Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a car starts to slide on a public road, treat it as an emergency skid, not as an opportunity to practice drifting. Look toward the clear path, make smooth steering corrections, and avoid abrupt braking, acceleration, or extra steering. When the rear slides, countersteer in the direction the rear is moving; as the car straightens, smoothly unwind the steering so it does not snap into a second skid. Throttle technique depends on the vehicle and the situation, so there is no single pedal command that is safe for every car.
Deliberate drifting is a motorsport activity. Develop that skill only on a closed course or skid pad with qualified supervision. The sequence below is for regaining control when traction is unexpectedly lost.

What a drift or skid means in a safety situation
A skid happens when one or more tires cannot generate enough grip for the steering, braking, or acceleration the driver is asking for. “Drift” is often used casually for any visible slide, but the useful safety question is which end of the car has stopped following the intended path.

Oversteer occurs when the rear tires lose enough traction that the back of the vehicle moves outward relative to the turn. The car rotates more than the driver intended. This is the slide for which countersteering is required: the driver turns the front wheels in the direction the rear is moving, then reduces that steering angle as the vehicle comes back into line.

Understeer: the front pushes wide
Understeer occurs when the front tires lose the ability to follow the turn, so the vehicle continues wider than the steering direction suggests. Turning the wheel farther or making a sudden pedal movement does not create grip. Ontario and Colorado operator guidance both warn that hard braking and abrupt steering, acceleration, or braking changes can worsen a skid. The priority is to look toward the available path and make calm, progressive inputs while avoiding a larger demand from the tires.
Why identifying the slide matters
Countersteering is appropriate for a rear slide, but automatically applying the same large steering movement during front-tire understeer can make the situation worse. First notice whether the rear is rotating away from the path or the front is refusing to turn. If you cannot identify it instantly, keep your eyes on the escape path, stop adding steering, and make no abrupt pedal input while the car’s behavior becomes clear.
The emergency recovery sequence
Use this order when a slide begins. The movements should be deliberate and smooth rather than hurried jerks. The sequence is consistent with guidance from Colorado, Ontario, California, Michigan, and the UK, while recognizing that pedal technique varies with vehicle layout and circumstances.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. Look at the path you want to take
Direct your eyes toward the open lane or other clear route, not at the object you fear hitting and not at the direction the car is currently sliding. Colorado Department of Education operator training puts it plainly: “Keep your eyes up and look where you want to go, focus on your desired path, not where the car is currently sliding.” Your visual target gives your steering a useful reference and helps prevent fixation on a curb, guardrail, parked vehicle, or oncoming traffic.
Choose the safest available path within your lane or roadway. Do not make a dramatic lane change merely to escape a slide if that would create a new collision risk. Keep scanning beyond the immediate space so you can see what the car will meet after it regains grip.
2. Decide whether the rear or front is sliding
A rear slide feels like the back of the vehicle is coming around. The nose may point away from the direction you want to travel, and the car may begin rotating. A front slide feels as though the steering wheel is turned but the vehicle continues toward the outside of the bend. This distinction determines whether countersteering is needed.

Do not spend several seconds trying to label the event. Make the smallest useful diagnosis while keeping your vision on the clear path. If the rear is moving, proceed to the countersteer step. If the front is pushing, stop increasing steering and avoid adding a sudden brake or throttle demand.
3. Countersteer smoothly when the rear moves
Turn the steering wheel in the direction the rear of the vehicle is moving. If the rear slides to the right, steer to the right; if it slides to the left, steer to the left. This is steering into the skid, not blindly turning toward the original corner. The UK Highway Code, Rule 119, gives the same example: “if the rear of the vehicle skids to the right, steer immediately to the right to recover.”
Use enough steering to bring the front wheels into line with the vehicle’s travel, but do not make a sudden full-lock movement unless the developing slide genuinely requires it. The correction may need to change quickly as the rear regains traction. Keep your hands ready to move with the car rather than holding a fixed angle.
4. Keep every input progressive
Abrupt steering, braking, or acceleration can transfer the tire demand faster than the available grip can handle. Ontario guidance warns against hard braking and overly aggressive turning or acceleration; Colorado guidance likewise warns that sudden changes in steering, acceleration, or braking can worsen a skid.
That does not mean you should freeze. It means you should make one measured correction at a time, observe the car’s response, and adjust smoothly. Avoid sawing rapidly at the wheel, stamping on the brake, or abruptly lifting or flooring the accelerator. The surface may offer a little more grip a moment later, and a sharp input at that moment can trigger another slide.

