How to Compare the Corvette ZR1X and Mustang GTD on a Drag Strip

MotorTrend’s comparable test puts the Corvette ZR1X at 9.2 seconds and the Mustang GTD at 10.5 seconds. Here is how traction, tires, aero, timing and surface conditions shape that result—and how to compare them fairly.

The strongest published side-by-side quarter-mile comparison gives the Corvette ZR1X the clear advantage: MotorTrend recorded 9.2 seconds at 153.3 mph for the ZR1X and 10.5 seconds at 134.9 mph for the rear-drive Mustang GTD. Those numbers are useful, but they are not a universal prediction or a perfectly identical setup. Chevrolet’s separate 8.675-second claim was made on a prepped track with specific tires, aero and calibration, while MotorTrend tested the two cars under its own procedures. To compare them properly, keep the track, surface, weather, tires, tire pressures, aero, fuel, launch settings, driver and timing method as consistent as possible, and report elapsed time together with trap speed.

The published result: ZR1X ahead, but not under identical conditions

MotorTrend’s 2026 comparison is the cleanest single source for a direct quarter-mile reference. Its Corvette ZR1X covered the distance in 9.2 seconds at 153.3 mph. The Mustang GTD required 10.5 seconds and reached 134.9 mph. The difference is 1.3 seconds and 18.4 mph, large enough to show that the ZR1X has a substantial straight-line advantage in that test.

Do not turn those figures into a promise that every ZR1X will run 9.2 seconds or every GTD will run 10.5 seconds. MotorTrend’s test cars, surface, weather, rollout convention, preparation and launch procedures matter. A quarter-mile number belongs to the exact vehicle and test protocol that produced it.

Chevrolet’s own headline figure is quicker still: 8.675 seconds at 159 mph. General Motors says that pass was made at US 131 Motorsports Park in October 2025 on a prepped surface, using pump gasoline, standard-equipment Michelin PS4S tires, standard aero, production 50-state street-legal calibration and available carbon-fiber wheels. GM also reports a 1.68-second 0-to-60-mph time and says multiple back-to-back passes were below 8.8 seconds.

That 8.675-second result is not an apples-to-apples match for the GTD’s 10.5-second MotorTrend result. It is a manufacturer test under a different surface and procedure, and no matching Ford manufacturer quarter-mile claim is cited in the sources used here. Keep GM’s number in a manufacturer-claim category and the 9.2-versus-10.5 numbers in the independent comparison category.

What makes the cars different at the launch

Corvette ZR1X: hybrid all-wheel drive and 1,250 horsepower

GM says the ZR1X combines a 5.5-liter twin-turbo LT7 V8 making 1,064 horsepower with a front electric drive unit capable of 186 horsepower. Combined output is rated at 1,250 horsepower. The electric front axle can continue delivering power through 160 mph before disconnecting.

That front motor gives the ZR1X driven wheels at both ends during the critical launch phase. It can add immediate torque while the gasoline engine and rear tires build speed, reducing the traction burden on the rear axle. Once the front system disconnects at higher speed, the car’s power-to-weight and aerodynamic efficiency determine how strongly it continues accelerating.

Mustang GTD: 815 horsepower through the rear wheels

Ford lists 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque for the GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8. The car sends that output to the rear wheels through a carbon-fiber driveshaft and rear-mounted eight-speed transaxle. Ford says the layout produces near-50/50 weight distribution, while the official product information lists Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires.

Near-even weight distribution helps the GTD remain balanced, but it does not change the fundamental launch challenge of putting 815 horsepower through two driven tires. Wheelspin, traction-control intervention, surface grip and weight transfer can cost time before the car reaches the point where its engine power becomes the dominant factor.

Why launch traction matters more than peak horsepower alone

The ZR1X has 435 more horsepower on GM’s combined-output specification and electrified all-wheel drive. The GTD has rear-wheel drive and less power, so the first 60 feet and the first half of the track can decide the result before top-end acceleration becomes the focus. In MotorTrend’s July 2026 runway race, the publication noted that all-wheel-drive cars jumped the rear-drive GTD off the line. That event illustrates the traction principle, but it was not a controlled quarter-mile laboratory comparison.

