How to Compare Small-SUV Boot Space and Rear-Seat Room

A litre figure is only the starting point. This guide shows how to match powertrains and measurement methods, check openings and floor dimensions, account for sliding rear benches, and test the people and luggage you actually carry.

The fairest way to compare small-SUV practicality is to match the vehicles’ configurations, establish how each boot was measured, and then test the actual luggage and passengers you carry. A quoted litre figure is useful for narrowing a shortlist, but it cannot tell you whether a pushchair clears the tailgate, whether a suitcase fits between the wheel arches, or whether adults have comfortable knee and foot room.

Use published capacity as a starting point, not a verdict. Record the powertrain, model year, trim, spare-wheel or mobility-kit arrangement, rear-bench position and measurement convention for every figure. Then inspect the opening, floor and seat in person.

What a fair small-SUV comparison includes

Two vehicles can carry different amounts in published specifications even when their exterior dimensions look similar. Battery hardware, hybrid equipment, a spare wheel, a mobility kit, underfloor compartments and a sliding rear bench all change the space available. Before comparing numbers, create a like-for-like setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model year: Confirm that both figures apply to the same generation and current specification. A facelift or powertrain change can alter the boot floor and rear-seat packaging.
  • Powertrain: Compare petrol with petrol, hybrid with hybrid, or clearly label the difference. Renault publishes separate Captur capacities for petrol and E-Tech full-hybrid versions.
  • Trim and equipment: Check whether a panoramic roof, powered tailgate, subwoofer or other option changes the available height or underfloor storage.
  • Wheel and puncture equipment: A full-size spare, space-saver or mobility kit can occupy the compartment beneath the floor. Dacia’s Duster tables distinguish variants and identify a mobility-kit context.
  • Rear-seat position: A sliding bench can produce a large boot number only when rear passengers surrender legroom. Write down the bench position beside every quoted capacity.
  • Measurement method: Note whether the value is VDA/ISO 3832, another convention, under the parcel shelf or to the roof, and whether the rear seats are upright or folded.

If any of these details is missing, mark the figure as configuration-specific rather than treating it as a universal model capacity.

Why boot litres do not tell the whole story

Boot volume is a calculated space, not a guarantee that your possessions will fit. A long, narrow load bay may have a respectable volume but reject a square suitcase because the tailgate opening tapers. Wheel arches can make the narrowest floor width much smaller than the published volume suggests. A high load sill or a low roof under the parcel shelf can also make loading awkward.

Look for four separate pieces of information:

  • Floor length: Measure from the tailgate threshold to the rear seatbacks with the seats upright. Nissan’s Juke specification, for example, gives a maximum luggage length of 757 mm with the rear seats up.
  • Usable width: Measure the narrowest distance between wheel-arch intrusions, not just the widest point near the tailgate.
  • Vertical clearance: Check the height below the parcel shelf and the opening height. A roof-load figure is not interchangeable with the enclosed space available under the cover.
  • Access and floor height: Record the tailgate opening, load sill and whether the folded seats leave a step. These affect everyday loading more than a few extra litres.

Bring the largest item you regularly carry. A suitcase, folded stroller, crate or musical instrument provides a more meaningful pass/fail test than comparing an abstract volume alone.

How manufacturers measure capacity

VDA and ISO 3832 figures

Renault and Dacia describe VDA capacity using standardized blocks measuring 200 × 100 × 50 mm. Each block represents 1 dm³ (one litre), and Renault identifies ISO 3832 as the relevant standard. The method allows repeatable volume comparisons, but it does not describe the shape of the opening or the effort required to load a real object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some specifications use litres and some use dm³. For VDA measurements, the units are numerically equivalent, but do not silently combine a VDA value with a manufacturer’s differently measured litre figure. Label the method in your notes and in any comparison table.

Seats-up, seats-folded and roof-load values

Always identify the seat state. A seats-up figure answers the family-shopping question; a seats-folded figure answers the occasional large-load question. Some manufacturers publish folded-seat capacity to the window line and to the roof as separate values. Those figures describe different loading limits and should never be presented as one number.

Honda UK lists the CR-V Full Hybrid with rear-seat-up VDA capacities of 587 litres and 579 litres in the displayed configurations. Its seats-down information distinguishes loading to the window and loading to the roof. The exact model year is not identified in the displayed specification, so verify the current vehicle’s page before using either number for a purchase decision.

Published examples: read each figure in context

The following examples show why a single “biggest boot” ranking is unreliable. All are manufacturer-published specifications, not a controlled independent measurement of identical vehicles.

