How to Compare Toyota and Subaru Safety Features Before Buying

Toyota and Subaru cannot be ranked safely by brand alone. Match model year, body class and trim, compare TSS or EyeSight feature by feature, verify the window sticker, and check exact IIHS and NHTSA results.

Neither Toyota nor Subaru is universally safer. The defensible answer depends on the same model year, body class, trim, safety-system generation, crash-test configuration and equipment list. Compare a Toyota Safety Sense vehicle with the specific Subaru EyeSight vehicle you can actually buy, then verify independent ratings for that exact configuration.

Separate two questions throughout your comparison: how well the vehicle protects occupants in a crash, and how well its driver-assistance technology can help prevent or reduce a crash. A highly rated system is support for an attentive driver, not autonomous driving.

Start with an apples-to-apples comparison

A Toyota compact crossover and a Subaru midsize SUV cannot be ranked fairly by brand name. Size, weight, seating position, body structure, tire choice, headlights, build date and optional packages can all change the result. Even vehicles wearing the same model badge can have different sensors, software and test outcomes across model years.

  • Model year: Use the same year whenever possible. A 2025 vehicle may have a different camera, radar, software revision or standard-equipment list than its 2024 predecessor.
  • Body class and size: Compare small SUVs with small SUVs, sedans with sedans and similarly sized vehicles. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) notes that larger, heavier vehicles generally provide more protection than smaller, lighter ones.
  • Trim and build date: A base trim and a top trim may differ in blind-spot monitoring, headlights, rear braking or driver monitoring. Build-date notes can limit the application of a rating.
  • Equipment source: Use the manufacturer build sheet or window sticker, not a dealer summary or a generic brochure.

Write down the exact candidates, such as “2025 model, all-wheel-drive, mid-level trim,” before comparing systems. If the candidates are from different years, label every test result and equipment difference with its year.

Toyota Safety Sense: identify the generation first

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is a family of active-safety systems, not one identical package across the entire range. Toyota’s March 2025 applicability guide lists these generations and models:

TSS generation Models listed in Toyota’s March 2025 guide
TSS 3.0 2025 Crown, Prius, Camry, Corolla Cross, bZ4X, Tacoma, Corolla, Mirai, Grand Highlander, Crown Signia, Land Cruiser and 4Runner
TSS 2.5+ Highlander and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid
TSS 2.5 Tundra, Sequoia and RAV4
TSS 2.0 Sienna

This table establishes Toyota’s listed applicability, not a promise that every feature or calibration is identical within a generation. Confirm the equipment on the candidate vehicle. A 2025 RAV4, for example, is listed with TSS 2.5, while a 2025 Corolla is listed with TSS 3.0; do not infer superiority from the version number alone without checking the functions, operating limits and independent tests.

What to record on the Toyota build sheet

  • The TSS generation shown for that model and year.
  • Whether automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control and lane assistance are standard on the chosen trim.
  • Whether blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, driver monitoring or intersection assistance is standard, optional or unavailable.
  • Headlight type and any trim or package restriction attached to the IIHS result.

Do not assume that a feature mentioned in a national marketing page is installed on every regional specification or trim. The window sticker is the final check for the vehicle in front of you.

Subaru EyeSight: a system name, not a single specification

Subaru markets EyeSight as its driver-assistance system. Subaru’s official description says, “EyeSight monitors the road while you drive to better ensure the safety of everyone in the vehicle.” Its feature information describes functions including pre-collision support and lane-change assistance.

That description does not establish one universal EyeSight equipment list. Generation, model, trim and market determine what is fitted and how it operates. For each Subaru candidate, obtain the build sheet and owner’s manual and record the exact answers for the same checklist used on the Toyota:

  • Forward automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection.
  • Adaptive cruise-control behavior, including whether it can stop and resume in traffic and the stated speed range.
  • Lane-departure warning, lane-centering or steering assistance, and the conditions in which assistance disengages.
  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
  • Intersection or turn assistance, if listed for that vehicle.
  • Driver monitoring, rear automatic braking and headlight equipment.

When a Subaru page says a function is available, verify whether “available” means standard, a paid package, a higher trim or a particular model year. Record “not stated” rather than treating an unlisted feature as included.

