The best family SUV is the one that fits your actual passengers, child seats and luggage, has safety results for the exact model year and equipment you will buy, and remains affordable after fuel, electricity, tax, insurance, servicing, finance and depreciation. Compare those three areas with the same trim, test method and household assumptions; headline boot litres, five-star ratings and WLTP economy figures are not directly interchangeable.
Start with the family you actually need to carry
Before comparing vehicles, write a short requirements sheet. Record the number of adults and children, each child’s age and seat type, stroller or mobility equipment, normal luggage, parking or garage limits, towing needs, annual mileage, typical journey length, access to home charging and your purchase or lease budget.

Decide whether five seats are enough
Confirm whether every passenger can travel in the required configuration at the same time. A nominal five-seat layout does not show whether three child seats fit across the second row, whether a rear-facing seat leaves enough room for the front passenger, or whether children can reach and use their buckles. This guide does not compare third-row SUVs, so treat a need for six or seven usable seats as a separate requirement.

Take the seats you already own, or the specific seats you intend to buy, to a dealer or seller. UK government guidance explains approved child seats and ISOFIX anchor-point fitting, but it does not certify that a particular seat fits a particular SUV. Check compatibility for the exact vehicle, seat, child size and installation method.

- Open each rear door fully and check whether an adult can lift a child into position without twisting.
- Install every child seat simultaneously, including any high-back booster or rear-facing seat.
- Move the front seats to the positions the adults actually use, then check knee room and seat-back clearance.
- Verify that ISOFIX points, top-tether anchors and seat belts remain accessible after neighbouring seats are installed.
- Ask each regular passenger to sit in the vehicle; a theoretical seat count is not a comfort or access test.
Measure usable space instead of trusting one boot number
Boot capacity is meaningful only when the seating state and measurement method match. Record the figure with all required seats in use, then measure the folded-seat arrangement only if you will genuinely use it. Note whether the manufacturer measures to the window line or the roof and whether the figure uses the VDA method or another convention.
Three checks to perform at the vehicle
- Seats up: load the stroller, weekly shop, school bags and any other item that normally travels with all passengers aboard. Check the aperture height, floor length, width between wheel arches and ease of securing loose items.
- Seats folded: fold the seats exactly as the manual describes. Check whether the resulting floor is flat, whether headrests must be removed and whether a seat belt or cargo cover obstructs the opening.
- Daily access: test the tailgate in your garage or parking space, the loading lip, under-floor storage and the ability to reach items at the front of the boot without unloading everything.
One manufacturer example shows why the labels matter. Honda UK lists 617 litres with the CR-V Plug-in Hybrid’s rear seats up, 1,100 litres with seats down measured to the window, and 1,710 litres with seats down measured to the roof; the listed capacity uses the VDA method. These are variant-specific figures, not a universal cross-SUV result.

Check the shape, not just the volume
Two boots with the same quoted litres can behave very differently. Measure the narrowest point between wheel arches, the distance from the tailgate to the rear seatbacks and the height below the parcel shelf. Test whether a folded pushchair can be inserted without removing wheels, and whether a hard-sided case can stand upright. Look for tie-down points, a reversible floor and a low enough loading lip for heavier bags. If you routinely carry a dog, check where a guard can be fitted and whether it prevents the seats from folding.

Look up the exact vehicle, powertrain, body style, model year and trim in the Euro NCAP assessment database. Record the star rating, each area score, the equipment tested and whether an optional safety pack was required for the result you are considering.
Read all four Euro NCAP areas
- Adult Occupant: protection measured for adult occupants in the prescribed crash tests.
- Child Occupant: protection and restraint-related performance for child occupants.
- Vulnerable Road User: performance relating to pedestrians, cyclists and similar road users.
- Safety Assist: tested driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems.
Do not compare five-star results from different years as if they were on one scale. Euro NCAP states that its protocols become more demanding over time. Its Best-in-Class comparison is restricted to vehicles tested in the same year and uses standard equipment, so a same-year category result is a fairer reference than an old five-star badge against a new one.
A current-score example, used correctly
Euro NCAP’s 2025 datasheet for the tested smart #5 Pro records 88% Adult Occupant, 93% Child Occupant, 84% Vulnerable Road Users and 92% Safety Assist. Those percentages describe the test categories and conditions; they are not a probability of avoiding injury in every crash and they do not automatically apply to a different trim or model year.
Euro NCAP’s 2025 Best-in-Class selections included Tesla Model Y as Best Small SUV and smart #5 as Best Large SUV. This illustrates a same-year category comparison, not proof that either vehicle suits every family or that the two categories are directly equivalent.

