The right choice depends on the exact model and trim, your annual mileage and journeys, fuel and electricity prices, charging access, tax, finance, servicing, insurance and resale. Compare matched cars over the same ownership period, then test the result against realistic petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and EV usage scenarios.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
Running-cost comparisons go wrong when the cars are not genuinely comparable. A larger SUV with bigger wheels, more equipment and a higher purchase price can erase an apparent energy saving before you have driven a mile.

Match the vehicle first
- Use the same Kia model wherever petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric versions are available.
- Match trim level, battery or engine output, gearbox, wheel and tyre specification and standard equipment as closely as possible.
- Compare new with new or used with used. Do not compare a discounted new car with an older used example without recording the difference.
- Use the same cash or finance assumptions, deposit, term, interest rate and final payment.
Confirm the exact variant in Kia’s current specification and pricing information. Consumption, emissions, equipment, list price and warranty terms can differ within one model range.

Choose an ownership period, such as three, five or eight years, and enter the miles you genuinely expect to drive each year. Show both annual cost and the total for the whole period. A powertrain that saves little at 6,000 miles a year may save substantially at 20,000 miles, while a high purchase premium may never recover over a short ownership period.

Record your journey pattern
Split your mileage into urban, mixed-road and motorway driving if you can. Also note typical trip length, cold starts, traffic, hills, towing, passengers and seasonal use. Kia says real-world efficiency and range vary with driving style, speed, weather, terrain and electrical loads, so a single laboratory figure cannot predict every driver’s result.
Collect the inputs that determine cost
| Input | What to record | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Exact model, trim, engine or motor, battery, gearbox and wheel size | Efficiency, tax, insurance and purchase price can change between variants. |
| Use | Annual miles, ownership years and urban/motorway split | More miles magnify energy-price differences; different roads alter consumption. |
| Petrol or diesel | Realistic mpg and the current pump price you expect to pay | Official figures and your local fuel price determine pence per mile. |
| EV charging | kWh per 100 miles (or the vehicle’s equivalent), home tariff, public tariff and charging shares | Public charging can cost more than home charging, and the mix differs by household. |
| PHEV behaviour | Electric miles as a percentage of total miles and how often you will plug in | A PHEV driven mostly without charging behaves financially more like a petrol car. |
| Ownership costs | Purchase or finance cost, servicing, maintenance, VED, insurance and depreciation | Energy is only one part of total cost of ownership. |
| Resale | An evidence-based value or a clearly labelled range at the end of the period | Resale uncertainty can outweigh small fuel or electricity differences. |
Calculate energy cost for each powertrain
Petrol and diesel
Use expected real-world miles per gallon, not a best-case claim. Convert the result into cost per mile with:
cost per mile = fuel price per litre × litres per mile
For an mpg figure, litres per mile are calculated as 4.54609 ÷ mpg ÷ 100 when mpg is expressed as miles per imperial gallon and the result is required per mile. Multiply cost per mile by annual miles for the annual energy bill, then by ownership years for the period total.
Use the petrol or diesel price you can actually access and date the assumption. Fuel prices move, so a result based on one week’s price is a scenario, not a permanent fact. If you expect motorway-heavy driving, use a motorway-weighted consumption assumption rather than an urban test result.
Self-charging hybrid (HEV)
Calculate an HEV from its petrol consumption and fuel price in the same way as a petrol car. Do not subtract a notional charging cost: the battery is charged by the engine and regenerative braking during normal driving. The hybrid advantage is most likely to appear in stop-start urban work, while sustained high-speed driving can narrow the gap.
Use the exact HEV’s consumption data and a realistic adjustment for your roads, weather and load. Keep the adjustment consistent when comparing it with the petrol version.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
A PHEV needs two linked calculations: electricity for the miles driven electrically and petrol for the remaining miles. Make the electric share an explicit scenario input rather than assuming the official combined figure.

annual PHEV energy cost = (electric miles × EV cost per mile) + (petrol miles × petrol cost per mile)
Create at least two scenarios:
- Regular charging: you can plug in at home or work frequently and most short trips are electric.
- Infrequent charging: you often leave with a depleted battery, so a much larger share of miles uses petrol.
State the assumed electric percentage beside every result. Kia’s calculator includes PHEV as an option, but it cannot know how consistently you will charge in future. A PHEV comparison based only on regular charging is misleading if your routine does not support it.
Battery-electric vehicle (EV)
Use the exact vehicle’s electricity consumption, normally expressed as kWh per 100 miles or a comparable efficiency unit:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →cost per mile = (kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100) × electricity price per kWh
Calculate home and public charging separately, then weight them by the share of energy obtained from each source:
blended electricity price = (home share × home tariff) + (public share × public tariff)
Apply that blended price to the vehicle’s consumption. Include charging losses if your tariff records electricity drawn from the wall rather than energy delivered to the battery; use one consistent method for every EV scenario.

