If you already know a station’s frequency, enter it directly when supported or move through the band with the manual Tune control. Because menus differ by vehicle and AM reception changes with location and time of day, use your owner’s manual and treat a station listing or coverage map as identification—not a guarantee that your car will receive it.
Find an AM station in seven steps
Set up the radio while the vehicle is parked. Once you are moving, make only the adjustments that your vehicle permits safely and without taking your attention from traffic. The labels below are common, but your screen may use different names or place them in a different menu.

- Open the audio source. Tap Radio, Media, or Source on the infotainment screen or press the corresponding physical button.
- Select the AM band. Choose AM from the band or source list. Some systems show AM on the main radio screen; others require a Band menu first.
- Run Scan or Seek. Choose Scan to sample stations one after another, or press Seek/Track to jump to the next signal the receiver recognizes. A scan may play each station briefly before moving on; stop it when the desired broadcast is playing.
- Use the station list if available. Some receivers offer Refresh station list, Scan all, or a similar command. Run that refresh when you have moved to a different area or the list appears incomplete.
- Tune manually when necessary. Use the on-screen up/down controls, a tuning wheel, or a Tune/Enter knob to move through frequencies. Manual tuning is useful when Scan skips a weak station.
- Enter a known frequency directly. If your radio has a frequency-entry box or keypad, type the station’s known frequency and confirm. Direct entry is faster than stepping through the band, but it is available only on systems that provide the feature.
- Confirm and save the station. Listen for the station name or call sign, then save it to a preset or Favorites slot if your receiver supports presets.
If a station you expect is missing, repeat the search with manual tuning and check whether the station is operating at that time. Reception can change between daytime and nighttime, and a station may not be audible at your exact location even when it is licensed to serve the area.
What the buttons mean on different car radios
Vehicle interfaces are not standardized. Two manuals illustrate the range of controls you may encounter:

- The current U.S. online manual for one Kia system says to select AM from the media screen, scan and briefly listen to stations, refresh the station list, tune manually, save all available stations to Favorites, or enter a known frequency directly. It cautions that screen appearance and available functions can differ by model and specification. See the manufacturer’s AM-radio instructions for that example.
- A separate vehicle user manual has a dedicated Radio button, Seek/Track for automatic tuning, a Tune/Enter knob for manual tuning, and Scan for previewing stations with good signal strength. Its controls are an example rather than a universal layout; the manual is available as a PDF at FCC ID.
Look for these likely labels when your system differs:
| Label or control | Typical function | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Radio, Media, Source | Opens the audio-source selector | When you are listening to Bluetooth, USB, or another input |
| AM or Band | Selects the AM broadcast band | Before scanning or tuning |
| Scan | Samples multiple receivable stations, often briefly | When you want to discover what is available |
| Seek or Track | Moves automatically to the next station the receiver detects | When you want a quick next-station search |
| Tune, Tune/Enter, up/down arrows | Moves through frequencies manually | When automatic search skips a station or you know approximately where to look |
| Direct frequency entry | Jumps to a typed frequency | When you already know the station frequency |
| Favorites or Presets | Stores a station for one-touch recall | After confirming a station you want to hear again |
If your screen does not show AM, consult the vehicle’s manual for the exact source path. A missing button can reflect a different audio system, model specification, or regional configuration rather than a fault.
Use the owner’s manual efficiently
Search the manual for terms such as AM radio, radio source, band selection, scan, seek, tune, station list, and presets. The relevant instructions may be in the infotainment chapter rather than the section describing steering-wheel controls. If the vehicle has more than one audio system or trim level, match the illustrations and software version to the system installed in your car.
Manuals often describe several separate operations: scanning, refreshing a station list, saving all detected stations, saving one station, and entering a frequency. These are not interchangeable. A refresh may rebuild the list without saving a favorite; a long press on a preset may store the current frequency; and a scan may merely preview stations until you stop it. Follow the wording and on-screen confirmation for your specific receiver.
Scan versus manual tuning: choose the faster method
Automatic and manual methods solve different problems. Use the method that matches what you know about the station and how strong its signal is.

