A 300-mile trip in an SUV that averages 25 MPG, with gasoline priced at an illustrative $4.00 per gallon, would use 12 gallons and cost about $48.
The 2.5-liter engine size does not tell you the SUV’s fuel economy. For a defensible estimate, identify the model year, make, model, engine, transmission and drivetrain, find the matching EPA rating, then apply your distance and local pump price. The result is an estimate; your mileage, driving conditions and vehicle care can change the actual cost.

The three numbers in a fuel-cost estimate
Every estimate requires three inputs:
- Distance: miles for a trip or miles driven in a year.
- Fuel economy: the SUV’s MPG figure for the way you expect to drive.
- Fuel price: your local dollars-per-gallon price for the fuel the vehicle uses.
First divide miles by MPG to estimate gallons consumed. Then multiply gallons by the price per gallon. In symbols:

Combining the two steps gives cost = (miles ÷ MPG) × dollars per gallon. Use trip miles for a road-trip estimate and annual miles for a yearly budget.
Keep the units consistent
Use miles with a U.S. MPG figure and dollars per gallon with a U.S. fuel price. Do not mix a monthly distance with an annual price assumption or compare one vehicle at 10,000 miles with another at 15,000 miles. If you are budgeting monthly, first estimate annual cost and divide by 12, or use the miles you actually expect to drive in that month.
Why “2.5L” is not enough
“2.5L” describes engine displacement: the approximate swept volume of the engine’s cylinders. It is not an MPG rating and does not identify one specific vehicle. Two SUVs with 2.5-liter engines can have different body sizes, transmissions, drivetrains, model years and EPA fuel-economy results.
Before calculating a vehicle-specific dollar figure, gather:
- Model year
- Make and model
- Engine configuration
- Transmission
- Drivetrain or other configuration details shown in the vehicle listing
FuelEconomy.gov’s vehicle lookup uses model year, make, model, engine and transmission information to identify the appropriate estimate. If you do not yet know those details, you can calculate scenarios with an explicitly labeled assumed MPG, but you should not present the result as the rating for every 2.5L SUV.
How to find a defensible MPG figure
1. Match the exact vehicle
Start with the SUV’s EPA label or the matching entry in FuelEconomy.gov. Check that the year, model, engine, transmission and drivetrain correspond to the vehicle you will drive. A nearby trim or a different drivetrain may have a different rating.
2. Choose the right EPA number
Gasoline labels prominently show combined city/highway MPG for quick comparison. They also show city and highway values, gallons consumed per 100 miles and an estimated annual fuel cost. Use the combined figure as a starting point for mixed driving.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a trip that is overwhelmingly urban or highway driving, the corresponding city or highway number may better represent the journey. The label’s figures are standardized estimates, not a promise that every driver will achieve them.
3. Use a calculator when the driving mix is known
The U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Cost Calculator accepts fuel prices and driving inputs, including a custom vehicle with separate city and highway MPG entries. Its highway-share input can produce a blended estimate when you know approximately how much of your driving is on highways.
A blended calculation is useful when neither the city nor highway figure describes your normal use. Enter the expected fuel price, annual or trip mileage, city MPG, highway MPG and approximate highway share. Confirm that the calculator is using the same distance period you intend to budget; otherwise its dollar result will not be comparable with your own calculation.
4. Treat used-vehicle ratings as a baseline
EPA says the original estimate remains the best indicator of average gas mileage over a typical 15-year life when a vehicle is properly maintained. That is a general baseline, not a guarantee of the MPG of an individual used SUV today.

Calculate road-trip fuel cost step by step
- Measure the route. Use the planned trip distance in miles, including a reasonable allowance for detours if you want them included.
- Select an MPG value. Use the exact vehicle’s combined, city or highway rating according to the trip’s driving pattern.
- Divide miles by MPG. The result is estimated gallons required.
- Enter the local price. Use the dollars-per-gallon price you expect to pay.
- Multiply gallons by price. This is the estimated fuel bill for the trip.

