Compare luxury electric sedans by the miles they deliver on the same route and the miles they add during a fixed charging stop—not by a single advertised range or peak-kilowatt figure. Hold speed, weather, state-of-charge window, wheels, tires, occupants and tire pressure constant; report efficiency alongside distance; and measure charging at 10-, 15-, 20- and 30-minute marks. That method reveals why a sedan with a lower laboratory rating can be easier to use on a real trip.

The examples below show the scale of the differences. In MotorTrend’s approximately 2024 70-mph road-trip test, a Lucid Air Sapphire traveled 331 miles while using 95% of its charge, versus 270 miles for a Tesla Model S Plaid on 21-inch wheels. After 15 minutes of fast charging, the Lucid had added 159 miles and the Model S 139; after 30 minutes, the results were 252 and 216 miles. Yet MotorTrend reported that the Tesla’s denser, more reliable Supercharger network could make the Model S the quicker choice over several stops.

What “real-world range” should mean

Real-world range is the distance a particular car travels under a stated operating protocol. It is not a replacement for an EPA or WLTP rating, and it cannot be compared fairly when the test conditions differ. A useful result names the route, speed, start and end battery percentages, weather, wheel and tire specification, occupants, cargo and climate-control use.

Use one repeatable highway protocol

A 70-mph highway run is practical because it is fast enough to expose aerodynamic losses while remaining repeatable. Start each sedan at the same state of charge, finish at the same reserve, and drive the same loop in both directions when possible so wind and elevation partly cancel. Record outside temperature, precipitation, traffic, average speed, tire pressures and the wheel size fitted to the test car.

Report both total miles and energy efficiency. A car that covers 300 miles by carrying a very large battery is not necessarily more efficient than one that covers 290 miles with less energy. Express consumption as miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) or kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers (kWh/100 km). To convert an ADAC-style result, divide 62.137 by the kWh/100 km figure; the result is an approximate mi/kWh value.

Keep the battery window explicit

“Range” can mean a full-charge estimate, the distance between two charging stops, or the miles obtained from a defined percentage window. State whether the test used 100% to 0%, 100% to 5%, or another window. MotorTrend’s Lucid result used 95% of a full charge, so its 331 miles should not be presented as a complete 0%-to-0% capability.

How to separate EPA, WLTP and independent measurements

Put standardized ratings in their own labeled columns and never merge them into an independent highway result. EPA and WLTP procedures differ in speed profile, temperature assumptions, accessory use and correction factors. ADAC’s Ecotest is another protocol, with its own route and energy accounting. These figures are useful baselines, not interchangeable rankings.

Figure type What it tells you What it cannot tell you by itself
EPA range A US regulatory estimate produced under a standardized test and adjustment method. How far the car will travel at a steady 70 mph in a specific weather window.
WLTP range A European type-approval estimate using a different cycle and assumptions. How the same vehicle compares directly with an EPA number.
Independent highway test Observed distance under a named route, speed, battery window and configuration. Every owner’s result in different weather, traffic, tires or terrain.
ADAC Ecotest efficiency Energy consumed under ADAC’s published test procedure, useful for comparing tested cars within that protocol. A worldwide ranking or a guarantee of a particular highway range.

What the highway comparison demonstrates

MotorTrend listed a 427-mile official range for the Lucid Air Sapphire and measured 331 miles in its 70-mph road-trip metric. The Tesla Model S Plaid’s 21-inch-wheel configuration had a 348-mile EPA basis and delivered 270 miles in the same reality check. The gap illustrates why the wheel package, speed and test window must accompany every number.

Measure efficiency, not just battery size

Usable range is approximately usable battery energy multiplied by efficiency. Battery capacity alone therefore cannot predict the winner. Drag rises rapidly with speed; cold air, cabin heating, wet pavement, hills, headwinds, roof loads and low tire pressure all increase consumption. Larger wheels and performance tires can also raise rolling resistance.

Independent efficiency results

Model and configuration Test organization and year Measured consumption Approximate mi/kWh*
Porsche Taycan 4S Performance Battery Plus ADAC Ecotest, 2024 19.7 kWh/100 km 3.15
Lucid Air Grand Touring AWD ADAC Ecotest, 2024 20.4 kWh/100 km 3.05
Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ ADAC Ecotest, 2022 21.5 kWh/100 km 2.89
BMW i7 xDrive60 ADAC Ecotest, 2023 22.0 kWh/100 km 2.82

*Calculated as 62.137 divided by the reported kWh/100 km; rounding is for readability. These are results from different model years and ADAC test dates, so they should not be treated as a single current-model ranking.

