1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe reliable way to compare SUVs is to put every candidate on the same measurement basis: identical model year, market, trim and drivetrain; the same ground-clearance condition; and the same boot-volume convention. Then test the numbers against your parking space, access route and the objects you actually carry. A larger figure is not automatically more useful if it was measured differently or leaves you with an opening that cannot take your pram, dog crate, bicycle or suitcase.
Use a three-part worksheet for each SUV: ground clearance, exterior fit and boot usability. Record the published value, its units and measurement method, then verify the dimensions with the exact vehicle you can buy. Manufacturer specifications are valuable starting points, but they are not a substitute for checking an opening, load lip and usable shape.

Why SUV specifications are easy to misread
Specification tables look precise, yet the same label can hide different test conditions. Ground clearance may be quoted with the vehicle unladen, with a driver, at curb weight or with a full load. Cargo volume may describe the space behind the second row, the space with seats folded, or a maximum figure measured to the roof. Width may exclude mirrors, include folded mirrors or show the widest body point.

An SUV showing 8.2 inches of clearance is not directly ahead of one showing 8.1 inches if the first is measured unladen and the second with a driver and luggage. Treat the qualification as part of the number, not as fine print.

Build an apples-to-apples comparison sheet
Make one row for each candidate and keep the source and access date beside every figure. Do not mix a United States specification with a United Kingdom grade or assume that a similarly named trim has the same suspension, wheels or drivetrain.
| Category | Record | Check before comparing |
|---|---|---|
| Ground clearance | Published figure and units | Unladen, with driver, curb, or fully loaded; exact trim and drivetrain |
| Exterior fit | Length, width, height, wheelbase and mirror width where supplied | Parking bay, garage opening, access route, turning space and local obstacles |
| Boot usability | Seats-up and seats-folded figures; measurement convention | Window or roof measurement, sub-trunk inclusion, opening width and height, load-lip height and the shape of your own items |
Write units in every cell. Convert inches to centimetres or cubic feet to litres only after recording the original value, and label the conversion as your calculation. Rounding can make two different measurements appear identical, so retain the manufacturer’s precision.
Compare ground clearance by condition
Identify the stated load condition
Ground clearance is the vertical gap between the lowest relevant point of the vehicle and the road. The lowest point can vary with underbody shields, exhaust components, suspension design and wheel-and-tyre specification. More importantly, the body settles as occupants and cargo are added.

Honda’s UK specifications illustrate why labels matter: its ZR-V and CR-V pages publish separate conditions, including driver and full-load or non-load figures. Honda’s US release for the 2026 Passport labels its 8.3-inch figure as unladen. Those numbers should not be placed in a single ranking without preserving the conditions beside them.
Use the clearance that matches your roads
- Mostly paved urban driving: a curb or unladen figure can help explain ramp and kerb clearance, but tyre pressure, passengers and approach angle still affect real contact risk.
- Frequent passengers or a loaded boot: prioritise a full-load figure if the manufacturer provides one. It describes the vehicle closer to the way you use it.
- Rutted tracks or steep access roads: clearance is only one part of the answer. Approach, breakover and departure angles, wheelbase and underbody protection also matter; the cited specifications do not establish a universal minimum clearance for any particular road.
Examples, kept in their original context
Honda’s 2026 US Passport specification release gives 8.3 inches of unladen ground clearance. The release separates trim columns, so confirm the column for the version you are considering rather than applying the figure to every Passport.
Chevrolet’s 2024 US release for the 2025 Equinox lists clearance at curb of 8.08 inches for LT, 8.2 inches for RS and 8.05 inches for ACTIV. These are model-year and trim-specific values, not a general Equinox measurement. Chevrolet also cautions that cargo and load capacity are limited by weight and distribution.
The small differences between those Equinox trims are a useful warning: trim names, wheel packages and suspension settings can change the published number. Record the drivetrain and wheel specification whenever the table provides them.

