The reliable way to compare a petrol and an electric hot hatch is to calculate energy cost per mile from the exact cars, then apply the same annual mileage and ownership period. For petrol, multiply litres per mile by your local price per litre. For an EV, multiply kilowatt-hours per mile by the price you actually pay at home, work or public chargers, and blend those rates according to your charging pattern. Only after that should you add insurance, servicing, tyres, tax, finance and depreciation.

This guide uses UK figures and guidance available in October 2026. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) advisory rates effective from 1 September 2026 are useful benchmarks, but they are not a personalised quote and do not describe every hot hatch’s consumption.

Define what you are comparing before doing any arithmetic

“Running costs” can mean very different things. An energy-only comparison covers petrol or electricity. An annual running-cost comparison adds routine servicing, maintenance, tyres, insurance and vehicle tax. A whole-life comparison also includes purchase or lease payments, finance interest, depreciation and resale value. State the boundary at the top of your spreadsheet; otherwise an EV’s energy cost can be compared unfairly with a petrol car’s total ownership cost.

Fix the UK scope and the vehicles

Use the same country, prices, mileage and period for both cars. Name the precise generation, engine or motor, battery, gearbox, trim and wheel-and-tyre package. Two versions of the same hot hatch can have different official consumption figures, and larger wheels or performance tyres can alter real consumption.

Record the assumptions that drive the answer

  • Annual miles and the proportion driven in town, on A-roads and on motorways.
  • Purchase, finance or lease method, contract length and expected annual mileage.
  • Petrol price per litre, including the date and region.
  • EV electricity prices for home, workplace, destination and rapid public charging, plus the percentage of energy obtained at each.
  • Whether consumption is an official test-cycle figure, a dashboard reading, or owner-observed data, and the period over which it was collected.
  • Insurance quotations for the actual driver and postcode, service intervals, tyre sizes and tax rules applicable to the registration date.

Keeping these inputs visible makes a result reproducible and lets you replace a forecast with your own bills later.

UK energy-cost benchmarks effective from 1 September 2026

HMRC’s advisory fuel rates use broad vehicle categories. They are intended for company-car expense calculations and provide a consistent reference, not a performance-car test.

Vehicle or energy source HMRC advisory rate from 1 September 2026 How to interpret it
EV charging at home 7p per mile Rounded benchmark based on weighted electricity prices and vehicle efficiency.
EV slow or fast public charging 15p per mile Benchmark using public slow/fast charging prices; rapid charging can cost more.
Petrol engine up to 1,400cc 14p per mile Engine-size average, not an exact hot-hatch result.
Petrol engine 1,401–2,000cc 17p per mile Useful comparison point for many petrol hot hatches, but actual economy may differ substantially.
Petrol engine above 2,000cc 27p per mile Broad band average; a particular car may be higher or lower.

HMRC’s electric calculation uses a weighted efficiency of 3.59 miles per kWh, 24.47p/kWh home electricity and 54.00p/kWh slow/fast public charging. Dividing the unit price by 3.59 gives about 6.8p and 15.0p per mile, which HMRC rounds to 7p and 15p. The rates are published as advisory company-car rates, so use your own tariff and measured consumption for a personal forecast.

Calculate petrol cost from the exact car

Use litres per mile where possible

The basic equation is:

Petrol cost per mile = litres per mile × petrol price per litre

If the specification gives litres per 100 km, divide by 160.934 to convert to litres per mile. If it gives imperial miles per gallon, use 4.546 litres per imperial gallon:

Litres per mile = 4.546 ÷ imperial mpg

Do not mix imperial mpg with US gallons. Record the pump price and date because fuel prices vary by region and through the year. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) explains that its fuel-cost estimate combines a vehicle’s combined consumption with an average fuel price sampled at a point in time; it warns that actual prices vary.

Worked petrol benchmark

For a neutral illustration, use the HMRC 1,401–2,000cc benchmark of 17p per mile and 10,000 miles a year:

  • 17p × 10,000 miles = £1,700 a year.
  • Over four years at the same mileage, the energy total is £6,800, before price changes.

This is not a claim that every 1.4–2.0-litre hot hatch achieves 17p per mile. To personalise it, replace 17p with the result from your car’s measured litres per mile and your local pump price.

