The reliable way to estimate an electric SUV’s range is to combine the official rating for the exact vehicle with your own speed, weather, terrain, HVAC use and routes. Start with the model year, trim, drivetrain and wheel package you would actually buy. Then test that vehicle in a route planner that includes charging stops and, where available, temperature or seasonal assumptions. Treat the result as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.
There is no evidence-based percentage that can be subtracted from every SUV’s window-sticker number. A highway commute in mild weather, a mountain trip in winter and stop-and-go city driving can produce very different results from the same battery.

What the published range number actually means
An electric SUV’s advertised range is a standardized estimate produced under a defined test procedure. It is useful for comparing vehicles tested in the same market, but it is not a personalized promise about how far you will drive on every charge.
For U.S. vehicles, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) runs city and highway driving cycles on a laboratory dynamometer. The agency then adjusts the laboratory results for factors the test cannot fully represent, including air-conditioning use, cold temperatures, high speed and aggressive driving. EPA says the most common adjustment method uses a factor of 0.7; its example turns a 200-mile laboratory highway result into 140 miles after adjustment. Read the full method at EPA’s range-testing explainer.

After adjustment, the city and highway figures are combined using a 55% city and 45% highway weighting. The number on the U.S. label therefore represents a standardized mix, not necessarily your driving mix. EPA describes the label value as an estimate of the distance the vehicle can travel on a fully charged battery. Check the interactive EV label for the exact model year and configuration you are considering.
Those details matter because two versions sold under the same SUV name can have different batteries, motors, drivetrains or wheels. A range figure from a rear-wheel-drive version cannot be assumed for an all-wheel-drive version, and a number from one model year may not apply to another.
Step 1: Identify the exact SUV configuration
Before comparing range, write down the specification you would purchase. Use the manufacturer’s specification sheet and the vehicle’s official label for that configuration.

| Item to record | Why it changes the estimate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Model year | Battery software, equipment and test results can change between years. | Use the rating for the year in the listing or vehicle identification record. |
| Trim or battery option | Different trims may use different battery capacities or power systems. | Match the exact trim, not the best number in the model family. |
| Drivetrain | Additional motors and all-wheel drive can alter energy consumption. | Confirm rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. |
| Wheel and tire package | Wheel size, tire design and pressure affect rolling resistance and consumption. | Check the factory wheel/tire combination fitted to the vehicle. |
| Official city and highway figures | The combined figure may not represent a predominantly highway trip. | Record separate figures when the market publishes them. |
Do not substitute a range from a similar-looking SUV, a different wheel package or a lower-power trim. If a listing does not identify the configuration clearly, treat its range claim as unverified until you can match it to an official source.
Step 2: Describe the trips you actually need to cover
Range planning becomes useful when it starts with your calendar rather than a headline number. Separate regular driving from occasional trips because each has a different tolerance for charging stops.
Routine commuting and errands
List the longest normal day, not just the average commute. Include school runs, shopping, detours and the return journey. Note whether the vehicle will sit outside overnight and whether you normally leave with a full charge or a lower state of charge.

Occasional long-distance travel
Write down the routes you expect to drive several times a year. Record the total distance, motorway or freeway share, major climbs, likely traffic and places where charging is available. A vehicle that easily covers your weekly use may still be inconvenient on a route with long gaps between chargers.

