The cheaper SUV is the one with the lower total cost over your planned ownership period—not necessarily the one with the lower sticker price, monthly payment, or fuel bill. Compare a gas and a conventional (non-plug-in) hybrid SUV that are closely matched in size, model year, trim, drivetrain, and equipment. Then use the same annual mileage, ownership period, financing assumptions, local fuel price, insurance quotes, taxes, maintenance estimates, and resale assumptions for both.
This method produces a buyer-specific result. Without a vehicle pair, location, mileage, loan terms, and ownership horizon, there is no honest universal winner or defensible break-even mileage.

What “total cost” includes
Fuel and the monthly payment are only two lines in an ownership budget. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes regular costs such as fuel, parking, registration, fees, taxes, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. It also treats depreciation as a loss that accumulates over the vehicle’s life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“There are the obvious costs like your monthly car payment, gas, and parking at your origin and/or destination. Add to that the somewhat less obvious ‘pay and forget’ costs that come up regularly or semi-regularly, like registration, fees, taxes, and insurance, as well as maintenance and repairs.” — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, True Cost of Car Ownership

Your comparison should therefore use this structure:
- Purchase price and any hybrid premium
- Fuel
- Loan interest and other financing expense
- Insurance
- Sales or use taxes, registration, licensing, and recurring fees
- Scheduled maintenance, tires, and reasonable repair allowances
- Depreciation, expressed either as a cost or through expected resale value
Keep the purchase price separate from financing expense. A loan payment contains principal and interest; counting the full stream of payments and then adding the purchase price again would double-count the principal.
Choose genuinely comparable SUVs
A fair comparison starts before you enter a number in a spreadsheet. Select one gas SUV and one conventional hybrid SUV that serve the same purpose and are as close as possible in the attributes that affect price and operating cost.
Match the configuration
- Model year: Compare the same year when possible. A redesign, changed standard equipment, or a different warranty can make an older gas vehicle an unfair match for a newer hybrid.
- Trim and equipment: Match safety technology, seating capacity, infotainment, driver-assistance features, roof rails, and other equipment. A well-equipped gas trim against a minimally equipped hybrid can make the powertrain look more or less expensive than it really is.
- Drivetrain: Compare front-wheel drive with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with all-wheel drive. Do not use the fuel-economy rating for one drivetrain with the price of another.
- Size and capability: Check passenger room, cargo capacity, towing rating, and payload. A smaller hybrid that cannot perform the same job is not a cost-equivalent substitute.
- Transaction price: Record the actual dealer or seller price you could pay, including destination charges and dealer-installed items that you cannot remove. An advertised starting price is not a complete purchase figure.
Write down the exact trim, drivetrain, equipment, and price for each vehicle. If you change one of those items later, update every related input, including fuel economy, insurance, taxes, and expected resale value.
Set one ownership scenario for both vehicles
Use identical assumptions for the gas and hybrid SUVs unless the assumption is inherently vehicle-specific, such as its EPA fuel-economy rating or insurance quote. Decide these inputs before calculating:
- Ownership period: for example, five years or the number of years you expect to keep the SUV.
- Annual miles: use your likely mileage, not a generic average if your commute or driving pattern is unusual.
- Driving mix: estimate the share of city, highway, stop-and-go, winter, towing, and loaded driving.
- Local gasoline price: use a realistic price for the area where you buy most fuel, then test higher and lower prices.
- Down payment, loan term, and interest rate: use the offers you actually qualify for, or clearly label a market estimate as an assumption.
- Location: insurance, sales tax, registration, inspection, and local fees depend on where the vehicle is garaged and registered.
- Exit value: estimate what each SUV could be worth when you sell or trade it at the end of the period.
The EPA’s five-year fuel-cost comparison assumes 15,000 miles per year. That is a label assumption, not a prediction for your household. Replace it with your own annual mileage when your driving differs.