Calculate EV cost from consumption and charging location

Start with the car’s electrical consumption

The EV equation is:

EV cost per mile = kWh per mile × electricity price per kWh

If the specification states kWh/100 km, divide by 160.934 to obtain kWh per mile. If it states miles per kWh, divide the tariff by that efficiency. Calculate home and public charging separately; then weight each by the share of energy you obtain there.

Blend the charging mix instead of using one headline rate

Use this formula:

Blended EV cost per mile = (home share × home cost per mile) + (public share × public cost per mile)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, with the 2026 advisory rates, an 80% home/20% public split is (0.8 × 7p) + (0.2 × 15p) = 8.6p per mile. A driver charging only at public slow/fast points would use 15p per mile in this benchmark, while a driver with free workplace charging would need to enter the workplace price (zero only if it genuinely costs nothing and remains available).

Account for charging losses consistently

Consumption shown on a vehicle display may represent energy leaving the battery, while your meter records energy entering the car. If those measurement points differ, include charging losses and state the method. Do not silently apply a loss percentage that is not supported by your measurements. A practical approach is to divide miles driven by the kWh recorded by your home meter or charger over several billing periods, then use the same boundary for public-session data.

Why official figures and real roads diverge

The VCA’s guidance on using fuel-consumption data says listed consumption comes from a controlled laboratory rolling-road route. The electric calculation uses vehicle electrical-consumption data from the Certificate of Conformity. This controlled method allows fair comparison between models, but actual road consumption and cost may vary.

Factors that commonly move consumption

  • Motorway speed and repeated acceleration, especially in a high-performance drive mode.
  • Cold weather, battery temperature and use of cabin heating or air-conditioning.
  • Hills, congestion, payload, roof or bike equipment and tyre pressures.
  • Wheel diameter, tyre compound and alignment.
  • For EVs, charging efficiency, battery pre-conditioning and the proportion of rapid charging.

Use an official combined figure when you need a common baseline across cars, but label it as test-cycle data. For a buying decision, collect owner-observed or your own data from comparable routes and seasons, identify the source and period, and avoid presenting a single dashboard trip as a long-term average.

Charging access can dominate the result

Home charging is often the cheapest option, but it is not universal. Department for Transport guidance reported that 93% of respondents in its 2022 survey had access to home charging and 90% of those said they charged overnight. That is useful context, not a current guarantee for every household, renter or street.

Home, workplace and destination charging

Enter the actual tariff for each location, including standing-charge treatment if you are assessing the whole electricity bill rather than the marginal cost of charging. A wallbox can make overnight charging convenient for drivers with suitable off-street parking and installation permission, but it is not a requirement for every EV owner. A standard domestic socket, workplace point or destination charger may suit a lower-mileage pattern, subject to electrical safety and the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

Public charging and rapid sessions

The 15p-per-mile HMRC figure covers slow and fast public charging inputs used in its calculation. It should not be treated as a universal rapid-charging price. Public networks can add connection fees, minimum charges, subscriptions, parking costs or time-based billing. Record the amount paid and kWh delivered for each session, then calculate a weighted average.

Government guidance published with figures current in January 2024 described home charging at around 8p per mile, petrol/diesel at around 13p–17p per mile and public EV charging as roughly equivalent to petrol. Those figures are historical context, not current-rate guidance; use the September 2026 HMRC benchmarks or your live tariffs for present calculations.

Add the costs beyond energy

A credible ownership comparison adds the same categories for both cars and uses the same term and mileage.

Cost category How to make it comparable
Insurance Obtain quotes for the exact trim, driver, postcode, annual mileage and cover level. Hot-hatch premiums can differ widely even when power outputs are similar.
Servicing and maintenance Use the manufacturer schedule and published prices where available. Include inspections, fluids, brake work and warranty limits; do not assume an EV has no maintenance.
Tyres Price the actual size, load rating and performance compound, then estimate replacement frequency from your mileage and driving.
Vehicle tax Apply the UK tax rules and registration date for each car. Do not transfer an older car’s rate to a newer one.
Finance or lease Use the same deposit treatment, contract mileage, term and interest assumptions. For a lease, include excess-mileage and return-condition charges where relevant.
Purchase and depreciation Compare transaction prices and expected resale values over the same period. State whether prices are cash, financed or leased.
Charging equipment Include a wallbox, installation and any electrical work only when the EV buyer actually needs them; show the one-off cost separately from electricity.

