There is no universally cheapest V8 sedan to own. A fair comparison uses the same ownership period, annual mileage, and accounting rules for every candidate, then adds purchase and financing costs, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs, and subtracts the vehicle’s expected resale value. The result is an estimate for your circumstances—not a permanent ranking of V8 sedans.
Use this calculation:
Total ownership cost = purchase and financing costs + taxes and fees + fuel + insurance + maintenance + repairs − resale value.

1. Define the comparison before collecting prices
A V8 badge is not a cost specification. Two sedans with eight-cylinder engines can differ in age, drivetrain, transmission, fuel requirement, equipment, warranty coverage, insurance risk and resale demand. Record the configuration precisely for each candidate.

Vehicle identity checklist
- Model year
- Make and model
- Exact trim and body style
- Engine displacement and output, if relevant to the listing
- Transmission and drivetrain
- New or used status
- Current odometer reading for a used car
- Condition, accident history and service records
Fuel-economy figures and specifications can vary by style or trim. Edmunds says most specifications and MSRP data come from manufacturers and that its estimated MPG is based on EPA information; it specifically warns that trim or style differences can explain discrepancies. Verify that every MPG figure belongs to the exact vehicle you are pricing. See Edmunds’ explanation of its information sources.
Keep unlike vehicles visible
If one candidate is a new sedan and another is an older used sedan, do not hide that difference inside a single spreadsheet total. Label the comparison as a new-versus-used decision, state the age and condition gap, and explain which assumptions cannot be identical. A five-year new-car depreciation assumption is not automatically suitable for a 10-year-old used vehicle.
2. Choose one ownership horizon and one mileage plan
Pick the period that matches your decision: for example, the number of years you expect to keep the car. Apply that same period to every candidate. Also set expected annual miles and the city/highway mix for each driver. If your use will differ by vehicle, state why rather than quietly changing the input.

A low-mileage owner can reach a different result from a commuter even when both drive the same sedan.
Write the assumptions at the top of the worksheet
- Ownership years
- Expected miles per year and total miles
- City/highway split
- Fuel price and fuel grade
- Purchase date and jurisdiction
- Down payment, APR and loan term—or the cash-purchase opportunity-cost rate
- Insurance coverage and deductible
- Expected condition and resale channel at the end
Changing the horizon changes which costs dominate. A short holding period exposes purchase-price differences and early depreciation; a long period gives fuel, maintenance, repairs and accumulated interest more influence.
3. Build a cost model that does not double-count
Use one row for every material cost. The following structure keeps categories separate and makes omissions easier to find.
| Category | What to enter | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Actual transaction price for the specified vehicle | Use the negotiated price or realistic market price, not an unrelated advertised MSRP. |
| Financing | APR, amount financed, down payment and term | Report total interest or another clearly defined financing cost. |
| Taxes and fees | Purchase tax, registration, title and recurring local charges | Use the buyer’s jurisdiction and purchase price. |
| Fuel | Annual miles, precise EPA MPG, fuel grade and local price | Calculate annual spending, then multiply by the horizon or model changing prices explicitly. |
| Insurance | Quote for the actual driver, address, vehicle and coverage | Use the quoted premium and identify the deductible and policy limits. |
| Scheduled maintenance | Service intervals and expected prices | Keep routine services separate from failures and collision work. |
| Repairs | Reserve for unscheduled mechanical or electrical work | Use model-specific evidence and inspection findings; identify uncertainty. |
| Resale value | Expected value at the end of the period and mileage | Subtract it once from the ownership total. |
Do not add a calculator’s depreciation figure to a separately calculated purchase-to-resale loss. Likewise, do not add loan payments as a second cost after already counting the interest and treating the principal as the purchase price. Decide whether your model measures economic cost, cash outlay, or both, and label it.

