Start by identifying your Outback’s model year, trim and multimedia system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are confirmed as standard on every 2026 Outback trim, while Subaru’s 2025 information describes wireless integration as available across the range but standard only on listed trims. Earlier Outbacks may require a USB connection. Once you know which system your vehicle has, use the matching wired or wireless procedure below.
What you need to check before connecting
CarPlay and Android Auto do not work identically in every Outback. Subaru has changed multimedia hardware and feature availability between model years, so do not assume that a wireless procedure for a newer vehicle applies to an older one.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Model year and trim: Confirm both from the vehicle paperwork, the driver-door label or the vehicle information screen.
- Multimedia system: Use the owner’s manual for that exact vehicle. Subaru’s vehicle-resource page separates manuals and Apple- and Android-specific connection help by selected vehicle.
- Phone software: Unlock the phone before beginning. On an iPhone, Siri must be enabled for CarPlay. On an Android phone, Android Auto must be installed when the vehicle’s system requires the app.
- Connection method: Decide whether your Outback supports wireless integration or whether you will use the vehicle’s USB port.
- Cable and port: For wired use, the cable must carry data, not only power, and it must fit both the phone and the vehicle port.
- Permission readiness: Keep the phone unlocked during first setup so you can approve prompts, compare the pairing PIN and allow the vehicle to use the phone’s driving interface.
Subaru’s 2026 feature information describes a 12.1-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on all 2026 Outback trims. Subaru’s 2025 information describes an 11.6-inch touchscreen and wireless integration as standard on the trims it lists, so the 2025 statement should not be extended automatically to other years or trims. Screen size alone is not a compatibility test.

The sources do not establish wireless support as universal across every Outback year and trim. If your manual does not describe wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, use the wired procedure instead of trying to infer compatibility from the appearance of the touchscreen. Wired is also a useful fallback when wireless pairing is unavailable or unreliable.

How to connect a wired iPhone with Apple CarPlay
For the Subaru multimedia interface covered by the manual
- On the iPhone, open Settings, find the Siri controls and turn Siri on.
- Start the Outback and leave the multimedia system on its normal home screen.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s designated USB port with a data-capable USB cable. A charging-only cable cannot transfer the CarPlay connection.
- Unlock the iPhone and respond to every permission or setup prompt that appears.
- Wait for the CarPlay home screen. If it does not appear, open the vehicle menu and select the CarPlay icon.
- If CarPlay is still unavailable, open the vehicle’s device settings and confirm that CarPlay is enabled for that phone.
Some cables are not supported by the multimedia system. If the phone charges but CarPlay never appears, replace the cable before changing other settings. Also try the USB input identified for smartphone integration rather than a nearby outlet intended only for charging.
Specific guidance for 2020–2022 Outback and Legacy
Subaru Customer Support’s instructions for 2020–2022 Outback and Legacy models use the same basic sequence with two important cable details:
- Enable Siri on the iPhone.
- Plug the phone into the vehicle USB port with an MFi-certified cable.
- Tap Allow on the iPhone when the permission prompt appears.
- Select Apple CarPlay on the vehicle display if it does not launch by itself.
These instructions are specific to that model era. They do not prove that every Outback requires a cable, because newer trims may support wireless CarPlay. If you use a replacement cable, match the iPhone connector and the vehicle’s USB input; certification and data capability both matter for this older wired procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to connect wireless Apple CarPlay
Use these steps only when the exact Outback trim and multimedia system support wireless CarPlay.
- Enable Siri on the iPhone.
- On the Outback touchscreen, open Bluetooth & Devices.
- Choose the option to add or search for a device.
- Select the iPhone when it appears in the search results.
- Compare the PIN shown on the vehicle and the iPhone. Continue only when the numbers match.
- Follow the prompts on both screens and accept the CarPlay setup prompt if one appears.
- Allow a short moment for the CarPlay interface to load.
For an iPhone that was paired previously, open Bluetooth & Devices, select that phone and turn on Use for Apple CarPlay. A previous Bluetooth registration alone may not activate CarPlay. If several phones are stored, select the intended phone rather than assuming the most recently paired device will be used.