Tires, aero and alignment can change the answer

ZR1X tire and package differences

GM identifies Michelin PS4S tires as standard equipment. Its ZTK Performance Package is firmer and uses Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. Those compounds and constructions do not provide the same balance of street behavior, heat tolerance, launch grip and consistency. A ZTK car should therefore be compared with a GTD on its documented tire setup, not casually grouped with a standard-tire ZR1X.

GM’s 8.675-second pass specifically used standard PS4S tires and standard aero, despite the car’s available carbon-fiber wheels. MotorTrend’s independent ZR1X test used optional ZTK, Cup 2R tires, carbon-fiber aero equipment and a racetrack alignment. The two ZR1X figures are measurements of different configurations and environments.

Downforce versus drag

High-downforce aero can improve stability and cornering but adds resistance on a straight run. Low-drag trim can improve acceleration and terminal speed if the car remains traction-limited rather than stability-limited. MotorTrend’s July 2026 runway account says its ZR1X was changed from high-downforce configuration to a low-drag setup before the race. That change means the runway result should not be used as a direct substitute for a quarter-mile pass made in high-downforce trim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alignment and tire condition

MotorTrend’s independent ZR1X test used a racetrack alignment. Alignment settings affect the tire contact patch and can influence both launch behavior and rolling resistance. Tire age, heat cycles and pressure also matter. The Mustang received fresh Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires for MotorTrend’s runway event; note that fact whenever using that event as an example.

How to read elapsed time and trap speed

Elapsed time measures the whole run

Elapsed time, or ET, includes the launch, gear changes and acceleration all the way to the finish line. It is the primary measure for deciding which car covered a quarter mile sooner. A car that launches harder can post a better ET even if its engine produces less speed near the finish.

Trap speed shows acceleration later in the run

Trap speed is the vehicle’s speed at the timing point near the finish. It helps separate launch performance from sustained acceleration. In the MotorTrend comparison, the ZR1X’s 153.3-mph trap speed versus the GTD’s 134.9 mph indicates that the ZR1X was not merely gaining time in the first few feet; it was also accelerating more strongly through the latter part of the quarter mile.

Never use trap speed by itself to declare the winner. A car can record a high trap speed after a poor launch and still lose on ET. Report both values, along with the timing system and rollout convention.

What the independent ZR1X test tells you about conditions

MotorTrend’s separate February 27, 2026 analysis recorded the ZR1X at 9.24 seconds and 153.3 mph at a streetlike proving ground. The publication removed one-foot rollout and applied SAE J1394 weather correction. Its test car had optional ZTK, carbon-fiber aero equipment, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires and a racetrack alignment.

MotorTrend explained that its 9.24-second result differed from GM’s 8.675-second prepped-track pass because the environments and configurations were different. The example is valuable even when you are not choosing between the two cars: it demonstrates why a manufacturer’s prepared-surface number and an independent proving-ground number should not be placed in one unqualified ranking.

A procedure for a fair ZR1X-versus-GTD drag comparison

  1. Choose one sanctioned quarter-mile facility. Use the same track for both cars and document whether the surface is prepped or unprepped. Do not compare a prepped-track run by one vehicle with an unprepped run by the other without a prominent qualification.
  2. Use the same weather window. Run the cars as close together in time as practical. Record ambient temperature, track temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind and elevation when the facility provides them. Weather correction can help, but it does not erase differences in surface preparation or hardware.
  3. Write down each car’s complete specification. Include model year, package, wheel material, tire brand and model, tire size, tire pressure, alignment, aero setting, fuel level and any software or calibration setting that the manufacturer permits.
  4. Match fuel type and fuel load. GM’s 8.675-second claim used pump gasoline. Use the same documented fuel grade where the manufacturers permit it, and record the fuel level because weight affects acceleration.
  5. Warm the tires consistently. Agree on a staging and burnout procedure that both vehicles can safely use. Record tire temperature or the repeatable warm-up method rather than allowing one car a substantially different preparation.
  6. Follow each car’s own launch procedure. Do not assume the ZR1X’s hybrid all-wheel-drive controls and the GTD’s rear-drive launch settings should be operated identically. Use the documented procedure for each model and record traction-control, transmission and launch-control settings.
  7. Use one timing standard. Keep the same timing equipment, start beam, finish beam and rollout convention for every pass. State whether a one-foot rollout is included or removed.
  8. Use a defined driver protocol. The same driver can reduce variation if that driver is trained on both cars; otherwise define the driver assignment and practice procedure in advance. Do not select a result from a driver who had substantially more attempts in one car.
  9. Make repeated passes. Run enough passes to show consistency, while allowing the cars and drivers to return to safe operating temperatures. Publish the best pass and the spread of the valid passes rather than a single unexplained outlier.
  10. Publish ET and trap speed together. Add 60-foot and 0-to-60 data if the timing system measures them, but do not substitute a 0-to-60 run for a quarter-mile result.

