Look well ahead, leave enough time and space, reduce speed for the actual conditions, and make steering, braking, and acceleration inputs smoothly. If a problem starts, stabilize the vehicle first instead of snapping the wheel, stomping the brake, or making a sudden lane change.
The right response depends on what happened: drifting onto a shoulder, a tire blowout, hydroplaning, a slippery-surface skid, and a locked-wheel skid are different events. The steps below draw on California Department of Motor Vehicles guidance and U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration material. California’s handbook advice is state-specific; follow your own jurisdiction’s rules and your vehicle owner’s manual, especially for anti-lock braking system (ABS) operation.

What does “overcorrecting” mean?
Overcorrection is a large, abrupt control input made in response to a smaller problem. Examples include jerking the wheel back after a tire drops onto a shoulder, braking hard during a blowout, or turning sharply when a vehicle begins to slide. A sudden input can transfer weight faster than the tires can handle, causing a second loss of control, a spin, or a move into another lane.

Correcting well means restoring a safe path progressively. Keep both hands on the wheel when possible, look toward the open path you want to follow, and make one measured change at a time. If the vehicle is unstable, your first objective is balance and traction; only then should you reposition the vehicle or stop.

How can you prevent a mistake from becoming an emergency?
Scan farther ahead
California’s Driver’s Handbook advises scanning at least 10 seconds ahead and using a three-second following rule. Those are California handbook recommendations, not universal legal standards. Looking beyond the vehicle immediately in front gives you time to notice stopped traffic, a narrowing lane, standing water, debris, or a curve and to slow gradually.
Keep your eyes moving between the road ahead, mirrors, and likely conflict areas. Do not stare at a hazard directly in front of the hood; drivers tend to steer toward what they fixate on. Aim your vision at the safe path around the problem while continuing to monitor the hazard.
Read the California guidance in Section 8: Safe Driving.
Leave a usable escape space
A following gap is not just a stopping-distance calculation. It gives you room to make a gentle steering correction if traffic brakes, a vehicle merges, or you discover water or ice. Increase the gap when visibility, traction, or your own alertness is reduced. A three-second interval is a California handbook technique; add more time when conditions demand it.
Choose speed for conditions, not only the sign
NHTSA warns that a posted limit can still be unsafe when road, weather, traffic, or visibility conditions require a lower speed. Slow before a curve, lane reduction, crest, or patch of standing water. Braking or turning after you have entered the hazard requires more traction than reducing speed in advance.

Make inputs separate and smooth
- Release the accelerator progressively instead of lifting abruptly.
- Brake in a straight line before a curve when possible, then steer steadily.
- Turn the wheel with controlled pressure; do not add rapid, opposite steering corrections.
- Accelerate gently until the vehicle is straight and traction is available.
Wet, icy, snowy, or loose surfaces make abrupt inputs especially risky because the tires have less grip available for braking and turning at the same time.

A roadway departure is a transition problem: one or more tires are on a different surface, and a sharp return can make the vehicle shoot across the lane. California DMV’s emergency guidance is deliberately gradual.
- Grip the wheel firmly. Keep the vehicle pointed as steadily as possible and avoid a panicked yank.
- Ease off the accelerator. Let the vehicle’s speed begin to fall without an abrupt lift.
- Brake gently. Use controlled pressure rather than an immediate hard stop.
- Check traffic behind and beside you. A return to the pavement is not safe if it moves into another vehicle.
- Steer carefully back onto the pavement. Re-enter at a shallow angle when the path is clear, then straighten the wheel smoothly.
California DMV specifically warns: “Do not pull or turn your steering wheel with too much force.” A forceful snap can send the vehicle into oncoming traffic or cause a swerve across multiple lanes. Read the complete state direction in Section 8: Safe Driving (Continued).
If the shoulder is narrow, soft, or obstructed, maintain control and reduce speed before attempting to return. If traffic makes an immediate re-entry unsafe, keep the vehicle stable on the available surface while looking for a safe, gradual path rather than forcing the maneuver.
What should I do if a tire blows out while driving?
A blowout can create noise, vibration, a pull, or a sudden change in steering effort. The goal is not to stop instantly; it is to keep the vehicle balanced and controllable long enough to slow and reach a safe stopping place. NHTSA states that the procedure is the same for a front or rear tire, although the sensation can differ.

