Compare the two cars over the same ownership period and mileage, then add every cash cost: negotiated purchase price, taxes and fees, financing interest, insurance, fuel, maintenance, repairs, and the value you expect to recover when you sell. A lower sticker price or lower monthly payment does not establish a lower total cost. The result depends on the exact vehicles, their condition, your location, loan offer, insurance quote, driving, and resale assumptions.
What “total cost” includes
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) defines a vehicle’s true cost as the upfront cost of the car and features plus recurring expenses such as interest, insurance, and routine maintenance. Its consumer guidance also identifies taxes, title costs, and fees as upfront costs. Depreciation is the portion of the purchase price you do not recover. You can show it explicitly as purchase price minus ending value, or show the ending value as a deduction from total outlays. Do one or the other, not both.
Set identical assumptions before collecting prices
A comparison is only meaningful when both cars are measured on the same basis. Write the assumptions at the top of your worksheet and change them only when you deliberately run a scenario.
Choose the ownership period and mileage
Five years is a practical reference period because it captures several years of depreciation and operating costs without requiring a speculative long-range forecast. Use your own planned holding period if you expect to sell sooner or keep the car longer. Enter expected annual mileage and total miles for the period; fuel, maintenance intervals, tire wear, and resale value all depend on use.

That is a standardizing assumption, not a prediction of your driving. A 7,000-mile commuter and a 25,000-mile driver should not use the same fuel and wear estimates.
Hold the financing scenario constant
Decide whether each vehicle is being compared as a cash purchase, a financed purchase, or a lease. If you finance, use the same down-payment percentage, term, and type of loan unless the actual offers make a different comparison unavoidable. Edmunds’ reference calculation assumes a 10% down payment, a 60-month traditional loan, and an interest rate intended for a buyer with above-average credit.
Those assumptions are useful for a neutral baseline, but your actual annual percentage rate (APR), amount financed, term, and credit tier control your interest. Record the loan offer for each candidate and calculate total interest over the comparison period. Do not infer affordability from the monthly payment alone: extending a term can lower the payment while increasing total interest and keeping you in debt longer.
Use the buyer’s location and profile
Taxes, registration, title charges, dealer or documentation fees, insurance premiums, fuel prices, and loan rates vary by location and personal circumstances. Use the same ZIP code, coverage limits, driver history, and deductible assumptions when requesting insurance quotes for both cars. If an input is not yet quoted, label it as an estimate rather than presenting it as a fact.

Build a side-by-side cost worksheet
Create one column for the new car, one for the used luxury car, and a third column describing the source or assumption. Keep quoted amounts separate from forecasts so you can see which parts of the result still need verification.
| Cost category | New car | Used luxury car | Evidence or assumption to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Negotiated vehicle price | Exact written offer | Exact written offer | Use the transaction price you can actually obtain, not the advertised sticker price. |
| Destination, delivery, or other mandatory charges | Quote | Quote | Include charges required to complete the purchase; identify optional products separately. |
| Sales or use tax | Location-specific amount | Location-specific amount | Apply the same jurisdictional rules to each vehicle. |
| Title, registration, and documentation fees | Location-specific amount | Location-specific amount | Confirm which fees recur annually and which are paid once. |
| Down payment | Your chosen amount | Your chosen amount | Keep the percentage or dollar amount consistent unless cash constraints require a separate scenario. |

| Fuel | Annual miles × vehicle-specific fuel use × local fuel price | Annual miles × vehicle-specific fuel use × local fuel price | Use the powertrain and fuel type of each candidate and state the price date. |
| Scheduled maintenance | Manufacturer schedule and local labor/parts estimates | Manufacturer schedule plus records of completed work | Keep routine service separate from unexpected repairs. |
| Repairs | Estimate outside scheduled service | Estimate from age, mileage, inspection, records, and known condition | No universal used-luxury repair premium is established; the individual car matters. |