Build the cost worksheet
A worksheet prevents a low fuel bill from hiding a higher purchase price or a different resale outcome. Organize the inputs as follows.
| Cost category | What to enter for each SUV | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Negotiated transaction price, destination charge, required options, taxes, and fees | Use the same price definition for both vehicles. |
| Financing | Down payment, amount financed, annual percentage rate, loan term, and total interest | Compare interest expense separately from the vehicle price. |
| Fuel | EPA combined mpg, annual miles, local gasoline price, and driving adjustment | Calculate annual fuel cost, then multiply by the ownership period and test price changes. |
| Insurance | Quotes for the exact VIN or configuration and your garaging address | Use the same coverage limits and deductibles in every quote. |
| Taxes and registration | Sales or use tax, annual registration, inspection, property tax if applicable, and recurring fees | Apply location-specific amounts and note one-time versus recurring charges. |
| Maintenance and tires | Scheduled services, tire replacement, and expected wear items | Use the manufacturer schedule and a clearly identified estimate. |
| Repairs | Reasonable allowance for non-warranty repairs | Keep uncertain estimates visible instead of presenting them as facts. |
| Depreciation | Expected resale or trade-in value at the end of the period | Cost of depreciation equals purchase price minus ending value, adjusted consistently for taxes and fees. |
Purchase price and the hybrid premium
Calculate the hybrid’s incremental purchase cost from comparable transaction prices, not from two unrelated base-model prices. If the hybrid costs more up front, that premium is a real cost even if fuel savings later offset it. Include only incentives you can actually claim and document; do not assume a national rebate applies to every buyer or vehicle.
Fuel cost: use a transparent calculation
For a simple annual estimate, use:
annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ combined mpg × dollars per gallon
For the ownership period:
fuel cost over period = annual fuel cost × ownership years
For example, enter your own annual miles, each SUV’s EPA combined rating, and the gasoline price where you live. If you expect mileage, fuel prices, or driving conditions to change, calculate separate low, middle, and high cases rather than pretending one number is certain.

Financing: compare interest, not duplicated payments
Obtain an out-the-door price and financing offer for each SUV. Record the amount financed, rate, term, and total interest. A longer term can lower the required monthly payment while increasing total interest and extending the period in which you owe more than the vehicle is worth. If one vehicle receives a manufacturer-subsidized rate and the other does not, show that difference explicitly.
Do not treat a lower monthly payment as a lower ownership cost without checking the term and total interest. If you pay cash, set financing expense to zero for both vehicles; if you finance, use the buyer’s actual down payment and rate.
Insurance, taxes, registration, and fees
Request quotes for the same liability limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, drivers, and garaging address. A hybrid can have a different insurance price because of its value, repair costs, claims history, or equipment; the result is profile-specific.
Separate one-time purchase taxes and fees from annual registration, inspection, local property tax, and other recurring charges. A state or county calculator can provide the applicable formula, but the amount still depends on the transaction price, vehicle age, and location. Enter the actual jurisdiction rather than applying a national average.
Maintenance, tires, and repairs
Start with the manufacturer’s scheduled maintenance for the exact model and mileage. Add tires, brake work, fluids, filters, and other wear items when the schedule or your mileage makes them likely. Keep warranty-covered work separate from out-of-pocket work.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) cost-calculator methodology includes fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, license and registration, down payment, and loan payments. Its component averages and financing assumptions include historical inputs, so use that methodology as a checklist, not as a current personal quote. Replace broad averages with local prices and the service schedule for your selected SUVs.

Do not invent a repair advantage for either powertrain. Use documented warranty terms and a clearly labeled allowance for repairs that are not predictable from the schedule. Run a sensitivity case with a larger repair allowance if an older vehicle or high-mileage plan makes that risk material.

Depreciation is not a monthly bill, but it is an economic cost. EPA describes it as a loss that accumulates over the car’s lifetime. Estimate it as:
depreciation cost = purchase price − expected resale value
Use the same endpoint—private-party sale or trade-in—for both SUVs. Keep the estimate qualified because resale depends on mileage, condition, accident history, market demand, equipment, location, and the future price of fuel. If you cannot support a precise forecast, show a range and identify the assumption that drives it.

Edmunds’ five-year estimates illustrate why fuel economy alone cannot decide the comparison. For 2026 configurations, it lists the following fuel amounts:

| Vehicle configuration | Estimated fuel cost over five years | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Ford Escape Hybrid ST-Line Select AWD | $6,887 | Edmunds estimate for this specific configuration |
| 2026 Ford Escape ST-Line AWD | $8,946 | Edmunds estimate for this specific gas configuration |
The listed difference is $2,059 over five years. It is not a general hybrid savings figure: it applies to those two configurations and Edmunds’ assumptions. The same ownership estimate also includes depreciation, taxes and fees, financing, insurance, repairs, and maintenance. A different trim, mileage, fuel price, loan, location, or resale outcome can change the result.