Use Kia’s calculator as an estimate, not a verdict
Kia’s running-cost calculator is useful for turning your mileage and charging circumstances into an estimate for vehicles in its lineup. Enter the exact model and variant, average mileage, charging location or mix and the relevant energy assumptions. Save the inputs and date so you can rerun the comparison when tariffs or fuel prices change.
The calculator does not replace a total-cost calculation. It may not capture your finance offer, insurance quote, depreciation, optional equipment, parking, home-charge-point installation or unusual use such as towing. Treat its output as the energy-cost component of your decision and verify the exact model before buying.
Add every ownership cost, not just energy
Kia describes total cost of ownership as the initial purchase cost plus ongoing running costs and maintenance. Build a separate line for each item so that a low energy bill does not hide a higher overall cost.
| Cost line | How to include it | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Use the actual on-the-road price for the matched trim, including options and incentives that genuinely apply to you. | Comparing a list price for one car with a temporary discount on another. |
| Finance | Compare total amount payable, deposit, fees, interest and final payment over the same term. | Focusing only on the monthly payment. |
| Fuel or electricity | Use the formulas above and your dated rates. | Using a historic pence-per-mile claim as a current promise. |
| Servicing and maintenance | Obtain a current quote for the exact model, mileage and service interval. | Assuming an EV has no servicing requirement. |
| VED | Apply the registration-date and list-price rules that fit the exact vehicle. | Assuming every EV is tax-exempt. |
| Insurance | Get quotes using the same driver, postcode, annual mileage, excess and cover level. | Using a generic group estimate. |
| Tyres and consumables | Allow for the specified tyre size, replacement frequency, brakes, fluids and wipers. | Ignoring expensive large wheels or high-mileage replacement. |
| Depreciation | Use a cautious resale assumption or range and subtract expected resale proceeds from the ownership cost. | Treating an uncertain future resale value as guaranteed. |
| Home charging | Include a suitable dedicated charge point and installation if you need one, plus any standing-charge or tariff effect that is genuinely additional. | Assuming off-street parking, electrical capacity and installation are available at no cost. |
Apply UK vehicle tax correctly in 2026–27
Do not repeat older claims that electric cars are currently exempt from vehicle tax. GOV.UK’s current guidance for the 2026–27 tax year says: “You need to pay vehicle tax if you have an electric, zero or low emission car, van or motorcycle.” The applicable amount depends on registration date and vehicle details.
Electric cars registered on or after 1 April 2025
- £10 for the first year.
- £200 standard rate from the second year.
- A qualifying EV with a list price above £50,000 can also face the additional rate for five years, beginning with the second year of vehicle tax.
Check the live GOV.UK table for the exact vehicle before publishing a comparison or signing a purchase order. The list-price threshold and registration date must be carried with the calculation.
Petrol, diesel and alternative-fuel cars
Cars registered from 1 April 2017 generally have a £200 standard rate, but first-year rates and additional-rate eligibility vary by emissions, registration date and list price. A diesel or petrol car may therefore have a different first-year bill from its later annual rate.
Allow for servicing, warranty and battery risk
EVs still need servicing
An EV has fewer engine-related components, but it still needs inspections, brakes, tyres, suspension, fluids, software or electrical checks and other scheduled work. Kia has published historical e-Care examples of three-year plans starting at £389 for an EV6 and £329 for a Niro EV, while HEV/PHEV examples were £529–£599 and a Sportage plan started at £550. The surfaced Kia article does not display a publication date, so these are indicative historical examples, not current prices. Obtain a current quote for the exact model and mileage.
Understand the high-voltage battery wording
Kia states that high-voltage lithium-ion batteries in EVs, HEVs and PHEVs are covered for seven years from initial registration or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to local warranty terms and exclusions. Kia states a 70% capacity guarantee for EV and PHEV batteries. It says capacity reduction for HEV and mild-hybrid (MHEV) batteries is not covered. This is not a promise that every degradation issue, diagnostic visit or repair is free; read the warranty conditions for the vehicle and market you are buying.

Calculate the break-even point
If one matched car costs more to buy but is cheaper to operate, divide the additional upfront cost by the annual operating-cost saving:
simple break-even years = additional upfront cost ÷ annual operating-cost saving
Label this as a calculation, not a prediction. It is valid only for the assumptions you entered and omits changes in resale value, finance interest, tariffs, fuel prices, servicing, tax and mileage unless those items are included in the numerator or annual saving. If the annual saving is zero or negative, there is no operating-cost break-even under that scenario.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For finance buyers, use total amount payable rather than list-price difference. For a short lease or planned early sale, compare the actual payments and expected end value instead of applying a long-term break-even calculation.
Build a transparent comparison sheet
A spreadsheet makes assumptions visible and lets you test different futures without changing the vehicle. Use one column per powertrain and one row per cost line.
| Row | Entry or formula |
|---|---|
| Annual miles | Your expected miles, split by journey type if possible |
| Ownership years | Planned holding period |
| Fuel price | Dated petrol or diesel price per litre |
| Fuel consumption | Expected real-world imperial mpg |
| Electric consumption | Exact model’s kWh per 100 miles, adjusted consistently for your use |
| Home electricity | Your tariff per kWh |
| Public electricity | Your expected public tariff per kWh |
| Charging mix | Percentage of EV energy at home and in public |
| PHEV electric share | Percentage of total miles completed electrically |
| Annual energy cost | Annual miles multiplied by the relevant blended cost per mile |
| Annual non-energy cost | VED, insurance, servicing, maintenance and other recurring items |
| Upfront or finance cost | Actual cash price or total amount payable |
| Resale deduction | Conservative expected proceeds or a clearly labelled range |
| Total ownership cost | Upfront/finance cost plus ownership-period running costs minus resale proceeds |
| Cost per mile | Total ownership cost divided by total miles over the period |
Keep the assumptions beside the results. A reader should be able to see whether a conclusion depends on a low public-charging share, an optimistic resale value or unusually high annual mileage.