| Method | Best for | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scan | Discovering stations without knowing frequencies | Searches the band for signals the receiver recognizes and can preview them | May skip weak or noisy stations; the preview interval and sensitivity vary by system |
| Seek/Track | Moving quickly to the next detectable station | Faster than turning through the entire band one step at a time | Usually stops only where the receiver decides a signal is strong enough |
| Manual Tune | Finding a weak station or checking a specific part of the band | Lets you stop on frequencies automatic search overlooks | Requires more time and attention to the frequency display |
| Direct frequency entry | Listening to a station whose frequency you already know | Jumps straight to the target when the radio supports entry | Does not help if the frequency is unknown, changed, or not receivable at your location |
For a first search, select AM and try Scan or Seek. If you know a frequency, direct entry or manual tuning is more efficient. If Scan finds nothing but you know a local station should be operating, tune manually and verify the station’s operating conditions.
How to identify a station you found
A station can be identified by its spoken call sign, station name, network identification, or the frequency shown on the radio. Write down the call sign and frequency before saving a preset so you can locate it again after changing vehicles or resetting the infotainment system.
For U.S. stations, the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Inspection Files search accepts a call sign, network affiliation, channel number, or facility ID. This is useful for confirming licensing and station-identification information. It is not a personalized reception checker: a listing does not establish that the signal will reach your particular car at a particular moment.
When you know only the station name
Listen for the call sign or frequency during the station identification announcement, then search that identifier in the FCC database. If the station has more than one service or has changed operating conditions, use the frequency displayed by your radio together with the call sign to avoid confusing it with another outlet.
When you know only the frequency
Enter the frequency directly if your receiver offers that function. Otherwise, select AM and use the manual tuning controls until the display matches the known value. A frequency match alone does not prove that you are hearing the intended station, so confirm with the call sign or station name.

Why AM stations appear and disappear
AM reception depends on propagation, interference, terrain, electrical noise, and the station’s operating schedule. The most important predictable change is the difference between daytime and nighttime propagation.
Daytime groundwave service
The FCC explains that “During daytime hours, AM signals travel principally by conduction over the surface of the earth, known as ‘groundwave’ propagation.” In the same 2013 report, it says daytime AM signals are generally heard within a maximum radius of 100 miles even for the most powerful stations. That is a broad engineering description, not a guaranteed range for an individual station, road, or car. Read the full FCC report at FCC 13-139 (2013).
Nighttime skywave and interference
After dark, AM signals can reflect from the ionosphere and travel much farther. The added distance also increases the chance that stations using the same or nearby channels interfere with one another. The FCC notes that if stations kept daytime power levels at night, “significant ‘skywave’ interference to other AM stations would result.” To limit that interference, many stations reduce power—sometimes substantially—or stop broadcasting at night. As a result, a station that is clear in the afternoon may become noisy, weaker, or unavailable after sunset, while a distant station may become audible.
What a coverage contour can—and cannot—tell you
FCC contour maps show a broad area where service might be expected. The Commission cautions that a contour does not establish that every location inside it will receive an over-the-air signal. Buildings, hills, electrical equipment, weather-related conditions, vehicle antenna placement, and local interference can all affect the result. The FCC’s explanation of its public files and station information is available at FCC Public Inspection Files: About.

