The real cost of a full-size pickup is the total you spend to buy, finance, operate, insure, maintain, and eventually sell it—not the sticker price or monthly payment. Choose a holding period and mileage, then add depreciation, loan interest, fuel, insurance, taxes and fees, maintenance, repairs, and tires. Divide that total by years, months, or miles to compare trucks on equal terms.
What counts as the total cost of owning a full-size truck?
Use an economic ownership-cost calculation for decisions such as choosing between two trucks or deciding whether a new truck fits your budget. The basic formula is:

Set the same ownership period and expected mileage for every truck you compare. A five-year, 75,000-mile comparison is common in published studies, but your own plan may be three years and 45,000 miles, or 10 years and 150,000 miles. The result is useful only when the assumptions are stated beside it.

Do not add loan principal to that economic total when depreciation is calculated as purchase price minus resale value. Principal repays the asset you own; interest is the cost of borrowing. For a household cash-flow budget, show the down payment and the complete loan payment separately, because cash leaving your account and economic cost are different views of ownership.
Step 1: Fix the period, miles, and truck specification
Write down the exact vehicle before entering any figures. A full-size pickup can have materially different costs depending on cab, bed, engine, transmission, 2WD or 4WD, axle ratio, trim, tire size, and equipment. Record whether it is gasoline or diesel and whether you will tow, haul, idle, or drive off-road.
Choose a holding period
Use the number of years until you expect to sell or trade the truck. Include the month you expect the transaction to occur, because a truck kept for 60 months has a different interest and depreciation pattern from one kept for 48 months.
Estimate your mileage
Start with annual personal and work miles, then multiply by the planned years. Separate commuting, highway trips, stop-and-go driving, towing, idling, and off-road work. A truck that travels 12,000 unloaded highway miles does not consume fuel or tires like one that travels 12,000 miles while towing.
Hold assumptions constant when comparing trucks
- Use the same years and total miles.
- Use the same driver, address, coverage, deductibles, and insurance limits.
- Use the same purchase date and local tax rules.
- Use the same down payment and loan term unless financing itself is the variable being tested.
- Use realistic fuel economy for each exact configuration, not a generic model-line rating.
The six cost categories
1. Depreciation
Depreciation is usually the largest cost that buyers overlook. Calculate it as the negotiated vehicle price plus relevant acquisition costs, minus the amount you expect to receive when you sell or trade:
Depreciation = purchase price and acquisition costs − expected resale or trade-in value
Use the price you can actually negotiate, after discounts and incentives, rather than the window sticker. Estimate the ending value for the same age, mileage, condition, drivetrain, and equipment. A high resale estimate lowers calculated cost; a low estimate raises it. Because resale values are uncertain, create low, middle, and high cases instead of treating one forecast as guaranteed.

For a used truck, begin with its current transaction price and estimate its value at the end of your own holding period. Do not apply a new-truck depreciation benchmark to a used vehicle without adjustment. If you are evaluating a particular used truck, include a pre-purchase inspection as a separate expense; no universal inspection price applies.
2. Financing interest
Interest is the borrowing cost and belongs in ownership cost. Obtain the lender’s annual percentage rate, amount financed, loan term, required fees, and payment schedule. Sum the interest charged during the months you will own the truck. If you sell before the loan ends, use the actual payoff balance to model the cash transaction, but do not count principal again in the economic-cost total.
For cash-flow planning, display these items in separate rows:
- Down payment at purchase.
- Monthly principal-and-interest payment.
- Interest paid during your holding period.
- Loan payoff balance when you sell or trade.
Keeping vehicle price, finance rate, and trade-in value as separate negotiations follows AAA buying advice and prevents a low payment from hiding a high price, long term, or unfavorable trade value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Fuel
Fuel cost is mileage divided by realistic fuel economy, multiplied by your expected average price:
Fuel cost = miles ÷ real-world miles per gallon × average price per gallon
Use gasoline or diesel pricing that matches the truck. Adjust economy for engine and trim, 2WD or 4WD, tires, payload, towing, idling, weather, terrain, and city/highway mix. The number on a window label is a useful starting point, not a promise of your consumption.

AAA’s calculator allows a city/highway split and a fuel-price adjustment. It describes 55% city and 45% highway as its default mix, based on EPA fuel-economy estimates, and permits annual-mileage choices of 10,000, 15,000, or 20,000 miles. Replace those defaults with your own use whenever possible.

