Estimate electric excavator runtime by dividing usable battery energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) by the machine’s average electrical draw in kilowatts (kW) for the planned work: runtime (hours) = usable kWh ÷ average kW. For example, 30 kWh usable energy at a 6 kW average draw gives 5 hours. That is an energy-balance estimate, not a guarantee: digging resistance, attachments, travel, standby time, temperature, battery condition, operator habits and charging limits can materially change the result.
Use usable energy, not the headline battery capacity
The arithmetic is simple, but the inputs determine whether the answer is useful. Start with the battery energy the excavator can actually deliver before its programmed reserve or shutdown threshold. A manufacturer may publish both a nominal battery capacity and a usable-energy value. Use the usable value whenever it is available.

If only nominal capacity is published, label the result an upper-bound or preliminary estimate. The entire nominal pack is not necessarily available for productive work. Reserve limits, battery-management controls, temperature, battery age and condition, and conversion losses can reduce delivered energy. There is no universal reserve percentage that can be applied safely to every excavator, so do not subtract an invented percentage.

Power and energy use the same relationship as a household appliance: a machine averaging 6 kW for one hour consumes 6 kWh. The word average matters. A motor’s rated or peak output is not evidence that the excavator draws that amount continuously.
What each input means
- Usable battery energy: the OEM’s stated energy available between the normal full-charge point and the reserve or minimum state of charge used for work.
- Average electrical draw: the mean power over the whole operating period, including productive work, travel and waiting when those systems remain energized.
- Planned reserve: the state of charge at which you intend to stop rather than running to a theoretical empty battery. Your calculation should end at that threshold.
A step-by-step runtime calculation
- Define the work period. Write down the shift length, expected digging hours, travel time, attachment use, waiting or standby periods and any charging break. Include nonproductive time because it still may consume energy.
- Find the exact machine’s energy figure. Obtain usable kWh from the operator manual, technical data sheet, telematics system or OEM representative. Record whether the figure is usable or nominal, and note the market, battery option and software or reserve settings.
- Determine average draw for the duty cycle. Prefer measured telematics data or an OEM calculator configured for the same machine and job. If you have only task-specific power data, calculate each segment separately rather than borrowing a generic excavator consumption rate.
- Apply the equation. Divide usable kWh by the average kW draw. Keep units consistent: kWh divided by kW produces hours.
- Apply the reserve policy and conditions. Do not schedule the last calculated fraction of an hour if the job requires a safety reserve, uncertain weather margin or time to reach a charger. State the assumed temperature, material, attachment and operator pattern alongside the result.
- Validate in the field. Compare the estimate with state-of-charge changes and energy data from a representative shift. Update the average draw for the actual work cycle instead of treating the first estimate as a permanent specification.
Worked arithmetic example
Suppose the OEM identifies 30 kWh as usable energy and site data indicates a 6 kW average draw over the planned mix of digging, travel and waiting:
30 kWh ÷ 6 kW = 5 hours
This example demonstrates the calculation only; it is not a measured performance claim for a particular excavator. If the same machine averages 8 kW under harder digging, the arithmetic becomes 30 ÷ 8 = 3.75 hours. If it averages 4 kW during light grading, it becomes 30 ÷ 4 = 7.5 hours. The battery did not change; the duty cycle did.

Total energy (kWh) = (draw1 × time1) + (draw2 × time2) + …
Then compare total energy with usable capacity and the planned reserve. If you need a single average draw for the whole shift, divide total segment energy by total elapsed operating time.
| Shift segment | Inputs to collect | How to use the data |
|---|---|---|
| Active digging | Material, depth, cycle intensity, hydraulic demand and time under load | Use measured or OEM task-specific kW; hard material generally raises draw. |
| Attachment work | Attachment type, flow or pressure setting and operating time | Model separately when a breaker, auger, compactor or other auxiliary circuit changes demand. |
| Travel | Distance, slope, surface, speed and loaded or unloaded condition | Use travel energy for moving between digs; slopes and rough ground can increase draw. |
| Idle or standby | Waiting duration and OEM standby rate, if supplied | Multiply the standby rate by waiting time. If no rate exists, mark idle energy as an uncertainty rather than assuming zero. |
| Charging break | Actual charger input, machine limit, state of charge and break duration | Estimate energy added from the machine’s charging curve, not charger nameplate power alone. |
Why idle time belongs in the model
Hydraulic work may stop while pumps, controls, cooling systems, battery conditioning and other auxiliaries remain active. Some machines have a low standby rate; others draw substantially more while ready to work. Include the OEM’s standby figure when available. Without one, show a range or flag the waiting period as an uncertainty rather than claiming that idle energy is zero.