Wireless operation depends on the phone having Bluetooth and Wi-Fi available. A USB cable is not needed after a successful wireless setup, although a cable can still be useful for charging. If the phone appears in the Bluetooth list but the CarPlay prompt never arrives, check the specific Use for Apple CarPlay setting before deleting the pairing.
How to connect a wired Android phone with Android Auto
For the Subaru multimedia interface covered by the manual
- Install Android Auto on the phone if the phone’s software requires the app.
- Unlock the phone and connect it to the Outback’s designated USB port with a data-capable cable.
- Read and accept the Android Auto permissions and safety prompts on the phone.
- Wait for the Android Auto home screen. If it does not open, select Android Auto from the vehicle’s menu.
- Open the vehicle’s device settings and confirm that Use for Android Auto is enabled for the connected phone.
A phone that only charges is not proof that the connection is working. The cable must carry data, and the port must be the one connected to the multimedia system rather than a charging-only outlet. If Android Auto asks for permissions again after a software update, complete those prompts while parked before trying to drive.

For 2020–2022 vehicles, Subaru Customer Support recommends a high-quality OEM cable. Follow this sequence:
- Connect the Android phone to the vehicle USB port with the recommended cable.
- Accept the first-use prompts on the phone.
- Select Android Auto on the Outback display if it does not launch automatically.
This is model-era support guidance, not a requirement for every later Outback. Cable and menu behavior can also change when the phone receives a software update. If a cable works for charging but fails for Android Auto, test another known data-capable cable rather than judging it by its appearance.

What to do when CarPlay or Android Auto does not start
The phone charges but the app does not appear
- Replace the cable with a confirmed data-capable cable. Charging-only cables cannot establish CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Try the USB port identified in the vehicle manual for smartphone integration.
- For an iPhone, confirm that Siri is enabled.
- For Android, confirm that Android Auto is installed when the vehicle system requires it.
- Open the multimedia menu and select CarPlay or Android Auto manually.
- Unlock the phone and repeat the permission prompts; a locked phone can prevent first-time approval.
The vehicle cannot find the phone wirelessly
- Confirm that the Outback trim actually supports wireless CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Open Bluetooth & Devices on the vehicle and start a fresh search.
- Keep the phone unlocked during initial pairing.
- Compare the PIN on both screens before accepting the pairing request.
The phone is paired but the integration remains disabled
A phone can be registered for Bluetooth without being selected for the smartphone platform. In Bluetooth & Devices, select the registered phone and turn on Use for Apple CarPlay or Use for Android Auto, as appropriate. This setting is especially important when a phone was paired for calls before CarPlay or Android Auto was enabled.
CarPlay setup fails during permission prompts
Check Siri first, then disconnect and reconnect the phone while it is unlocked. On 2020–2022 vehicles, Subaru specifically instructs iPhone users to tap Allow and select Apple CarPlay on the vehicle screen. If the prompt was dismissed, reconnecting the phone can bring it back.
Android Auto worked before but no longer connects
For 2020–2022 Outback and Legacy support cases, Subaru suggests opening Android Auto settings, going to Connected Cars and choosing Forget all cars. Reconnect the phone and repeat the setup prompts. If the problem remains, Subaru’s guidance suggests reinstalling Android Auto. Phone menus may use different wording after software updates, so look for the equivalent connected-vehicle or reset option.
The system rejects a cable
Subaru notes that some cables may not be supported. For older iPhone setups, use an MFi-certified Lightning-to-USB data cable. For older Android setups, use a high-quality OEM cable. Match the phone connector and vehicle USB port before buying a replacement; a cable is unnecessary when wireless integration is working.