4. Calculate acquisition, financing, taxes and fees
Purchase and financing
For a financed purchase, record the amount borrowed, APR, term and down payment. The principal pays for the car; the interest is the financing cost. Report the total interest over the loan term, and specify whether the loan ends before your ownership period. If you sell while a balance remains, include the payoff effect in the sale calculation rather than treating the vehicle as fully owned.
For a cash purchase, the direct financing charge is zero, but an economic-cost comparison may assign an opportunity cost to the money used. Edmunds’ methodology includes financing even when a buyer pays cash, treating it as an opportunity-cost measure in that context. Do not mix that convention with actual loan interest without labeling the difference.
Taxes and registration
Estimate sales or use tax from the transaction price and local rules. Add title, registration, documentation and inspection charges that apply to the buyer. Include recurring registration or local vehicle fees during the selected period. A calculator’s generic fee assumption can be useful for a rough comparison, but a personal result should use your jurisdiction.
5. Estimate fuel cost from the exact configuration
Fuel is important in a V8 sedan comparison, but MPG alone is not the answer. Use the required or recommended fuel grade, your route mix and a local price.
Fuel calculation
- Find the EPA city, highway and combined ratings for the exact trim, engine, transmission and drivetrain.
- Estimate gallons per year: annual miles ÷ expected real-world MPG.
- Multiply gallons by the local price for the fuel grade the owner will actually buy.
- Multiply annual fuel spending by the ownership period, or model a stated price change if you expect one.
The EPA’s gasoline-vehicle label provides a combined city/highway estimate for comparison and an estimate of five-year fueling cost relative to an average new vehicle, using the assumptions printed on the label. Read the label and its assumptions at the EPA interactive gasoline vehicle label.
Edmunds gives one example of an explicit fuel method: revised EPA ratings, a 45% highway/55% city mix, a standard transmission and a one-year moving average of self-service fuel prices in the state. That is a model for transparent assumptions, not a universal V8 fuel bill. Its published methodology is described at Edmunds’ True Cost to Own documentation.
Do not assume the label is your consumption
Traffic, weather, tire pressure, driving style, idling, short trips and accessory use can move real consumption away from the rating. Apply the same method to every candidate, then run a sensitivity check with a lower MPG assumption if your driving is demanding.

6. Price insurance for the actual driver
Insurance is a vehicle-and-person cost, not a reliable generic average. Obtain quotes using the driver’s age, driving record, address, annual mileage, garaging situation, vehicle identification, coverage limits and deductible. Keep the quoted coverage identical across candidates when the purpose is to compare vehicles.

If the insurer offers a different deductible or limits for one vehicle, either match the coverage or show the trade-off in a separate scenario. A quote based on a different driver profile should be labeled as a placeholder, not presented as your expected premium.
Edmunds’ estimate uses a defined driver profile and liability, comprehensive and collision coverage. Edmunds also cautions that its overall TCO is comparative rather than predictive; actual costs vary with circumstances such as driving history and annual mileage. Read the calculator at Edmunds’ five-year cost calculator.
7. Separate scheduled maintenance from repairs
Scheduled maintenance
List the services required by the manufacturer for the selected model year and mileage: oil and filter changes, inspections, fluid services, spark plugs where specified, belts, brakes, tires and other interval items. Use prices from a service provider in your area or a reliable model-specific estimate. Include wear items only once; for example, do not place a brake job in both scheduled maintenance and repairs.
Unscheduled repairs
Repairs are uncertain, especially on a used V8 sedan. Build a reserve using the exact model year’s known service exposure, maintenance records, warranty coverage and an independent inspection. A pre-purchase inspection can reveal tires, leaks, cooling-system issues, suspension wear or warning lights that change the reserve immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShow the repair reserve as an estimate or range when evidence is weak. Do not turn an uncertain reserve into a false-precision dollar figure. Edmunds reports maintenance and repairs as separate categories, a useful distinction for your worksheet.
8. Estimate depreciation and resale value
Depreciation is the purchase-to-resale value decline during your chosen period and mileage. Estimate what the exact car could sell for at the end, not what a different trim commands today. Consider age, mileage, condition, accident history, equipment, title status, regional demand and whether you would sell privately or trade it.

