Record cargo behind the third row with every regular passenger aboard, then check the mixed-use arrangement with part of the rear seating folded, and finally note what must be folded, removed, or sacrificed to reach maximum capacity.
That method answers practical questions such as “How much cargo space is behind the third row?” and “Which minivan seats fold or come out?” It also exposes differences in seat movement, child-seat access, loading openings, and the effort required to reconfigure the cabin.

Start with the three cargo states that matter
Every comparison should record at least three states. Keep the model year, trim, drivetrain, seat configuration, and measurement label attached to every number. A manufacturer’s “maximum” may describe a useful layout for one family and an unusable layout for another.
1. Behind the third row with all seats in service
This is the school-day, grocery-run, and many road-trip state: parents and children occupy all rows, while the rear compartment holds the stroller, backpacks, groceries, or a few suitcases. It is usually the most decision-useful number for a family that regularly carries six, seven, or eight people.

For a concrete example, a Toyota-published 2025 comparison lists 33.5 cubic feet behind the third row for a Sienna LE Hybrid FWD and 40.2 cubic feet for a Carnival MPV Hybrid LXS. Those figures are trim- and model-year-specific; they are not universal values for every Sienna or Carnival.
Honda’s 2026 Odyssey specifications separate “standard” and “maximum” capacity behind the third row: 32.8 cubic feet standard and 38.6 cubic feet maximum. Preserve that distinction rather than replacing the standard figure with the larger one.
2. Behind the second row with the third row stowed
This is the mixed-use state for a family carrying passengers in the first two rows while creating a longer cargo floor. Check whether the third row folds as one piece or in sections, whether either side can remain available for a passenger, and whether folding is a one-motion operation.

The word “maximum” matters: it may depend on seat position or trim-specific equipment. Photograph or record the exact configuration you used so a later comparison does not mix unlike measurements.
3. Maximum cargo with seats folded or removed
Maximum capacity is a useful ceiling, but it is not a passenger-carrying state. Write down which seats are folded, removed, or slid forward to obtain it, where those seats must be stored, and how many occupants remain.
For the 2026 Odyssey, Honda lists 140.7 cubic feet behind the first row as a standard figure and 155.8 or 155.7 cubic feet as the maximum, depending on trim. Honda’s feature guide also cites up to 155.7 cubic feet when the second-row seats are removed and the third-row Magic Seat is folded. That guide says 4-by-8-foot sheet stock can be accommodated in the specified configuration. Do not treat 155.7 or 155.8 as interchangeable, trim-independent numbers.

The Toyota-published 2025 comparison lists 101.0 cubic feet with the rear seats folded for the Sienna LE Hybrid FWD and 145.1 cubic feet for the Carnival MPV Hybrid LXS. These are manufacturer comparison figures, not a normalized independent test, and they describe a cargo-oriented state with fewer usable passenger seats.
A repeatable comparison procedure
- Define the normal passenger load. Write down the number of adults and children, which row each person uses, and whether an eight-passenger bench or second-row captain’s chairs are required. A van that seats eight on paper may not meet your preferred arrangement.
- Freeze the exact vehicle specification. Record model year, trim, drivetrain, second-row layout, and whether the source reports standard, maximum, or another measurement label. Do not combine a 2025 trim’s cargo figure with a 2026 feature description without saying so.
- Measure the all-rows state. With every regular passenger seat occupied, check the cargo floor length, width between wheel wells, height to the roof, and the opening dimensions. Place the stroller, cooler, school bags, or luggage you actually carry in the compartment.
- Test the mixed-use state. Fold or split the third row while leaving the required second-row passengers in place. Time or count the actions: release a strap, pull a lever, move a head restraint, or remove a seat. Note whether one side can fold independently.
- Document the maximum state. Identify every surrendered seat. If a second-row seat must come out, determine whether it can be stored inside the van, in a garage, or nowhere convenient. Record the number of passengers still accommodated.
- Inspect the opening and floor. A long item may fit in cubic feet but fail at the hatch opening. Check sill height, opening height, floor flatness, wheel-well intrusion, and whether folded seats leave a step or a well.
- Install your own child seats. Use the exact rear-facing and forward-facing seats your children use. Check tether and lower-anchor access, buckle reach, third-row entry, and whether an adjacent seat can still slide or fold. General passenger-volume figures cannot establish child-seat fit.
Passenger flexibility is a mechanical feature
Second-row seat design
Second-row flexibility determines whether a van can switch between people and cargo without a full teardown. A bench may provide an eighth seating position; captain’s chairs may improve separation and walk-through access. Sliding sections can let you trade legroom for cargo length, but a seat that slides is not necessarily removable.
Honda says the 2026 Odyssey’s second-row seats can be removed and that available Magic Slide seats create multiple passenger-and-cargo arrangements. Removal creates a large open floor, but it also creates a storage and reinstallation task.
An Edmunds comparison published through the Associated Press reports that the Sienna’s second-row captain’s chairs slide farther fore and aft but cannot be removed. That is a meaningful trade-off: you gain adjustment range while losing the option of completely clearing the second row.
The same comparison describes the Carnival’s eight-passenger 40/20/40 second row as three sliding pieces. That arrangement can preserve a middle position while allowing the outer sections to move, but verify the exact seating layout on the trim you are considering.

A split third row is more useful than a single bench when one child or adult must remain in back while the other side carries cargo. Honda describes the Odyssey’s 60/40 third-row Magic Seat as foldable and says the vehicle supports one-to-eight occupant arrangements. Ask whether the seat folds into the floor, against the seatback, or onto the cargo area; each method changes floor height and available length.

