You can tailor assistance on a compatible Bosch smart-system eBike from the eBike Flow app. Turn on the bike, keep it stationary, connect it to Flow, then open eBike settings → Custom riding modes. From there, you can choose up to four available riding modes and, for each mode, adjust the controls Bosch makes available for your drive unit: support, dynamics, maximum torque, maximum power and maximum speed. The exact list depends on the eBike, drive unit, software version and manufacturer configuration.
What the Flow app can change
Bosch’s “Custom riding modes” feature changes how the motor delivers assistance; it does not turn an ordinary eBike into a different drive system. Your bike still operates within the drive unit’s engineering limits and the legal assistance-speed limit that applies in your country. A setting can make assistance feel gentler, more immediate, stronger at low cadence or more economical, but it cannot raise the motor above its specified maximum output.

There are two separate jobs in the Flow app:
- Choosing the mode list: select which available riding modes appear on the bike, with a maximum of four.
- Tuning a mode: select one mode and change the sliders or values that Bosch and the bike manufacturer expose for that mode.
Those jobs are related but not identical. A bike can offer several modes while allowing only some of them to be tuned, and a manufacturer can restrict both the available modes and later changes to their settings.
Check compatibility before opening the settings
Customization is available only when the eBike uses Bosch’s compatible smart system and is paired with the eBike Flow app. The menus and controls are not universal across every Bosch-equipped bicycle. Drive-unit generation, bicycle type, installed firmware and the bicycle manufacturer’s configuration determine what you see.

Use this readiness checklist
- Install the current version of the eBike Flow app for your phone.
- Turn the eBike on and make sure its battery has enough charge to remain powered during setup.
- Enable the phone connection required by Flow and connect to the eBike before trying to edit anything.
- Keep the eBike stationary when changing the selected riding-mode list.
- Be prepared for fewer controls than the ones described in Bosch’s general help information; a particular drive unit may not expose every slider.
If your bike is not a compatible smart-system model, the Custom riding modes entry may not appear at all. That is a compatibility difference, not an indication that the app is malfunctioning.
Change the selected riding modes
Bosch permits a maximum of four selected riding modes at a time. The list is drawn from modes available to your specific eBike, so you cannot add a mode that the drive unit or manufacturer has not enabled.
- Switch on and stop the eBike. Put it in a stable place. Bosch requires the bike to be stationary for editing the selected mode list.
- Connect in Flow. Open the eBike Flow app and wait until it shows the eBike as connected. If the connection is inactive, the relevant editing controls may be unavailable.
- Open the bike settings. From the eBike home screen, choose eBike settings, then Custom riding modes. Bosch’s regional guidance uses this path; wording can vary slightly with app version or region.
- Choose Edit list. Select the modes you want available from the modes displayed for your bike. Do not select more than four.
- Save or confirm the list. Follow the confirmation shown by Flow and wait for the change to transfer while the phone and eBike remain connected.
Common examples in Bosch’s overview include Eco, which emphasizes lower support and range; Turbo, which emphasizes strong assistance on steep climbs; Cargo, intended for carrying loads; and eMTB, which varies assistance dynamically for mountain riding. These are examples only. Their presence, names and behavior on your bike depend on its drive unit and manufacturer settings.
Tune an individual riding mode
After the mode list is set, tap a mode in Custom riding modes. Flow displays the controls supported by that mode and drive unit. Change only the values that appear; the absence of a control is a configuration limit, not a missing step in the procedure.

Bosch describes five possible adjustment categories. Your bike may show fewer than five.
| Control | What it changes | Practical effect of increasing it | Important limit or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support | The assistance multiplier relative to that mode’s standard support. | More motor assistance for the same rider effort. | Bosch presents a range from −5 to +5. −5 is approximately 50% of the mode’s standard support and +5 approximately 150%. The drive unit’s maximum is never exceeded, and higher support generally consumes more battery. |
| Dynamics | How gently or immediately the drive responds when you start or change effort. | Quicker, stronger-feeling acceleration and a more immediate response. | High dynamics can help on a hill start but can also make the eBike harder to handle, especially at low speed or on loose ground. |
| Maximum torque | The greatest turning force available, particularly noticeable at low cadence. | Stronger pull from a slow start and more help on steep ramps. | More torque can use more energy. Support and torque interact, so a high support setting paired with a low torque limit may prevent the selected support level from being reached. |
| Maximum power | How quickly the drive reaches maximum support and how readily it maintains that support, especially while climbing. | Faster delivery of sustained assistance on demanding gradients. | Bosch describes adjustment in 25-watt increments on supported controls. Lower power can suit flat or relaxed riding and may reduce battery use. |
| Maximum speed | The speed up to which the motor continues to assist. | A higher available assistance speed, only within the bike’s permitted setting. | Reducing it may conserve battery or feel safer. Assistance remains subject to the maximum permitted in your country; the setting cannot legally raise that limit. |
How the sliders work together
The controls are not five independent “more is better” switches. They describe different parts of the same assistance event, and the drive unit applies its own limits when the values conflict.
Support versus torque
Support expresses how much assistance the mode tries to provide, while torque is the force available to produce it. If support is high but maximum torque is low, the motor may not deliver the support level you selected when you push a high gear or start on a steep slope. Conversely, raising torque while leaving support low does not necessarily make the mode feel continuously powerful; it mainly gives the system more force to call on when the mode requests it.

Dynamics is most obvious as the motor comes in. A high value can make a loaded bike or hill start easier, but that same quick response can surprise a rider who is turning, balancing on a narrow trail or starting on a slippery surface. If the bike feels abrupt, reduce dynamics before changing every other value.