Material resistance and digging intensity
Loose soil and light grading usually impose less hydraulic resistance than dense clay, rock, frozen ground or heavily compacted fill. A cycle that keeps the boom, arm and bucket near relief pressure can draw far more than occasional shallow movements. Production targets also matter: faster cycles and more simultaneous functions tend to raise average power.

Attachments and auxiliary hydraulics
Breakers, augers, compactors, thumbs and other attachments can require different flow, pressure and duty patterns from a bucket. Use the attachment’s expected operating time and the excavator’s auxiliary settings in the energy estimate. A runtime claim based on bucket digging should not be transferred unchanged to continuous breaker work.
Travel and site geography
Travel consumes energy even when the excavator is not digging. Long relocations, ramps, soft ground and repeated turning add load. Develon’s illustrative runtime calculator treats workload and standby separately and cautions that site geography, operator style, temperature and auxiliary battery draws affect actual runtime. Its benchmark values and multipliers are examples for that calculator, not universal parameters for another make or model.
Operator technique
Joystick smoothness, simultaneous function use, unnecessary high engine or pump settings, travel speed and time spent holding hydraulic functions against resistance all influence draw. Wacker Neuson states that actual EZ26e running time depends on operating conditions, the task, operating and driving habits, ambient temperature and battery condition; heavy loads or low temperatures can shorten it.

Temperature and battery condition
Cold conditions can reduce available energy or limit power until the battery reaches a suitable temperature. Heat can increase cooling demand and may trigger protective limits. Age, cycle history, storage conditions and current state of health also affect usable capacity. Use the OEM’s temperature and battery-condition guidance where available, and avoid applying a warm-weather runtime directly to a cold-weather shift without a margin.

Published excavator examples: useful sanity checks, not a universal formula
Manufacturers publish different capacity definitions, test cycles and “up to” conditions. The following figures illustrate the spread; they are not an independent efficiency ranking. Do not divide each capacity by its advertised maximum runtime and compare the resulting kW values as though the tests were identical.
| Model | Published battery information | Published runtime statement | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wacker Neuson EZ26e | 39 kWh | Up to 5.8 hours | The manufacturer says actual time depends on operating conditions, task, habits, ambient temperature and battery condition. |
| Takeuchi TB20e | 24.7 kWh | Up to 8 hours of continuous working time | Figure is stated at 65% load. |
| Volvo ECR18 Electric | 16 kWh | Indicative 3–5 hours | Depends on application; Volvo says dealers can help calculate operating time and charging needs. |
| Liebherr R 920 G8-E | 188 kWh standard or 282 kWh high-capacity battery | 6–8 hours; up to 10 hours with a one-hour intermediate charge | The 10-hour example uses up to 150 kW DC charging and is specific to the stated model and conditions. |
| Komatsu PC210LCE | 451 kWh | Up to 8 hours; tests from 5 to 9 hours | Komatsu attributes the test range to workload conditions (manufacturer material, 2023). |
| Hitachi ZE135 | 298 kWh | Up to 6 hours | Depends on application (Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe material, 2024). |
These examples show why battery size alone cannot answer “How long will it run?” A smaller pack can last longer in a light-duty cycle, while a larger pack can be depleted quickly under heavy hydraulic demand. “Up to” describes a favorable or defined condition, not a guaranteed shift duration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan a shift around a reserve and a realistic charge
Choose a stop point before the battery is theoretically empty
Schedule work to reach a defined reserve threshold, not zero state of charge. The reserve should cover the site’s safety needs, a controlled return to the charging point and uncertainty in workload or weather. Use the OEM’s recommended reserve or operating window when it publishes one. If it does not, document the threshold chosen by your fleet or site manager rather than presenting it as a universal engineering value.
Account for energy added during a break
Energy added is not necessarily charger rating multiplied by break time. The machine may limit input, and the charge curve normally tapers as the battery fills. A valid break calculation needs the actual charger power, excavator charging limit, starting and target state of charge, battery temperature and the time available.