| Total estimated cost | Sum of outlays minus ending value | Sum of outlays minus ending value | Show assumptions beside the totals and mark estimates as estimates. |
Step-by-step comparison
1. Define the two candidates precisely
Record model year, trim, engine or motor, drivetrain, options, current mileage, and vehicle identification number when available. “A new sedan” and “a used luxury SUV” are not comparable inputs: equipment, fuel consumption, tire size, warranty status, and market value can differ substantially within the same model line.
For the used luxury car, record seller type and ownership history as well as mileage. A documented one-owner example and a car with missing records should not receive identical maintenance or repair assumptions.
2. Replace list prices with transaction prices
Obtain a written, itemized purchase offer for each car. Start with the negotiated vehicle price, then add destination or delivery charges, sales or use tax, title, registration, and documentation fees. List optional accessories, protection products, and service contracts separately so they do not disappear inside a monthly payment.
The CFPB cautions that affordability cannot be calculated from a listed price alone. Your worksheet should therefore show the complete amount due at signing and the amount financed after the down payment.
3. Calculate financing interest independently
For each loan, capture principal, APR, term, payment frequency, and any finance charges. Use the lender’s amortization schedule or a calculator to total interest through the end of your comparison period. If the loan lasts longer than your planned ownership, include the balance remaining when you sell; otherwise the comparison can overstate the cash you have recovered from the sale.
Keep financing as its own row. A car with a higher price can sometimes receive a lower rate, while a used vehicle may have a different rate or term; only the actual offers reveal the effect.

4. Get insurance quotes for both exact cars
Request quotes using the same driver, address, liability limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, annual mileage, and policy term. Luxury-car parts, repair practices, theft rates, and replacement values can affect premiums, but a general average is only a placeholder. Enter the quoted premium for each VIN or exact configuration and identify whether the amount is monthly, six-month, or annual.

Use this transparent calculation for each vehicle:
annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ expected miles per unit of fuel × local fuel price
Use the powertrain’s applicable fuel type and a realistic efficiency figure, then multiply by the number of years. If your mileage or fuel price is uncertain, run low, middle, and high cases rather than hiding the uncertainty in one number. Edmunds includes fuel as a separate TCO category.
6. Separate scheduled maintenance from repairs
Scheduled maintenance includes services specified by the manufacturer, such as fluid changes, inspections, and interval replacements. Repairs are corrective work caused by failure, wear, damage, or an inspection finding. Keeping them separate prevents a low routine-service estimate from masking a large repair exposure.
For the new car, use the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and local service prices. For the used luxury car, collect service invoices, identify overdue intervals, and ask an independent mechanic to inspect the vehicle before purchase. Use the inspection findings and documented condition to adjust the repair estimate. Edmunds lists maintenance and repairs as distinct categories but does not establish one repair allowance that applies to every used luxury car.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute7. Estimate the ending value without double-counting depreciation
Choose a consistent method for estimating what each car could be worth at the end of the period. State the assumed future mileage, condition, location, and valuation date. A simple ownership-cost presentation is:
cash outlays = price + taxes and fees + interest + insurance + fuel + maintenance + repairsnet ownership cost = cash outlays − estimated sale or trade-in value

Alternatively, calculate depreciation as purchase price minus ending value and add it to operating costs. Do not subtract the ending value and also add depreciation for the same vehicle.
8. Add the rows and document confidence
Total each vehicle’s costs for the identical period and mileage. Mark every cell as a quote, an invoice-backed amount, a calculated estimate, or an uncertain forecast. A total built mostly from quotes is more decision-ready than one built from generic averages, even when both totals have the same arithmetic precision.