Assume an SUV averages 25 MPG, the trip is 300 miles and gasoline costs $4.00 per gallon:

- 300 miles ÷ 25 MPG = 12 gallons
- 12 gallons × $4.00 = $48
Those are illustrative inputs, not a current fuel-price quote and not an asserted rating for every 2.5L SUV. Replace all three values with your route, matched EPA figure and local price.
Quick estimates for other distances
At the same assumed 25 MPG and $4.00 per gallon, the fuel-only cost is $16 per 100 miles, $80 for 500 miles and $160 for 1,000 miles. These figures follow directly from the formula and change if either MPG or price changes. They are planning examples, not promises about a particular SUV.
Estimate annual fuel spending
Use the same equation with annual miles:
Annual fuel cost = (annual miles ÷ MPG) × price per gallon
Illustrative 12,000-mile example
If a driver travels 12,000 miles per year, the vehicle rating is 25 MPG and gasoline costs $3.80 per gallon:
- 12,000 ÷ 25 = 480 gallons per year
- 480 × $3.80 = $1,824 per year
All three figures are assumptions in this example. Your result changes directly when annual mileage, MPG or fuel price changes.
Understand the EPA label’s annual-cost example
EPA label explanations describe an annual estimate using 15,000 miles and $3.70 per gallon. Those are example assumptions for the label calculation, not a current universal fuel price, a required mileage target or a prediction of your household’s spending. Substitute your own miles and local price when budgeting.
Convert an annual estimate to a monthly planning amount
If your annual estimate is $1,824, a simple monthly budget is $1,824 ÷ 12, or $152 per month. That is an average for planning; actual months will differ because mileage, trips and pump prices are not identical every month. Recalculate when your annual driving pattern changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow much does it cost to drive an SUV per mile?
To find fuel cost per mile, divide the fuel price by MPG:
Cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ MPG
At 25 MPG and $4.00 per gallon, the fuel-only cost is $4.00 ÷ 25, or $0.16 per mile. Multiplying $0.16 by 300 miles returns the $48 trip estimate. This figure covers fuel only; it does not include insurance, maintenance, depreciation, financing, registration or other ownership costs.
You can also express the same result per 100 miles: cost per 100 miles = 100 ÷ MPG × price per gallon. At 25 MPG and $4.00 per gallon, that is 4 gallons × $4.00, or $16 per 100 miles. This presentation is often easier when comparing vehicles with different efficiencies.
How many gallons will a 2.5L SUV use?
Engine displacement does not determine gallons used. Distance and actual fuel economy do:
Gallons = miles ÷ MPG
At 25 MPG, 100 miles requires an estimated four gallons. A 500-mile journey at the same MPG requires 20 gallons. Change the MPG input to match the exact SUV and driving conditions rather than assuming every 2.5L model consumes the same amount.