Compare active safety feature by feature

Use one row per function and one column per exact vehicle. This prevents a brand-level impression from hiding a meaningful omission.

Function Questions to answer for both vehicles Why it matters
Automatic emergency braking Does it operate day and night? What objects can it detect? At what speeds? Is forward collision warning separate from braking? Detection range, speed limits and false-alert behavior affect real-world usefulness.
Pedestrian detection Is pedestrian recognition included, and under what light, speed and roadway conditions? A system designed for vehicles only may not address a low-speed pedestrian conflict.
Adaptive cruise control Does it maintain a gap, stop in traffic and resume? What driver-attention checks and speed limits apply? Stop-and-go behavior and restart rules differ between systems.
Lane warning and steering support Is there warning only, lane-centering assistance or both? How does it respond to faded lines, curves and construction zones? Steering support is not self-driving and may disengage without a clear handoff.
Blind-spot monitoring Is it installed on the trim, and does it include lane-change assistance or only a mirror warning? Side detection can be valuable on multilane roads but does not replace a shoulder check.
Rear cross-traffic alert Does it warn for vehicles approaching from either side while reversing? Is rear automatic braking included? Useful visibility support in parking lots, driveways and alleys.
Intersection or turn assistance Is the function present, and what traffic, turn-signal and speed conditions activate it? Intersection scenarios are complex; the manual’s limits matter as much as the label.
Driver monitoring Does the vehicle monitor gaze or hands, and what happens after repeated alerts? Monitoring can help with attention but can also be limited by sunglasses, lighting or seating position.
Headlights Which headlight hardware is fitted, and which exact configuration did IIHS test? Night visibility is part of crash avoidance, and ratings can vary by lamp type.

For every “yes,” add the operating conditions from the owner’s manual: rain, snow, glare, dirty or blocked cameras, radar obstruction, lane-marking quality, steep grades and towing. A feature that works only when markings are clear should not be treated as equivalent to one with a different operating envelope.

Separate crash avoidance from crashworthiness

IIHS evaluates two different dimensions: crashworthiness, which concerns occupant protection in a crash, and crash avoidance and mitigation, which concerns technology that can prevent or reduce a crash. Read both parts of a vehicle’s result. A strong prevention score does not erase a weakness in occupant protection, and a strong structure does not make a driver-assistance system autonomous.

What the 2025 IIHS awards show

IIHS’s 2025 award results include Toyota Prius, Camry, bZ4X, Corolla Cross and Tundra. The 2025 small-SUV results include Subaru Forester and Solterra. These are category- and configuration-specific awards; an award for one Toyota or Subaru model does not transfer to another model, trim or body style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the precise IIHS page for the vehicle you are considering, including trim limitations, headlight results and build-date notes. Compare vehicles within the same class before drawing a conclusion. IIHS specifically cautions that larger, heavier vehicles generally provide more protection than smaller, lighter vehicles, so a small SUV’s award should not be interpreted as equal occupant protection to that of a substantially heavier vehicle.

How to use NHTSA results

NHTSA’s model-year 2025 testing announcement lists Subaru Forester and Toyota 4Runner, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Land Cruiser Hybrid, Tacoma and Tundra for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing. Subaru Forester Hybrid is listed for advanced crash-avoidance verification testing.

Being selected for testing is not a rating. Retrieve the final NHTSA result for the exact model year, drivetrain and body style. If a final result is not posted, say so and avoid converting the testing list into a safety score.

Interpreting Subaru’s reported awards

Subaru Corporation’s Integrated Report 2025 states that, as of May 2025, one 2025-model Subaru had won IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and two had won Top Safety Pick. The same report says three Subaru models had 2024 ANCAP five-star ratings as of July 2025. Those counts are corporate-reported snapshots, not a substitute for checking the individual IIHS or ANCAP result and its tested configuration.

Use a four-axis decision framework

1. Prevention coverage and tested performance

Count the functions you actually need, then inspect independent tests. A buyer who spends most of the week on a highway may place greater weight on lane-centering behavior and adaptive-cruise handoffs. Someone who walks or cycles in dense neighborhoods may prioritize low-speed pedestrian detection. Neither preference creates a universal winner.

2. Crashworthiness and vehicle size

Review the structure, restraint and crash-test results for the exact vehicle. Consider size and mass honestly: a smaller vehicle can earn a high award while still offering less physical protection than a larger vehicle in some crashes.

