How to Compare Gas, Diesel, and EV Costs for Your Daily Commute

A practical method for comparing gasoline, diesel and electric commute costs using the same route, annual miles, vehicle efficiency and local energy rates.

By CarCody Team

The fairest commute-cost comparison is a same-route, same-mileage calculation using current local energy prices and each vehicle’s tested consumption. Divide gasoline or diesel price per gallon by miles per gallon; multiply an EV’s kilowatt-hours per mile by your electricity rate. Then multiply each cost per mile by the same annual commute mileage. Keep purchase price, charger installation, maintenance, taxes and financing in a separate total-ownership analysis.

Start with an apples-to-apples commute

There is no universal winner among gasoline, diesel and electric vehicles. The result changes with local fuel prices, utility tariffs, charging location, route mix, weather, traffic, vehicle efficiency and annual mileage. A fair comparison holds the driving pattern constant and changes only the vehicle and energy inputs.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use the same:

  • One-way commute distance and return route.
  • Commute days per week and working weeks per year.
  • City/highway split, traffic conditions and terrain.
  • Additional trips, if you intend to include them.
  • Currency, distance unit and price basis.

Do not compare a small electric hatchback used mostly in town with a large diesel SUV on a highway-heavy schedule and call the difference a fuel-type effect. Vehicle size and driving conditions can matter as much as the powertrain.

Annual commute miles = one-way miles × 2 × commute days per week × work weeks per year

For example, a 22-mile one-way trip, four days per week, over 48 working weeks produces 8,448 annual miles (22 × 2 × 4 × 48). If you work remotely part of the year, have a rotating schedule or take a different route home, use your actual average rather than a nominal five-day week.

Add errands or weekend travel only when the comparison is intended to cover all driving. Keep a separate line for those miles so you can see how much of the result comes from the commute itself.

Collect the inputs that drive the result

Gasoline and diesel vehicles

Record the vehicle’s combined miles-per-gallon (MPG) rating, or a carefully measured real-world value, and the current price per gallon in the area where you refuel. If your route is unusually highway-heavy or congested, use a city/highway-weighted estimate rather than blindly using a combined label number.

Use gasoline and diesel prices separately. A diesel vehicle’s higher MPG does not automatically overcome a higher diesel price, and a lower diesel price does not guarantee a lower cost per mile.

Battery-electric vehicles

Use electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 mi), then apply the price you actually pay for charging. The relevant price may be a home energy rate, a public-charger tariff, or a weighted blend of both.

Include delivery charges, time-of-use rates and per-session or per-kWh public-charging fees when they materially change the effective rate. If your utility has peak and off-peak prices, match the rate to your charging schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Driving conditions

Keep the route and pattern identical, but adjust consumption assumptions for conditions that affect every vehicle differently. Stop-and-go traffic, winter temperatures, hills, roof loads, tire pressure and high speeds can reduce MPG or increase an EV’s kWh/100 mi. The estimate is only as useful as the assumptions behind it.

The core cost-per-mile formulas

Powertrain Formula Required inputs
Gasoline Local gasoline price per gallon ÷ gasoline MPG Gasoline price and MPG
Diesel Local diesel price per gallon ÷ diesel MPG Diesel price and MPG
Battery EV (EV kWh/100 mi ÷ 100) × electricity price per kWh Electricity consumption and effective charging rate

Then apply the same mileage to each result:

Annual commute energy cost = cost per mile × annual commute miles

Keep units compatible. If you use kilometres and litres, convert all vehicles to those units. The Australian Government’s vehicle comparison calculator expresses the same logic in metric form, with editable assumptions for distance, energy prices and annual travel.

Worked example with illustrative prices

The following numbers demonstrate the method; they are not a national price forecast. Assume 8,448 annual commute miles and these local inputs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Vehicle Efficiency assumption Energy price Cost per mile Annual commute energy cost
Gasoline sedan 32 MPG $3.60/gal $0.1125 $950.40
Diesel sedan 42 MPG $3.90/gal $0.0929 $785.15
Battery EV 29 kWh/100 mi $0.18/kWh $0.0522 $441.03

The gasoline calculation is $3.60 ÷ 32 = $0.1125 per mile. The EV calculation is (29 ÷ 100) × $0.18 = $0.0522 per mile. Multiplying each by 8,448 miles gives the annual figures shown.

Change the local rates or the efficiency and the ordering can change. For instance, an EV charged mainly on an expensive rapid-charging network may cost substantially more per mile than the same EV charged overnight at home. That is why a headline such as “EVs are always cheapest” is not a reliable personal conclusion.

