Then add up each vehicle’s real purchase and financing costs, energy, maintenance and tires, insurance, registration, and any home-charging equipment you need. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) Vehicle Cost Calculator can screen up to eight vehicles; treat its result as an estimate and replace generic inputs with your own.
What total cost of ownership means
Total cost of ownership (TCO) is the cost of buying and using a vehicle over a chosen period, less the value you expect to recover when you sell or trade it. It is not the same as the sticker price, the monthly payment, or the amount spent charging. An electric car with a lower purchase price can still cost more to own if its energy, insurance, tires, financing or resale assumptions differ.

This is a framework, not a promise that every cost can be forecast precisely. The AFDC calculator’s methodology includes purchase and financing, fuel or electricity, maintenance and tires, insurance, license and registration. Include home charging equipment if it applies to your household, and make the calculator’s assumptions match your situation as closely as its inputs allow.
Choose one consistent way to represent financing. If you count the vehicle’s purchase price, add financing charges such as interest, but do not also add all loan principal payments as a second purchase cost. If instead you compare cash flows, count the payments and the remaining value consistently. Mixing the two approaches can make the same expense appear twice.
Start with the 2026 LEAF’s trim-specific baseline
Nissan’s current U.S. specifications provide three 2026 LEAF trims. The prices below are manufacturer starting MSRPs, not guaranteed transaction prices. Range and combined MPGe are EPA estimates published by Nissan; they are useful reference points, not a prediction of what a particular owner will achieve.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| 2026 U.S. LEAF trim | Starting MSRP | EPA-estimated range | EPA-estimated combined efficiency | Battery specification stated by Nissan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S+ | $29,990 | 303 miles | 121 MPGe | 75-kWh battery |
| SV+ | $34,230 | 288 miles | 114 MPGe | Not stated by trim in the cited 2026 specification |
| Platinum+ | $38,990 | 259 miles | 103 MPGe | Not stated by trim in the cited 2026 specification |
These figures are from Nissan USA’s 2026 model specifications. The table helps establish which LEAF you are evaluating; it does not identify the cheapest trim for every buyer. Compare the equipment you actually want and the price you can actually buy the car for. A more expensive trim’s added features may matter to you, but the trim’s higher MSRP and different published range and efficiency also belong in the comparison.
Do not use the S+ battery capacity as though it were a complete energy-cost figure, or assume it applies to every trim. Battery capacity is not the same as the amount of electricity a household buys over a year. For energy-cost comparisons, use each candidate’s trim-specific energy-use data in the AFDC calculator or another consistent calculation method, along with your electricity rates and driving distance.

Build a fair comparison in seven steps
1. Fix the ownership period and annual mileage
Choose a realistic period—such as the number of years you expect to keep the cars—and apply it to every candidate. Set the same annual miles for each vehicle unless you have a specific reason to model different use. More miles generally mean more energy use and tire wear, while a longer ownership period changes how much weight to give resale value, maintenance and equipment costs.
Use your expected driving rather than an arbitrary “average.” If you have an annual odometer history, start there. If you expect a commute or household routine to change, model that as a separate case. Keep the period and mileage visible beside the results: a TCO total without those assumptions is not a useful comparison.
2. Use actual acquisition prices, not just MSRP
For the LEAF, begin with the relevant trim’s starting MSRP, then replace it with a realistic transaction price when you have a dealer quote. Include destination charges, taxes, dealer fees, options and any other charges that apply to the specific vehicle and buyer. Do the equivalent for each competing EV, using the exact model, trim and equipment being considered.
Keep one-time costs separate from recurring costs so it is clear what is driving the result. If you are comparing financed purchases, use consistent assumptions about down payment, loan term and interest rate. Do not compare a cash purchase of one vehicle with a financed purchase of another and interpret the difference as a vehicle-cost advantage.
3. Apply only incentives you can verify
Do not subtract the federal clean-vehicle tax credits from a 2026 purchase baseline: AFDC says those credits were available for vehicles acquired before September 30, 2025. Incentive eligibility is date-sensitive, and programs can also depend on the buyer, vehicle and location. Check AFDC’s incentives database, then confirm applicable state, local and utility programs with the administering source before entering any savings.