One-motion versus multi-step conversion
“Folds flat” does not describe the work involved. During a demonstration, count the operations from upright seating to the desired cargo state. Include moving head restraints, folding seatbacks, sliding cushions, removing covers, and finding release handles. A mechanism that is easy for one adult to operate may still be impractical when a child seat blocks access.

Different manufacturers can use different measurement procedures. The figures above should therefore guide questions and test-drive checks, not serve as a perfectly normalized ranking.
Why the hatch opening and floor shape can outweigh cubic feet
Cubic feet is a volume, not a doorway measurement. A van can post a large maximum while rejecting a tall stroller, a wide cooler, a wheelchair, or a long box because the hatch opening is narrower or lower than the interior space.

- Measure the item’s longest, widest, and tallest orientations.
- Measure the hatch opening at its narrowest point, not just the interior width.
- Check the distance from the loading sill to the floor and the height under the hatch.
- Look for wheel wells, seat hinges, latches, and steps that interrupt a flat load surface.
- Try the item in the exact seat arrangement you will use; do not infer fit from the maximum number.
Honda identifies an optional molded-vinyl trifold cargo mat and cargo bins sized to the Odyssey’s rear-seat well. Those accessories may protect or organize that vehicle’s cargo area, but they do not establish fitment for another van. Verify model-year compatibility before buying any vehicle-specific mat or bin.
Child seats change the practical answer
Families often lose usable flexibility when child seats occupy the second row. A seat may technically slide or fold, yet become inaccessible once a rear-facing base, tether strap, or high-back booster is installed.
Install every child seat in the positions you expect to use. Then check whether an adult can reach the third-row buckle, whether a child can enter without climbing over a seat, and whether the adjacent section can move without uninstalling anything. Repeat the check with the stroller or luggage loaded.

The Associated Press-hosted Edmunds comparison reports easier LATCH access in the Toyota than in the Kia. Treat that as the comparison’s observation, not a universal result for every trim or every child seat. Your own seats and the exact vehicle should decide.

Seats that fold into the floor
Integrated folding seats are convenient because there is no separate storage location. Inspect the resulting wells: they can lower the floor, collect dirt, or require a cover before fragile cargo is loaded.
Seats that must be removed
Removable seats create the greatest theoretical flexibility but impose the greatest handling burden. Check the seat’s weight, the release process, where it can be stored safely, and how often you would realistically reinstall it. A maximum-cargo number is less valuable if the conversion takes two adults and a clear garage.
Seats that only slide
Sliding captain’s chairs or bench sections can fine-tune legroom and cargo length while preserving seating. They do not provide the same open floor as removal. Check whether the travel range is enough for your longest item and whether the mechanism remains usable beside a child seat.
Build a family-specific scorecard
Use a simple worksheet rather than a single ranking. Give each van a row for the following measurements and observations:
- Cargo behind the third row with all regular passengers aboard.
- Cargo behind the second row with the third row stowed.
- Maximum cargo, including the seats surrendered to obtain it.
- Number of passengers remaining in each useful configuration.
- Time and number of actions to fold, slide, or remove seats.
- Whether one side of a split seat can remain available.
- Hatch opening width and height, sill height, and floor shape.
- Child-seat anchor access and third-row entry with your own seats installed.
- Storage requirements for removed seats and effort to reinstall them.
Weight the rows according to your calendar. A family that carries all children every school day should give more weight to behind-third-row capacity and buckle access. A family that transports bicycles or home-improvement materials may value a flat, long maximum-cargo floor, even if that state is used only occasionally.

Questions to ask during a test drive
- Which exact trim and drivetrain produced the published cargo number?
- Is the number standard, maximum, or measured with a particular seat position?
- Can the third row fold 60/40, and can either side remain occupied?
- Do second-row seats slide, fold, tumble, or come out entirely?
- Where are removed seats stored between trips?
- Can the hatch close with your stroller, cooler, or sports equipment loaded?
- Can you reach every buckle and tether anchor after installing your child seats?
- Does the floor remain level, and are there wells or steps under the load?
- Does the owner’s manual describe a different procedure from the salesperson’s demonstration?
Confirm the final procedure in the exact vehicle manual. Trim content, seat hardware, accessory fitment, and published specifications can change by model year, so recheck documentation before buying a new or used van.
How to interpret the Odyssey, Sienna, and Carnival examples
The 2026 Odyssey offers unusually explicit reporting across three seat states and combines a removable second row with a split-folding third row. That makes it a strong candidate for families whose priorities alternate between carrying people and opening a large cargo floor, provided they accept the work and storage involved in removing seats.
The 2025 Sienna figures show why a seats-up comparison can tell a different story from a maximum-cargo comparison. Its listed 33.5 cubic feet behind the third row is lower than the Carnival MPV Hybrid LXS’s 40.2 cubic feet in the Toyota comparison, while its 101.0 cubic feet with rear seats folded is also lower than the Carnival’s 145.1 cubic feet. The Edmunds comparison adds a different dimension: Sienna captain’s chairs slide farther but cannot be removed, and the comparison reports easier LATCH access in the Toyota.

The Carnival’s 40/20/40 second-row design, as described in that comparison, provides three sliding pieces and an eight-passenger arrangement. Whether that flexibility is more useful than removable seats depends on your actual child-seat positions, passenger count, and bulky-item dimensions.
The decision rule
Choose the van that performs best in your most frequent occupied configuration, then use mixed-use and maximum cargo states to check occasional needs. Treat published cubic-foot figures as labeled reference points, not proof that a particular stroller, wheelchair, cooler, or sheet of material will fit. The meaningful comparison is the combination of available volume, surviving passenger seats, physical access, and the effort required to change the layout.
