Your energy cost is determined by kilometres driven, the car’s consumption in kWh/100 km, where you charge, the applicable emirate tariff and, in Dubai, your household’s total electricity usage. Insurance, servicing, tyres, registration and the home charger must then be added separately.
Use this calculation: monthly battery energy (kWh) = monthly distance (km) × vehicle consumption (kWh/100 km) ÷ 100. Divide that energy between home, public AC and public DC charging, apply the correct rate to each share, and annualise the vehicle-specific bills that are not charged monthly.

Start with an energy-only estimate
The most defensible first answer is your monthly charging spend, not a made-up average. Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) says that the cost of charging an electric vehicle depends on battery capacity and driver use. In practice, the two inputs you need for a monthly estimate are distance and the vehicle’s energy consumption.

Battery size is useful for understanding how much energy one full charge can hold, but it does not tell you how many kilowatt-hours you will buy in a month. A driver who travels 800 km and one who travels 2,500 km can own the same car and receive very different bills.
The core formula
monthly battery energy (kWh) = monthly kilometres × consumption (kWh/100 km) ÷ 100
Use the car’s own consumption figure from its specification, trip computer or a measured log. Keep the unit as kWh/100 km; do not substitute battery capacity in kWh. If your vehicle display reports a different unit, convert it before calculating.

Allow for charging losses only when you have a defensible factor
The formula estimates energy delivered to the battery. Electricity taken from a wall socket or public charger can be higher because of charging and conversion losses. If your vehicle or charger provides a measured loss figure, represent it as L and calculate:
monthly wall energy (kWh) = monthly battery energy ÷ (1 − L)
For example, a loss factor written as 0.10 means 10 percent. Do not insert a universal loss percentage: it varies with equipment, temperature, charging power and battery condition. If you have no measured value, label your result as a battery-energy estimate rather than pretending it is a meter reading.
What you need to collect each month
- Distance: kilometres driven during the month, taken from the odometer or a reliable trip log.
- Consumption: the exact kWh/100 km value for your model and driving pattern.
- Charging split: kWh charged at home, at public AC stations and at public DC or fast stations.
- Emirate and tariff: the electricity account and public-charging network used.
- Non-energy costs: insurance, maintenance, tyres, registration and inspection, plus any charger installation cost.
If you do not have kWh readings for each charging source, estimate the source shares as percentages and clearly mark them as assumptions. Replace them with meter or app data when available.
Dubai home charging: how DEWA billing works
DEWA states that electricity used to charge at home is added to the normal residential electricity bill at standard residential rates. It is not a separate national EV tariff. Your household’s other electricity consumption determines which portions of the bill fall into each slab.
“When charging an EV at home, the electricity used is added to the normal DEWA bill at standard residential electricity rates.” — Dubai Electricity & Water Authority consumer FAQ
DEWA residential electricity rates shown for October 2026
| Monthly household electricity consumption | Energy rate (AED/kWh) |
|---|---|
| 0–2,000 kWh | 0.230 |
| 2,001–4,000 kWh | 0.280 |
| 4,001–6,000 kWh | 0.320 |
| Above 6,000 kWh | 0.380 |
DEWA’s tariff page also shows an electricity fuel surcharge of AED 0.060/kWh for October 2026 and a 5 percent VAT. These are time-sensitive figures. Check the current DEWA tariff and the fuel surcharge on the bill month you are estimating.

Why the household total matters
The table is a slab structure, so the marginal cost of EV energy depends on where your household already sits. Suppose your home is close to the end of the 0–2,000 kWh band. Some additional EV energy may be billed at AED 0.230/kWh, while energy that pushes the household into the next band is billed at AED 0.280/kWh. An estimate that multiplies every EV kWh by one rate can therefore be wrong when the car changes the household’s slab.