Liebherr’s R 920 G8-E example states up to 150 kW DC charging and says a one-hour intermediate charge can extend operation from six to eight hours to ten hours under its stated conditions. Treat that as a model-specific manufacturer claim, not a general rule that any 150 kW charger adds two to four hours to any excavator.
Check site infrastructure
- Confirm that the electrical service can supply the charger continuously at the required voltage and current.
- Verify connector type, grounding, protection, cable reach and permissions for the worksite.
- Allow for setup, authentication, cooling or battery preconditioning, not only the nominal plugged-in time.
- Coordinate charging with other equipment so simultaneous loads do not trip site limits.
How to improve an estimate when the first result is uncertain
Use telemetry from a representative shift
Record state of charge, battery energy used, elapsed time, operating modes, travel, attachment use, ambient temperature and waiting periods. Repeat the observation on the material and route that matter to the job. Compute average draw as measured energy divided by elapsed operating time, then rerun the runtime equation with the planned reserve.
Use the OEM calculator or dealer estimate correctly
If the manufacturer supplies a runtime calculator, enter the exact model, battery option, attachment, workload, standby pattern, temperature and charging assumptions it requests. Keep a copy of the inputs with the output. Volvo’s ECR18 Electric information describes monitoring battery level and charging status and says dealers can help calculate operating time and the optimum charging solution for a customer’s operation.
Build a range when inputs vary
For uncertain jobs, calculate at least a light, expected and heavy case using credible measured or OEM-supported draws. For example, use separate draws for easy soil, normal production and hard excavation rather than applying an arbitrary percentage uplift. Report the resulting hours with the assumptions attached; a range is more honest than a single precise-looking number.
Comparing two electric excavators for the same job
Use the same work profile, reserve policy, weather assumption and charging opportunity for both machines. Capacity and headline runtime alone are insufficient.
| Comparison item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Usable battery energy | What kWh is available above the OEM’s reserve, and is the figure for the selected battery option? |
| Energy use under the duty cycle | What measured or OEM-stated average kW applies to this material, attachment and production rate? |
| Runtime condition | Is the quoted time continuous work, a mixed shift, a percentage load, an indicative range or an “up to” claim? |
| Standby consumption | What does the machine use while waiting, powered on and ready? |
| Environmental limits | How do temperature, battery condition, altitude or site conditions affect available energy and power? |
| Charging system | What charger type and input power are supported, and how much energy will the battery actually accept during the planned break? |
| Monitoring and validation | Can telematics show state of charge, energy used, charging status and operating conditions for the exact machine? |
Common estimation mistakes and fixes
- Using nominal kWh as guaranteed work energy: replace it with OEM usable energy, or label the result an upper bound.
- Dividing by rated motor power: use average measured or model-specific draw; rated power is not continuous consumption.
- Assuming every hour is digging: add travel, attachment operation and standby segments.
- Treating idle as zero: apply an OEM standby rate or identify the period as uncertain.
- Copying another model’s kWh-per-hour figure: workload, hydraulics, controls and battery systems differ; obtain data for the exact excavator.
- Repeating an “up to” runtime as a guarantee: retain the load, application, temperature and test-condition wording.
- Calculating charging from nameplate power alone: use the machine’s charging limit and real charge curve for the available break.
- Ignoring reserve: plan to the operating threshold your site requires, not to an empty-battery assumption.
- Overprecision: round only after stating the uncertainty; a result such as 5.0 hours does not mean the machine will deliver exactly five hours on every shift.
A practical worksheet
Before committing to a shift, record the following in the job plan:
- Machine model, battery option and software or reserve setting.
- Usable battery energy in kWh, with the OEM document or telematics source and date.
- Task segments and hours: digging, attachment work, travel, standby and other auxiliaries.
- Average kW for each segment, including the evidence or assumption used.
- Total energy: sum each segment’s kW multiplied by its hours.
- Starting state of charge, planned reserve and any charging break.
- Charger type, machine input limit, realistic accepted power and break duration.
- Expected temperature, material, terrain, operator pattern and battery condition.
- Expected end-of-shift state of charge and the trigger for returning to charge.
For a consequential production commitment, have the OEM or dealer validate the inputs, then compare the prediction with measured site data after the first representative shift. This process turns a generic capacity figure into a defensible plan for one machine and one job.