5. Manage the pedals according to the vehicle and slide
There is no universal “always lift” or “always stay on the throttle” rule. Michigan State Police guidance advises reducing throttle input for rear-tire oversteer. The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training instructor manual, dated August 2021, notes that appropriate throttle may be needed in a front-wheel-drive vehicle experiencing rear-wheel oversteer. Those instructions are not contradictory: drivetrain layout and the exact balance of the car change the result.

For a rear slide, avoid a sudden increase in power. If you are driving a vehicle for which reducing throttle is the appropriate response, ease off progressively rather than snapping completely off. In some front-wheel-drive situations, a controlled amount of power can help the driven front tires pull the vehicle toward the intended path; that is a vehicle-specific technique, not permission to accelerate aggressively. If you do not know how your car responds, keep the pedal movement small and smooth and concentrate first on the steering correction.
For front-tire understeer, adding more steering or abruptly changing the throttle does not manufacture grip. Reduce the demand on the tires progressively and keep looking through the clear path. Avoid hard braking unless a collision is otherwise unavoidable and you understand how your vehicle’s braking system behaves; the official guidance cited here specifically warns that hard braking can cause or worsen a skid.
6. Unwind the steering as grip returns
As the car straightens and the tires begin to grip again, smoothly remove the countersteering input. The California POST manual instructs drivers to “smoothly take out the steering you have put in as the vehicle is recovering.” Leaving the wheel turned into the skid after the rear has recovered can send the car into a secondary skid in the opposite direction.
Unwind at the same pace the vehicle is aligning. Do not wait until the steering wheel is suddenly forced back by the tires, and do not flick it through your hands faster than the car can respond. Finish with the wheels pointed along the path you actually want to travel, then make only small corrections.
Rear-slide and front-slide responses at a glance
| What the car is doing | What you may feel | Primary steering response | Input to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rear oversteer | The back moves outward and the vehicle begins to rotate | Steer in the direction the rear is moving, then smoothly unwind as the car straightens | Abrupt opposite steering, hard braking, or a sudden power increase |
| Front understeer | The nose runs wide and the car does not follow the turn | Look toward the clear path; stop adding steering and make progressive corrections as grip returns | More steering lock, hard braking, or an abrupt throttle change |
The table describes the control priorities, not a guarantee that every car will react identically. Tire condition, surface, speed, load, drivetrain, and electronic systems all affect how quickly grip returns.
Why smooth corrections work better
Tires have a finite amount of grip to share between cornering, braking, and acceleration. When a driver suddenly asks for more of one task, less remains for the others. A quick steering jerk can overload the front tires; a hard brake application can destabilize a car that is already rotating; an abrupt throttle change can increase or reduce rear traction faster than the driver can respond.

Vehicle motion also changes during the recovery. The steering angle that is correct while the rear is sliding may be wrong a fraction of a second later when the rear tires regain grip. That is why countersteering is a sequence rather than a single fixed command: apply it to align the front wheels, monitor the rotation, and unwind before the car snaps past the desired heading.