Calculate the break-even point carefully
A basic fuel-only break-even calculation divides the hybrid’s extra purchase cost by its annual fuel savings:
fuel-only break-even years = hybrid premium ÷ annual fuel savings
This is only a screening tool. A total-cost break-even calculation must also include the difference in financing, insurance, taxes, maintenance, repairs, and depreciation. For a chosen ownership period, calculate:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
total cost = purchase price + financing + fuel + insurance + taxes and fees + maintenance and repairs − ending resale value
Then subtract the hybrid total from the gas total. A positive result means the hybrid costs less under those inputs; a negative result means the gas SUV costs less. If the values are close, show how the result changes when gasoline prices, annual miles, resale values, or repair allowances move. A break-even mileage is only as sound as the prices and assumptions entered.
Step-by-step comparison procedure
- Select the pair. Record model year, trim, drivetrain, standard equipment, options, and capability for one gas SUV and one conventional hybrid SUV.
- Collect transaction prices. Obtain out-the-door prices from dealers or sellers, including destination, required options, taxes, and fees. Do not rely only on advertised starting prices.
- Set the scenario. Choose one ownership period, annual mileage, driving mix, local gasoline price, location, and expected end date. Apply the same scenario to both.
- Enter fuel data. Use each vehicle’s EPA combined mpg and calculate annual and period fuel cost. Add sensitivity cases for fuel prices or mileage that could plausibly change.
- Enter financing. Use the actual down payment, amount financed, term, and rate. Record total interest separately from principal.
- Collect insurance quotes. Use identical coverage, deductibles, drivers, and garaging address for each exact configuration.
- Add taxes and fees. Separate one-time purchase charges from annual registration, inspection, and other recurring costs.
- Estimate service and repairs. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule, include tires and wear items, and label any repair allowance as an estimate.
- Estimate resale. Use the same sale method and mileage endpoint for both vehicles. Show a range when future value is uncertain.
- Compare totals. Display total cost, cost per year, cost per mile, the difference between vehicles, and the assumptions that matter most.
Common mistakes that distort the result
- Comparing unlike trims: A high-trim gas SUV and a base hybrid do not isolate the powertrain’s cost.
- Using different time horizons: Five years for one vehicle and ten years for the other makes depreciation, repairs, and fuel incomparable.
- Copying the EPA 15,000-mile assumption: Use it only as the label baseline; replace it with your mileage when appropriate.
- Treating EPA mpg as a guarantee: Weather, load, speed, maintenance, road conditions, and accessories affect actual consumption.
- Counting payments twice: Add either the purchase price plus financing interest, or the equivalent principal-and-interest structure—not both principal representations.
- Ignoring local costs: Insurance, taxes, registration, and fees can materially differ by address and driver.
- Assuming maintenance averages are current: AFDC’s cited averages and financing inputs are historical components, not individualized quotes.
- Leaving out depreciation: A lower operating bill can be overwhelmed by a higher purchase price or weaker resale value.
- Assuming a tax credit: Eligibility depends on the vehicle, acquisition date, buyer, and current rules.
- Reporting a universal winner: The result belongs to the stated pair and assumptions, not to every gas or hybrid SUV.
How to interpret the final result
If the hybrid costs less after every category is included, check whether that result survives reasonable changes in fuel price, annual mileage, insurance, financing, and resale value. If the gas SUV costs less, identify whether the difference comes from its lower transaction price, cheaper insurance, financing, or expected depreciation rather than assuming fuel economy is irrelevant.
Buyers who drive many miles, keep a vehicle for a long period, or spend substantial time in stop-and-go traffic may place more weight on fuel savings. Buyers with low mileage, a short ownership period, expensive financing, or a large hybrid premium should test whether they will keep the vehicle long enough to recover that premium. Those are decision factors, not guarantees; the worksheet supplies the answer for your situation.
Tax-credit and rule checks
The 2026 Fuel Economy Guide states that new electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, do not qualify for the credit discussed in that guide. That statement does not establish the treatment of conventional non-plug-in hybrids. Verify any tax benefit for the exact vehicle, buyer, acquisition date, and current federal and state rules before including it in the total.
Bottom line: compare the whole ownership period
Use a matched gas and hybrid SUV, one mileage and time horizon, and a worksheet that includes purchase price, financing, fuel, insurance, taxes, registration, maintenance, repairs, and depreciation. The hybrid’s fuel advantage is one input—not the verdict. A defensible choice is the vehicle with the lower calculated total under your documented assumptions, after you test how sensitive that result is to fuel prices, mileage, financing, local costs, and resale value.
