Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse ₹20 lakh as an on-road ceiling in your city, not as an ex-showroom filter. Registration or road tax, insurance and other location-dependent charges can push a car advertised below ₹20 lakh over budget. The reliable method is to obtain an itemised, current quote for the exact variant you can buy, then compare its safety equipment, powertrain, transmission, seating and comfort features with rival variants.
The word upcoming also needs care. In the 2026 announcements considered here, the refreshed Škoda Kushaq was announced with prices and deliveries on March 21, 2026, Maruti Suzuki said bookings were open for the September 2026 Baleno announcement, and Nissan described the Tekton as launched. Treat each model as announced, bookings-open or launched according to its latest official update rather than assuming every headline model is still pending.

What a ₹20 lakh car budget really means
A manufacturer’s starting price is normally ex-showroom. It excludes at least some combination of registration or road tax, insurance and applicable local taxes or fees. Those items differ by state and city, so there is no honest single national on-road price for a car under ₹20 lakh.
Set the ceiling before comparing models:
- Budget: ₹20,00,000 maximum on-road.
- Location: name the city and state where the car will be registered.
- Date: record when the quote was issued; tax tables, insurance premiums and manufacturer prices can change.
- Scope: decide whether accessories, extended warranty, service packages and financing charges are outside the ceiling.
An ex-showroom price is still useful for building a shortlist, but it is not an affordability decision. Your decision point is the dealer’s written total for the registration address.

How to handle the word “upcoming”
Model status affects whether a price and specification can be acted on today. Use these labels in your notes:
| Status | What it establishes | What you still need |
|---|---|---|
| Announced | The manufacturer has released information such as a starting price or specification. | Variant-wise price list, booking terms, final equipment and delivery timing. |
| Bookings open | The manufacturer is accepting reservations. | Allocation, waiting period, cancellation rules and a city-specific on-road quote. |
| Launched | The model has been introduced for sale. | Exact stock, selected variant, registration quote and insurance options. |
| Deliveries started | Customers are receiving cars. | Availability of the variant and colour you want, plus the current final invoice. |
For the 2026 examples in the official announcements, the refreshed Kushaq was announced by Škoda Auto India on March 21 with prices and deliveries, the September Baleno announcement from Maruti Suzuki said bookings were open, and Nissan’s announcement called the Tekton launched. Recheck each status and price immediately before publishing or paying a booking amount.
Step 1: Define the car you actually need
Comparing only model names hides differences that can change both price and suitability. Decide the use case first, then shortlist a body style and seating capacity.
Choose seating and body style
- Hatchback: usually easier to park and efficient for urban use; check rear-seat width and boot space if it will carry adults or luggage.
- Sedan: useful for a separate boot and highway stability; verify ground clearance for your regular roads.
- SUV or crossover: inspect the actual seating layout, visibility, ingress height and boot capacity rather than assuming every SUV seats seven.
- MPV: compare the number of usable seats, access to the third row and luggage space with all rows occupied.
Write down the number of regular occupants, child-seat requirements, luggage pattern and the roads you drive. A lower-priced variant that cannot meet those needs is not a saving.
Choose the energy source and transmission
Keep petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles in separate comparison groups initially. Their refuelling or charging arrangements, usable space and running-cost assumptions differ. Then specify the transmission you can drive comfortably: manual, automated manual, torque-converter or dual-clutch automatic, continuously variable transmission, or a single-speed electric drive. A model name may cover several of these, with different prices and features.

Step 2: Build a shortlist from exact variants
Use the manufacturer’s current price list or configurator to identify a precise trim, engine or motor and transmission. Record the ex-showroom figure only as a screening value. Official catalogues commonly show multiple fuel types, gearboxes, seating layouts and price points within one model range.
For every candidate, capture:
- Model, variant or trim, powertrain and transmission.
- Number of seats and the equipment that changes with seating configuration.
- Ex-showroom price, announcement date and market or edition covered.
- Safety and driver-assistance equipment on that exact trim.
- Comfort, connectivity and infotainment equipment on that exact trim.
- Expected delivery or stock status in your city.
Do not infer that a feature mentioned in a launch release is standard across the range. It may be limited to a Prestige, top, automatic or otherwise selected trim.
Announced 2026 prices: useful for screening, not for the budget verdict
These figures are manufacturer-announced starting or introductory ex-showroom prices. They are not city-specific on-road totals and should not be treated as proof that the variant fits a ₹20 lakh ceiling.
| Model and status in the cited announcement | Powertrain or variant named | Announced ex-showroom price | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Škoda Kushaq; prices and deliveries announced March 21, 2026 | 1.0 TSI starting version | ₹10.69 lakh | Start a shortlist; obtain the selected trim’s local on-road quote. |
| Stunning New Baleno; September 2026 announcement, bookings open | Starting version | ₹6,09,900 | Check which trim and equipment correspond to the announcement, then price registration and insurance. |
| Nissan Tekton; described as launched | T160 manual, introductory price | ₹10.49 lakh | Confirm that the introductory offer and the manual variant are still available in your city. |
| Nissan Tekton; described as launched | T280 manual and DCT | ₹14.99 lakh | Verify whether the quoted amount applies to both listed transmissions and identify the exact trim before comparing. |
All four figures are dated announcements from the named manufacturers. A dealer’s current quote supersedes an announcement if the two differ.
Step 3: Request an itemised on-road quote
Ask two or more local dealers for a written quote for the same variant, colour and registration location. Send the same request to each dealer so the totals are comparable.