- Hold the steering wheel with both hands. Keep your arms ready to resist the pull or vibration.
- Maintain speed briefly if possible and safe. Do not slam the brakes or make a sudden lane change.
- Release the accelerator gradually. Allow speed to decrease without an abrupt weight transfer.
- Steer as needed to stabilize. Look and steer toward the intended safe direction, keeping corrections small.
- Slow after the vehicle is stable. Move toward a shoulder or other safe area only when you can do so without crossing traffic unexpectedly.
- Stop and secure the vehicle. Once clear of travel lanes, follow your vehicle’s roadside and warning-equipment procedures.
Immediate hard braking or an abrupt lift from the accelerator can worsen the disturbance. If the vehicle is already unstable, prioritize staying in your lane and avoiding other road users over reaching the shoulder quickly.
How tire maintenance reduces risk
NHTSA recommends checking tire pressure monthly when the tires are cold and using the pressure listed on the vehicle placard or in the owner’s manual, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. The agency’s 2026 TireWise page reports that 19 percent of consumers properly inflate their tires and says properly inflated tires can extend average tire life by 4,700 miles. Those figures concern maintenance, not a guaranteed outcome during a blowout.
NHTSA also reports 511 people died in tire-related crashes in 2024. That is a tire-related crash count, not a measure of overcorrection or of all driving errors. Inspect for damage and unusual wear, and have alignment checked when the vehicle veers on a straight, level road. NHTSA explains that “A wheel alignment maximizes the life of your tires and prevents your car from veering to the right or left when driving on a straight, level road.”
How do I steer if my car starts to skid?
There is no safe universal rule such as “always turn into the skid” or “always pump the brakes.” The trigger, the available traction, and the vehicle’s braking equipment determine the response. California DMV treats slippery-surface skids, hydroplaning, and locked-wheel skids separately and directs drivers to identify their ABS configuration in the owner’s manual.
Slippery-surface skid
For the slippery-surface skid scenario described in the California handbook:
- Slowly remove your foot from the accelerator.
- Avoid the brakes in that specific scenario.
- Steer in the direction of the skid.
- Try to bring a wheel onto dry pavement to regain traction.
This sequence is not a blanket instruction for every loss of control. It applies to the handbook’s described slippery-surface skid; a vehicle with locked wheels or a different emergency may require different pedal instructions.

Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning occurs when water separates the tires from the road. Treat it as a sudden loss of available traction: keep the steering correction modest, ease off the accelerator, and avoid a panic brake or sharp turn while the tires regain contact. Do not chase the vehicle with rapid left-right steering. The California handbook includes hydroplaning within its slippery-road discussion; consult the full California safe-driving section for the state’s treatment.

Locked-wheel skid and ABS
Locked-wheel behavior is different from the slippery-surface procedure above. California DMV provides separate instructions for four-wheel ABS, rear-wheel ABS, and front-wheel ABS, and tells drivers to use the owner’s manual to determine which system is installed. The correct pedal technique can therefore vary by vehicle.
Before an emergency, locate the ABS information in the manual and understand the warning-light behavior for your vehicle. During a skid, do not substitute a remembered rule from another car. Follow the equipment-specific procedure, keep looking toward the safe path, and avoid adding abrupt steering while the tires are at the limit of grip.
The handbook’s distinctions and equipment warning are in Section 8: Safe Driving. If you are unsure whether your vehicle has ABS, do not guess during an emergency; learn the system before driving in conditions where a skid is likely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I correct a lane mistake without creating another hazard?
A correction that ignores surrounding traffic can turn a small drift into a sideswipe. California DMV’s safe-driver checklist recommends a deliberate lane-change sequence:
- Signal early enough to communicate your intention.
- Check the rear-view and side mirrors.
- Look over your shoulder to check the blind spot.
- Change lanes only when the space is clear, then cancel the signal.
Keep both hands on opposite sides of the wheel when practical. For a turn, signal and reduce speed before steering. If you miss an exit or turn, continue to a legal place to change direction; do not cross several lanes at the last moment.

