations require manual addition and a compatibility check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I plan a Tesla trip before getting in the car?

Yes. In the Tesla app, open Locations, choose Navigate, enter the destination, use Edit Trip to add stops, and send the route to the vehicle. Check it again on the touchscreen after the car recalculates.

What should I check on a station pin?

Check reported open stalls, operating status, maximum charge rate where shown, site instructions, and the charger’s exact position within the property. Recheck these details because they can change.

Can I remove a Supercharger stop?

Yes. Open the active directions and select remove charging stops. The route may then warn that charging is needed, so review the new arrival-energy estimate and restore or manually replace the stop if necessary.

Are all Superchargers open to every electric vehicle?

No. Tesla says non-Tesla access depends on the individual site and whether access has opened there. Check the Tesla app’s Find a Charger feature or Tesla’s Find Us map, along with the station’s current restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Enter the destination first and let Trip Planner build a Supercharger route when supported. Use the charging icon and station pins to compare live availability, property instructions, and route impact. Third-party chargers can be shown but must be added manually. Before departing, verify the route in the car, keep an energy margin, and recheck stations as traffic, weather, and stall availability change.
