The broad bumper-to-bumper warranty covers more systems but usually expires sooner; powertrain coverage is narrower and may last longer; corrosion coverage applies only to the rust damage and body panels defined in the booklet. Every limit matters because coverage normally ends at whichever comes first—the stated months or the mileage.
What a new-car warranty actually is
A manufacturer’s warranty is included in the price of a new vehicle. It promises to repair or replace specified defective parts during a stated period, subject to the booklet’s exclusions, procedures, and mileage limit. The Federal Trade Commission describes the usual rule this way: coverage lasts for a certain number of months or miles, “whichever comes first.” That means a driver who reaches the mileage cap early can lose coverage before the calendar period ends, while a low-mileage vehicle can age out by time.

The warranty is not a promise to pay for every repair. It is a contract defining which components, failures, causes, and repair methods qualify. Routine maintenance, normal wear, accident damage, and excluded modifications commonly fall outside the basic promise. The exact wording in the booklet for your vehicle, model year, engine, drivetrain, and market controls a claim.

| Coverage | What it generally addresses | Typical breadth | Illustrative term from published examples | What to verify in your booklet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic or “bumper-to-bumper” | Many vehicle systems and components, potentially from body systems through electrical equipment | Broadest factory coverage, but still subject to exclusions and wear-item limits | Mopar current-model example: 3 years/36,000 miles; an FTC industry presentation also uses 3 years/36,000 miles as an example | Every exclusion, wear item, adjustment, noise or appearance limitation, deductible, and claim procedure |
| Powertrain | Major propulsion components such as the engine, transmission, and drive-system parts identified by the manufacturer | Narrower list of parts; often a longer term than basic coverage | FTC industry-presentation example: 5 years/72,000 miles | Covered assemblies, seals and gaskets, internal parts, towing or consequential-damage rules, and the mileage/time end point |
| Corrosion or rust-through | Rust damage meeting the manufacturer’s definition, often perforation of specified sheet metal | Limited by the kind of rust, affected panel, and cause | Term and panel coverage vary by manufacturer and vehicle; no universal period applies | Surface rust versus perforation, panel-by-panel limits, exclusions for accidents, chemicals, modifications, and aftermarket treatments |
The figures in the table are examples, not an industry standard. A different brand, model, body style, region, or model year can use different terms and definitions.

How bumper-to-bumper (basic) coverage works
“Bumper-to-bumper” is an informal name for a broad basic limited warranty. Mopar’s current-model description characterizes its 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty as coverage “from the body to the electrical system.” That phrase communicates breadth, not unlimited protection: the warranty still pays only for the parts and failures listed in its terms.
What may be included
- Electrical and electronic components named in the booklet.
- Body hardware and other non-powertrain systems that fail because of a manufacturing defect.
- Systems such as climate control, steering, suspension, safety equipment, infotainment, and fuel or emissions components when the manufacturer lists them and the failure qualifies.
Those categories are examples of the kind of system a basic warranty can address, not a promise that every component in each category is covered. Use the component index and exclusions section to identify the exact part.
Why the name is misleading
Wear items and maintenance parts are normally treated differently from defective components. Tires, brake friction material, wiper blades, bulbs, filters, fluids, and other consumables may be excluded or covered only for a short adjustment period. Cosmetic damage, road hazards, collision damage, environmental damage, unauthorized modifications, and neglect can also defeat a claim. A failed part can therefore sit physically between the bumpers yet remain outside the warranty.

Questions to ask about a basic claim
- Is the failed item specifically listed as covered?
- Does the exclusion section classify it as maintenance, wear, adjustment, appearance, or noise?
- Did an accident, outside product, modification, misuse, or missed maintenance cause or contribute to the failure?
- Does the warranty require diagnosis or repair through an authorized dealer?
How powertrain coverage differs
Powertrain coverage concentrates on the components that create and deliver propulsion. Mopar identifies the engine, transmission, and drive-system components as powertrain items. The list can be narrower than a reader expects: a complete engine assembly may be included while accessories, sensors, wiring, mounts, cooling components, or a clutch are governed by separate language or excluded altogether.
Powertrain coverage often lasts longer than basic coverage. The FTC’s automotive-industry presentation uses 5 years/72,000 miles for powertrain and 3 years/36,000 miles for bumper-to-bumper as examples. These numbers illustrate the common pattern, not a universal package. Check whether the longer term applies to the entire powertrain list or only particular assemblies, and whether the limit changes for commercial use, fleet registration, emissions equipment, or second owners.
Read the component list, not just the label
Open the powertrain section and mark each assembly and subcomponent. Look for separate treatment of internal parts, seals, gaskets, lubricants, turbochargers, hybrid or electric-drive components, axles, transfer cases, differentials, and driveshafts. A claim can be denied when the failed part is adjacent to a covered assembly but not included in the defined list.