- Confirm the source. Make sure the radio is on AM, not FM, Bluetooth, satellite, or an auxiliary input.
- Check the frequency. Re-enter the number or use manual tuning. A small entry error can put you on an empty channel.
- Try outside the original location. If you are in a parking structure, beside large electrical equipment, or surrounded by dense buildings, move to an open area when safe.
- Try a different time. A station may reduce power or stop broadcasting at night, and interference can increase after sunset.
- Use the receiver’s list refresh. If the system has a station-list refresh or save-all command, run it after moving to a new area.
- Verify the station’s identity. Use its call sign or name and check the FCC public files search for the matching record.
- Compare with another AM receiver if one is safely available. If another receiver also cannot hear the station, the issue may be local reception or the station’s operating condition rather than your car’s controls.
These checks do not prove that the vehicle hardware is healthy or faulty. If no AM station works anywhere, follow the troubleshooting section in your owner’s manual or have a qualified vehicle-audio technician inspect the system. The station and FCC sources do not diagnose antenna, wiring, receiver, or speaker failures.
How to save stations for later
Once the correct station is playing, look for Favorites, Presets, or a save icon. Touch and hold the desired preset position if the system uses long-press saving; other systems provide a separate Save command. Because interfaces differ, use the on-screen prompt or owner’s manual rather than assuming that one press stores the station. Save the station only after confirming its call sign or name so a noisy adjacent signal is not stored by mistake.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that make AM searches seem unsuccessful
- Scanning the wrong band: FM, Bluetooth, and satellite sources can look similar to AM in a crowded source menu.
- Assuming Scan checks every frequency: automatic search normally stops at signals that meet the receiver’s detection threshold, so a weak station may require manual tuning.
- Confusing a list refresh with reception: rebuilding a station list does not make a marginal signal stronger.
- Trusting a map as a promise: a station’s licensed contour describes expected service broadly, not guaranteed reception on every street.
- Ignoring the time of day: nighttime power changes and skywave interference can alter which stations are usable.
- Saving before confirming identity: store a preset only after hearing the station name or call sign and checking the displayed frequency.
Safe use while driving
Program the station list, enter frequencies, and study unfamiliar menus while parked. Scanning and tuning can require several screen interactions, and searching for a station should never compete with steering, traffic observation, or navigation. If a passenger is present, let that person operate the controls; otherwise wait until you can pull over safely. Presets are preferable while moving because they reduce the time your eyes and hands leave the driving task.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Best first action | Next step if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| You do not know any local AM frequencies | Select AM and run Scan or Seek | Refresh the station list, then try manual tuning |
| You know the frequency | Use direct frequency entry if available | Set the frequency manually and listen for the station identification |
| Scan skips a station you expect | Tune manually through the relevant part of the band | Try an open location and another time of day |
| The station was clear earlier but is weak at night | Check for nighttime power or operating changes | Try again during daylight or use another available station |
| No AM station works at all | Confirm AM is selected and repeat a scan in an open area | Consult the vehicle manual or a qualified audio technician |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Scan stop on some AM stations but not others?
Scan and Seek generally stop only when the receiver detects a signal strong enough to meet its threshold. A weak or noisy station can be skipped, so use manual Tune or direct frequency entry instead.

Can I find an AM station by typing its frequency?
Yes, if your radio provides direct frequency entry. Otherwise select AM and use the manual tuning controls until the display reaches the known frequency, then confirm the station by its call sign or name.

Why was an AM station clear during the day but poor at night?
The FCC says daytime AM signals travel mainly by groundwave. After dark, ionospheric skywave propagation carries signals farther and can increase interference. Stations may also reduce power or stop broadcasting at night.
Does an FCC station listing prove my car should receive the station?
No. The FCC Public Inspection Files search confirms station information using identifiers such as call sign, network affiliation, channel number, or facility ID. It does not guarantee reception at your location or at a particular time.
Does being inside an FCC coverage contour guarantee reception?
No. The FCC describes contours as broad indications of expected service and cautions that they do not establish reception at every location inside the contour.
What should I do if my car does not show an AM option?
Check the owner’s manual for the exact Radio, Media, Source, or Band path. Screen appearance and available features can differ by model, specification, and regional configuration.
Should I refresh the station list after driving to a new area?
If your receiver offers Refresh station list, Scan all, or a similar command, run it after moving. A refreshed list reflects what the receiver detects there; it does not guarantee that every licensed station will be receivable.
What if no AM station works anywhere in my car?
Confirm that AM is selected, repeat a scan in an open area, and try manual tuning. If no station works, consult the vehicle manual or a qualified vehicle-audio technician; the station listings do not diagnose antenna, wiring, receiver, or speaker faults.
The Bottom Line
Select AM from your car’s Radio or Media source, then use Scan or Seek to discover stations. Use manual tuning or direct frequency entry when you know the frequency or automatic search skips a weak signal. Confirm the call sign or station name, save a preset, and remember that AM reception and station power can change between day and night. FCC listings and coverage contours help identify a station, but neither guarantees reception in your particular car.