For a precise Dubai calculation, first estimate the month’s non-EV household consumption. Add the EV wall energy, split the resulting total across the applicable slabs, add the published fuel surcharge to the billed kWh, and apply VAT as shown on the account. If you are estimating only the incremental EV cost, calculate the bill with and without the EV energy and subtract the two totals; this captures a slab crossing.
DEWA account charges that are not monthly energy
The DEWA service information separately lists an AED 500 security deposit and an AED 20 delivery charge for registered accounts. Treat these as one-time cash-flow items, not recurring monthly charging costs. Guest Mode uses selected packages and bills actual consumption, so confirm the current package and station terms in the DEWA app before relying on it.
Public charging prices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Public rates are separate from residential electricity rates and should not be used as a proxy for home charging. They can also change, so verify the operator’s current app or official service page before publishing or budgeting.
| Network and location | AC charging | DC or fast charging | Tax treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| DEWA registered EV Green Charger, Dubai | AED 0.70/kWh | AED 1.20/kWh | Plus VAT |
| Charge AD, Abu Dhabi Mobility | AED 0.70/kWh | AED 1.20/kWh | Plus VAT |
DEWA identifies its EV Green Charger network as a Dubai network. Abu Dhabi uses its own charging and metering framework. The matching nominal prices do not make the two emirates one national tariff, and they do not establish what every private operator charges.
Converting a public rate to a VAT-inclusive estimate
Where 5 percent VAT applies, an AED 0.70/kWh price is AED 0.735/kWh before any additional station-specific charge, and AED 1.20/kWh becomes AED 1.26/kWh. Use the amount actually shown by the operator; some apps display tax-inclusive totals while others show the base price and tax separately.
Worked calculation using your car’s own consumption
The following example deliberately leaves efficiency as your vehicle’s exact value rather than inventing an average. Enter 1,500 km for the month and call your car’s consumption C kWh/100 km.
- Calculate battery energy:
1,500 × C ÷ 100 = 15C kWh. - If all 15C kWh is charged at a Dubai public AC station, the pre-VAT energy cost is
15C × AED 0.70 = AED 10.50C. With 5 percent VAT, it isAED 11.025C, subject to the operator’s billing display. - If all 15C kWh is charged at a public DC station at AED 1.20/kWh, the pre-VAT cost is
AED 18C; with 5 percent VAT it isAED 18.90C. - For home charging in Dubai, do not multiply 15C by one national rate. Add the wall energy to the household’s other consumption, apply the DEWA slabs, add the current fuel surcharge and then VAT.
If your measured consumption is 18 kWh/100 km, substitute 18 for C; if it is 22, substitute 22. The method stays the same, while the result changes with the car and your driving.
Mixed home and public charging
Let H, A and D be the fractions of monthly battery energy charged at home, public AC and public DC. They should add to 1. Your source-specific energy amounts are:

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Use wall-energy readings rather than battery-energy fractions when your charging app reports the electricity purchased. If you apply a loss factor, apply it consistently to the relevant source before pricing the kWh.
Abu Dhabi home charging and private meters
Abu Dhabi does not use DEWA’s residential account. TAQA Distribution guidance says a private EV charger should be registered so a dedicated meter can be installed, after which billing changes to actual consumption. Apartment residents should confirm whether the landlord, building manager or distribution company controls the connection.
An Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and TAQA Distribution announcement from 2021 described an AED 92 monthly charge until the private-charger meter was installed. Because that information is dated, treat it as a historical interim figure and reconfirm the current amount, eligibility and installation timetable with TAQA before including it in a budget. Do not carry the AED 92 charge into every current Abu Dhabi calculation automatically.
For public use, Abu Dhabi Mobility lists Charge AD at AED 0.70/kWh for AC and AED 1.20/kWh for fast DC, plus applicable VAT. Check the current network announcement and app because locations, access rules and prices can change.
From energy cost to total monthly running cost
Charging is only one component of ownership. Build an energy-only subtotal first, then add costs that belong to the specific driver, car and emirate.
| Cost item | How to convert it to a monthly amount | Evidence to use |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance | Annual premium ÷ 12 | An actual quote for the driver, vehicle, coverage and claims history |
| Scheduled servicing and maintenance | Service-plan total or expected annual spend ÷ 12 | The model’s service schedule and your receipts |
| Tyres | Expected replacement cost ÷ expected service interval in months | Tyre specification, prices and your driving pattern |
| Registration and inspection | Annual fees ÷ 12 | The relevant emirate’s current vehicle requirements |
| Home charger and installation | One-off cost, or an explicitly chosen amortisation period | Written equipment and installation quote |
No reliable, current UAE-wide typical figure for insurance, maintenance, tyres or registration was established. A neat monthly benchmark would hide differences in model, driver, emirate, coverage and usage. Use the actual amounts you can document and label any forecast as an estimate.
Keep one-off and recurring costs separate
Charger hardware, cabling, electrical upgrades and installation are capital costs. Show them as a one-off amount unless you deliberately amortise them over a stated period. Do not silently increase the electricity rate to recover a charger purchase; that makes comparisons with public charging misleading.

