The real cost of a vehicle is what you spend to acquire, finance, use, insure, maintain and eventually sell it—not the window sticker or fuel-economy rating alone. A fair estimate uses the same ownership period, mileage, location and financing assumptions for every vehicle, then reports both the total and the cost per month or mile.
Use this formula as your starting point: ownership cost = acquisition cost + financing cost + energy + insurance + taxes and fees + maintenance, repairs and tires − resale value. Keep purchase cash flow and economic cost clearly separated so you do not count a loan principal payment twice.

What “real cost to own” includes
A vehicle can look inexpensive to run while being expensive to own. Depreciation, interest, insurance and registration can outweigh fuel or electricity savings. Conversely, a higher-priced vehicle may retain more value or cost less to operate. The estimate is meaningful only when every major cost is visible.
Recommended Free Tools
- Acquisition: negotiated transaction price, destination and dealer charges, sales tax, title and registration due at purchase, and other mandatory purchase fees.
- Financing: interest and loan fees over the selected term. A cash buyer should show the cash outlay separately from financing charges.
- Depreciation: purchase value minus expected resale or trade-in value at the end of the horizon.
- Energy: gasoline, diesel, or electricity consumed for the miles you expect to drive.
- Insurance: a quote for the actual driver, address, coverage limits and vehicle.
- Taxes and recurring fees: registration, inspection, local taxes and any powertrain-specific charges that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Maintenance, repairs and tires: scheduled service plus wear items and a reserve for unscheduled repairs.
- Resale value: the projected sale or trade-in proceeds, deducted because they offset your cost of ownership.
Decide whether your worksheet is a cash-flow budget or an economic ownership-cost estimate. A cash-flow budget shows when money leaves your account, including down payment and loan principal. An economic estimate counts the vehicle’s purchase value and financing cost, then subtracts resale value; it does not also treat every dollar of principal as a second expense.

Choose a fair comparison before entering numbers
Set one ownership horizon
Pick the period that matches your plan: three years for a lease-like decision, five years for a common replacement cycle, or another period you can defend. A five-year result is not a rule that every driver keeps a car for five years. Longer horizons usually increase accumulated maintenance and reduce the annual effect of one-time purchase fees, while shorter horizons make depreciation and transaction costs especially important.
Use the same mileage for every candidate
Estimate annual miles from your commute, errands, trips and seasonal use. Multiply by the number of years to obtain total miles. Use that same mileage for an EV, hybrid, SUV and sedan comparison; otherwise, a vehicle assigned fewer miles will appear artificially cheap. Also record the city/highway mix because fuel economy and electric consumption differ by driving pattern.
Hold location and financing method constant
Use one state or locality, one set of tax assumptions and the same loan term, interest rate and down-payment method for every vehicle. If you are comparing a cash purchase with a financed purchase, present separate scenarios rather than mixing them into one ranking. Insurance and electricity prices can vary dramatically by address, so a national average is only a placeholder until you obtain local inputs.

Compare a compact sedan with other compact sedans, a midsize SUV with similar midsize SUVs, and so on. If you compare vehicle classes as well as powertrains, label both differences. A large electric SUV may cost more than a small gasoline sedan because of size, equipment and depreciation—not simply because it is electric.
Build the ownership-cost worksheet
1. Record the actual acquisition cost
Start with the transaction price you can realistically pay, not the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Add destination charges, dealer fees, sales or use tax, title, registration due at purchase and required equipment. Subtract discounts or incentives only when you are eligible and know whether they reduce the purchase price, tax bill or financing balance.
Record the down payment and loan amount separately. For a financed vehicle, list the annual percentage rate, term and total scheduled interest. For a cash purchase, record the full cash outlay but set financing cost to zero. If you trade in a vehicle, show the trade allowance and any remaining loan balance rather than treating the allowance as free money.
2. Estimate depreciation and resale
Depreciation is usually the largest ownership category. Estimate the vehicle’s value at the end of your chosen period, then calculate:

Depreciation = acquisition value − expected resale or trade-in value.
Residual value is a projection, not a guaranteed sale price. Use a valuation source that matches the vehicle’s trim, mileage, condition, accident history and local market. Run a low, middle and high resale case; a ten-point change in residual value can alter the ranking more than a modest difference in fuel cost.
AAA defines depreciation as the difference between purchase price and eventual sale or trade-in value in its ownership-cost calculator. That treatment is useful for comparison, but it remains an estimate rather than a promise of what a dealer or private buyer will pay.
3. Calculate energy for each powertrain
For a gasoline or hybrid vehicle, use expected miles, realistic fuel economy and your local fuel price:
Fuel cost = annual miles ÷ real-world miles per gallon × price per gallon × years.
Use combined, city or highway efficiency that resembles your driving rather than the most favorable laboratory figure. Include seasonal idling, towing, roof loads and traffic if they are part of your use.
For an EV, use energy consumption in kilowatt-hours per mile and the effective charging price:

Electricity cost = annual miles × kWh per mile × charging price × years.
Separate home charging from public charging when both are material. Home charging may use a utility rate, time-of-use schedule or a demand-related tariff; public charging can have per-kWh, per-minute, session or parking charges. Include charging losses if your consumption figure does not already account for them. If you install a charger, put the equipment and electrical-work cost in acquisition or a separate infrastructure line, then state whether an incentive reduces that cost.
AAA reported a study-era average home-charging electricity price of 18.0 cents per kWh and regular gasoline at $4.152 per gallon in its 2026 release. Those are inputs from that study, not current or universal prices for every household. Your utility bill and local fuel price are better inputs.
4. Get an insurance estimate for the real driver
Request a quote for the exact vehicle, trim, address, drivers, mileage, coverage limits, deductibles and discounts. Insurance can differ because of repair costs, theft rates, safety equipment, driver history and claims experience. A generic national average can be far from your premium. The IEA’s total-cost tool asks the user to enter an insurance estimate for this reason: premiums vary by person and technology.
5. Add taxes and recurring fees
List annual registration and inspection charges, local property or excise taxes where applicable, and any EV or hybrid road-use fee. State policies change, so identify the jurisdiction and effective date of each figure. Do not assume an EV has no fuel-related tax replacement or that every state applies the same fee.

6. Budget maintenance, repairs and tires
Separate scheduled maintenance from an unexpected-repair reserve. Include oil and filter service for a gasoline or hybrid engine, brake-fluid or coolant service where specified, inspections, wiper blades, cabin and engine filters, tires, alignments and seasonal equipment. EVs generally have fewer engine-related services, but they still need tires, suspension work, brakes, HVAC service and repairs after the warranty period.
Use the maintenance schedule for the exact year, make, model and powertrain. Add a realistic repair reserve rather than assuming the warranty covers the entire ownership period. Tire replacement deserves its own line because vehicle weight, wheel size, alignment and driving style can make it a significant cost.

Choose one accounting method and avoid double-counting
Economic ownership cost
For a purchase-and-resale comparison, count the vehicle’s acquisition value, financing charges, operating costs and fees, then subtract expected resale value. Down payment and principal are payment mechanics, not additional costs on top of the purchase value. This method answers, “How much value will this vehicle consume over the period?”
Cash-flow budget
For household budgeting, show down payment, monthly principal and interest, energy, insurance, fees and maintenance as cash leaving your account. At the end, show the expected sale proceeds as a cash inflow. Do not add the full purchase price to this view unless you also remove the principal payments and clearly explain the timing.
Whichever method you choose, label it at the top of the worksheet and apply it consistently to every candidate.
A repeatable step-by-step process
- Define the scenario. Write the state or country, ownership years, annual miles, city/highway mix, purchase date and whether the comparison is cash or financed.
- Select comparable vehicles. Match body size, seating, cargo needs and equipment before comparing EV, hybrid and gasoline powertrains.
- Collect transaction prices. Use written dealer or seller quotes and record taxes, mandatory fees, incentives and trade-in treatment.
- Enter financing terms. Record down payment, amount financed, APR, term and total interest; keep principal from being counted twice.
- Set resale scenarios. Estimate end-of-period value for low, middle and high cases using comparable mileage and condition.
- Calculate energy. Use realistic fuel economy or kWh-per-mile, your annual miles, local prices and the home/public charging split.
- Obtain insurance quotes. Quote each exact vehicle for the same driver, address, coverage and deductible.
- Add fees and upkeep. Include recurring registration, inspections, maintenance, tires and an unexpected-repair reserve.
- Sum each category. Show acquisition, finance, depreciation, energy, insurance, fees and upkeep separately before calculating the total.
- Report useful views. Divide the period total by months and total miles, and show low/middle/high scenarios for uncertain inputs.
- Test sensitivity. Change mileage, fuel or electricity price, interest rate, insurance and resale value one at a time to see what actually changes the decision.