Powertrain does not mean “better”
Powertrain is better only if the risk you are insuring is a major propulsion failure and the longer term matters to your driving pattern. It is not broader than bumper-to-bumper. A vehicle can have powertrain coverage remaining while an electrical, suspension, climate-control, or infotainment failure is outside every factory warranty. Compare the part list and term rather than ranking one label above another.

Rust language is especially easy to misread. A corrosion warranty may distinguish cosmetic surface rust from rust-through, also called perforation, in which rust creates a hole through sheet metal. It may cover only specified exterior panels, only defects caused by manufacturing or materials, or only perforation from the inside out. Scratches, stone chips, collision repairs, salt exposure, chemical contamination, and neglected paint damage can be excluded.
Surface rust versus perforation
| Condition | Why the distinction matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Surface or cosmetic rust | May affect appearance without perforating the panel and may not meet the warranty’s corrosion definition | Whether cosmetic oxidation is expressly covered, excluded, or subject to a short adjustment period |
| Rust-through/perforation | Often the event that triggers limited corrosion coverage | Required hole size or proof of perforation, inside-out language, covered panels, and time or mileage term |
| Rust caused by damage or an outside product | The manufacturer may treat the cause as excluded rather than a factory defect | Accident, stone-chip, aftermarket coating, chemical, and repair-history exclusions |
Chevrolet warns that aftermarket rustproofing products can reduce the corrosion resistance built into the vehicle and that repairs caused by those products are not covered under its new-vehicle limited warranty. Before applying a coating, obtain the manufacturer’s written position and keep the product and installation records.
How to interpret a term such as 5 years/60,000 miles
A “5-year/60,000-mile” warranty is a two-part ceiling, not five years plus an extra 60,000 miles. Coverage ends at the first limit reached. If a vehicle is driven 15,000 miles a year, it reaches 60,000 miles at about four years; if it travels 8,000 miles a year, the five-year date arrives first. The odometer and the in-service date both matter.
Confirm which date starts the clock. Many booklets use the original retail delivery or in-service date, not the date a later owner buys the vehicle. A demonstrator, loaner, fleet vehicle, or previously registered vehicle can therefore have less remaining coverage than its sale date suggests. Ask the dealer to print the warranty start date and current mileage before you sign.

1. Collect the official documents
Obtain the warranty booklet for the specific vehicle, not a generic sales handout. FTC guidance says warranty details should be available in writing. Save the booklet, window sticker, purchase order, and any warranty amendments. If a salesperson makes a promise that is absent from the booklet, request the promise in writing before purchase.
2. Separate each coverage section
Create separate rows for basic, powertrain, corrosion, emissions, restraint-system, battery, and roadside or adjustment coverage when those appear. Do not combine a long powertrain term with a short basic term into one headline number.
3. Map covered components
Copy the component lists into your worksheet. Note assemblies, subcomponents, seals, gaskets, software, batteries, and labor rules. Mark items described as “limited,” “adjustment,” “maintenance,” or “wear.” If a part is not clearly included, record it as unconfirmed and ask the manufacturer or dealer for a written interpretation.
4. Record both clocks
Write the months, years, and miles for every section, then calculate the likely end point for your annual mileage. A driver covering 25,000 miles a year should weigh a mileage cap far more heavily than a driver covering 6,000 miles. Include separate terms for original and subsequent owners if the booklet changes them.
5. Build an exclusions and wear-item list
Highlight maintenance services, fluids, filters, brake pads and shoes, clutch material, wiper blades, tires, cosmetic defects, noises, vibration, alignment, glass, paint, and damage from accidents or environmental conditions. The exact list differs by manufacturer; the purpose is to identify expenses you would otherwise mistake for warranty repairs.
6. Decode corrosion language
Write down the definition of corrosion, the covered panels, inside-out or outside-in requirement, evidence needed, and any separate term. Photograph existing chips, scratches, and rust before delivery so a later dispute is not reduced to conflicting descriptions of pre-existing damage.