Energy can be the largest visible difference, but depreciation, insurance and finance can outweigh it. A lower pence-per-mile figure does not automatically make an EV cheaper to own over a short period or at low mileage.

Use government examples without treating them as hot-hatch results

A 2026 UK government EV campaign illustrates annual running costs of £1,902 for an example EV and £3,320 for an example petrol car. The calculation assumes 10,000 miles a year and includes energy, insurance and maintenance. It is not a hot-hatch comparison and should not be transplanted to a different vehicle, driver or tariff.

The campaign’s supporting notes also emphasise that official consumption and range figures are produced under laboratory conditions. Driving style, weather, heating or air-conditioning, road topography and congestion alter real-world results. Use the example to understand the categories included, not as a guaranteed saving.

Energy Saving Trust’s total-cost-of-ownership examples show why the time horizon matters: its illustrations use 10,000 miles a year, a four-year lease and an eight-year purchase horizon, with WLTP efficiency inputs and historic price and tax assumptions. Rebuild those assumptions with current quotes before applying the method to a hot hatch.

A repeatable worksheet for two specific hot hatches

  1. Choose the pair. Record exact model year, trim, motor or engine, gearbox, battery, wheels and tyres, list price or transaction price and warranty.
  2. Set the boundary. Decide whether the headline result is energy-only, annual running cost or whole-life cost. Choose a common annual mileage and ownership or lease term.
  3. Collect petrol evidence. Enter official combined consumption and an owner-observed figure if available. Convert both to litres per mile and apply the dated local petrol price.
  4. Collect EV evidence. Enter official kWh/100 km or miles/kWh, then gather home, workplace and public tariffs. Note whether each figure includes charging losses.
  5. Measure your charging split. Estimate or log the percentage of energy bought at each location. Keep rapid charging separate if its price structure differs.
  6. Calculate annual energy. Multiply each car’s cost per mile by the same annual mileage. Show the formula and every unit conversion.
  7. Add ownership categories. Insert insurance quotes, scheduled servicing, maintenance, tyres, tax, finance, purchase price and expected resale value using matching dates and assumptions.
  8. Run sensitivity cases. Recalculate for lower and higher annual mileage, home-heavy and public-heavy charging, winter consumption and alternative fuel or electricity prices.
  9. Report uncertainty. Label test-cycle, observed and quoted values, identify one-time costs, and give a range where the evidence is a range.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a generic EV average for a performance model

Correct it by using the exact vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity or official specification, then checking comparable real-road data. A heavy, powerful hot hatch on wide tyres will not necessarily match a small-EV average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing an EV’s home tariff with a petrol car’s worst-case fuel price

Use dated, location-relevant prices for both. If the petrol figure is a national average, identify the source and sampling date; if the EV figure is a promotional overnight tariff, state eligibility and duration.

Assuming every EV mile is charged at home

Log workplace, destination and public sessions. A driver without off-street parking can have a materially different blended cost from a driver who charges overnight.

Mixing energy-only and total-cost figures

Keep separate subtotals for energy, annual running costs and whole-life ownership. Add the same categories to both cars before declaring an overall winner.

Ignoring the measurement boundary

Battery consumption, wall-meter consumption and public-session billing can differ because of charging losses and session fees. State which boundary each number uses and avoid combining incompatible figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating advisory rates as guarantees

HMRC rates are consistent benchmarks. They are not a promise of what a particular hot hatch, tariff or driver will pay. Replace them with your own measured data when the decision depends on a small difference.

What the comparison can legitimately conclude

If two cars are matched for mileage and ownership period, an EV charged mainly at home will usually show a lower energy-cost line under the September 2026 UK advisory benchmarks. As the public-charging share rises, that advantage narrows; at the 15p-per-mile public benchmark it is close to the 14p–17p petrol bands and could disappear once vehicle-specific consumption, charging fees or other ownership costs are included.

The defensible conclusion for a buyer is therefore conditional: identify the exact hot hatches, measure or source their real consumption, apply your own petrol and electricity prices, and then include the non-energy costs that matter over your chosen term. A single headline “cost per mile” without those inputs is not a real-world comparison.