For an annual illustration, 12,000 miles at 20 MPG requires 600 gallons, while the same distance at 30 MPG requires 400 gallons. The difference is 200 gallons before applying a fuel price, which is why the exact MPG input matters more than the displacement label.
Compare two SUVs fairly
When comparing real SUV choices, hold annual miles and fuel price constant. Compare combined MPG, gallons per 100 miles, and resulting annual fuel cost. Gallons per 100 miles can make the spending difference clearer because it rises as efficiency falls.
| Illustrative efficiency | Gallons per 100 miles | Gallons at 12,000 miles | Annual cost at $3.80/gal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 MPG | 5.00 | 600 | $2,280 |
| 25 MPG | 4.00 | 480 | $1,824 |
| 30 MPG | 3.33 | 400 | $1,520 |
These rows are mathematical scenarios, not ratings assigned to particular SUVs. The 25-MPG scenario costs $456 less per year than the 20-MPG scenario under the stated assumptions, while the 30-MPG scenario costs $304 less than 25 MPG. If either vehicle’s MPG, annual mileage or fuel price differs, recalculate both with identical inputs before drawing a cost conclusion.
Test the effect of a fuel-price change
Keep mileage and MPG fixed when examining price risk. At 12,000 miles and 25 MPG, the SUV uses 480 gallons. A price of $3.00 per gallon produces $1,440; $3.80 produces $1,824; and $4.00 produces $1,920. This sensitivity check shows how much of the budget change comes from the pump price rather than from the vehicle.
Combined, city and highway MPG: which should you use?
Combined MPG for mixed use
Use combined city/highway MPG when your normal use includes both kinds of driving and you need one practical planning number. It is the prominent quick-comparison figure on the gasoline label.
City MPG for predominantly urban trips
If the route is mostly city driving, stop-and-go conditions, use the city estimate as the starting point. For a mixed route, using city MPG for every mile can overstate fuel use.
Highway MPG for highway-heavy travel
For a long, mostly highway journey, the highway estimate may be more representative than combined MPG. Do not treat it as a guarantee: actual results vary with driving conditions and how you operate and maintain the SUV.
Account for the gap between the label and your fuel bill
EPA’s label explanatory material states: “Actual results will vary for many reasons, including driving conditions and how you drive and maintain your vehicle.” Use the rating as a consistent planning baseline, then improve the estimate with your own records.
- Use the route’s actual city/highway mix rather than an unrelated single figure.
- Update the price whenever local fuel prices change.
- Recalculate after your annual mileage changes.
- For a used SUV, monitor whether maintenance condition and current operation are producing results close to the original estimate.
Do not quietly replace an EPA rating with one unusually good or bad tank. A single fill-up can be unrepresentative; a series of complete fill-ups gives a more useful personal average.
Track your SUV’s real-world MPG
You can use a phone note or spreadsheet to record the odometer reading, gallons purchased and price paid at each fill-up. The DOE’s FuelEconomy.gov My MPG tool is intended to help drivers calculate and track fuel economy, although its current interface may change.
- Record the odometer or trip miles at a fill-up.
- Record the gallons added at the next fill-up.
- Divide miles driven since the prior fill-up by gallons added to estimate MPG for that interval.
- Multiply those gallons by the actual price paid to obtain the fill-up’s fuel cost.
- Keep multiple entries and use the average to reduce the effect of one unusual tank.
Once you have a personal MPG average, use it in the cost formula for a budget that reflects your own SUV and driving pattern. Keep the EPA figure alongside it when comparing vehicles, because a consistent official rating remains the fair comparison baseline.

What information should you provide for a personalized answer?
To replace an illustration with a vehicle-specific estimate, provide the model year, make and model, engine and transmission, drivetrain, expected trip or annual miles, and the fuel price you expect to pay. If you know your driving mix, state the approximate city and highway portions. Without those details, the most accurate answer is the formula plus clearly marked scenarios, not one exact dollar amount.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate gas cost for a road trip in a 2.5L SUV?
Find the route miles, choose the exact SUV’s city, highway or combined MPG, divide miles by MPG to get gallons, then multiply by your local dollars-per-gallon price. For example, 300 miles ÷ 25 MPG × $4.00 equals $48.
How much does it cost to drive an SUV per mile?
Divide the fuel price per gallon by MPG. At 25 MPG and $4.00 per gallon, fuel costs $0.16 per mile, or $16 per 100 miles. This excludes insurance, maintenance, depreciation, financing and other ownership costs.
How many gallons will my SUV use?
Use gallons = miles ÷ MPG. A 500-mile trip at 25 MPG uses an estimated 20 gallons. Engine displacement by itself cannot answer the question.
Does a 2.5L engine get 25 MPG?
Not necessarily. 2.5L identifies displacement, not fuel economy. Use the model year, make, model, engine, transmission and drivetrain to find the matching EPA rating.
Should I use city, highway or combined MPG?
Use combined MPG for mixed driving, city MPG for predominantly urban travel and highway MPG for a highway-heavy trip. A calculator can blend separate city and highway values when you know the driving mix.
Why is my actual fuel cost different from the EPA estimate?
EPA explains that actual results vary with driving conditions and how you drive and maintain the vehicle. Track several complete fill-ups, update the local fuel price and use your personal average for budgeting while retaining the EPA figure for fair comparisons.
Are the EPA label’s 15,000 miles and $3.70 per gallon my expected annual cost?
No. They are example assumptions used for the label’s annual-cost estimate. Replace them with your own annual miles and local fuel price.
The Bottom Line
A 2.5L badge is not enough to price fuel. Match the SUV’s model year and configuration to its EPA MPG, choose the figure that fits your driving, then calculate (miles ÷ MPG) × price per gallon. Use identical mileage and price assumptions when comparing SUVs, and refine the estimate with several real-world fill-ups.