For each important route, note:
- Typical and maximum speeds, especially the proportion of fast highway driving.
- Elevation changes, mountain passes and whether the return leg is uphill.
- Usual outside temperatures in the hottest and coldest season.
- How often cabin heating, air conditioning, windshield defrosting or battery preconditioning will run.
- Passenger and cargo loads that are normal for your trips.
This profile is not a laboratory test. It is a way to select realistic assumptions when you use a route planner and to decide whether its result leaves enough margin for your comfort.
Step 3: Compare your route with the label conditions
Use the combined label as a starting point, then ask which parts of your driving differ from the standardized mix.
Highway speed
High-speed travel generally consumes more energy than slower urban driving because aerodynamic resistance rises with speed. EPA includes high speed among the real-world factors addressed by its adjustment method. If most of your miles are on a fast highway, the combined city/highway value is not a direct forecast for that trip; use the highway figure where available and check the route in a vehicle-specific planner.
Temperature and cabin climate
Cold weather can reduce practical range through both battery behavior and the energy required to heat the cabin. EPA lists cold temperatures and air conditioning among the factors considered in its adjusted rating. EPA also reports an average finding that range could decrease by about 40% in cold conditions when heat is used. That is a broad reported average across research, not a prediction for a particular SUV, route or driver, so do not turn it into a universal winter multiplier.
Hot weather can also increase consumption when air conditioning runs continuously. If your least favorable season is cold, evaluate that season directly in the route planner instead of relying on the mild-weather label.

Terrain
Climbing requires additional energy, while descending can recover some energy through regenerative braking. The net result depends on the route and driving conditions. Manufacturer guidance from Tesla identifies terrain, speed, driving style and weather as factors that affect energy consumption. A simple distance comparison cannot capture a mountain route as well as an elevation-aware route estimate.
Driving style and tires
Rapid acceleration, high cruising speeds and aggressive braking can reduce efficiency. Tire pressure and rolling resistance matter as well; cold weather can increase rolling resistance, and Tesla advises maintaining the recommended pressure. For a purchase estimate, verify that the vehicle has the intended wheel and tire package and that its tires are in normal condition. Do not treat a particular tire accessory as a guaranteed range upgrade.
Step 4: Run a vehicle-specific route estimate
A route planner converts a standardized rating into a trip estimate that includes distance, elevation and charging logistics. EPA’s EV trip-planning guidance cites tools such as A Better Route Planner and Chargeway as examples. Some route planners allow a vehicle model, season or temperature to be selected.

- Select the exact vehicle. Choose the model year, trim, drivetrain and battery option. If the planner does not list the precise configuration, note the mismatch rather than silently choosing a higher-range version.
- Enter the complete route. Include the actual starting point, destination and meaningful stops. A round trip should be entered as a round trip, or planned as two legs with the intended charging locations.
- Set the conditions. Use realistic outside temperature, speed or driving-style assumptions where the tool provides them. Select winter or summer conditions instead of leaving a default mild temperature when that is not representative.
- Review charging assumptions. Check the arrival state of charge, recommended departure state of charge, charger power and estimated time at each stop. A plan that technically reaches the destination with almost no reserve may not be practical for you.
- Check charger availability. Confirm that the proposed stations are on your route and suitable for the vehicle. Route software can model a stop, but it cannot guarantee that a station will be working or available when you arrive.
- Repeat for the worst important scenario. Run the longest routine day and the least favorable season separately. Save the assumptions so you can compare SUVs on equal terms.
Planner results are estimates. Their accuracy depends on the vehicle model, map data, weather assumptions, traffic, charger information and how closely your driving matches the selected profile.
How to turn the estimates into a buying decision
Set a routine-use requirement
Compare the planner’s result for your longest normal day with the distance you are comfortable covering before charging. Include an allowance for an unexpected detour or a missed charger, but choose that allowance according to your own tolerance rather than applying a universal percentage that the available evidence does not support.
Evaluate road-trip convenience, not just maximum range
For occasional long trips, count charging stops and charging time as well as miles. Two SUVs with similar official ranges can produce different journeys if one route requires an extra stop or a longer dwell at the charger. Record the number of stops, estimated time and arrival state of charge for the same route and season.