Vehicle and publisher Published information What must be checked
Honda CR-V Full Hybrid (Honda UK) Rear-seat-up VDA capacities of 587 litres and 579 litres in the displayed configurations. Folded-seat data separates load to the window from load to the roof. The displayed extract does not identify a publication year or all configuration differences. Confirm model year, trim and the exact configuration.
Renault Captur petrol (Renault UK) 484 litres with the rear bench back and 616 litres with the bench forward. Renault separately gives VDA-equivalent figures of 422 and 536 dm³. Record the bench position. Moving it forward increases luggage space while reducing rear passenger room.
Renault Captur E-Tech full hybrid (Renault UK) 348 litres with the bench back and 480 litres forward; VDA-equivalent figures are 326 and 440 dm³. Do not compare these directly with the petrol Captur without matching the powertrain and measurement convention.
Dacia Duster (Dacia UK) The capacity table separates several powertrains and distinguishes dm³ VDA from litres. Maximum folded-seat capacities also vary between variants. No single Duster row represents every version. Check the chosen engine, equipment and mobility-kit arrangement.
Dacia Bigster (Dacia UK) The specification lists boot capacity by powertrain and distinguishes VDA dm³ from litres. The page also references a boot organizer accessory. Use the row for the exact powertrain and trim; the available extract does not establish one class-wide Bigster figure.
Nissan Juke (Nissan UK) Luggage capacity of 354–422 litres VDA and maximum luggage length of 757 mm with the rear seats up. The range indicates variant dependence. Confirm the exact model year and version before comparing it with another vehicle.
Renault Austral (Renault UK) Up to 27.4 cm of rear knee clearance and a boot range affected by bench position; a relevant configuration note reports 555 dm³ VDA. Austral is a useful illustration of the sliding-bench trade-off, not a universal small-SUV rear-room benchmark.

Account for sliding rear benches

A sliding bench can make one vehicle appear dramatically more capacious than another because the manufacturer may quote the bench in its most forward position. Renault says the Captur bench slides by up to 16 cm and cites up to 22 cm of rear legroom. The published Captur capacities show the trade-off clearly: petrol capacity rises from 484 to 616 litres as the bench moves forward, while E-Tech full-hybrid capacity rises from 348 to 480 litres.

Measure and record at least two positions:

  1. Set the bench for the rear passengers’ normal knee room and measure the boot.
  2. Move it fully forward, measure again, and note how much knee and foot space disappears.
  3. If the bench has a split arrangement, test the position you would actually use when carrying both people and luggage.

Do not quote the maximum boot value without saying where the bench was. A vehicle that wins with the bench forward may be less practical for a family using all seats.

How to compare rear-seat room properly

Set the front seat for a real driver

Rear legroom numbers are meaningful only when the front seat is positioned for its regular occupant. Put the driver’s seat where a typical driver would use it, including a realistic cushion height and backrest angle. Then sit behind it. Setting the front seat unusually far forward can make any rear compartment look generous.

Check more than knee clearance

  • Knee and shin space: Look for clearance when the front seat is in its normal position, not at its most forward setting.
  • Foot space: Check whether feet can slide beneath the front seat and whether the floor rises sharply under the front seatbacks.
  • Head clearance: Sit upright in the outboard and centre positions. Include the effect of a panoramic roof or a high seat cushion.
  • Seat base: A short cushion can leave adults with poor thigh support even when the measured gap is adequate.
  • Backrest angle: Assess whether the bench supports an upright posture or forces passengers to recline.
  • Access: Open the rear door fully, check the step-in height and test fitting a child seat if one is part of your routine.
  • Three-person use: Check shoulder width, belt positions and the shape of the centre seat; knee room alone does not establish whether three adults fit.

Manufacturers do not use one consistent rear-room vocabulary. Renault gives Captur rear legroom and Austral knee clearance, while a returned Hyundai specification excerpt provides first-row legroom but not a complete, directly comparable rear-row measurement set. Avoid declaring a rear-seat winner from mismatched terms.

  1. Prepare the load: Bring the largest suitcase, pushchair, pet crate or equipment case you normally carry. Measure its length, width and height beforehand.
  2. Photograph the starting setup: Record the rear-bench position, parcel shelf position and floor height so later comparisons remain fair.
  3. Check the opening first: Insert the item through the narrowest part of the tailgate, not just over the sill. Note whether you must tilt or rotate it.
  4. Measure the floor: Record usable length, narrowest width between wheel arches and height under the cover. A tape measure makes differences visible when specifications omit them.
  5. Inspect the underfloor: Lift the floor and note the spare wheel, mobility kit, charging equipment, tool storage and any usable compartment.
  6. Test seats-up loading: Load the item with all rear seats occupied in the position your passengers need.
  7. Test the sliding range: If fitted, move the bench forward and repeat the measurement, recording the passenger-space compromise.
  8. Test seats-folded loading: Check whether the folded backrests create a flat surface, a step or a slope. Measure to the window line and roof only if you would safely use those heights.
  9. Seat the occupants: Put the regular driver in front and the actual rear passengers behind. Check knees, feet, head, cushion support, backrest angle and door access.
  10. Record inconvenient details: Note a high sill, heavy tailgate, exposed hinges, awkward seat-release handles or a cover that must be removed and stored.