Use official calculators without losing control of the assumptions

DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center Vehicle Cost Calculator

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center calculator can compare up to eight vehicles or let you create a custom vehicle. Its fields include gasoline or diesel MPG, EV kWh/100 miles, purchase price, fuel prices, daily mileage, commute frequency, highway share and a state selection for electricity context.

Enter your own current prices rather than accepting a default. Check the daily distance, commute days, weeks, highway percentage and charging assumptions before reading the result. The calculator’s methodology notes that vehicle efficiency data come from a database licensed from fueleconomy.gov and sourced from Edmunds, while estimates depend on user behavior and charging conditions. DOE also warns that vehicle prices and specifications change and that not every data point has been verified by DOE or the laboratory managing the site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its methodology contains historical defaults. Treat it as a guide to the structure of the calculation, not as a current price sheet.

EPA labels and MPGe

EPA’s electric-vehicle label reports MPGe, kWh/100 miles, estimated annual fuel cost and driving range. MPGe is an energy-content measure that allows different technologies to be compared; it is not a dollar figure. For a personal cost estimate, kWh/100 miles is more direct because, as the EPA explains, “Unlike MPG, consumption relates directly to the amount of electricity used, and thus to expenditures on electricity.” Multiply that consumption by your actual electricity rate.

Label annual-cost examples use printed assumptions. EPA examples commonly show 15,000 miles per year and $0.12 per kWh in the fine print. Those assumptions are not your commute unless your mileage and rate match them. A model-year-specific label also does not replace the efficiency rating of the exact trim, wheels, battery or drivetrain you are considering.

Price home, workplace and public charging correctly

Home charging

Start with the utility’s price per kWh at the time you charge. If the utility bills tiered rates, use the marginal rate that applies to the additional consumption, or calculate an effective blended rate from a representative bill. For time-of-use plans, schedule charging in the off-peak window when practical and use that price in the estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vehicle displays may show battery energy used, while the meter records energy drawn from the wall. Charging losses mean the electricity purchased can exceed the battery’s reported consumption. For a conservative household-cost estimate, use the energy measured by a charger or utility monitor; if you only have the vehicle figure, state that it excludes or approximates charging losses.

Workplace and public charging

Separate miles charged at work, at home and in public. Public networks may bill by kWh, time, session, parking duration or a combination, and rates can vary by location and membership. Convert each source to an effective price per kWh, then calculate a weighted average:

Weighted electricity rate = (home kWh × home rate + workplace kWh × workplace rate + public kWh × public rate) ÷ total kWh

Use the weighted rate in the EV formula. If a public charger has idle fees or a flat session charge, allocate those charges across the kWh delivered during a typical session rather than ignoring them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rapid charging

Rapid charging can be convenient but expensive. Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition displayed an indicative national comparison updated 23 September 2026: gasoline 95 E5 at €9.82 per 100 km, diesel at €8.20 per 100 km, home charging at €3.29 per 100 km and rapid charging at €8.11 per 100 km. These are Spain-specific national estimates based on the ministry’s methodology, not a personal quote and not a U.S. price. They demonstrate why charging location belongs in the calculation.

Account for a plug-in hybrid as two energy streams

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cannot be represented by one simple EV or gasoline number unless you know how it is used. Count electric miles and gasoline miles separately:

  1. Estimate the share of annual miles driven electrically under your charging routine.
  2. Apply the EV formula to those electric miles.
  3. Apply the gasoline formula to the remaining miles using the vehicle’s gasoline-mode MPG.
  4. Add the two annual energy costs.

Charging frequency, commute length, winter conditions and access to workplace charging determine the split. A PHEV driven beyond its electric range every day may have little resemblance to its headline electric estimate.

Separate energy cost from total ownership cost

The formulas above answer “How much energy will my commute use?” They do not answer “Which vehicle is cheapest to own?” Keep those questions in separate sections so a low fuel bill is not mistaken for a low overall cost.

Energy-cost comparison Total-ownership comparison
Fuel or electricity price Purchase price and financing
Vehicle MPG or kWh/100 mi Depreciation and resale value
Annual commute miles Maintenance, tires and repairs
Home, workplace and public charging mix Home charger, electrical work and installation
Route and driving conditions Registration, taxes, insurance and incentives

The DOE calculator methodology explicitly excludes charging-system costs. Add the charger, wiring, panel work and installation as one-time ownership costs if you are evaluating a vehicle purchase. Do not hide those costs inside the EV’s electricity rate unless you clearly state that you are amortizing them over a chosen number of years and miles.

Understand the limits of national and model-year statistics

National averages can provide context but cannot replace local inputs. Electricity rates differ by utility territory, and fuel prices can change weekly. Weather and speed can move real-world efficiency away from a laboratory or label value.