Mileage
Run a low-, expected- and high-mileage case. Energy savings scale with miles, but fixed costs such as insurance, tax and depreciation do not. If you drive very little, purchase-price and depreciation differences usually deserve more attention than small per-mile changes.

Charging access
Home charging is often convenient, and Kia recommends a dedicated charge point because it is faster than a three-pin plug. Suitable parking, electrical installation, vehicle compatibility, tariff structure and the total installed cost still need checking. If most charging will be public, model that explicitly rather than using a home tariff.

Weather and speed
Cold weather, motorway speed, hills, roof loads, heating and air conditioning can reduce EV range and increase energy use. Apply the same conservative approach to every powertrain: do not reduce only the EV figure while leaving combustion consumption at an ideal laboratory value.
Resale and ownership length
A three-year owner may be more exposed to depreciation and finance than a ten-year owner. Show a resale range where evidence is uncertain and run the total again at the low and high ends. Do not present a forecast as a fact.
Tariff and fuel-price changes
Recalculate when your electricity tariff, public charging plan or fuel price changes. A dated scenario is more honest than a timeless “pence per mile” claim. Kia has illustrated an e-Niro at around 4p per mile versus nearer 11p for a similar diesel, but the page qualifies this as tariff-dependent, gives no clear publication date on the surfaced result and is not an independently verified current benchmark.

Common comparison mistakes and how to fix them
- Using different cars: Match model, trim, tyres, equipment and age before comparing powertrains.
- Mixing test cycles: Compare consumption, emissions and range measured under the same technical procedure. WLTP is a standardised comparison method, not a guarantee of your result.
- Assuming a PHEV is always electric: State the electric-mile percentage and charging frequency in every PHEV scenario.
- Ignoring public charging: Separate home and public electricity prices and weight them by your expected use.
- Leaving out tax: Apply the vehicle’s registration date, list price and current VED rules.
- Assuming an EV has no maintenance: Include the manufacturer’s service schedule, tyres, brakes and inspections.
- Quoting an old tariff or manufacturer illustration as current: Date the figure and label it as an illustration.
- Counting a charger as free: Include installation and electrical work where needed, and confirm that you have suitable off-street parking.
- Comparing monthly finance payments only: Compare total amount payable, deposit, fees, interest and final payment.
- Treating resale as certain: Use an assumption or range and test how it changes the conclusion.
Choose the powertrain that fits your use
Petrol may suit
Petrol is straightforward when annual mileage is modest, journeys are mixed and home charging is unavailable. Its result should still include fuel-price volatility, VED, servicing, insurance and depreciation rather than relying on a single mpg number.
Diesel may suit
Diesel can be worth examining for high annual mileage and regular longer journeys, but compare its actual purchase premium, tax, servicing, insurance and resale alongside fuel consumption. Short-trip urban use can produce a different result from motorway-heavy driving.
HEV may suit
An HEV can be attractive when much of your driving is urban or stop-start and you want electrified assistance without arranging charging. Calculate it as a petrol-fuelled car with its own consumption, service and purchase costs.
PHEV may suit
A PHEV makes financial sense only when your routine supports frequent charging and a substantial electric share. If you cannot plug in regularly, rerun the comparison with a low electric-mile percentage before treating its advertised combined result as relevant.
EV may suit
An EV is easiest to model when you have dependable home or workplace charging, a known tariff and predictable mileage. Include public charging for long trips, current VED, servicing, battery-warranty terms, purchase or finance cost and a cautious resale assumption.
Final checks before ordering
- Write down the exact Kia model, trim, battery or engine, gearbox and wheel size.
- Obtain a cash price or full finance illustration and record every fee.
- Get insurance quotes using your real details and annual mileage.
- Confirm the registration date and calculate VED from the current official table.
- Ask for a current service-plan or scheduled-maintenance quote for your mileage.
- For an EV or PHEV, verify where you will charge, the tariff, installation requirements and public-charging alternatives.
- Run low, expected and high mileage cases, plus realistic PHEV electric-share or EV charging-mix cases.
- Subtract a conservative resale estimate and inspect the break-even period against how long you will actually keep the car.
The strongest decision is the one that remains reasonable when you change the uncertain inputs. If a powertrain wins only under one optimistic tariff, mileage or resale assumption, treat it as a close call and choose on practicality rather than claiming a guaranteed saving.