- State the registration address. Give the city, state and, where requested, postal code. Registration or road-tax calculations depend on it.
- Name the exact car. Include model, trim, engine or motor, fuel, transmission and seating configuration.
- Request a line-by-line total. Ask for ex-showroom price, registration or road tax, mandatory fees, insurance premium, taxes and any other compulsory charge to be shown separately.
- Separate optional items. Require accessories, paint protection, fast chargers, extended warranty, service plans and other add-ons to appear in a separate section marked optional.
- Ask for validity. The quote should show its issue date, validity period, stock status and estimated delivery.
- Check arithmetic. Add the mandatory lines yourself and compare that sum with the quoted on-road total.
- Save the document. Keep the PDF, email or dated quotation so a later price change can be identified.
Sources that list cars under ₹20 lakh explain that registration, insurance and applicable taxes vary by city. They do not establish a universal city-level total or a standard percentage to add to every ex-showroom price, so do not use a national rule of thumb in place of a quote.

If a dealer bundles an optional item into the headline total, request a revised quote with it removed. If an item is mandatory under your state’s rules, ask the dealer to identify the rule or fee description rather than silently deleting it.
Compare safety before convenience features
Make a trim-level safety checklist. Record whether each item is standard, optional, unavailable or not stated for the exact variant.
- Number of airbags and whether curtain or side airbags are included.
- Electronic stability control, anti-lock braking and other core braking or stability systems.
- Parking sensors, a reversing camera and camera view quality.
- Tyre-pressure monitoring and child-seat mounting points.
- Driver-assistance functions such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane assistance or adaptive cruise control, where offered.
- Lighting and visibility equipment, including projector or LED lamps and a usable rear wiper where relevant.
Do not treat a marketing phrase such as “advanced safety” as a specification. Check the current brochure or price list for the selected trim and ask the dealer to demonstrate the system. Driver assistance can vary by engine, gearbox or package.
Compare the powertrain and transmission in real use
Fuel and energy fit
Petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric choices have different refuelling or charging requirements. For CNG, check tank placement and the resulting boot space. For an electric vehicle, confirm home-charging installation, connector compatibility and the parking supply available to you. These are suitability checks, not costs that can be assumed from an ex-showroom advertisement.

Performance information to record
- Engine displacement or motor output as stated by the manufacturer.
- Transmission type and the trims in which it is offered.
- Drive layout, if relevant to your roads and weather.
- Official range or efficiency figure, with its testing standard and the understanding that real use varies.
- Warranty coverage and any battery or high-voltage component terms for electrified cars.
Compare like with like. A manual base trim and a fully equipped automatic may share a model name but serve different buyers and carry different on-road totals.

Inspect the cabin rather than counting a feature on a model-level webpage. Check front-seat adjustment, rear-seat legroom, headroom, access, ventilation and the luggage area with the seats in the position you will use.
For comfort and technology, record:
- Climate-control type and rear vents.
- Seat material, adjustment, heating or ventilation.
- Infotainment screen, smartphone integration, navigation and audio hardware.
- Instrument display, connected services and software-update method.
- USB ports, wireless charging and the number and location of power outlets.
- Sunroof, powered tailgate, keyless entry and other convenience features only if they matter to your use.
The September 2026 Baleno announcement describes ADAS and ventilated seats, while the Kushaq release describes a broad entry-variant equipment set and additional Prestige equipment. Those statements identify what the announcements promote; they do not prove that every trim includes the feature. Match each item to the current variant price list before treating it as a deciding advantage.
Make a fair shortlist decision
After collecting quotes, eliminate any candidate whose mandatory on-road total exceeds ₹20 lakh in your city. For the remaining cars, use a weighted score that reflects your needs rather than the longest feature list.

Common errors and how to correct them
Using the ex-showroom number as the final price
Symptom: the advertised figure is below ₹20 lakh but the invoice is higher. Fix: return to the city-specific quote and include registration, insurance and applicable taxes before deciding.
Comparing different variants
Symptom: one car is quoted with an automatic gearbox and another with a manual, or one has seven seats and the other five. Fix: align fuel, transmission, seating and trim, or label the comparison as a deliberate trade-off.
Accepting bundled accessories
Symptom: the dealer says accessories or a protection package are compulsory without showing the basis. Fix: ask for mandatory and optional lines to be separated in writing and buy only what you choose.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Relying on an old launch article
Symptom: the dealer cannot honour the published price or the feature is absent from current stock. Fix: date every figure, check the latest manufacturer price list and request a fresh quote.
Assuming “upcoming” means unavailable
Symptom: you delay a purchase even though bookings or deliveries have begun. Fix: use the current status label and ask about allocation, waiting time and cancellation terms.
Keep purchase price separate from ownership cost
The on-road quote answers whether you can buy the car within ₹20 lakh. It does not establish fuel or charging expense, maintenance, insurance renewals, financing interest or resale value. If those factors matter, create a second worksheet and source assumptions for your annual kilometres, energy prices, service schedule, loan terms and ownership period. Do not present that separate estimate as part of the dealer’s purchase total.
A practical final checklist
- City and registration state are written on every quote.
- Model status is labelled announced, bookings open, launched or deliveries started.
- Variant, fuel, transmission and seating match across candidates.
- Prices show the announcement or quote date.
- Registration or road tax, insurance and mandatory fees are itemised.
- Optional accessories and packages are outside the mandatory total.
- Final on-road total is at or below ₹20,00,000.
- Safety, driver assistance, powertrain, seating, comfort and infotainment are checked for the exact trim.
- Quote validity, stock and expected delivery are recorded.
Bottom line
The best way to compare cars under ₹20 lakh in India is to compare purchasable variants, not headline model names. Use announced ex-showroom prices to build a shortlist, then let a dated, itemised quote for your city determine whether the exact car fits the on-road ceiling. Once it does, choose on safety and suitability first, followed by powertrain, seating and the features you will actually use.