Use exterior dimensions to solve real fit problems
Length and wheelbase
Overall length determines whether the SUV fits your garage or parking bay, but wheelbase and overhangs affect how it turns into that space. Measure the usable floor length, not just the nominal bay. Leave room for the garage door, a wall-mounted shelf and the ability to open the tailgate without hitting anything.
For an outdoor bay, check the distance to a kerb, bollard or neighbouring vehicle. A few centimetres at the nose may be unusable if the tailgate needs to swing or lift. If you park on a slope, measure at the position where the vehicle actually rests rather than relying on a level-plan drawing.
Width, mirrors and access routes
Manufacturers may publish body width with mirrors folded and extended. Use the extended figure for driving through a gate and the folded figure only for the final parked position when you can safely fold the mirrors. If no mirror width is stated, measure the candidate car or obtain the exact value from the manufacturer’s specification for that grade.
Measure the narrowest point on your route: gate posts, garage reveals, a shared lane or a charging point beside the bay. Add a clearance margin for steering correction and mirror movement. A vehicle that technically fits body-to-body can still be impractical if the mirrors cannot pass or the doors cannot open.

Overall height usually describes the vehicle without accessories. Roof rails, crossbars, a roof box, an aerial or an open tailgate can exceed the published figure. Measure the lowest garage beam and the highest point of the equipped SUV, then keep a margin for a ramp or uneven floor. Check the height of the tailgate in its fully raised position if the garage is tight.
Understand what boot-volume figures actually measure
Seats-up, seats-folded and maximum volume
Always separate the everyday seats-up space from the seats-folded figure. A seats-up number answers whether your normal luggage fits while carrying passengers. A folded-seat number describes occasional bulky loads and may require removing a parcel shelf or using a different loading height.
Honda’s 2026 US Passport release reports 44 cubic feet behind the second row, 83.8 cubic feet as standard volume behind the first row and 104.6 cubic feet as maximum volume behind the first row. The release distinguishes these configurations and cites SAE J1100 in its notes. Do not treat the maximum value as the space available with five occupants and the cargo cover in place.

Chevrolet’s 2024 US release for the 2025 Equinox gives 29.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 63.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. Those figures are tied to that US model year and should not be transferred to another market or a different seat arrangement.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Window line, roof line and measurement standards
A cargo volume measured to the window line is not equivalent to one measured to the roof. Roof-line measurements can include space above the parcel shelf that you cannot safely use with luggage stacked under the cover. Record the convention exactly as written.
Honda UK identifies its cited boot figures as VDA. That convention should be compared with another VDA figure, not automatically with a manufacturer using a different method. Honda’s US Passport notes reference SAE J1100, which is another reason to keep the standard beside the number.
Check whether a sub-trunk is included. Mazda’s European-specification CX-30 information reports 430 litres of luggage capacity including the sub-trunk, measured in-house by Mazda. The inclusion changes how much useful floor space you have for tall or rigid items, even when the headline volume looks generous.
Measure the opening, load lip and usable shape
Volume alone cannot prove that an object will fit. A narrow upper aperture can block a wide suitcase even when the total litres are high. A tall load lip can make a heavy box difficult to slide in. Wheel arches, a sloping backrest and a shallow roof can reduce the usable rectangle.
Key dimensions to check
- Opening width at the narrowest point, not the widest part of the tailgate.
- Opening height from the floor to the lowest obstruction.
- Load-lip height from the ground and from the boot floor.
- Floor length with the second row upright and folded.
- Width between wheel arches.
- Tailgate clearance in your garage or under a low roof.
Mazda’s 2019 European-specification CX-30 press information gives a 1,020 mm opening width, a 731 mm loading-lip height and 430 litres of luggage capacity including the sub-trunk. Mazda described the relatively low lip as making heavy or bulky cargo easier to load. The same material says the values were tentative and can vary by market, so use them as a dated example rather than a current cross-market ranking.
A retractable tape measure is a practical way to check your own bulky items against these dimensions. Measure the item in its carrying orientation, including handles, wheels and protective packaging, then measure the vehicle opening at the dealership. The tape measure suggestion follows from the fact that opening width and lip height can matter as much as published volume; it is not a vehicle-maker endorsement.

Keep model year, market, trim and drivetrain consistent
Names are not specifications. A facelift can alter bumpers and length; a hybrid battery can change boot depth; all-wheel drive can alter clearance; and a regional safety or emissions package can change weight and equipment. Start with the exact vehicle identification: model year, country, body style, engine or motor, drivetrain, trim and wheel size.
Honda UK’s ZR-V and CR-V pages provide dimensions, clearance conditions and boot figures for their listed grades, but the accessed pages do not identify a publication date. Use the live page and the exact grade when quoting those values, and record the date you checked it. Do not attach an invented year to a current specification page.