EPA’s comparison page reports 39 kWh per 100 miles as the U.S. model-year 2025 median EV energy consumption, using the national-average electricity carbon-emissions factor from eGRID 2023. That is a model-year median and an emissions-comparison input, not the consumption of every EV and not a substitute for the rating of a specific vehicle.

Likewise, Spain’s published €/100 km figures should not be transferred to another country, and an Australian or New Zealand calculator’s default annual distance and prices are not appropriate for a U.S. household without replacement. New Zealand’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority cautions users: “Before relying on the results generated by the Vehicle Comparison Calculator, you should carefully evaluate the accuracy, completeness, and applicability of the results for you, and you should obtain appropriate expert advice relevant to your particular situation.” The same discipline applies to any calculator.

Test how sensitive the answer is

A useful comparison shows which assumptions matter most. Recalculate under at least three cases:

  • Low-cost case: efficient driving, favorable weather, low home electricity rate or low fuel price.
  • Typical case: your best estimate for route mix, rates and consumption.
  • High-cost case: winter efficiency loss, congestion, higher prices or more public rapid charging.

You can calculate a simple break-even electricity rate between an EV and a gasoline vehicle. First find the gasoline cost per mile. Divide that result by the EV’s kWh per mile. The resulting rate is the electricity price at which both vehicles cost the same for energy. For example, if gasoline costs $0.14 per mile and the EV uses 0.30 kWh per mile, the break-even electricity rate is about $0.47 per kWh. Charging below that rate favors the EV on energy cost; charging above it favors gasoline, before ownership costs.

For diesel versus gasoline, compare the actual per-mile formulas rather than MPG alone. The diesel is cheaper only when its price-per-gallon-to-MPG ratio is lower.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using different distances

Problem: One vehicle is assigned a one-way distance and another a round trip.
Fix: Calculate one annual mileage figure first and apply it to every vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing MPG with MPGe as if they were prices

Problem: MPGe is treated as dollars per mile.
Fix: Use kWh/100 miles multiplied by your electricity rate for the EV, and price-per-gallon divided by MPG for combustion vehicles.

Mixing label assumptions with personal assumptions

Problem: A label’s 15,000-mile, $0.12/kWh example is reported as your annual cost.
Fix: Replace both assumptions with your annual mileage and tariff, and identify the exact vehicle trim.

Ignoring charging losses and fees

Problem: Battery energy is multiplied by the utility rate while public session or idle fees are omitted.
Fix: Use wall-measured energy when available and allocate all recurring charging fees to the delivered kWh.

Assuming every EV mile is a home-charged mile

Problem: A low overnight rate is used even though most travel relies on rapid charging.
Fix: Estimate the home, workplace and public shares and use a weighted rate.

Using an old fuel price

Problem: A calculator’s default or a months-old average is left unchanged.
Fix: Enter current local prices and date-stamp your worksheet. Recheck when rates or your charging routine change.

Turning energy cost into a purchase recommendation

Problem: The lowest annual energy bill is declared the cheapest vehicle overall.
Fix: Add purchase, financing, depreciation, maintenance, insurance, taxes and charging installation in a separate ownership model.

A repeatable worksheet

  1. Write the one-way distance, commute days per week and work weeks per year.
  2. Calculate annual commute miles and list any additional miles separately.
  3. Record exact vehicle trims and their MPG or kWh/100 mi ratings.
  4. Enter current local gasoline, diesel and electricity prices, including time-of-use periods.
  5. Estimate the share of EV charging from home, work and public sources.
  6. Calculate each cost per mile with the formulas above.
  7. Multiply by the same annual miles and display annual energy cost side by side.
  8. Run low, typical and high price or efficiency cases.
  9. If buying a vehicle, create a second table for purchase and ownership costs.
  10. Record the date and assumptions so the comparison can be updated rather than rebuilt.

What the result can—and cannot—tell you

The output is a transparent estimate of commute energy spending under stated conditions. It can show whether a local rate or driving pattern makes one powertrain cheaper per mile, how much rapid charging changes an EV’s result, and how sensitive diesel’s advantage is to the diesel price.

It cannot guarantee your future bill. Prices move, routes change, temperatures affect efficiency and charging behavior determines the electricity mix. Present the result with its assumptions, not as a universal ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the same commute, same annual mileage and current local rates are used, the comparison becomes meaningful: gasoline and diesel are governed by price per gallon divided by MPG, while an EV is governed by kWh per mile multiplied by the electricity rate. Everything beyond that—purchase price, charger installation and the rest of ownership—belongs in a clearly labeled second analysis.
