Start by defining the people, cargo, roads, weather, trips, charging access, and budget the vehicle must handle. Then compare gasoline cars, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs within the class that fits those requirements, using EPA data for the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and wheel configuration.
1. Define what the car must do before looking at MPG
Efficiency is useful only after a vehicle can perform your normal jobs. Write down your requirements before searching listings or visiting dealers. This prevents a high-rated small car from winning on paper when it cannot carry your family, equipment, or luggage.

Passengers and cargo
- Count the usual passengers and the maximum number you regularly carry.
- List car seats, strollers, sports equipment, pets, work tools, and other cargo that must fit at the same time.
- Decide whether you need a sedan, hatchback, wagon, crossover, minivan, pickup, or another body style.
- Check whether a smaller vehicle could meet the need. EPA recommends considering a smaller vehicle when it is practical, because size and weight strongly affect energy use.
Trips and roads
- Record your typical daily mileage and your longest regular trip.
- Estimate the share of city streets, stop-and-go traffic, rural roads, and highway driving.
- Note steep grades, unpaved roads, winter conditions, flood-prone routes, and any roads that require extra ground clearance.
- Identify whether you tow, carry roof loads, transport heavy equipment, or make frequent long-distance trips.
Ownership constraints
- Set a purchase or lease limit, including taxes, registration, insurance, and financing.
- Decide whether you can charge at home, at work, or at dependable public locations.
- Consider whether you need all-wheel drive, a spare tire, a particular seating position, or a maximum vehicle length for your parking space.
- Include used vehicles in your search. A used, efficient car that fits your needs can cost less overall than a new car with a higher rating.
Separate non-negotiables from preferences. A requirement such as seven seats or a 300-mile highway journey should eliminate unsuitable vehicles before you optimize the last few MPG.

2. Choose the vehicle class and powertrain
Compare vehicles that solve the same transportation problem. A fuel-saving compact hatchback, a hybrid crossover, a plug-in hybrid, and an electric pickup do not serve identical use cases, even if their labels all display efficiency figures.

| Powertrain | How it operates | Best fit | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | Uses an internal-combustion engine and liquid fuel. | Drivers who need quick refueling, broad model choice, or frequent long trips without charging stops. | Combined MPG, city/highway pattern, fuel-tank range, maintenance, and towing limits. |
| Non-plug-in hybrid | Combines an engine with electric assistance; the battery is replenished through regenerative braking and the engine. | Mixed city and highway driving when home charging is unavailable. | Combined MPG, usable cargo space, warranty terms, and whether the hybrid system changes towing or payload. |
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | Can drive on stored electricity and then operate as a gasoline hybrid after the charge is depleted. | Daily trips that fit within electric range plus occasional long journeys. | Electric-mode MPGe, gasoline-mode MPG, electric range, charging time, and access to a dependable outlet. |
| Battery electric vehicle (EV) | Uses electricity stored in a traction battery and has no gasoline engine. | Drivers whose daily and long-trip patterns fit available range and charging. | EPA range, charging speed and locations, cold-weather performance, highway energy use, and purchase cost. |
Do not select a powertrain solely because its headline number is highest. A vehicle that cannot complete your trips, carry your load, or recharge where you park is not efficient in practical use.
3. Compare official figures for the exact vehicle
Use the EPA Fuel Economy and Environment Label and the comparison tools at fueleconomy.gov. Search the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and wheel size. A different wheel or tire package, all-wheel-drive system, body style, or engine can change the certified result.
Understand the numbers
- Combined MPG: the main comparison figure for gasoline and non-plug-in hybrid vehicles. It blends city and highway test results.
- City and highway MPG: useful when your driving is heavily concentrated in one environment. Neither is a promise of what every driver will achieve.
- MPGe: an energy-equivalent measure that allows electricity and gasoline use to be displayed on a common scale. It is not the same as miles per gallon of gasoline.
- PHEV electric-mode MPGe and gasoline-mode MPG: separate figures show operation while using electricity and after the vehicle relies on gasoline.
- EV and PHEV range: the certified distance under EPA test conditions. Check the label for charging-time information where provided.
The revised EPA label includes both fuel-economy and consumption information for all vehicle types. Consumption can be more useful than MPG because it shows how much energy is needed to travel a set distance; MPG gains are not linear. For example, improving from 15 to 20 MPG saves more fuel per mile than improving from 35 to 40 MPG.

Compare a compact sedan with other compact sedans or similarly sized hatchbacks before comparing it with a large SUV. A larger vehicle may have a lower rating but still be the most efficient choice that provides the required passenger room, cargo volume, towing ability, or ground clearance.
4. Turn the EPA estimate into your own annual cost
The label’s annual fuel-cost and five-year comparison figures are standardized estimates, not personal quotes. EPA’s default annual-cost estimate assumes 15,000 miles per year and projected fuel prices. Your mileage, local prices, traffic, weather, and driving style can produce a different result.

A simple gasoline calculation
For a gasoline vehicle, estimate annual fuel use as:
annual gallons = annual miles ÷ combined MPG
Then calculate:
annual fuel cost = annual gallons × your local price per gallon
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the same annual mileage and local price for every candidate. If one vehicle is driven mostly in city traffic and another mostly on the highway, use a realistic weighted result rather than comparing a city rating with a highway rating.
Electricity and PHEV calculations
For an EV, use the vehicle’s energy-consumption figure, your annual miles, and your electricity rate. Include charging losses and different rates when you rely on public charging. A PHEV requires two scenarios: estimate the share of miles completed electrically, then calculate gasoline use for the remaining miles using the gasoline-mode MPG. If you rarely plug in, its real fuel use may resemble a conventional hybrid rather than its headline electric-mode result.
Compare total ownership cost, not just energy
- Purchase or lease price, financing, taxes, registration, and insurance.
- Scheduled maintenance, tires, brakes, and likely repair exposure for an older used vehicle.
- Home-charging installation or public-charging fees for a plug-in.
- Available federal, state, local, utility, or manufacturer incentives, checking current eligibility in your location and model year.
- Expected resale value and how long you plan to keep the vehicle.
No universal savings figure applies to every buyer. The benefit of a more efficient vehicle depends on miles driven, energy prices, purchase-price difference, incentives, and maintenance.