Edmunds’ methodology assumes clean condition, 15,000 miles per year and private-party resale. Those are calculator assumptions, not a guarantee for a high-mileage, damaged or unusually equipped sedan. If your expected miles or selling method differs, adjust the resale estimate and state the basis.
Use a conservative, central and optimistic resale case when the result is sensitive to residual value. Subtract only the selected end value from the total; do not also count depreciation from a calculator that already includes it.
9. Use a TCO calculator without accepting hidden assumptions
A calculator can speed up arithmetic, but it cannot personalize every input. Edmunds’ five-year methodology includes depreciation, financing interest, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, repairs and applicable federal tax credits. Its example assumptions include 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, above-average credit, 10% down and a 60-month term. Treat those settings as the calculator’s scenario, not as a recommendation for every buyer.
Before importing a calculator total, check:
- Whether depreciation is already included.
- Whether purchase price is MSRP, transaction price or another estimate.
- Whether financing is based on your APR and term.
- How taxes, registration and recurring fees are handled.
- Which insurance profile and coverage limits are used.
- What fuel price, fuel grade, MPG and mileage assumptions drive the fuel line.
- Whether maintenance and repairs are separated.
- Whether resale is already subtracted and what condition, mileage and sale channel are assumed.
- Whether any tax credit applies to the particular vehicle and buyer.
Edmunds describes its TCO as “a comparative tool, not a predictive tool”; the wording appears on its calculator page. Use the output to compare consistently configured vehicles, then replace generic inputs with your own quotes where practical.

11. Run sensitivity checks before choosing a winner
A close result should not be presented as decisive. Recalculate the totals after changing one major input at a time.
Annual mileage
Test a lower and higher annual-mile case. Fuel, tires, service intervals, resale mileage and sometimes insurance will move. The sedan that costs less for a 5,000-mile owner may not cost less for a 25,000-mile commuter.

Fuel price and consumption
Raise and lower the local price for the required grade, and test a realistic MPG reduction for heavy traffic or winter use. This reveals whether a small MPG advantage matters more than a large depreciation or insurance difference.
Resale value
Replace the central resale estimate with conservative and optimistic values. If the ranking changes, report that the outcome depends heavily on residual value rather than declaring one car cheaper in all cases.
Repair exposure
For a used sedan, run a low-repair case and a major-repair case based on inspection findings and known model-specific risks. Keep the scenarios plausible and explain the evidence; do not invent a failure rate.

12. Avoid the mistakes that distort V8 comparisons
- Comparing badges instead of configurations: a trim, transmission or drivetrain change can alter MPG, price and insurance.
- Using different ownership periods: a three-year total cannot be ranked directly against a seven-year total.
- Counting fuel as the whole answer: depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes, maintenance and repairs can be larger cost lines.
- Using a national insurance average as a personal quote: location and driver history can dominate the premium.
- Applying new-car assumptions to an older used car: age, condition, remaining warranty and repair exposure require separate treatment.
- Double-counting depreciation or principal: identify exactly what each calculator and spreadsheet line contains.
- Mixing fuel grades: compare the price of the fuel each vehicle actually requires or recommends.
- Ignoring sale mileage and condition: resale depends on how the car will look and how far it will have traveled when you sell.
- Reporting a precise total from uncertain inputs: show ranges or scenarios when repairs, resale or insurance are not known.
- Changing assumptions to favor a preferred car: keep common inputs common and explain every unavoidable difference.
13. Report the result as a decision, not a universal ranking
Present the category breakdown first, followed by total cost, cost per year and cost per mile. State the ownership horizon, mileage, fuel assumptions, financing convention, insurance basis, repair reserve and resale method beside the figures. If one candidate leads only under one mileage or resale scenario, say so.
A useful conclusion identifies the cost driver for the particular buyer: perhaps depreciation dominates a short ownership period, fuel dominates a high-mileage route, or insurance and repair uncertainty overwhelm a modest MPG difference. The method is transferable; the dollar result belongs to the stated driver, location, vehicle condition and dates.
For broader context on EPA fuel-economy reporting, the agency maintains its Automotive Trends report page. It does not replace vehicle-specific ratings or a personal ownership worksheet.