AAA’s September 15, 2026 release estimated that the average annual cost to own and operate a new vehicle was $12,863, or $1,071.92 per month. The study used a five-year, 75,000-mile design, covered seven vehicle categories and 34 top-selling models, and was not a personalized quote. AAA says actual costs vary with driving habits, location, operating conditions and other factors. Methodology updates mean the 2026 result is not directly comparable with the prior year’s estimate.
| AAA 2026 figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| $12,863 per year | Average annual ownership and operating cost for the study’s new-vehicle sample and assumptions. |
| $1,071.92 per month | The same annual average expressed monthly; it is not a payment quote for your vehicle. |
| $4,422 per year | Weighted-average annual depreciation reported in the release. |
| $4.152 per gallon | Regular gasoline average used at the time of the study. |
| 18.0 cents per kWh | Average home-charging electricity price used in the release’s account of the study. |
| 31.8% increase | AAA’s reported increase in gas prices compared with 2025 at the time of the study. |
| 7.8% increase | AAA’s reported increase in electricity prices compared with 2025 at the time of the study. |
AAA also published a smaller analysis comparing selected EV and hybrid models with gasoline models in four categories. AAA cautions that this selected EV/hybrid analysis should not be directly compared with the full study’s overall result. Treat each result as evidence under its own sample and method, not as a universal ranking of every EV, hybrid, SUV or sedan.
“By looking at EVs, hybrids and traditional gas-powered vehicles within the same categories, consumers can better understand how total ownership costs vary by powertrain,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of automotive engineering. “Looking at the full ownership picture—including depreciation and other expenses—can help consumers better understand the total cost of each option.”

How EV, hybrid, SUV and sedan costs commonly diverge
EV versus hybrid
An EV can reduce energy and some scheduled-service costs, but the result depends on purchase price, incentives, charging access, insurance, tires, financing and resale value. A hybrid may have a lower acquisition cost or stronger resale in a particular market while still using gasoline. Compare the complete categories rather than assuming electricity savings decide the outcome.
EV versus gasoline vehicle
Home charging and high annual mileage can improve an EV’s operating-cost position, while frequent public charging, a high electricity tariff or a short ownership period can reduce that advantage. Include charger installation, charging losses and the value of your time or parking fees when they are material to your routine.
SUV versus sedan
An SUV may cost more to buy, insure, fuel and equip with tires, but it can meet cargo, towing or seating needs that a sedan cannot. Compare vehicles that perform the same job. If the SUV is larger or more powerful, identify those differences instead of attributing every dollar to its powertrain.

Report at least four numbers for each candidate: total cost over the chosen period, average monthly cost, cost per mile and the category breakdown. Put assumptions beside the numbers, including purchase date, location, miles, energy prices, financing, insurance source and resale scenario.
Then examine the break-even conditions. For example, calculate how many miles per year an EV would need to recover a higher acquisition cost through energy and maintenance savings, or how much resale value would have to fall for a hybrid to lose its advantage. A sensitivity table is more honest than a single precise-looking total when prices and residual values are uncertain.
| Question | Input that answers it |
|---|---|
| What will this vehicle cost me over my planned ownership period? | Total acquisition, financing, energy, insurance, fees and upkeep minus resale. |
| How much does it cost each month? | Period total divided by the number of ownership months, with the accounting method stated. |
| How much does each mile cost? | Period total divided by total miles driven. |
| Which assumption matters most? | Change one input at a time and observe the change in the total. |
| Is the comparison fair? | Confirm identical horizon, mileage, location, vehicle-use category and financing approach. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using sticker price only: replace it with your transaction price, taxes, fees and financing terms.
- Assuming fuel economy equals ownership cost: add depreciation, insurance, financing, fees, maintenance and resale.
- Using one generic insurance number: obtain quotes for the actual driver and exact trim.
- Ignoring public charging: split home and public charging and include installation or session costs when relevant.
- Counting loan principal twice: choose cash-flow or economic accounting and label it.
- Treating depreciation as certain: use a range of resale outcomes and state that residual value is projected.
- Comparing unlike vehicles: match size, cargo, seating and capability before assigning the difference to powertrain.
- Calling maintenance the entire repair budget: add tires and an unexpected-repair reserve.
- Applying a national benchmark to one household: replace study averages with local prices, quotes and fees.
- Mixing dates: attach the date and geography to fuel, electricity, insurance, tax and resale inputs.
The practical bottom line
A trustworthy EV, hybrid, SUV or sedan comparison is a transparent worksheet, not a single fuel-economy claim. Use your miles, location, financing, insurance and intended ownership period; show depreciation and resale alongside energy and maintenance; and publish both the total and per-mile or monthly views. Calculators from AAA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the International Energy Agency can organize the estimate, but your own quotes and assumptions determine whether the result reflects your household.