| Official range | What is the number for the exact year, trim, drivetrain and wheels? |
| City versus highway | Are separate figures available, and which type matches most of my miles? |
| Typical route | What does a vehicle-specific planner predict for my normal week? |
| Least favorable season | Does the winter or summer estimate still meet my requirement? |
| Long trips | How many charging stops and how much charging time are required? |
| Used-vehicle condition | What battery-health evidence and warranty coverage are available? |
Keep the assumptions identical when comparing vehicles. Changing the temperature, speed or charger settings between models can make a weaker vehicle look better simply because it received an easier scenario.
Estimating range for a used electric SUV
A used SUV needs a separate battery-condition check. The sources available here do not establish one reliable degradation percentage that applies across models, years and climates. Do not reduce the official rating by an invented figure.
Instead, seek model-specific evidence:
- Ask for a battery state-of-health report or a diagnostic reading that identifies usable capacity.
- Check the manufacturer’s battery warranty, including its duration, mileage limit and minimum-capacity terms.
- Review service records and any warnings related to the high-voltage battery or charging system.
- Run the used vehicle’s exact configuration through the same route scenarios as a new example.
- Compare the observed or documented battery condition with the range the seller is claiming, rather than with a generic industry average.
If the seller cannot document battery condition, treat that uncertainty as part of the purchase decision. A low-mileage vehicle is not automatically equivalent to a new battery, and a high-mileage vehicle is not automatically unusable; the relevant evidence is the condition of that specific pack and its warranty.

Using the best range in a model family
Problem: You select the longest-range trim in a brochure even though you are considering a heavier or all-wheel-drive version.
Correction: Rebuild the estimate from the exact configuration and wheel package.
Applying a blanket 20% rule
Problem: You subtract the same percentage for every trip and season.
Correction: Use route-specific conditions. The evidence supports directional effects from speed, temperature, HVAC use, terrain and driving style, but not one SUV-wide adjustment that predicts every buyer’s result.
Planning only the outbound leg
Problem: The destination is within the headline range, but the return route has no convenient charger.
Correction: Plan the full itinerary, including charging locations, charger power and time.

Ignoring winter heating
Problem: A mild-weather estimate is treated as a winter guarantee.
Correction: Run a cold-temperature scenario with cabin heat and compare it with your longest winter day.
Trusting a planner’s default vehicle
Problem: The software models a related trim or a generic battery.
Correction: Verify the selected model and note any configuration the planner cannot represent.
Treating a charger as guaranteed
Problem: The itinerary assumes a station will be available and operating.
Correction: Check station status and identify an alternative where a failed stop would leave you stranded.
What to do when your market uses a different rating system
EPA figures apply to U.S. labels. Other markets may use a different standardized procedure, such as WLTP. The sources used here do not establish a dependable conversion between EPA and WLTP, so do not multiply one rating by a guessed conversion factor.
Use the official rating issued for your market and the exact vehicle configuration, then apply the same workflow: describe your routes, account for speed, weather, HVAC and terrain, and run a route estimate using the vehicle and conditions you will actually face. When comparing SUVs across regions, label the test procedure beside every number so that unlike figures are not presented as directly equivalent.
Printable pre-purchase checklist
- Record model year, trim, drivetrain, battery option and wheel/tire package.
- Copy the official combined range and separate city/highway figures where published.
- List your longest routine day and your important long-distance routes.
- Write down highway speeds, elevation changes, seasonal temperatures and HVAC use.
- Run a vehicle-specific planner for normal and least favorable conditions.
- Record charging stops, charging time and arrival state of charge for long trips.
- Repeat every test with identical assumptions when comparing SUVs.
- For a used SUV, obtain battery-health evidence and read the battery warranty terms.
- Reject any estimate that depends on a different trim, an unidentified test procedure or a universal percentage with no defined scenario.
The practical answer
Buy based on the exact SUV’s official rating plus a route estimate built around your own worst important conditions. The EPA number is a consistent starting point: in the United States it combines adjusted city and highway testing at a 55%/45% weighting, with laboratory results commonly adjusted using a 0.7 factor. Your actual outcome still depends on speed, driving style, temperature, heating or air conditioning, terrain, tires, traffic and battery condition.
A model is a good range fit when its least favorable routine scenario leaves you comfortable and its occasional-trip plan has acceptable stops and charging time. If the evidence for a used vehicle’s battery health or the planner’s vehicle match is weak, treat that uncertainty as a reason to investigate further rather than pretending the window-sticker number is precise.