Build a comparison sheet instead of chasing one winning number

A simple worksheet prevents a large but unusable boot from dominating your decision. Keep manufacturer figures and your own measurements in separate columns.

Category What to record Why it matters
Identity Model year, trim, engine or hybrid system, wheel size Prevents mixing figures from different configurations.
Published boot data Seats-up and folded values, litres or dm³, VDA/ISO 3832 or other method Shows whether numbers are genuinely comparable.
Bench setting Rearward, normal-use or forward position; split-bench arrangement Explains changes in both luggage and passenger room.
Opening Tailgate height and width, sill height, narrowest point Determines whether bulky objects can enter.
Floor Length, narrowest width, height below cover, flatness with seats folded Describes usable shape rather than theoretical volume.
Storage Underfloor compartment, spare wheel or mobility kit, side pockets Shows how much volume is available for everyday items.
Rear passenger fit Knee, foot and head clearance; cushion support; backrest and access Captures comfort that a boot figure cannot express.
Real load Pass/fail with your suitcase, pushchair or other regular item Links the comparison to your actual routine.

Ask the dealer or manufacturer for missing dimensions rather than inferring them from litres. If a value is not published, write “not stated” and rely on your tape-measure check.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing different powertrains

Hybrid batteries and other components can reduce boot depth. Renault’s Captur figures demonstrate this: the E-Tech full-hybrid values are lower than the petrol values in both bench positions. Compare equivalent powertrains or explain why a mixed comparison is being made.

Mixing VDA with an unspecified litre figure

VDA blocks provide a standardized method, while an unspecified litre figure may use a different convention. Keep the method beside the number and avoid adding values from unlike methods into a ranking.

Ignoring the parcel shelf

Some vehicles advertise a roof-loaded maximum that is impossible with the cover in place. Decide whether you normally carry items below the shelf; if so, use that height for the practical comparison.

Using the maximum sliding-bench capacity

A forward bench can consume the knee room needed by adults or child seats. Quote the position and test passengers and luggage together.

Treating manufacturer figures as independent tests

Official specifications are authoritative for what the manufacturer publishes, but they are not controlled measurements of every vehicle in identical conditions. Differences in test method, model year and equipment remain possible.

Declaring a rear-seat winner from incomplete data

Rear-row measurements are not reported consistently across brands. A first-row legroom figure, such as the one shown in the available Hyundai excerpt, cannot substitute for a full rear-seat measurement set. Use an in-person fit check when the published data are incomplete.

Turn the measurements into a decision

Start by eliminating vehicles that fail a non-negotiable requirement: the pushchair does not pass the opening, the dog crate cannot fit, or the rear-facing child seat leaves the front passenger without safe space. Among the survivors, rank the attributes in the order your household uses them.

  1. Define the normal load: List the people and objects carried on an ordinary week, not an occasional holiday maximum.
  2. Set a passenger minimum: Decide the minimum knee, head and cushion support acceptable for the tallest regular rear passenger.
  3. Set a luggage minimum: Use your measured item and the seats-up configuration as the baseline.
  4. Use the sliding range as flexibility: Treat extra forward travel as reserve capacity, not as the everyday boot figure if it compromises passengers.
  5. Check the odd occasions: Confirm that folded seats, a flat load floor and roof clearance cover your infrequent bulky loads.
  6. Prefer verified fit over a small numerical advantage: A vehicle with fewer quoted litres can be the better choice if its opening and floor accept your equipment without rearranging the cabin.

For accessories, an organizer can stop small items from rolling around; Dacia’s Bigster specification page references a boot organizer. It cannot create more opening width, floor length or rear-seat legroom, so treat it as an organization aid rather than a capacity solution.

Questions to resolve before signing an order

  • Which exact model year and powertrain produced the quoted boot figure?
  • Is the number VDA/ISO 3832, another method, under the parcel shelf or to the roof?
  • Where was the sliding bench positioned?
  • Does the vehicle have a spare wheel, mobility kit or equipment below the floor?
  • What are the tailgate opening, narrowest width and floor length?
  • Can the actual rear passengers sit comfortably with the front seats set for their regular occupants?
  • Does the real suitcase, pushchair or crate fit without removing the parcel shelf or folding a seat?

Answer those questions in the same configuration for every candidate. The result will be a practical comparison of usable boot space and rear-seat room, rather than a league table built from incompatible litres.