How to separate the major categories of evidence

Evidence category Example How to use it
Manufacturer claim GM’s 8.675 seconds at 159 mph on a prepped surface. Report the stated conditions and identify it as a GM result. Do not call it a matched test against the GTD.
Independent instrumented comparison MotorTrend’s 9.2 seconds at 153.3 mph for the ZR1X and 10.5 seconds at 134.9 mph for the GTD. Use it as the best direct side-by-side reference found, while retaining the publication’s configuration and procedure caveats.
Independent single-car test MotorTrend’s 9.24-second, 153.3-mph ZR1X proving-ground result. Use it to show how surface, rollout, weather correction, tires and alignment affect a number.
Event or runway race MotorTrend’s July 2026 race after changing the ZR1X to low-drag trim and fitting fresh Cup 2R tires to the GTD. Use it to illustrate launch traction and setup effects, not as a controlled quarter-mile benchmark.

Understanding the manufacturer statements

General Motors President Mark Reuss said, “When we made the revolutionary shift to a mid-engine platform, this is the type of performance we knew was possible.” Corvette development engineer and test driver Stefan Frick said, “There are many different parts and subsystems on this car, with teams across the company responsible for them.” Both statements appear in GM’s January 13, 2026 release about the 8.675-second pass. They are manufacturer comments about the vehicle and development effort, not independent test conclusions.

Safety, legality and operating limits

Use a sanctioned drag strip or other closed course with appropriate timing, safety equipment and track procedures. Ford’s 2025 Mustang GTD owner’s manual describes Drag Strip mode as optimizing the adaptive dampers for straight-line maximum acceleration depending on the vehicle’s options. The manual also says the mode is for closed-circuit drag strips and is not intended for public roads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the applicable model-year owner’s manual for both cars, the facility’s staging and burnout rules, and any local requirements for helmets, restraints, fire equipment and technical inspection. Do not practice launch procedures on public roads. A powerful hybrid all-wheel-drive car and a 815-horsepower rear-drive car can reach unsafe speeds quickly, and a public road cannot provide the controlled surface, runoff and emergency support of a sanctioned facility.

Decision guide: which result should you quote?

  • Answering who was quicker in one published comparison: quote MotorTrend’s 9.2-second, 153.3-mph ZR1X and 10.5-second, 134.9-mph GTD figures together.
  • Discussing the quickest ZR1X number: quote GM’s 8.675 seconds at 159 mph and immediately state that it was a prepped-surface manufacturer pass with pump gas, standard PS4S tires, standard aero, production 50-state calibration and available carbon-fiber wheels.
  • Explaining why another ZR1X test was slower: cite MotorTrend’s 9.24-second proving-ground result and identify its no-rollout treatment, SAE J1394 correction, ZTK package, Cup 2R tires, carbon-fiber aero and racetrack alignment.
  • Explaining the launch gap: focus on the ZR1X’s electrified all-wheel drive versus the GTD’s rear-wheel drive, not only the horsepower totals.
  • Planning your own test: control surface, weather, configuration, tire preparation, launch method, timing and driver protocol, then publish repeated-pass data.

Bottom line for a drag-strip comparison

The Corvette ZR1X is the faster car in the best directly comparable published quarter-mile test, with a 9.2-second pass at 153.3 mph versus 10.5 seconds at 134.9 mph for the Mustang GTD. Its 1,250-horsepower hybrid system and front-driven axle give it a decisive launch-traction advantage over the GTD’s 815-horsepower rear-drive layout. GM’s 8.675-second result demonstrates the ZR1X’s potential on a prepared surface, but it should remain a separately labeled manufacturer claim. The only defensible apples-to-apples verdict comes from running both cars at the same facility, in the same conditions, with fully documented hardware and repeated passes.