Age and mileage
Age and mileage affect how soon interval services, wear items, and age-related failures may occur. Compare the candidate’s current odometer reading with the service schedule and your expected ending mileage. Edmunds’ public description uses 15,000 miles of use for each model year through the current calendar year when presenting used-vehicle TCO; your car may have been driven much more or less.
Documented service history
Ask for dated invoices, not just a seller’s verbal summary. Look for evidence that scheduled services were completed, note repeated repairs, and identify gaps. A missing record is not proof that work was skipped, but it is a reason to use a wider repair range or obtain more verification.
Independent inspection findings
Have a qualified, independent technician inspect the exact vehicle before purchase. Request written estimates for immediate work, deferred maintenance, tires, brakes, leaks, electronic faults, and other findings. Put those amounts in the repair or maintenance rows and keep them distinct from hypothetical future failures.
Warranty and coverage status
Record any remaining factory, certified, or third-party coverage, its expiration by time and mileage, exclusions, deductible, and transfer rules. Treat covered repairs differently from costs you would pay yourself, and model a scenario in which coverage expires during your ownership. Do not assume that a warranty transfers or covers every diagnosis and wear item without reading its terms.
The available TCO methodology establishes that maintenance and repairs belong in the comparison; it does not provide a model-specific warranty promise or a universal used-luxury surcharge.

Use sensitivity analysis instead of false precision
A single total can conceal how fragile the decision is. Recalculate each car under alternative assumptions that are plausible for your situation:
- Mileage: lower and higher annual miles to show the effect on fuel, service, tires, and resale.
- APR and term: the best and worst loan offers you could realistically receive.
- Insurance: the actual quotes, including any difference in deductibles or coverage.
- Repairs: a documented baseline, a higher-cost case for deferred work, and a lower-cost case if inspection finds no immediate issues.
- Fuel price: a range around the current local price rather than a permanent fixed number.
- Ending value: conservative and optimistic resale assumptions with the same future mileage and condition definitions.
Then identify the inputs that can change which car is cheaper. If a small APR change reverses the result, financing terms deserve negotiation before you decide. If the result changes only under an extreme repair scenario, obtain a better inspection estimate instead of treating the extreme case as certain.
Why monthly payment and sticker price can mislead
A monthly payment combines price, down payment, APR, term, taxes, fees, and optional products. Two payments can look similar while one loan lasts longer or carries more interest. Conversely, a used luxury car can have a lower purchase price but higher insurance, maintenance, repairs, or depreciation from an already high-end specification.
Use the payment to test cash-flow affordability, not to measure total cost. First verify that the complete upfront amount and recurring budget fit your finances; then compare total interest and all ownership categories over the same period.
Use calculators as organizers, not forecasts
Edmunds’ Price: True Cost to Own documentation lists depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repairs as TCO components. Its What is True Cost to Own (TCO)? explanation says the tool is comparative rather than predictive. The calculator’s five-year, 15,000-mile, 10%-down, 60-month framework can establish a common starting point, but it cannot know your quotes, driving record, credit offer, service history, or inspection results.
For additional category explanations, see Edmunds’ How to Use Edmunds True Cost to Own, dated September 14, 2018. Replace generic inputs with current, vehicle-specific information before relying on the result.
Common comparison errors and their fixes
- Comparing different periods: Use the same ownership years and annual miles for both cars.
- Using sticker price: Replace it with an itemized transaction price plus taxes, title, registration, and required fees.
- Choosing by payment: Compare total interest and the loan balance at sale, not just the monthly figure.
- Using one insurance average: Obtain matched quotes for each exact vehicle and driver profile.
- Combining maintenance and repairs: Keep scheduled work, inspection findings, and unexpected failures in separate rows.
- Assuming every used luxury car has the same risk: Adjust for age, mileage, records, inspection results, and remaining coverage.
- Counting depreciation twice: Either subtract ending value from outlays or add purchase price minus ending value as depreciation.
- Leaving estimates unlabeled: Identify who supplied each number, the date, and the conditions under which it applies.
- Failing to refresh volatile inputs: Update rates, insurance, fuel prices, taxes, transaction prices, and repair quotes for the actual purchase decision.
A decision rule you can defend
Choose the new car when its additional upfront and financing outlay is justified by the combination of predictable operating costs, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and expected resale value under your assumptions. Choose the used luxury car when its verified transaction price and expected ownership costs produce a lower net cost without creating a repair or cash-flow risk you cannot absorb.
