The best choice is the SUV that costs less over your ownership period while meeting your space, route and weather needs—not automatically the hybrid. Compare equivalent model years, trims and drivetrains; calculate annual fuel use from your mileage and city/highway mix; keep gasoline mpg separate from plug-in-hybrid MPGe; then test whether fuel savings recover any purchase-price premium.
Start by defining the two vehicles you are actually comparing
“Hybrid SUV” can mean a conventional (non-plug-in) hybrid, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or a mild hybrid. A petrol SUV normally uses an internal-combustion engine without meaningful electric-only driving. These systems have different fuel measurements and operating requirements, so a comparison is only useful when the candidates are clearly identified.

Match the vehicles before comparing numbers
- Class and purpose: Compare compact with compact, midsize with midsize, and three-row with three-row when passenger and cargo needs are similar.
- Model year: Use the same or closely matched years. A redesign can change weight, gearing, software and equipment.
- Trim and drivetrain: Record the exact trim, front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), wheel size where listed, and towing equipment. These details can change fuel economy and price.
- Powertrain type: Label each candidate conventional hybrid, PHEV, mild hybrid or gasoline-only. Do not treat all “hybrids” as interchangeable.
For a U.S. buyer, the Department of Energy (DOE) vehicle listings are a useful starting point, but the exact window sticker and manufacturer specification for the vehicle you can buy should control your final comparison.

Understand mpg, MPGe and electric range
Gasoline mpg (miles per gallon) describes distance traveled using liquid fuel. MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) converts electricity and gasoline into a common energy-equivalent measure. MPGe is not a gasoline fuel-economy figure and should not be placed in the same column as conventional mpg without an explanation.

Conventional hybrid
A conventional hybrid charges its battery through regenerative braking and the engine. You generally do not plug it in. Its city, highway and combined ratings are expressed in mpg, making it directly comparable with a gasoline SUV’s mpg when the test conditions and configurations match.
Plug-in hybrid
A PHEV can travel on grid electricity before using gasoline. Look for three separate figures: electric-only range, combined gasoline-and-electric MPGe, and gasoline mpg after the battery charge is depleted. Your real result depends heavily on how often you charge and how much of the commute fits inside the electric range.
Mild hybrid
A mild-hybrid system assists the engine but normally cannot propel the SUV for a substantial distance on electricity alone. Compare its gasoline mpg with the gasoline vehicle’s mpg; do not assume the operating pattern of a full hybrid or PHEV.
What current model examples show
DOE listings illustrate why model-specific data matter. The figures below are U.S. ratings for the listed configurations, not universal results for every trim or market.
| Vehicle and configuration | Fuel metric | DOE-listed value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid quattro | Combined gas-and-electric MPGe | 58 MPGe | Keep separate from gasoline mpg; it reflects electricity and gasoline operation. |
| 2025 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid quattro | Conventional combined gasoline rating | 26 mpg | Useful for the gasoline-running portion, not a substitute for the 58 MPGe figure. |
| 2025 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid quattro | Electric-only range | 23 miles | Compare with the one-way and round-trip commute; charging frequency determines how often that range is available. |
| 2025 gasoline Audi Q5 quattro | Combined mpg | 25–26 mpg | The range reflects the configurations shown in the DOE result. |
| 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid FWD | Combined mpg | 36 mpg | Compare with the same model year and drivetrain, not an AWD figure. |
| 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid AWD | Combined mpg | 35 mpg | AWD changes the rating by one mpg in this listing. |
| 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid FWD | Combined mpg | 34 mpg | Use the listed configuration; equipment and drivetrain can alter results. |
| 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid AWD | Combined mpg | 34 mpg | The DOE listing shows the same combined rating for FWD and AWD configurations. |
These examples do not establish which SUV is cheaper to own. They show that a PHEV’s MPGe, a gasoline mpg rating and electric range answer different questions.
Measure your commute before looking at fuel savings
Fuel economy only becomes a cost when it is applied to your driving. Record the distance and conditions you actually expect to repeat.