Several phones are registered
Do not assume that every registered phone can use the platform at once. Select the intended device in Bluetooth & Devices and enable its relevant Use for… option. If the wrong phone launches, disable that phone’s platform setting or select the preferred device before starting the drive.
Choosing the right cable for a wired setup
A cable is useful only when the Outback and phone are being connected through USB. The practical requirement is a reliable data connection, not merely the ability to charge.
- Older iPhone with a Lightning connector: An MFi-certified Lightning-to-USB data cable is the cable type identified in Subaru’s 2020–2022 support instructions.
- Android phone: Use a high-quality OEM cable for the 2020–2022 support procedure, or another known data-capable cable when the vehicle manual permits it.
- Newer phone connector: Match the connector on the phone to the vehicle’s USB input and verify that the cable carries data.
- Wireless-capable Outback: Do not buy a cable solely to enable wireless CarPlay or Android Auto. Wireless pairing does not require one.
When shopping, the useful search description is MFi certified Lightning to USB cable for Apple CarPlay for an applicable older iPhone setup. Treat marketplace compatibility claims cautiously: match the connector, confirm data support and follow the vehicle manual. There is no established need in Subaru’s instructions for a wireless adapter or a replacement multimedia unit. First verify the year, trim, phone settings, USB port and cable before considering any additional hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the correct procedure for your Outback
| If your vehicle is… | Start with… | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A 2026 Outback | Wireless CarPlay or wireless Android Auto pairing through Bluetooth & Devices | Subaru describes wireless integration as standard on every 2026 trim |
| A 2025 Outback | Check the trim documentation, then use wireless or wired steps accordingly | Subaru’s 2025 information lists wireless integration as standard only on the trims specified there |
| A 2020–2022 Outback | The wired procedure with the appropriate cable | Subaru’s direct support instructions specify an MFi-certified iPhone cable or high-quality OEM Android cable |
| Another model year | Your exact owner’s manual and vehicle-specific Subaru connection help | The detailed multimedia interface steps may not apply unchanged to every year |
When the year or trim is uncertain, treat the owner’s manual as the authority for available connection methods. The same touchscreen size or a similar-looking menu does not establish that two model years support the same wireless features. Subaru’s vehicle-resource selector is useful because it ties the manual and phone-specific help to the vehicle you select.
Keeping the connection reliable
- Leave Siri enabled if you use CarPlay.
- Keep Android Auto installed when your vehicle system requires the app.
- Use a data-capable cable and the correct USB port for wired connections.
- Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi available for wireless connections.
- Respond to setup prompts while the phone is unlocked.
- If a registered phone stops launching the platform, check its Use for… setting in Bluetooth & Devices.
- When a phone or vehicle receives a software update, expect exact menu wording to change and consult the current vehicle and phone instructions.
- Complete pairing while parked, then confirm that the home screen opens before relying on the setup during a trip.
Bottom line for Outback owners
The dependable sequence is simple: identify the exact Outback year and trim, confirm whether its multimedia system supports wireless integration, then use either the USB procedure or Bluetooth & Devices pairing. Wired connections require a data cable and the correct port; older 2020–2022 support instructions add MFi certification for iPhone and a high-quality OEM cable for Android. Wireless connections require the phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, plus the appropriate CarPlay or Android Auto permission. If the interface does not launch, check the cable, port, phone setting and vehicle-specific Use for… selection before replacing hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Subaru Outback have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
No universal rule should be assumed. Subaru states that wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2026 Outback trim, while its 2025 information lists wireless integration as standard only on specified trims. Check the exact year, trim and multimedia manual for earlier vehicles.
Why does my phone charge but CarPlay or Android Auto does not open?
The cable may carry power but not data, or the USB outlet may be charging-only. Use the vehicle’s designated smartphone-integration port and a known data-capable cable. Also check Siri, Android Auto installation and the relevant vehicle menu.
Can I use a charging-only cable for CarPlay?
No. CarPlay and Android Auto need a data connection. A charging-only cable cannot establish the multimedia link.
What cable does a 2020–2022 Outback need for iPhone CarPlay?
Subaru’s model-era support instructions specify an MFi-certified cable. Match the iPhone connector and the vehicle USB input.
What should I do if Android Auto stops connecting?
For 2020–2022 Outback and Legacy support cases, Subaru suggests Android Auto settings, Connected Cars, then Forget all cars. Reconnect and repeat setup; reinstall Android Auto if the problem remains.
Why is my phone paired by Bluetooth but CarPlay or Android Auto is disabled?
Bluetooth registration and smartphone-platform authorization are separate. In Bluetooth & Devices, select the phone and enable Use for Apple CarPlay or Use for Android Auto.
Do I need a wireless adapter for my Outback?
The documented setup does not establish a need for one. First confirm the vehicle’s built-in wireless capability, phone settings and cable or pairing steps. A cable is unnecessary when wireless integration works.