Verify what is standard on your car
Open the equipment list for the exact grade and confirm that the tested assistance systems are fitted as standard. A rating achieved with an optional pack may not describe the lower-priced version you can afford. Check for the features your household actually uses, such as rear-seat reminders, lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and a reversing camera, but do not treat a longer equipment list as a substitute for the formal test result. Also note whether a software update or facelift created a new assessment entry.
Match powertrain to the family’s journeys
Compare the exact engine, battery, drivetrain and trim. A petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric SUV can have different boot space, weight, towing limits, tax treatment and standard equipment even within one model name.
Questions for a plug-in hybrid
- Can you charge at home or at a dependable workplace destination?
- How many miles are normally driven between charges?
- Will the vehicle be charged often enough for electric running to represent a meaningful share of trips?
- Does the battery reduce boot space or alter the seating configuration?
Honda UK’s CR-V Plug-in Hybrid Advance Tech 2WD specification lists a weighted combined fuel consumption of 0.8 l/100 km, electric consumption of 15.5 kWh/100 km and a 50-mile equivalent all-electric range. Those are manufacturer WLTP figures for that listed variant. They should not be treated as the expected result for a household that rarely charges or drives mostly beyond the electric range.
Match WLTP figures, not mixed headlines
The UK Vehicle Certification Agency describes WLTP as the official test procedure that replaced NEDC for new-car fuel and CO2 figures. Use the same WLTP measure—combined fuel consumption or electricity use—for every candidate. WLTP is a controlled comparison input, not a guarantee of real-world consumption. Keep fuel and electricity figures in separate columns rather than ranking a petrol figure directly against a plug-in hybrid’s weighted combined result.
Build realistic journey scenarios
Split your annual mileage into representative trips: short school runs, commuting, weekend travel and longer holidays. For each powertrain, note whether the engine is likely to warm up, whether charging is available at the destination and how much luggage and passenger weight is carried. A plug-in hybrid may perform very differently on an almost-electric local schedule than on motorway holidays with an empty battery. An electric SUV also needs a practical plan for home, workplace or public charging, including where the car can be left while it charges.
Build a household running-cost model
Fuel economy is only one line in the budget. Use one set of assumptions for every SUV and change only the vehicle-specific inputs. Keep one-off purchase costs separate from recurring annual costs.
Annual energy cost
For a combustion or hybrid vehicle, calculate annual litres as annual miles divided by 100, multiplied by the official litres-per-100-kilometre figure after converting miles to kilometres. Multiply litres by your expected pump price. For an electric vehicle, calculate annual kilowatt-hours from annual kilometres and the matched kWh/100 km figure, then multiply by your home, workplace or public charging rates. For a plug-in hybrid, model the electric and petrol portions separately under your actual charging pattern instead of relying only on the weighted test number.

Costs to include for every candidate

UK tax qualification
UK vehicle tax depends on vehicle type and registration date. GOV.UK guidance updated 2 April 2026 gives rates for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, including £10 in the first year and £200 at the standard rate for qualifying electric or zero-emission cars registered on or after 1 April 2025. An expensive-car supplement can apply when the list price exceeds £50,000. Check the exact vehicle and the tax year you will pay; these are UK rules and do not apply universally.

Separate cash flow from total cost
A lease payment, finance instalment or cash purchase answers a cash-flow question, while depreciation and interest describe the economic cost of keeping the vehicle. Show both. For a purchase comparison, estimate the vehicle’s value at the end of your planned ownership period, subtract it from the purchase price and add finance interest, tax, insurance, energy, maintenance and tyres. For a lease, include the deposit, every monthly payment, fees, mileage charges and any end-of-contract costs. Run a low-, medium- and high-mileage scenario so one optimistic assumption does not decide the result.
Use a repeatable comparison worksheet
Create one row per exact SUV version, not one row per model family. A useful worksheet has these columns:
- Model year, body style, powertrain, drivetrain and trim.
- Number of usable seats with your child-seat arrangement installed.
- Rear-door access, front-seat clearance and ISOFIX or top-tether usability.
- Boot capacity with seats up, plus the stated method and window or roof reference.
- Boot capacity with seats folded, with the same measurement qualifications.
- Euro NCAP test year, star rating, four area scores and standard versus optional safety equipment.
- WLTP combined fuel consumption or electricity use for that exact version.
- Charging time and access assumptions where relevant.
- Annual energy cost using your mileage and local prices.
- Tax, insurance, servicing, tyres, finance and depreciation assumptions.
Mark an item “not stated” when the manufacturer or test source does not publish a comparable value. Do not fill a gap with a number from another trim, market or measurement convention.
Keep an evidence trail
Save the specification page, price list, Euro NCAP assessment and tax calculation alongside the worksheet, with the date checked. Manufacturers can revise equipment, prices and capacity descriptions. If a dealer quotes a different figure, ask which model year, wheel size, seat position and measurement convention it uses. This makes later updates straightforward and prevents a remembered headline from replacing the number that applies to your car.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Comparing different trims
Safety equipment, wheel sizes, battery capacity and boot layouts can change by trim. Copy the full grade name and drivetrain into every note and verify that the test result covers that equipment.
Ranking litres without matching methods
A seats-down-to-roof figure is not equivalent to a seats-up-to-window figure. Put the seating state, VDA or other method, and measurement height beside every capacity number.