The spread from 19.7 to 22.0 kWh/100 km is about 12% in this group. At a fixed battery size, that difference becomes additional miles between stops. Conversely, a sedan with a larger pack may offset higher consumption but add weight and charging energy. Record the battery option and drivetrain so a rear-drive, smaller-wheel car is not compared with an all-wheel-drive, performance-wheel version as though they were identical.

How to test charging speed in a way drivers can use

Charging speed is the useful energy or miles added during a stop. Peak DC power is only the highest instantaneous point on a charging curve; it may last briefly before the vehicle tapers power as the battery fills or warms. A fair test records the curve and the result at fixed time intervals.

Charging test procedure

  1. Prepare the car. Arrive with the same starting state of charge, normally low enough to permit high power, and note battery and ambient temperature. Use the manufacturer’s battery-preconditioning procedure when the route or navigation system supports it, and record whether preconditioning was active.
  2. Identify the equipment. Record the station’s advertised maximum power, connector type, dispenser sharing, software version if visible, and whether the stall is operating normally. A 350-kW label does not mean every car can draw 350 kW.
  3. Start the timer at a defined event. Use the moment the connector is latched and power begins, or another rule applied identically to every car. Log battery percentage and charger power at one-minute intervals when possible.
  4. Capture fixed checkpoints. Write down miles or kWh added after 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes, plus the time from 10% to 80% if that window is practical. Also note the ending battery percentage and any interruption.
  5. Repeat or disclose anomalies. Queueing, payment failure, a derated cabinet, a cold-soaked pack or a shared dispenser can dominate a trip. Repeat the run or label the event rather than presenting an abnormal session as the car’s normal capability.

MotorTrend’s useful-mile comparison

Vehicle 15 minutes added 30 minutes added Context
Lucid Air Sapphire 159 miles 252 miles MotorTrend, approximately 2024 charging result
Tesla Model S Plaid 139 miles 216 miles MotorTrend, approximately 2024 charging result

These values are more actionable than a peak-kW headline: a driver can estimate how far a 15-minute stop moves the next charger. They still depend on the test’s starting state, temperature, charger and route assumptions, so do not treat them as a universal promise.

Manufacturer charging specifications: a worked example

BMW’s current i7 technical data list a 195–240 kW maximum DC rate depending on variant, approximately 29–34 minutes for 10–80% DC charging, 11.5 kW maximum AC input and approximately 10–11 hours for a 0–100% AC charge. The range of values reflects variant differences; identify the exact drivetrain and battery when quoting them.

BMW states: “Estimated ranges attainable when battery fully charged & under ideal driving conditions. Actual range will vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to: vehicle model, tire & wheel selections, driving style, accessories used, traffic conditions, outside temperatures, & charging frequency.” That qualification applies to both range and the conditions under which charging and consumption figures are obtained.

Why peak power is not the whole story

  • A car may briefly reach its advertised peak only at a low battery percentage and an ideal battery temperature.
  • The curve can taper sharply above 50–60%, making a planned 10–60% stop faster than a 10–80% stop.
  • Two vehicles with the same peak may deliver different kWh in 15 minutes because one holds high power longer.
  • Station sharing, cabinet limits and thermal derating can reduce the power available to either vehicle.

Include the charging network and route, not just the car

A road trip is a sequence of charging events. Station uptime, queueing, connector availability, payment steps and route density can outweigh a specification-sheet advantage. MotorTrend specifically reported that the Tesla network’s greater density and reliability could make the Model S the faster overall road-trip choice despite the Lucid’s stronger measured charging result.

Network variables to log

  • Density: distance to the next compatible high-power site and the number of alternatives if it is full.
  • Reliability: whether stalls are operating, blocked or limited to reduced power at the time of arrival.
  • Queueing: waiting time is part of trip time, even though it does not appear in a vehicle’s charging curve.
  • Connector and access: confirm that the sedan’s connector, adapter and software authorization work at the planned site.
  • Payment friction: account setup, app failures, card readers and roaming arrangements can add minutes.

When comparing cars, calculate total trip time as driving time plus detours, queueing, charging and payment time. A lower-peak-power sedan on a dependable route can arrive before a higher-peak-power sedan that must detour to a working station.

Home charging and daily ownership

Public fast charging matters on long trips, but most daily energy comes from home AC charging. An 11.5-kW-capable sedan can still need roughly 10–11 hours for a full charge, as the i7 figures illustrate. That is usually compatible with overnight charging if the home circuit and installation are sized correctly.