- Use one clear visual target: the open route you want the vehicle to follow.
- Make small, timely corrections: avoid waiting until the slide is extreme, but do not overcorrect.
- Change pedals progressively: do not combine a large steering movement with a large brake or throttle movement unless avoiding an immediate collision requires it.
- Expect a second movement: once grip returns, be ready to unwind the wheel and keep the car from oscillating.
Public-road emergency response versus deliberate drifting
Recovering from an unintended skid is a defensive driving skill. Deliberate drifting is a controlled motorsport maneuver that intentionally keeps the tires beyond normal cornering grip. The two situations may share the word “countersteer,” but they have different goals. On a road, the goal is to restore traction, keep the vehicle in a safe path, and avoid other road users. It is not to hold a slide for style, speed, or practice.
Do not use an empty-looking public road, wet intersection, industrial estate, or parking lot to learn drifting. Pavement can hide pedestrians, drainage changes, curbs, poles, debris, and vehicles entering from another access point. A correction that works in a controlled exercise may be unsafe when traffic, roadside objects, or a different surface is present.
If you want to learn car control for motorsport, choose a large range or skid pad closed to public traffic. Colorado operator guidance identifies a range or skid pad as the place for practice, and qualified supervision is a sensible additional safeguard. Begin with low-speed exercises that teach recognizing understeer and oversteer, making a measured correction, and unwinding the wheel as grip returns. A venue that encourages uncontrolled road behavior is the wrong venue for safety training.
How to choose a safe practice venue
No particular provider is required. Before booking any exercise, ask practical questions about the environment, instruction, and vehicle.
| Screening question | What a reassuring answer looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the surface closed to public traffic? | A physically controlled range or skid pad with no ordinary traffic passing through | It removes unpredictable road users and roadside hazards while you learn. |
| Who supervises the exercise? | An instructor who can demonstrate recovery and intervene with clear, calm coaching | Unsupervised experimentation can turn a small slide into a collision. |
| What vehicle and surface are used? | The program identifies the vehicle type, tire setup, and surface conditions | Responses vary with drivetrain, tires, load, and available grip. |
| Does the curriculum teach recovery? | It covers visual focus, smooth countersteering, pedal discipline, and unwinding the wheel | The objective should be control and recovery, not encouraging road-side stunts. |
| What are the operating limits? | Clear speed, weather, vehicle inspection, helmet, and cancellation rules | Defined limits reduce the chance that an exercise becomes an uncontrolled test. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Staring at the obstacle
Fixating on the curb or vehicle you are trying to avoid can pull your attention away from the available escape path. Lift your eyes and choose the route with the most space. The Colorado guidance specifically contrasts looking where the car is sliding with focusing on the desired path.

Holding the countersteer too long
Countersteer is not a permanent steering setting. When the rear aligns, the same steering angle can produce a snap in the opposite direction. Follow the recovery with a smooth unwind, as directed in the California POST manual.
Braking as a reflex
A panicked brake application can add another demand while the tires are already beyond their grip. Ontario guidance warns against hard braking during a skid. Keep the response progressive and prioritize the clear path; if a collision is imminent, braking may still be necessary, but apply it with awareness that it can change the vehicle’s balance.
Adding power to “pull out” of every slide
Throttle advice depends on drivetrain and circumstance. Michigan State Police guidance recommends reducing throttle for rear-tire oversteer, while the California POST manual recognizes that appropriate throttle may be useful in a front-wheel-drive rear-oversteer situation. Treat these as conditional instructions, not opposing slogans.

Making several large inputs at once
Large steering, brake, and throttle changes can mask which input helped or hurt. Separate the actions: look, identify the slide, correct the steering, then manage the pedal and unwind as the car responds.
Scenario playbook
The rear moves right in a left-hand bend
- Look toward the open path through the bend, not at the outside obstacle.
- Steer right, in the direction the rear is moving, to countersteer.
- Keep the movement smooth and avoid a hard brake or sudden acceleration.
- As the car points along the path again, smoothly unwind the right-hand steering input.
- Once stable, make only small corrections and reassess speed and road conditions.
This example follows the UK Highway Code’s Rule 119 wording for a rear skid to the right. The same principle reverses for a rear slide to the left.
The front runs wide in a turn
- Keep your eyes on the path you need, rather than adding visual fixation to the outside of the corner.
- Stop increasing steering lock; the front tires are already failing to follow the turn.
- Avoid hard braking and abrupt throttle changes while the vehicle is unsettled.
- Make progressive corrections as grip returns and guide the vehicle back toward the intended path.
The precise pedal response depends on the vehicle and surface. If the car does not respond as expected, prioritize avoiding obstacles and reducing further abrupt inputs rather than trying to force a particular technique.
After the car is straight again
Recovery is not complete the instant the vehicle stops rotating. Hold the safest path, reduce speed smoothly when the car is stable, and scan for traffic or objects that the original slide may have brought you toward. Do not immediately accelerate to the previous speed. Notice whether the steering wheel is centered, whether the vehicle pulls to one side, and whether a tire, wheel, or suspension component may have been damaged by a curb or other contact.
If the car continues to feel unstable, a warning light appears, a tire is losing pressure, or you cannot maintain a straight path, stop in a safe location and arrange professional assistance rather than continuing at normal speed. A successful steering correction cannot repair mechanical or tire damage caused during the skid.
Quick Recap
What to remember under stress
- Look where you want the vehicle to travel.
- For a rear slide, steer in the direction the rear is moving.
- Use smooth steering, braking, and throttle changes.
- Unwind the countersteering as the car straightens.
- Do not treat one pedal rule as universal; drivetrain and circumstances matter.
- Practice only on a closed range or skid pad, preferably with qualified supervision.