Request a quote for the exact truck, garaging address, drivers, annual mileage, business or personal use, liability limits, comprehensive and collision coverage, and deductibles. A quote for a different trim or driver can make a comparison misleading.
AAA’s 2025 insurance estimate assumes full coverage for personal use, a driver under 65, more than six years of driving experience, no accidents, and a suburban or city location. That profile is not universal. Treat any generalized figure as a benchmark, not as your premium.
5. Taxes and government fees
Include sales or excise tax and purchase fees that apply where you register the truck. Add registration, inspection, property, wheelage, or other recurring charges required by your jurisdiction during the ownership period. Some fees are paid once and others recur annually; list them by date so a short holding period does not accidentally receive a full long-term allowance.
6. Maintenance, repairs, and tires
Budget scheduled service from the truck’s maintenance manual, including oil and filter changes, fluid service, inspections, brake work, and other mileage-based items. Add wear items such as brakes, wiper blades, batteries, and alignment where relevant. Estimate replacement tires based on the truck’s tire size, load range, driving surface, towing, and expected miles.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep routine maintenance, unexpected repairs, and tires in distinct rows. A newer truck may have lower repair exposure but more expensive tires or dealer service; an older truck may reverse that pattern. Include towing, accessories, or work equipment only when they are part of your actual ownership decision, and do not hide them in a generic maintenance allowance.

- Define use: enter ownership years, total miles, city/highway split, towing and payload duty, fuel type, and expected sale date.
- Enter acquisition cost: record negotiated price, mandatory purchase fees, taxes, and any financed add-ons. Exclude optional accessories unless you will buy them.
- Estimate ending value: enter a realistic resale or trade-in value at the planned age and mileage. Add low and high cases if the estimate is uncertain.
- Calculate depreciation: subtract ending value from acquisition cost.
- Enter financing: record down payment, amount financed, APR, term, and total interest through the planned sale date.
- Calculate fuel: divide expected miles by realistic miles per gallon and multiply by the local average price for the relevant fuel.
- Obtain insurance: replace generic assumptions with a written quote for the same driver and coverage on every truck.
- Add taxes and recurring fees: list one-time and annual charges for the registration location.
- Build the service budget: enter scheduled maintenance, likely repairs, tires, and any use-specific work separately.
- Sum the six categories: retain the assumptions next to the total so another person can audit the comparison.
- Normalize the result: divide the total by years for annual cost, by 12 times years for average monthly cost, and by total miles for cost per mile.
For a cash-flow view, create a second schedule showing the down payment, each monthly payment, fuel and insurance bills, service invoices, taxes, and the loan payoff. That schedule answers whether you can afford the truck month by month; the six-category total answers which truck consumes more value over the ownership period.
How to compare two full-size pickups fairly
Put both vehicles in the same worksheet and change only the variables that genuinely differ. A lower-fuel-use trim can still cost more overall if its purchase price, interest, insurance, depreciation, or tires are higher.
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison input | What to enter | Why it can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Negotiated price after incentives and required acquisition costs | A higher starting price increases depreciation and often the amount financed. |
| Ending value | Expected sale or trade value at identical age and mileage | Resale differences can outweigh fuel savings. |
| Financing | APR, term, down payment, fees, and interest through sale | Lender offers and loan length alter borrowing cost. |
| Fuel | Fuel type, realistic economy, miles, and local price | Towing, idling, tires, and drivetrain can change consumption. |
| Insurance | Quote for the same driver, address, limits, and deductibles | Repair cost and vehicle value affect premiums. |
| Taxes and fees | Purchase tax, registration, inspections, and recurring charges | Rules vary by jurisdiction and ownership length. |
| Service and wear | Scheduled work, repairs, tires, brakes, and use-specific items | Duty cycle and tire size create large operating differences. |
Run a sensitivity check on the assumptions most likely to move the decision: resale value, fuel price, annual miles, interest rate, and repair exposure. If the same truck wins in every reasonable case, the decision is robust. If the ranking changes, treat the result as a trade-off rather than a single precise answer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What published ownership-cost figures can—and cannot—tell you
Published studies provide context, not a personalized quote. AAA’s 2026 Your Driving Costs analysis reported an average new-vehicle ownership and operating cost of $12,863 per year, or $1,071.92 per month. It evaluated seven categories across 34 top-selling models. That is a fleetwide average, not a full-size-pickup total.
In the same 2026 analysis, AAA reported $1.10 per mile for ½-ton pickups. AAA described that as 48 cents per mile more than small sedans and an average annual difference of $7,191. Keep the ½-ton classification and 2026 year attached: the figure is a study result, not an insurance quote or prediction for your truck.
AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs fact sheet reported 98.54 cents per mile for half-ton pickups and 79.11 cents per mile for mid-size pickups. Those categories are not interchangeable; use the half-ton comparison only when it matches the truck you are evaluating. The 2025 fact sheet’s fuel estimate was 13 cents per mile, using a 12-month period ending in May 2025 and regular gasoline averaging $3.151 per gallon. That is dated study input, not today’s pump price.
AAA’s 2026 study used gasoline at $4.152 per gallon and home electricity at 18.0 cents per kilowatt-hour at the time of its analysis. Use current local prices in your worksheet instead of copying those values. AAA says its 2026 methodology was updated, so its overall result is not directly comparable with its 2025 estimate; a year-over-year difference cannot be attributed solely to a change in actual vehicle costs.