Chevrolet’s Equinox figures demonstrate the effect of trim within one model year, while Honda’s Passport release demonstrates that a US specification and a UK specification are separate data sets. A comparison is valid only when the market and configuration are aligned.
A step-by-step buying method
- Define your non-negotiables. Write the narrowest gate, garage height, parking length, roughest road, number of occupants and largest item you carry.
- Choose the exact candidates. Record model year, market, trim, drivetrain, engine or motor and wheel size for each SUV.
- Copy the raw specifications. Enter clearance, length, width, height, wheelbase and boot figures with units and the manufacturer’s wording.
- Tag every measurement condition. Mark clearance as unladen, with driver, curb or full load; mark cargo as seats-up, folded, standard or maximum; note VDA, SAE J1100, window-line or roof-line conventions.
- Check exterior fit. Compare the widest mirror-to-mirror dimension with your route, the body width with door-opening needs, the length with tailgate clearance and the height with roof equipment fitted.
- Check cargo geometry. Measure your largest object and compare it with opening width, opening height, floor length, wheel-arch width and lip height.
- Recheck the physical vehicle. At a dealer, open the tailgate, fold the seats, remove or test the parcel shelf and place a tape measure at the narrowest points. Confirm that the exact trim has the same wheels, battery layout and sub-trunk.
- Make a use-case decision. Select the SUV whose relevant measurement meets your need with margin, not the one that wins a single headline number.
A practical comparison example
Suppose three candidates fit your budget. Candidate A has the highest unladen clearance, Candidate B has the largest seats-up volume and Candidate C has the narrowest body. The correct choice depends on your constraints:
| Your priority | What to compare | Why the headline number can mislead |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy weekly loads | Full-load clearance, seats-up volume, lip height and opening width | An unladen clearance advantage may disappear under payload; a large volume may have a high lip |
| Tight garage | Extended mirror width, body width, length and tailgate height | A published body width may exclude mirrors and a tailgate may need more height than the car |
| Occasional flat-pack furniture | Folded-seat floor length, opening dimensions and wheel-arch width | Maximum litres do not guarantee a long, square loading path |
| Uneven access road | Clearance under the relevant load, wheelbase and approach/departure geometry | No cited specification establishes a universal minimum for a particular road |
Use the table to eliminate vehicles that fail a hard constraint first. Only then use softer preferences such as a little more clearance or extra litres.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Ranking unlike clearance figures
Mistake: placing unladen, driver-load and full-load values in one list. Correction: create separate columns for the condition and compare within one column only.
Mixing litres, cubic feet and standards
Mistake: comparing a VDA seats-up figure with an SAE J1100 maximum figure. Correction: retain the standard and configuration, then compare like with like or state that the figures are not directly equivalent.

Assuming a larger boot volume fits a larger object
Mistake: choosing by litres alone. Correction: measure the item and the opening, load lip, floor and wheel-arch span.
Ignoring mirrors and equipment
Mistake: using body width and bare-vehicle height for a car fitted with roof bars. Correction: use extended mirror width and measure the equipped vehicle at the actual parking location.
Carrying a figure across markets or years
Mistake: applying a US trim figure to a UK vehicle or a previous-generation SUV. Correction: verify the market, model year, grade and drivetrain on the manufacturer’s current specification page.
What to ask during a dealer visit
- Is this the exact trim, drivetrain and wheel size shown in the specification?
- What are the clearance figures unladen and at full load, if both are available?
- Is the boot volume measured to the window or roof, and which standard is used?
- Does the seats-up figure include the sub-trunk or under-floor compartment?
- What are the narrowest opening width, opening height and load-lip height?
- Can you demonstrate the tailgate fully open in a space similar to my garage?
- Can I place my own suitcase, pram, crate or equipment in the boot without removing the parcel shelf?
Ask for the written specification when an answer is verbal. If the salesperson cannot confirm a dimension, mark it as not stated and measure the vehicle rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
How to make the final decision
Start with hard limits: a vehicle that cannot pass your gate, clear your garage or accept your largest regular item is excluded regardless of its ground clearance. Next, match the clearance condition to your normal payload and roads. Then compare boot configurations and loading geometry for the way you actually travel.
Keep a dated copy of each specification sheet. Manufacturer pages can change as equipment and model years change, and a later configurator may show a different wheel or battery combination. Your record should make clear who published each number, for which market and trim, under what condition and on what date.
There is no universally best SUV on these measurements. The sound choice is the one whose verified clearance, exterior envelope and boot opening meet your constraints on a common, clearly labelled basis.