Common mistakes and the smallest useful correction
| Trigger | Tempting reaction | Lower-risk correction | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hazard appears late | Stare at it and jerk the wheel | Look beyond it, ease off the accelerator, and steer toward the open path | Preserves time and reduces rapid weight transfer |
| Vehicle drifts onto shoulder | Snap back onto pavement | Grip firmly, release accelerator, brake gently, check traffic, and re-enter gradually | Avoids a cross-lane swerve |
| Tire blowout | Immediate hard braking | Hold with both hands, maintain speed briefly if safe, release accelerator gradually, then slow after stabilization | Keeps the vehicle balanced while speed falls |
| Slippery-surface skid | Brake hard and countersteer repeatedly | Use the California handbook’s specific sequence: ease off accelerator, avoid brakes, steer in skid direction, seek dry pavement | Allows traction to return without adding abrupt inputs |
| ABS or locked-wheel event | Apply a memorized one-size-fits-all rule | Use the procedure for the vehicle’s documented ABS configuration | Brake behavior differs among four-wheel, rear-wheel, and front-wheel systems |
| Blind-spot lane move | Rely on mirrors alone | Signal, check mirrors, look over the shoulder, then move only if clear | Detects vehicles hidden beside the car |
How should you practice these corrections?
Emergency reactions are difficult to learn for the first time in traffic. Read your owner’s manual before you need the information, identify the ABS type, review tire-pressure specifications, and learn where the hazard lights and roadside equipment controls are located. Practice visual scanning, following-distance timing, smooth braking, and mirror-plus-shoulder checks during ordinary drives.
For hands-on skid, braking, or recovery practice, choose supervised instruction appropriate to your vehicle and local conditions. NHTSA’s Teen Safe Driving resources emphasize driver education for novice motorists; the same principle applies to adults refreshing skills. Neither a handbook nor this article can replace vehicle-specific instruction or supervised practice.
California DMV provides its handbook in online, PDF, and eBook formats through its Driver’s Handbooks page. Drivers outside California should use their own licensing authority’s current handbook for jurisdiction-specific rules.
A calm decision sequence to remember
- Identify the event: departure, blowout, hydroplaning, slippery-surface skid, or locked-wheel skid.
- Stabilize: keep both hands on the wheel when possible and avoid the largest available input.
- Reduce speed appropriately: ease off or brake according to the event and the vehicle manual.
- Look for the safe path: account for traffic, shoulders, dry pavement, and obstacles.
- Make one measured correction: steer progressively, then straighten and reassess.
- Stop when stable and safe: move out of active lanes only when the path is clear.
Prevention remains the most reliable correction: scan at least 10 seconds ahead as California’s handbook suggests, leave a usable gap, slow for actual conditions, and keep every control input smooth. When an emergency does occur, balance and controllability matter more than a fast, dramatic reaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is California’s three-second following rule a legal requirement everywhere?
No. It is a following-distance technique recommended in the California Driver’s Handbook. Other jurisdictions may publish different guidance, and conditions may require more than three seconds.
Should I always turn into a skid?
No. The correct response depends on the type of skid and the vehicle’s braking equipment. California separates slippery-surface skids from locked-wheel skids and ABS configurations, so use the procedure in your owner’s manual rather than a universal slogan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is the first priority during a tire blowout?
Keep the vehicle balanced and controllable. Hold the wheel with both hands, avoid an abrupt brake application or accelerator release, stabilize the vehicle, and slow toward a safe stopping area when the path is clear.
Can reading a handbook replace emergency-driving practice?
No. Written guidance helps you prepare, but supervised, vehicle-specific practice is needed to learn braking and recovery behavior safely.