AAA reported $4,422 in weighted-average annual depreciation in 2026 and said depreciation remained the largest category in its overall study. That is an all-vehicle weighted average, not a pickup-specific allowance.
The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center presents a modeled scenario totaling $92,978 over the model lifetime, or $0.5608 per mile, for a 2025-model gasoline pickup. Its table separates vehicle, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repair, and taxes or fees. It is a scenario built from its own assumptions, not a quote for a current buyer.
AAA’s calculator estimates five years of ownership followed by trade-in and allows changes for state, annual mileage, city/highway mix, vehicle year, make, model, trim, and fuel or electricity price. AAA describes the results as generalized and says actual costs vary. Use the calculator as a starting point, then replace its defaults with your negotiated price, lender offer, insurance quote, local fees, fuel price, and resale estimate.

A lender’s payment includes principal and interest, while ownership cost includes depreciation and operating expenses. They answer different questions.
| Measure | Formula | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Economic cost per year | Total six-category cost ÷ ownership years | Comparing trucks over the planned holding period. |
| Economic cost per month | Total six-category cost ÷ (ownership years × 12) | Turning a long-term comparison into a monthly equivalent. |
| Economic cost per mile | Total six-category cost ÷ expected miles | Comparing vehicles when annual mileage differs, provided you also show the assumptions. |
| Cash-flow payment | Down payment plus scheduled payments, fuel, insurance, fees, and bills | Checking whether the truck fits your monthly budget. |
Do not call the economic monthly figure your loan payment. A truck can have a low payment because the term is long or the down payment is large while still carrying high depreciation, insurance, fuel, or repair costs.
New versus used full-size pickups
New truck
For a new truck, use the negotiated transaction price, the exact financing offer, and a resale estimate at the end of your planned period. Include the first registration and purchase taxes, then follow the manufacturer’s service schedule. A new vehicle may have a more predictable maintenance plan, but depreciation in the early years can dominate the total.
Used truck
For a used truck, start depreciation at today’s purchase price and forecast the value after your own years and miles. Inspect the vehicle before purchase and account for condition, accident history, tires, brakes, rust, previous towing, and maintenance records. Research-specific new-vehicle averages do not establish the cost of a particular used truck, so your worksheet should rely on its actual condition and transaction price.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using the sticker price: replace it with the negotiated out-the-door amount, including mandatory acquisition costs.
- Comparing monthly payments: compare total interest, depreciation, and operating costs over identical years and miles.
- Counting principal twice: include either asset depreciation in the economic total or a cash-flow schedule with principal repayment; do not add all principal to depreciation.
- Using a generic insurance number: obtain matching quotes for the exact truck and driver.
- Assuming laboratory fuel economy: adjust for towing, payload, idling, tires, drivetrain, weather, and traffic.
- Leaving out tires and repairs: create separate reserves for scheduled service, unexpected repairs, and tire replacement.
- Applying a new-truck resale curve to a used truck: forecast from the used truck’s current price, age, mileage, and condition.
- Mixing study years: keep AAA’s 2025 figures labeled as 2025 and its 2026 figures labeled as 2026; the methodologies differ.
- Treating national averages as personal quotes: replace generalized study inputs with local prices, fees, insurance, financing, and resale evidence.
- Ignoring work use: add the fuel, tire, service, and repair effects of towing, payload, idling, or off-road travel.
A practical decision rule
Choose the truck with the lower total under the use case you actually have, not the truck with the lowest sticker price, payment, or fuel figure in isolation. Keep a written record of the purchase price, financing, fuel assumptions, insurance quote, local fees, maintenance plan, tire allowance, and resale estimate. Then run at least one conservative case with higher fuel and repair costs or a lower resale value. If the result still fits your budget and the truck meets your payload and towing requirements, the estimate is strong enough to support a purchase decision.