Record the program, the vehicle and buyer qualifications, and whether the benefit is available at purchase or later. If eligibility or the amount is uncertain, leave it out of the base case and make a separate scenario only after you verify it. This avoids making an EV appear less expensive based on a benefit the buyer may not receive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Estimate electricity use for your driving and charging mix
Use the specific trim’s energy-use data and your annual miles. The LEAF’s published combined MPGe is a standardized comparison measure, not a utility bill or a direct estimate of your annual charging expense. Your result depends on how much you drive, the energy-use assumption for the exact vehicle, and what you pay for charging.
Separate expected home, workplace and public charging when their prices differ. Use your actual residential rate for home charging and the applicable price information for other charging you expect to use. A single assumed electricity price can misstate the cost if a substantial share of charging happens at a different rate. If you do not know the future charging mix, enter a reasonable base case and test a different mix rather than presenting one annual bill as certain.
Compare candidates on the same annual miles and charging assumptions. If an alternative EV has no established input in the calculator or source you are using, do not silently substitute the LEAF’s figure; identify the missing input and avoid treating the outputs as directly comparable until you have consistent data.
5. Add maintenance, tires, insurance and registration
AFDC’s methodology includes maintenance and tires, insurance, license and registration. These costs are not automatically equal across EVs. Use vehicle-specific estimates where available, insurer quotes for the exact vehicle and driver, and local registration and fee information. Treat tire costs as their own line item if your estimate separates them, and do not count them again inside another maintenance figure.

Nissan says routine EV maintenance is lower than for gasoline vehicles because EVs have fewer moving parts. That is a manufacturer’s general claim, not an independently verified LEAF-specific savings estimate in the cited material. For a LEAF-versus-EV comparison, do not assume either car’s maintenance is zero or that the LEAF has a guaranteed maintenance-cost advantage. Compare the relevant vehicles’ actual schedules and costs on the same time and mileage basis.
6. Include charging equipment you will need
Nissan describes an included mobile charge cord for 120V/240V outlets and a marketplace for home charging and electrification solutions. The cord’s inclusion does not establish that it will meet your routine charging needs, that your electrical service is suitable, or that installation will be unnecessary. Add the cost of a Level 2 home EV charger and installation only if your plan requires them, using an estimate for your home rather than a generic assumption.
Before relying on home charging in the cost model, check the vehicle’s connector and charging requirements, your electrical service and the installation conditions. The cited information does not validate a particular charger model or establish a universal installation cost. If you rent, park away from home or cannot install equipment, build the comparison around the charging access and prices actually available to you rather than assuming a home-charging setup.
7. Subtract a clearly labeled resale estimate
Resale value can materially affect TCO, but no directly comparable current residual-value figure for the 2026 LEAF versus other EVs is established here. Use an identified estimate for each exact vehicle, trim and ownership period if you have one. Do not present an unsupported resale forecast as a known fact.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because resale estimates are uncertain, calculate at least a lower and a higher resale case. Keep the assumptions visible and apply the same valuation approach to every candidate. This sensitivity check shows whether the result depends on a small difference in speculative resale values; it does not turn those estimates into a guarantee.