Power and sustained climbing
Maximum power affects how quickly the system reaches and holds its strongest support. It matters more during a long climb than during a short, level acceleration. Lowering it can make a mode calmer and less demanding on the battery, while raising it can help maintain assistance when the gradient persists.
Speed and legal limits
The speed control is a ceiling for motor assistance, not a way to remove the legal limit. Setting a lower ceiling can prevent the motor from continuing to push as you approach a speed that feels uncomfortable. The actual cutoff remains governed by the applicable law and the bike’s certified configuration.
Choose a setup for the way you ride
Rather than copying another rider’s numbers, match the feel of a mode to a route and your own control. Bosch’s descriptions provide useful comparison axes: assistance strength and battery use, startup response, low-cadence torque, ability to maintain support on a climb and the assistance-speed ceiling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Riding situation | Prioritize | Possible direction | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat commuting or relaxed riding | Predictable response and range. | Moderate or reduced support, dynamics and power; keep torque sufficient for starts. | Too little support can make frequent junction starts tiring, while too much dynamics can feel jumpy in traffic. |
| Long, steady climbs | Sustained assistance and manageable battery use. | Use enough support and power to maintain cadence; raise torque only if low-speed starts are difficult. | High values can drain the battery faster, and a low torque ceiling can undermine a high support choice. |
| Short, steep starts | Immediate but controllable launch. | Increase dynamics or torque in small steps rather than maximizing every slider. | Test on a clear slope. Excessive dynamics can make balance harder. |
| Carrying a load | Controlled start and force at low cadence. | A cargo-oriented mode, when available, with enough torque and a response you can manage. | Extra mass lengthens braking and changes handling; motor settings do not replace cautious speed control. |
| Technical trail riding | Fine control over traction and acceleration. | Use a dynamic mountain-bike mode, when available, and choose a response that does not overwhelm loose surfaces. | Test standing and seated starts. A setting that feels strong on pavement may be difficult on rocks or wet roots. |
These directions are starting points, not Bosch presets. Change one value at a time so you can identify which adjustment caused a new sensation or battery result.

Update Flow and the eBike before looking for new modes
Bosch says newly released riding modes can be transferred through Flow after the latest app and eBike software are installed. If a mode mentioned in Bosch information is not listed, update both sides of the system, reconnect, and revisit Custom riding modes.
- Install any pending eBike Flow update from your phone’s app store.
- Connect to the eBike and check for an available eBike software or system update in Flow.
- Keep the bike powered and connected for the entire transfer. Follow the app’s instructions if it asks you to restart.
- After the update completes, reopen the eBike home screen and check eBike settings → Custom riding modes → Edit list.
Updating cannot create a mode that the manufacturer has excluded. Mode availability still depends on the drive unit and eBike type, and the manufacturer may block later configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a missing mode, slider or edit button
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Custom riding modes is missing | The eBike may not use a compatible smart system, or Flow is not connected to it. | Confirm the model’s smart-system compatibility, turn the eBike on, connect in Flow and check again. |
| Edit list is unavailable | The eBike is moving, switched off or not actively connected. | Stop completely, switch on the eBike, establish the connection and reopen the settings. |
| Fewer than four modes appear | Four is a maximum, not a promise. The drive unit or manufacturer may provide fewer modes. | Install current app and eBike software. If the list is still shorter, it is probably the bike’s configuration. |
| A slider described by Bosch is absent | That control is not supported for this drive unit, mode or manufacturer setup. | Use the controls shown by Flow; do not infer a hidden value or attempt an unofficial override. |
| Changes do not transfer | The connection dropped or an update is pending. | Reconnect, keep the bike stationary, complete updates and apply the change again. |
| The mode feels weaker than its support value suggests | Another limit, such as maximum torque or power, may be restricting delivery. | Review the related controls and change one value at a time. High support with low torque is a specific combination Bosch warns can prevent the selected support from being reached. |
If the app remains unable to change a selection after a successful connection and current software, the manufacturer may have locked that configuration. A specialist eBike shop can identify the installed drive unit and explain which restrictions apply; it cannot necessarily remove a manufacturer or legal limit.

- Record the original values or take a screenshot before editing.
- Change one slider by one small step.
- Test a level start, a controlled stop and a gentle incline.
- Notice startup smoothness, steering control, cadence, noise and battery consumption.
- Return to the previous value if the bike feels abrupt, difficult to hold or less efficient than intended.
- Only then decide whether another control needs adjustment.
Do not judge a setting solely by a single short acceleration. Power and battery behavior become clearer over a representative ride that includes the terrain where you intend to use the mode.
Battery, output and legal expectations
More assistance generally means more energy use, although terrain, rider effort, tire pressure, temperature, load and speed also affect range. Reducing support, power or the assistance-speed ceiling can help conserve charge, but no slider promises a fixed percentage of additional range.
Bosch’s −5 and +5 support figures are relative to the mode’s standard support: approximately 50% at −5 and 150% at +5. They are not a promise that every ride will use exactly half or one and a half times the battery. The drive unit still enforces its own maximum, and the legal assistance-speed limit remains in force.

When professional help is appropriate
Contact a specialist eBike shop when you cannot identify the drive-unit configuration, the app repeatedly fails to complete an update, the bike behaves unexpectedly after a setting change, or a manufacturer restriction prevents a configuration you need. Bring the eBike, the phone running Flow and any error message. Do not attempt firmware modifications or wiring changes to obtain unavailable modes; those actions can create safety, warranty and compliance problems.
Quick Recap
Quick reference