Calculate annual miles
- Measure the complete round-trip distance, including regular detours such as school drop-offs or park-and-ride legs.
- Multiply that distance by the number of commuting days. Add predictable personal trips if the SUV will replace another vehicle for them.
- Separate commuting miles from occasional long trips so you can see whether a PHEV’s electric range helps every day or only occasionally.
The basic calculation is annual miles = miles per day × driving days per year. If your schedule changes seasonally or you work from home part of the week, use separate weekday counts rather than assuming a five-day commute.
Estimate the city/highway split
Write down the share of the route spent in stop-and-go streets, flowing urban arterials and steady highway driving. DOE’s Vehicle Cost Calculator asks for daily distance and highway share because efficiency changes with use. A route that is mostly urban may produce a different hybrid advantage from a high-speed highway commute, even when the brochure’s combined ratings look close.
Account for conditions that change consumption
- Cold weather can reduce efficiency and, for a PHEV, electric range.
- Heavy traffic, steep grades, high speeds and frequent idling change the city/highway mix.
- Roof boxes, trailers, winter tires, large wheels and heavy cargo can increase energy use.
- AWD versions may have a different rating from FWD versions, as the Highlander example demonstrates.
Use the official rating for a consistent first comparison, then apply a conservative sensitivity check for the conditions you regularly encounter.
Use a consistent ownership-cost calculation
Compare both SUVs over the same ownership period. A five-year comparison, for example, should include five years of estimated commuting fuel for each vehicle and the purchase-price difference between the exact trims. Do not compare one vehicle’s monthly payment with another vehicle’s fuel bill.
Inputs to collect
- Drive-away or transaction price for each exact vehicle, including destination charges and any taxes or incentives that genuinely apply to you.
- City and highway mpg, or the appropriate PHEV MPGe and electric-range figures.
- Your local gasoline price and, for a PHEV, the electricity rate and charging losses if you intend to model charging cost.
- Annual miles and highway percentage.
- The number of years you expect to keep the SUV.
The DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator accepts purchase price, gasoline city/highway fuel economy, fuel prices and daily driving inputs. It can estimate fuel expense, total cost of ownership and emissions. Its page warns that vehicle prices and specifications change frequently and that not all data are verified by DOE or the laboratory managing the site. Treat its output as an estimate, then confirm current figures for the precise model year and trim with the manufacturer or dealer.

annual gallons = annual miles ÷ combined mpg
Then:
annual fuel cost = annual gallons × local gasoline price
If you know that most miles are city or highway, calculate both a city-weighted and highway-weighted case rather than relying only on the combined number. Keep the same annual miles and gasoline price for both vehicles so the difference comes from the vehicles, not the assumptions.
Model a PHEV in two operating modes
A PHEV requires two cases:
- Charged commute: Estimate how many daily miles are covered by electricity, up to the usable electric range, and price that electricity using your charging rate.
- Gasoline operation: For miles beyond the electric range or days when you cannot charge, use the vehicle’s gasoline mpg figure.
Do not multiply all miles by 58 MPGe and call that a gasoline bill. MPGe includes electrical energy. A driver who rarely plugs in may experience fuel use closer to the PHEV’s gasoline rating, while a driver with dependable home or workplace charging may use electricity for much of the commute.

Find the fuel-only break-even point
Let the hybrid’s purchase premium be premium, its annual fuel cost be hybrid fuel, and the gasoline SUV’s annual fuel cost be petrol fuel. A simple fuel-only payback estimate is:
payback years = premium ÷ (petrol fuel − hybrid fuel)
This is not a promise of total ownership savings. It excludes financing, insurance, maintenance, taxes, depreciation, charging equipment, incentives and resale unless you add reliable figures for the exact vehicles. If the annual fuel difference is small, the payback period may exceed your planned ownership period; if the difference is negative, fuel savings do not recover the premium under those assumptions.