Use AFDC’s calculator as a screening tool
The DOE AFDC Vehicle Cost Calculator supports comparisons of up to eight vehicles and can use vehicle price and electricity-use inputs. It provides a useful starting point because its methodology brings together purchase and financing, fuel or electricity, maintenance and tires, insurance, license and registration. The output is a high-level estimate, so check its inputs rather than treating the result as a quote for your household.
- Select the LEAF trim and comparison vehicles. Make the model year and trim match the vehicles you are considering. The 2026 LEAF’s S+, SV+ and Platinum+ have different published MSRP, range and combined MPGe figures; do not enter a generic LEAF if the calculator allows a more specific selection.
- Set shared ownership assumptions. Enter the same ownership period and annual driving for each car. Keep financing assumptions consistent, and note any calculator defaults that you cannot change.
- Replace generic prices with purchase estimates. Use a current quote or a clearly labeled expected transaction price, adding destination, taxes, fees and options as appropriate. Apply any incentive only after verifying eligibility and timing.
- Review energy inputs. Use data for the exact trim and align the electricity-price assumption with your home, work and public charging mix. If the calculator cannot represent that mix, note the limitation and make a separate scenario.
- Check non-energy costs. Review the maintenance and tire, insurance, license and registration assumptions. Replace them with vehicle- and location-specific information where possible.
- Account for charging equipment and resale outside the output if needed. If your household needs equipment or installation and the calculator does not include it, add a separate line. Likewise, ensure the resale assumption is explicit and applied consistently.
- Run sensitivity cases. Change one uncertain input at a time—such as public-charging share or resale estimate—to see whether it changes which EV appears less expensive. Save the assumptions alongside the result.
The calculator is most useful for a consistent first pass. If its available inputs do not match your driving, location or charging setup, the honest conclusion is that the output is only a screening estimate, not a complete personalized cost forecast.
How to interpret the result without overstating it
Compare the total over the full ownership period, then divide by years or miles only if you label that average clearly. An average cost per year can help compare different time horizons, but it can conceal one-time costs and uncertainty. Keep the total, the period and major assumptions together so the average is not mistaken for a fixed annual bill.
Look at the cost categories as well as the final total. A lower TCO might come from a lower purchase quote, cheaper electricity, a more favorable insurance quote or a higher assumed resale value. Those causes have different confidence levels and may not apply to another driver. If a single speculative assumption accounts for the apparent difference, report the comparison as uncertain rather than declaring a winner.
- Specifications: Nissan’s MSRP, range and MPGe are published 2026 LEAF figures; MSRP is a starting price and range and MPGe are estimates.
- Personal inputs: transaction price, financing, electricity rates, charging mix, insurance and registration depend on the buyer and location.
- Forecasts: future resale and some ownership costs require estimates. Label them and test alternatives.
- Eligibility: incentives require verification for the purchase date, buyer and vehicle.
Do not convert a difference in the calculator’s output into a guaranteed savings claim. The result describes the assumptions entered. If your annual mileage, local rates, charging access, finance terms or resale outcome differs, your actual cost can differ too.
Warranty: a coverage term, not a life expectancy
Nissan lists an 8-year/100,000-mile lithium-ion battery limited warranty for the current 2026 LEAF, whichever occurs first. Include warranty coverage in your ownership review, and read the applicable terms and conditions for what is covered. The duration is not a prediction of battery life and does not establish a battery replacement cost.
Compare each candidate’s applicable battery warranty using the exact model year and terms, rather than assuming coverage is identical across brands or trims. Do not turn a warranty period into a projected repair expense or a claim that a battery will need replacement at a particular age.

Quick Recap
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing one car’s MSRP with another car’s transaction price. Use comparable real purchase prices or label each as an estimate.
- Using different annual mileage or ownership periods. That changes energy, wear and resale effects, so it obscures the vehicle comparison.
- Treating MPGe as a dollar cost. Pair vehicle energy use with annual miles and the buyer’s electricity rates.
- Assuming all charging is at home. Public and workplace rates and access can differ; model the expected mix.
- Counting the federal vehicle credit in a 2026 base case. AFDC states those credits were available for vehicles acquired before September 30, 2025; verify other programs instead.
- Assuming EV maintenance is negligible or identical. Compare the actual maintenance and tire inputs for each vehicle.
- Ignoring home-charging setup. Include equipment and installation if needed, but base the estimate on the household’s electrical and parking situation.
- Using a confident resale number without support. Mark estimates as estimates and test how the ranking changes under alternate values.
- Double-counting finance costs. Choose a consistent purchase-price or cash-flow approach and count principal only once.