Treating all five-star ratings as equal
Check the assessment year first. A newer protocol may test more demanding scenarios or systems than an older one, so use same-year comparisons when drawing a relative conclusion.
Using a plug-in hybrid’s best-case economy
Weighted WLTP consumption assumes a defined test pattern. If your home cannot charge reliably, calculate the petrol share for the journeys you actually make and include public-charging prices where applicable.

Low energy use can be outweighed by insurance, tyres, servicing, finance, tax or depreciation. Price each item for your driver profile, postcode, ownership period and annual mileage.
Ignoring physical access
A boot may be large on paper yet difficult to load because of a high lip, narrow opening or tailgate clearance. Perform the loading test in the place where the vehicle will normally be parked.
Confusing maximum volume with safe volume
Loading to the roof can obscure rear vision and turn loose luggage into a hazard. Treat the roof figure as a capacity reference, not an instruction to stack items above the parcel shelf. Use the seats-up measurement for normal family travel and secure anything that could move in a stop.

Eliminate any SUV that fails a non-negotiable requirement, such as fitting all child seats, accommodating the normal luggage load or meeting parking dimensions. Among the survivors, compare safety evidence from the same test year, then calculate annual and whole-term costs using one set of household assumptions. If two vehicles remain close, choose the one whose space and charging routine you can demonstrate in person rather than the one with the most impressive isolated specification.
The evidence available for this method does not establish a universal best family SUV or a complete multi-model ranking. A defensible choice requires the exact local model year, trim, equipment, prices, tax rules and your own family-fit test.

How many child seats should I test in a family SUV?
Test the complete arrangement you will use, including every rear-facing seat, high-back booster and adult passenger. Install them at the same time, then check front-seat clearance, door access, ISOFIX or top-tether access and whether buckles can be reached. A vehicle’s advertised seat count does not guarantee that your particular seats fit.
Can I compare boot litres from different SUV manufacturers?
Only after matching the seating position and measurement convention. Record whether seats are up or folded, whether capacity is measured to the window or roof, and whether the VDA method is used. Honda’s CR-V example lists separate seats-up, seats-down-to-window and seats-down-to-roof figures, illustrating why one headline number can mislead.
Does a five-star Euro NCAP rating mean the same thing every year?
No. Euro NCAP says its protocols become more demanding over time. Compare vehicles tested in the same year where possible, and check the four area scores and whether the tested safety equipment was standard or optional on the trim you plan to buy.
How should I calculate a plug-in hybrid’s running cost?
Split your mileage into electric and petrol portions based on how often you can charge and the length of your trips. Apply local electricity and petrol prices separately, then add tax, insurance, servicing, tyres, finance and depreciation. Do not assume the weighted WLTP figure represents a household that rarely plugs in.
What UK tax should I budget for an electric SUV?
Check the vehicle type, registration date, list price and tax year. Should I use WLTP fuel economy as my expected real-world result?

What if a manufacturer does not publish a comparable boot or safety figure?
Mark the field as not stated and test the vehicle in person. Do not substitute a number from another trim, market, model year or measurement method. A transparent gap is safer than a precise-looking figure that does not describe the vehicle you are buying.

No. Compare the deposit, monthly payments, APR, fees, mileage allowance, end value and any excess charges, then calculate the total payable. Keep that cash-flow comparison separate from depreciation and other ownership costs.

Compare family SUVs in the configuration your household actually uses: fit every child seat and passenger, load the normal luggage, match boot measurement methods, and read Euro NCAP results by test year and equipment. Then calculate energy, tax, insurance, servicing, tyres, finance and depreciation with identical mileage and price assumptions.