3. Standard equipment and the cost to obtain it

List the desired features and mark each one standard, optional or unavailable. Compare the price of the complete trim or package needed to obtain them, not the starting price of the model. A lower-priced vehicle that requires an expensive package may not be the better value for your safety priorities.

4. Usability in your driving conditions

Snow, heavy rain, glare, unpaved roads, narrow lanes, frequent reversing and long commutes expose different limitations. Read how each system handles blocked cameras, poor lane markings and driver inattention. Then test the warnings and steering support in a supervised drive.

A step-by-step buying process

  1. Define the candidates. Write the model year, body style, drivetrain and trim for one Toyota and one Subaru.
  2. Pull both build sheets. Use the manufacturer’s document or the vehicle window sticker. Save the document with the vehicle identification information.
  3. Identify the system generation. For Toyota, record the TSS generation from the applicable guide and vehicle documentation. For Subaru, record the EyeSight generation or equipment description stated for that model and trim.
  4. Complete the feature matrix. Mark automatic braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise, lane support, blind-spot functions, rear cross-traffic alert, intersection assistance, driver monitoring, rear automatic braking and headlights.
  5. Check independent results. Open the IIHS result for the exact body style and configuration, including trim and build-date notes. Then retrieve the final NHTSA 5-Star result for the same model year.
  6. Price the desired equipment. Add the trim or package required for every feature you marked as important. Do not count a feature that appears only on a different trim.
  7. Read the limitations. Note warnings for rain, snow, glare, blocked sensors, poor lane markings, curves, towing and driver-attention requirements.
  8. Take a supervised test drive. Ask the salesperson to demonstrate warning timing, steering support, adaptive-cruise following, lane changes and reversing alerts in safe, legal conditions. Keep your hands on the wheel and remain responsible for braking and steering.
  9. Recheck immediately before purchase. Ratings, trim content and model-year pages can change. Confirm the final vehicle identification number, sticker and current independent results.

What to test on the drive

Forward and pedestrian warnings

Ask which alerts are visual, audible or haptic, and whether the system can apply braking. Do not create a hazard to trigger a test. Use the demonstration procedure in the owner’s manual or rely on a controlled dealer demonstration.

Lane support

Observe whether the system merely warns, nudges the vehicle or actively centers it. Note how quickly it asks you to take over when markings fade or a curve tightens. Keep both hands available and treat every alert as a request for immediate driver action.

Adaptive cruise

Confirm the minimum and maximum operating speeds, following-gap controls, stop-and-go behavior and restart requirements. Check whether the vehicle cancels when a driver changes lanes, touches the brake or encounters a stationary object.

Blind-spot and rear alerts

Check the mirror indicators from the driver’s normal seating position and ask whether rear cross-traffic alert includes braking. These systems supplement, rather than replace, mirrors, shoulder checks and a slow reverse.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing generations by number alone: TSS 3.0 is not a complete substitute for reading the functions and limits on a TSS 2.5 or 2.5+ vehicle.
  • Transferring an award: A Toyota award does not cover every Toyota, and a Forester or Solterra result does not cover every Subaru.
  • Confusing testing selection with a rating: NHTSA’s list of vehicles selected for testing is not a five-star result.
  • Counting optional equipment as standard: Verify the exact sticker and package; dealer websites often combine trims.
  • Ignoring headlights: Headlight hardware and IIHS configuration notes can change the night-driving assessment.
  • Treating assistance as autonomy: Cameras and radar can be blocked, lane markings can disappear and drivers must remain engaged.
  • Mixing years without labeling them: Put the model year beside every rating and feature claim.

How to make the final choice

Choose the vehicle that gives you the strongest combination of tested occupant protection, useful prevention functions, standard equipment and predictable behavior in your own conditions. If one candidate has a better award but lacks a feature you regularly need, the other may be the more sensible purchase. If both meet your requirements, prefer the trim whose important equipment is standard and whose limitations you understand.

Before signing, inspect the actual vehicle’s sticker, confirm its model year and build date, match the VIN to the paperwork and repeat the independent-rating check. That process produces a defensible Toyota-versus-Subaru decision; a brand-wide safety ranking does not.