7. Check claim mechanics
Find the deductible, authorized repair location, prior-approval rule, diagnostic-charge rule, towing benefit, parts policy, and escalation route. Some warranties require the dealer to obtain authorization before disassembly or replacing an expensive assembly. Ask who pays if a claim is denied after diagnosis.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
8. Verify transfer and maintenance rules
Determine whether the warranty transfers automatically, requires a fee or form, or loses coverage when the vehicle changes ownership. Keep dated receipts, work orders, parts information, and mileage. FTC guidance recommends retaining the warranty and purchase receipt; maintenance documentation is equally useful when a manufacturer asks whether required service was performed.
Maintenance records and the warranty claim process
Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual and retain proof. Records should show the vehicle identification number when possible, service date, mileage, work performed, and parts or fluids used. If you perform maintenance yourself, keep receipts and a log. Missing a dealer visit does not automatically answer every warranty question, but an undocumented service history makes it harder to establish that the vehicle was maintained as required.
- Stop driving if continuing could worsen the defect or create a safety hazard.
- Contact an authorized repair facility and describe the symptom, warning lights, mileage, and maintenance history accurately.
- Ask the facility to diagnose the cause and confirm whether authorization is required before disassembly.
- Provide the warranty booklet, purchase or transfer documents, and maintenance records.
- Request a written explanation if the claim is denied, including the exact exclusion or causal finding.
- Use the manufacturer’s escalation or dispute process described in the booklet before authorizing non-warranty work.
Do not assume that paying for a repair first guarantees reimbursement. Get authorization and understand diagnostic, towing, rental-car, and parts rules before approving work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate a dealer’s “extended warranty”
An extended warranty is usually an optional auto service contract, not an extension of the manufacturer’s original warranty. It is a separate product with its own administrator, eligibility rules, exclusions, deductible, repair network, cancellation terms, and start date. The FTC advises comparing a service contract with the manufacturer’s warranty before buying it.
Check for overlap
Identify the day the contract begins. If it starts on the purchase date while the factory warranty is still active, you may pay for duplicate protection. Ask whether the contract is exclusionary (everything covered except listed exclusions) or named-component (only listed parts covered), and compare its list with the remaining basic and powertrain terms.

Check restrictions that change the value
- Eligibility limits based on age, mileage, prior use, salvage history, or commercial operation.
- Deductible per visit, per repair, or per covered component.
- Administrator approval before diagnosis, teardown, or parts replacement.
- Repair-network limits, reimbursement caps, used or remanufactured parts, and labor-rate limits.
- Exclusions for routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire replacement; CFPB specifically warns that service contracts can omit these items.
- Cancellation, transfer, refund, and financing rules, including whether the contract cost is added to the vehicle loan.
Ask for the complete contract, not a brochure. Compare the total price with the years and miles of remaining factory coverage, your expected ownership period, and the repairs you can afford to self-insure. A contract that duplicates the factory warranty or excludes the failures you are most concerned about may add little value.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Treating “bumper-to-bumper” as all-inclusive | Wear items, maintenance, and listed exclusions can remove a part from coverage | Read the exclusions and wear-item sections alongside the component list |
| Comparing only years | A high-mileage driver may reach the mileage cap first | Calculate both end dates using your expected annual mileage |
| Assuming powertrain covers every expensive repair | Accessories and adjacent systems may not be defined as powertrain | Mark each assembly and subcomponent in the powertrain list |
| Assuming any rust is covered | Cosmetic surface rust and rust-through can have different rules | Confirm the perforation definition and panel limits |
| Applying aftermarket rustproofing without checking | The product can reduce factory corrosion resistance and create an exclusion | Obtain written approval and retain installation details |
| Buying an extended contract at the finance desk without reading it | The contract may overlap factory coverage or impose eligibility and authorization limits | Take the full contract, compare it line by line, and check cancellation terms |
| Discarding records | Missing receipts make maintenance and ownership history harder to prove | Keep the booklet, purchase documents, service invoices, and mileage log together |
Decision framework for buyers
Choose the warranty with the clearest component list
When two vehicles have similar headline terms, prefer the booklet that clearly identifies covered assemblies, exclusions, claim procedures, and corrosion limits. Ambiguous marketing language is not a substitute for a written obligation.
Match the mileage cap to your use
Commuters, rideshare drivers, and long-distance travelers should focus on mileage because they may exhaust the limit early. Occasional drivers should examine the calendar term, in-service date, and transfer rules.
Value corrosion coverage by climate and body condition
Drivers in areas with road salt or persistent moisture should scrutinize panel definitions, perforation requirements, and documentation of chips or repairs. The coverage is useful only when the observed rust matches the contractual definition.
Consider a service contract only after removing overlap
First determine what factory coverage remains. Then compare the service contract’s start date, covered parts, exclusions, deductible, administrator, network, and cancellation terms. Treat the contract as a separate purchase, not as a free continuation of the new-car warranty.
Sources and official guidance
The Federal Trade Commission’s Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts guidance explains that a manufacturer warranty is included in a new vehicle’s price, normally ends at the first of its time or mileage limits, and should be compared with any service contract. FTC guidance also recommends checking length, coverage, exclusions, repair obligations, and retaining the warranty and receipt.
Manufacturer wording controls the actual claim. Mopar’s current-model example illustrates 3 years/36,000 miles of basic coverage and identifies engine, transmission, and drive-system components as powertrain items. Chevrolet’s warranty guidance illustrates why aftermarket rustproofing and corrosion definitions require careful reading. The FTC automotive-industry presentation’s 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 5-year/72,000-mile powertrain figures are examples for comparison, not guarantees for every vehicle. CFPB guidance notes that service contracts can restrict eligibility, exclude routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire replacement, and overlap manufacturer coverage.