Dubai
DEWA says home chargers can be installed behind the customer’s meter and recommends a DEWA-approved electrical contractor for equipment installation. Before ordering hardware:
- Confirm the vehicle connector and the charger’s electrical rating.
- Ask the contractor to assess the existing supply, cable route, protection and parking location.
- Obtain building or landlord approval if you live in an apartment or leased property.
- Request an itemised quote that separates hardware, labour, permits and any electrical upgrade.
The available official guidance does not set one universal Dubai installation price. A site assessment is therefore more useful than an online average.
Abu Dhabi
Confirm the registration and dedicated-meter process with TAQA Distribution before installation. Ask who owns the meter, when consumption billing starts, whether an interim charge applies and which approvals are required for a shared or leased parking space.

How to track the estimate against real bills
- Record distance: note the odometer at the start and end of each month.
- Record consumption: copy the vehicle’s kWh/100 km figure and note whether it is a trip average or a measured charger value.
- Export charging data: total home, public AC and public DC kWh separately from charger meters or apps.
- Apply the current rates: use the DEWA household slabs and fuel surcharge for Dubai, or the current Abu Dhabi meter or operator price.
- Reconcile: compare the calculated home kWh with the electricity bill and investigate large differences before changing the formula.
- Annualise ownership costs: divide documented annual insurance, service, tyre and registration amounts by 12.
Keep the assumptions beside the result: kilometres, consumption, source shares, loss treatment, tariff month and whether VAT is included. A calculation that can be audited is more valuable than a single rounded number.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using battery capacity as monthly consumption
A 60 kWh battery does not mean 60 kWh per month or per charge cycle. Replace battery capacity with distance multiplied by the vehicle’s kWh/100 km consumption.
Applying Dubai’s home rate outside Dubai
DEWA’s slabs and EV Green Charger prices describe Dubai services. Use Abu Dhabi’s TAQA and Charge AD framework there, and verify the tariff for any other emirate or operator.
Ignoring the household slab boundary
In Dubai, adding the car can move total household consumption into a higher band. Calculate the household bill with and without EV energy when the boundary is close.
Mixing battery kWh with wall kWh
Vehicle consumption is usually a battery-side figure, while a charger or utility meter records purchased electricity. Use a measured loss factor when available and label the distinction when it is not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteForgetting VAT or treating it twice
DEWA’s residential bill and public charging prices have their own tax presentation. Confirm whether the displayed amount is before or after 5 percent VAT before multiplying again.
Turning an old interim fee into a permanent cost
The AED 92 Abu Dhabi private-meter charge comes from a 2021 announcement. Verify its current status with TAQA rather than presenting it as a guaranteed monthly fee.
Inventing average ownership costs
Insurance, maintenance, tyres and registration are not interchangeable across UAE drivers. Use your quote, service plan and emirate schedule; if you cannot document a figure, leave it out of the total instead of guessing.
A decision framework for comparing cars or charging patterns
When comparing two electric cars, or home charging with public charging, hold the comparison inputs constant and change one variable at a time.
| Comparison question | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| How many kilometres are driven monthly? | Distance scales energy demand directly. |
| What is each vehicle’s kWh/100 km consumption? | A more efficient car needs fewer kWh for the same route. |
| What share is charged at home? | Home energy follows the emirate and household tariff. |
| What share uses public AC or DC? | DC is priced higher than AC in the published Dubai and Abu Dhabi rates. |
| Will Dubai household use cross a slab? | The marginal home rate can change within the month. |
| What are the charger and installation costs? | One-time expenditure can outweigh a small monthly energy difference for years. |
| What are the actual insurance, service, tyre and registration bills? | Non-energy costs can dominate the total and vary by owner. |
Run both cars through the same distance, tariff month and charging mix. Then report an energy-only result and a documented total-running-cost result so readers can see which assumptions drive the difference.
What your final estimate should look like
A useful UAE estimate has four lines: monthly distance; calculated battery or wall kWh; charging spend by home, AC and DC source; and a separate monthly equivalent for insurance, maintenance, tyres and registration. State the emirate, tariff month, VAT treatment, charging-loss assumption and any one-off charger cost.
Because tariffs and public-network prices can change, refresh the DEWA, Abu Dhabi Mobility and TAQA information before relying on an older spreadsheet. The method remains stable: measure your use, price each charging source correctly and keep ownership costs separate from electricity.