Use route-specific tools instead of brochure figures alone
The DOE FuelEconomy.gov Trip Calculator can compare specific routes and vehicle models while allowing fuel prices and city/highway assumptions to be changed. Enter the same route for both candidates, then save the assumptions used so the result is auditable.
- Choose the two exact vehicle models and configurations shown by the tool.
- Enter the route you drive, or a representative round trip if your commute varies.
- Set the gasoline price to a realistic local value and adjust the city/highway split to match the route.
- Run the comparison for one trip, then scale it to your annual commuting schedule.
- Repeat with a higher and lower fuel-price assumption to see whether the result changes.
DOE’s June 6, 2022 example reported more than $400 in estimated fuel savings for a 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid instead of a 2022 Ford Explorer on a New York City–Grand Canyon round trip. The example assumed 20% city driving, 80% highway driving and $4.07 per gallon of regular gasoline. It is a historical calculator illustration, not a current commute forecast and not a direct SUV-to-SUV test. Use it to understand the tool, not to predict your savings.
Check whether the SUV fits the commute and household
Fuel cost is only one part of the decision. Eliminate a vehicle that cannot perform the daily job even if its calculated fuel bill is lower.
Passenger and cargo needs
- Count the adults, children and child seats carried on the busiest regular trip.
- Measure the cargo needed for work equipment, groceries, mobility aids, sports gear or a stroller with all seating positions in use.
- For a three-row SUV, check access to the third row and usable cargo space behind it rather than relying on the number of seats alone.
Parking and charging
A conventional hybrid needs no special charging routine. A PHEV’s economics depend on having a practical place to charge: a home outlet or charger, workplace charging, or another dependable option. Confirm that the parking location permits charging, that the cable can reach safely, and that charging fits your departure schedule. If charging is inconvenient, model the vehicle primarily as a gasoline SUV rather than assuming its electric range will be used every day.
Weather and route
Consider winter temperatures, snow, steep grades, flood-prone roads and long high-speed sections. Check the exact drivetrain and tire specification for your conditions. AWD may improve traction confidence but can carry a different fuel rating, while cold weather can reduce both gasoline efficiency and PHEV electric range.

For each finalist, obtain current warranty terms, scheduled-maintenance requirements, insurance quotes and credible reliability or resale data for the same model year and drivetrain. Ask what is covered if the hybrid battery, charging hardware or emissions equipment needs service, and whether local technicians can perform that work. Keep these figures in separate rows in your ownership spreadsheet so an unsupported generalization about “hybrids” does not decide the purchase.
Build a decision worksheet
A simple worksheet makes hidden assumptions visible. Use one row per exact vehicle and one column per decision factor.
| Category | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Model year, trim, FWD/AWD, powertrain type | Prevents mismatched ratings and prices. |
| Use | Daily miles, annual miles, city/highway share, route | Connects the rating to your actual commute. |
| Energy | City mpg, highway mpg, combined mpg; or PHEV MPGe, gasoline mpg and electric range | Keeps unlike measurements from being treated as equal. |
| Price | Current transaction price, incentives that apply, charging equipment cost | Sets the premium the fuel savings must recover. |
| Practical fit | Seats, cargo, parking, charging access, weather and route | Tests whether the SUV can perform the daily job. |
| Ownership evidence | Warranty, maintenance schedule, insurance, reliability and resale data for the exact vehicle | Adds costs and risks that fuel calculations do not establish. |
Mark every figure with its source date and configuration. If a value is unavailable, write “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an estimate disguised as a fact.
Interpret the result without overclaiming
When a hybrid is likely to make financial sense
A conventional hybrid is easier to justify when a comparable gasoline SUV costs only modestly more, your annual mileage is high, and a substantial share of driving is urban or stop-and-go. The conclusion still depends on the actual price premium and fuel prices during your ownership period.
When gasoline may be the better fit
A gasoline SUV can remain sensible when the comparable hybrid premium is large, annual mileage is low, the route is predominantly high-speed highway, or the gasoline vehicle better meets towing, availability or budget requirements. Calculate the payback rather than assuming the lower mpg automatically makes it uneconomic.
When a PHEV deserves separate treatment
A PHEV is a distinct case: dependable charging and a commute that fits much of its electric range can materially change energy cost, while infrequent charging removes much of that advantage. Compare its charging routine, MPGe, gasoline mpg and electric range as separate inputs.
Final verification before you buy
- Confirm the window-sticker ratings and equipment for the exact VIN or order configuration.
- Recheck the transaction price, taxes, fees and incentives in your location.
- Run the DOE calculator with your annual miles, route, city/highway share and local fuel price.
- For a PHEV, verify where and when you will charge and model days when charging is unavailable.
- Test passenger access, cargo loading, parking and visibility on a realistic drive.
- Collect model-specific warranty, maintenance, insurance, reliability and resale information before treating the fuel estimate as a buying decision.
Because DOE notes that prices and specifications change frequently and that not all entries are verified, repeat this check immediately before signing a purchase order.