Checklist for a 48-amp Level 2 installation

  • Verify the vehicle’s maximum AC input and connector standard for your market; a higher-rated wall unit cannot force the car to accept more power.
  • Confirm that the electrical panel, breaker, wiring run and continuous-load calculation support a 48-amp EV circuit. Local code may require permitting, inspection and load management.
  • Place the charger so its cable reaches the charge port without a trip hazard, and protect outdoor equipment from weather as required by its listing.
  • Set the vehicle’s charging limit and departure schedule in its software. A lower daily limit can reduce time spent at a high state of charge while preserving a full charge for a trip.
  • Check whether battery preconditioning is automatic when a fast charger is selected in navigation and whether the function consumes additional energy.

Measure home charging by the energy delivered at the wall or meter, not only the battery percentage shown in the car. AC conversion and standby losses mean wall energy will be higher than the energy stored in the pack.

Configuration, weather and test controls

Publish the exact configuration beside every result. Wheel diameter, tire compound, tread depth, alignment, drivetrain, battery option and software version can all change consumption or charging behavior. A 21-inch performance-wheel sedan should not be used as a proxy for the same model on its smallest wheels.

Variables that commonly change range

  • Speed: aerodynamic drag rises steeply as speed increases; a 70-mph result will usually exceed the consumption of a slower mixed-route test.
  • Temperature: cold batteries accept less power until warmed, and cabin heating adds a large load. Heat can also reduce efficiency through air-conditioning and battery cooling.
  • Wind and terrain: headwinds and climbs consume energy; a round trip is more representative than a one-way downhill route.
  • Accessories and cargo: roof boxes, bike racks, extra passengers and aggressive climate settings increase demand.
  • Tires and pressure: verify pressures cold, use the same tire model where possible, and record deviations.

If a result is intended for buyers in a different market, label that limitation. The evidence here combines US EPA-oriented specifications, European ADAC tests and an independent US highway comparison; those protocols and climates are not a worldwide 2026 ranking.

A practical comparison worksheet

Use one row per vehicle and one sheet per test day. The following fields prevent an attractive but incomplete comparison:

Category Fields to record
Vehicle Model year, trim, drivetrain, battery option, software version, wheel and tire size, odometer and payload.
Standard ratings EPA range, WLTP range where applicable, and the market and source date for each.
Highway run Route, direction, target and average speed, start/end state of charge, weather, wind, temperature, tire pressure, climate setting, total miles and mi/kWh.
DC session Station, connector, starting percentage, battery temperature or preconditioning status, power by minute, miles/kWh added at 10/15/20/30 minutes, 10–80% time and interruptions.
Trip practicality Detour, queue, payment time, working stalls, alternative sites and total elapsed time.
Home use AC amperage and kW, circuit capacity, wall-to-battery energy, scheduled departure and overnight duration.

How to turn measurements into a buying decision

Choose the relevant range metric

If your routine is mostly high-speed motorway travel, weight the controlled highway miles and efficiency more heavily than the official rating. If you drive mixed urban routes, use a representative mixed-route test, but do not combine it numerically with a 70-mph result. Keep the battery reserve you actually plan to maintain; a driver who avoids going below 10% has less usable distance than a test that runs to a near-empty display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the relevant charging metric

For frequent long trips, compare miles added in 15 minutes, the 10–80% time and the charging network along your routes. For home-centered use, compare AC power, scheduled charging controls and the time available overnight. A 240-kW peak is less valuable if your regular route has 150-kW sites that are reliable and conveniently spaced.

Check uncertainty before declaring a winner

Ask whether the compared vehicles were tested in the same season, on the same wheels, at the same speed and with the same battery window. If not, present separate observations rather than a false ranking. Repeat an unexpected result, disclose the anomaly and preserve the raw time and percentage readings so another reader can see how the conclusion was reached.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Mixing EPA, WLTP and ADAC numbers in one leaderboard: keep each protocol labeled and discuss differences qualitatively unless the cars were tested under the same method.
  • Quoting peak kW as charging speed: publish fixed-minute miles or kWh and the curve, not just the maximum.
  • Ignoring wheel size: identify the tested wheels and avoid applying that result to every trim.
  • Using a one-way route: run an out-and-back or correct for elevation and wind.
  • Counting only plug-in time: include detours, queues, payment and connector problems in trip planning.
  • Hiding the battery window: state the start and end percentages and whether the displayed range was an estimate or measured distance.
  • Treating one test as universal: explain the date, geography, weather and protocol, especially when comparing US and European evidence.

The most defensible luxury-sedan comparison is therefore a small data set: a controlled highway result, efficiency, fixed-interval DC charging, home AC requirements and the network conditions that determine whether those numbers are usable. That combination answers how far the car goes, how quickly it recovers miles and how much uncertainty a buyer should expect.