5. Decide whether an EV or PHEV fits your charging reality
Home and workplace access
An EV can work well when you can charge where it is parked for several hours. EPA says most EVs can charge from a standard 120-volt outlet, while a dedicated 240-volt system charges faster. Confirm that the outlet, circuit, installation, and parking arrangement are safe and permitted before relying on them.
Ask how often you can charge, who controls the outlet, whether other residents share it, and what happens when it is occupied or unavailable. A dependable workplace or public option can supplement home charging, but a plan based on a single unreliable station is a risk.
Match range to the hardest regular trip
Compare certified range with your longest normal journey, not merely your average commute. Leave a reserve for detours, traffic, weather, hills, and the need to reach a charger. EPA notes that an EV’s travel distance before recharging is often less than a gasoline car’s refueling distance, but is typically enough for the average person’s daily driving.
Account for conditions that reduce range
- Cold temperatures can reduce battery performance and increase cabin-heating demand.
- High speeds generally consume more energy than steady lower-speed driving.
- Heating, air conditioning, lights, defrosters, and other accessories use energy.
- Passengers, cargo, roof equipment, hills, wind, wet roads, and tire condition affect consumption.
For PHEVs, ask the same charging questions, then confirm that gasoline refueling remains convenient for long trips. Their labels provide distinct electric and gasoline operating figures; do not combine them into one number without considering how often you will plug in.
6. Use SmartWay and emissions ratings as a second filter
After a vehicle meets your practical requirements, use EPA’s SmartWay search and the emissions information on the label to identify cleaner choices. SmartWay identifies the 20% of lowest-emitting passenger vehicles in each model year, based on greenhouse-gas and smog ratings.

This is a screening tool, not a substitute for size, capability, range, or cost analysis. Tailpipe greenhouse-gas and smog ratings are different from a full lifecycle assessment. EPA’s label greenhouse-gas rating is based on tailpipe carbon dioxide and does not include emissions from producing the fuel or electricity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Build a short list that survives real-world checks
- Create the requirement sheet. Enter passenger count, cargo, daily and longest trips, road conditions, weather, towing, charging access, and maximum budget.
- Choose two or three suitable classes. For example, you might compare a compact hybrid hatchback with a small hybrid crossover if both meet your cargo needs.
- Filter by powertrain. Keep gasoline, hybrid, PHEV, and EV candidates only when their refueling or charging patterns fit your routine.
- Record exact EPA data. Save model year, trim, drivetrain, wheels, combined MPG or MPGe, range, charging time, and label assumptions.
- Calculate personal energy cost. Use your annual miles and local gasoline or electricity prices rather than the label’s default assumptions.
- Verify physical fit. Test car seats, cargo, seating positions, garage clearance, visibility, and loading height.
- Check capability and service. Confirm payload, towing, winter equipment, tire availability, warranty coverage, and nearby service options.
- Price the complete transaction. Include taxes, fees, financing, charging work, insurance, maintenance, incentives, and expected ownership period.
- Recheck current details. Model-year ratings, trims, prices, incentives, charging networks, and local energy rates change. Verify them for your market before signing.
8. Avoid common comparison mistakes
Choosing the biggest MPG number
A rating from a smaller vehicle may look superior but become irrelevant if you must rent a larger vehicle for trips, overload the car, or make frequent charging stops that your schedule cannot accommodate.
Treating the label as a guarantee
EPA estimates are intended for comparison. Actual economy and range vary with maintenance, driving behavior, load, road conditions, weather, speed, and accessories. Use the figures to rank candidates under consistent conditions, not to promise an exact result.
Assuming MPGe equals fuel cost
MPGe provides an energy-equivalent comparison. Your cost depends on the price of gasoline, electricity, charging losses, time-of-use rates, and where you charge.

Counting incentives before confirming eligibility
Incentives can depend on income, vehicle price, battery sourcing, purchase date, location, ownership structure, and model-year rules. Treat them as conditional until the relevant agency, utility, or seller confirms eligibility.
9. A practical decision framework
Use this sequence when two or more candidates remain:
| Question | Decision rule |
|---|---|
| Does it carry people and cargo safely? | Reject any vehicle that fails a non-negotiable space, seating, payload, or towing requirement. |
| Can it complete normal trips? | For an EV or PHEV, compare usable range and charging opportunities with the longest regular trip and a weather reserve. |
| Which candidate is efficient in your driving mix? | Use the appropriate EPA city, highway, combined, MPGe, and range figures for the exact configuration. |
| What will energy cost you? | Apply your annual miles and local fuel or electricity prices consistently. |
| What is the complete ownership cost? | Add purchase, financing, insurance, maintenance, charging, incentives, and expected ownership length. |
| Which cleaner option still fits? | Use SmartWay and label emissions ratings after practical and financial requirements are satisfied. |
10. What to remember about EPA estimates
EPA testing creates a consistent basis for comparing vehicles, but it cannot reproduce every route or climate. Cold conditions, high-speed travel, accessories, heavy loads, road surface, traffic, and driving style can all change results. EV range can fall significantly when conditions increase energy demand.
